Work Text:
It is whispered in shadows and arcane tongues, in realms far removed from the mundane, that a mysterious and elusive 89th constellation exists. Unseen by ordinary eyes, it takes the form of a spider’s web, its shimmering lines haunting the void of night. Yet even more enigmatic than its shape is the myth entwined with its creation—a tale born in the unfathomable eons before time, Earth, or humanity itself.
In that primordial darkness, before existence as we know it began, there were only the stars and the Thrauntoola. These spider-like beings, grotesque and alien beyond human comprehension, simply were—timeless, originless, and incomprehensible. Of their number, there were but three: the Elder, the Middle, and the Youngest, siblings only in the loosest sense. While the Middle and Youngest were nearly identical save for size, the Elder stood apart in every way, its power unmatched and its intellect vast.
The Elder Spider possessed a singular gift: the ability to peer into the yet-unformed future, glimpsing the birth of a universe. Among its visions was a great explosion that would shatter the infinite blackness, bringing forth stars, life, and a blue-green planet—Earth. In its pride, the Elder Spider claimed this future world as its rightful domain. But its ambition was obstructed by its weaker, insignificant siblings, who, it believed, had no place in the kingdom it envisioned.
When the Middle and Youngest slipped into slumber, the Elder Spider remained awake. It moved silently, weaving a web of unimaginable strength around them, binding them in its sticky, unyielding strands. The siblings stirred too late, their confusion turning to terror as the Elder opened its gaping maw, filled with countless jagged teeth, and devoured them whole. They had no time to struggle, no chance to resist. Their existence was snuffed out in a single, terrible act of cannibalism.
In that moment, the explosion the Elder had foreseen erupted. The cosmos lit up as stars ignited and planets coalesced. Earth, the object of the Elder’s desire, began to form. Yet, as it gazed upon this newborn world, the Elder Spider’s triumph was short-lived. Around it, other entities began to appear—colossal, alien beings adorned with writhing tentacles, creatures of immense power that would come to be known as the Outer Gods.
The Elder Spider observed them in silence, its mind reeling. It had not foreseen their presence; its visions had betrayed it. These beings, as numerous as they were formidable, moved toward Earth, claiming it as their own. Though tempted to attack, the Elder Spider hesitated. For all its power and cunning, it could not be certain of victory against such overwhelming odds. Reluctantly, it withdrew into the farthest reaches of the cosmos, seething with frustration but vowing to reclaim what it saw as rightfully its.
Before retreating, the Elder Spider wove a final web—one formed of starlight, stretching across the void where it had consumed its siblings. This celestial web, invisible to most, would stand as a mark of its existence, a defiant reminder to the Outer Gods that it came first and that it had not forgotten.
Even now, only a select few claim to see this 89th constellation, a daemonic spider’s web gleaming faintly in the heavens at certain times of the year. To those who know the myth, it is an omen—a promise of the Elder Spider’s eventual return, when it will exact its vengeance and stake its claim upon the Earth.
