“You know I’m not usually one for drinks, but considering the circumstances, I’ll make an exception just for today,” Yuri said pouring himself and Byleth a glass of wine. “Even brought out the good stuff for you.”
“Thanks, but you really didn’t have to,” Byleth said, taking a sip and then eyeing the snack Yuri had requested the bartender make just for them.
“Hey not seeing you for five whole years and you coming back to Garegg Mach is a big deal indeed friend. You’ve been missed here in Abyss, and with you ridding those bandits up above perhaps things will finally start to improve down here.”
“Has it been hard?” Byleth asked, frowning as he placed his glad down.
“No harder than before honestly. The biggest issue has been gathering supplies but we’re making due. But come now, let’s chat about more pleasant things for right now. Let’s forget about the war and all that even if just for a bit, indulge a little.”
Byleth wasn’t sure just what kind of game Yuri was playing, but when Yuri raised his glass for a toast Byleth still joined in. Enjoying a few glasses of wine and idle chatter as the night wore on. It was nice, with the whirlwind life had been since Byleth’s return this moment to just take break felt needed and refreshing.
“You know,” Yuri said when they were about halfway through the bottle. “Balthus apparently told me about a particular game they played in the Alliance I thought might be fun. Would you like to give it a try?”
“Sure?” Byleth said, wondering if it had anything to do with the chocolate-covered treats that had been sitting there the entire time.
“The game is simple, two people try and use their mouths to get the bigger size of this here pocky stick. You lose if you release it or get the smaller size, sound fun?” Byleth nodded, wondering just why Yuri would want to play such a particular game with him.
“Good, now then,” he placed the pocky stick between his lips. “Your turn, friend.”
Byleth easily latched on as well, moving forward without much care of just what could happen if the two got too close. Perhaps it was the drink, perhaps that he trusted Yuri to not be up to anything, but still, the only thing that caused Byleth to change his neutral expression was when his and Yuri’s lips met. Yuri closed his eyes to savor the moment, and Byleth’s going wide as his somewhat tipsy brain finally began to put two and two together.
When they broke apart Byleth nodded, picking up another stick to begin the game again. “You know if you wanted to kiss me you could have just asked, Yuri.” He then placed the pocky stick between his lips. “But I’m willing to continue playing along.”
