Work Text:

Oikawa and Iwaizumi have been best friends all of their lives. They got along well, sometimes fought, but never left each other's side. Somewhere along the line, their love for each other grew from platonic to romantic and in their 2nd year of highschool, they confessed. Oikawa and Iwaizumi have been dating for a year now and are in their 3rd year of highschool. Their relationship didn’t change much, well besides the dates. It wasn’t really a secret that they were together but they never went out of their way to make it known. Today is a day that Iwaizumi wished they had. Oikawa Tooru is an amazing setter and captain for Seijoh’s volleyball team. He’s charming, attractive, smart, and confident so naturally he has a lot of fan girls. Like a lot. Iwaizumi has always been able to deal with the gifts, the flirting, how they touch his arms, and how they throw themselves at his boyfriend, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t absolutely hate it. Today is February 14, Valentine’s Day, also known as the day Iwaizumi hates how perfect his boyfriend is.

Oikawa and Iwaizumi are walking to school together, hand in hand. Oikawa is talking happily about anything and everything, while Iwaizumi is quietly walking and mumbling a response every once in a while. Before they turned the corner and onto the street the school is on, Iwaizumi pulled gently on Oikawa’s hand to get him to stop.

“Hey Iwa-chan, is everything okay?” Oikawa turned in front so he could face him.

“Look, once we get in there,” Iwaizumi gestured to the school’s direction, “you’re going to be swarmed by girls so I just wanted to say Happy Valentine’s Day Oikawa Tooru.” He took a small item out of his pocket and placed it on Oikawa’s palm.

“Wha- Iwa-chan… I- Thank you. Happy Valentine’s Day.” Oikawa stuttered, shocked. He looked down at his hand and picked up the gift. It was a small, gold chain necklace with a little ruby heart on it. Oikawa gave Iwaizumi a small, found smile and asked him to put it on him. He turned around and felt the cold metal being gently placed around his neck. Once it was clipped into place, Iwaizumi wrapped his arms around Oikawa’s waist and held him close as Oikawa stared at the little red heart.

“Oh, I love it,” Oikawa whispered softly with the tiniest curl of his lips. He turned his head to the side to meet his boyfriend, who was resting his head on his shoulder, with a quick yet gentle kiss.

“Come on, you have chocolates to go get,” Iwaizumi says playfully, pushing Oikawa forward.

As they walk into the school gates, girls immediately start calling out and swarming Oikawa to give him chocolates, gifts, and love confessions. Iwaizumi ignores them and gives Oikawa’s hand a light squeeze before walking off and going to his locker. This is a pretty normal routine for the two just with less girls. Iwaizumi’s locker is still close to the mob surrounding Oikawa so he gets the great pleasure of hearing all the girls fawning over his boyfriend. They are all competing over who would be the best girlfriend. Iwaizumi isn’t the type of person who gets jealous easily, or so he likes to think, but hearing all of them saying that they would give him the best gifts or understand his commitment to volleyball makes his blood boil. They don’t understand who Oikawa really is. They don’t see Oikawa when he is crying over a cheesy romance movie or staying up until 3am talking about why aliens do exist and what they are like. They don’t know him like he does and they definitely cannot support him like he does. Iwaizumi gets too lost in his thoughts that once he comes out of his head, he realizes that the hallway is dead silent. He looks over to see what’s going on and spots everyone just staring at Oikawa. More specifically, the girl with pitch black hair standing in front of him with her hands on either side of his shoulders. Oikawa looks up and his wide panicked eyes meet Iwaizumi. Not knowing what is going on but knowing his childhood best friend well enough to see that he wants out of the current situation, he makes up a lie and calls out to him over the sea of gaping girls.

“Oi Trashykawa, stop talking to your fans or whatever and get to the gym. You're the captain, you should really pay attention to when we have meetings.” He walks past everyone and grabs Oikawa by his wrist. As they are walking away, Iwaizumi can hear the whispers of people around him talking about the girl that was in front of his boyfriend.

“I can’t believe she kissed him”, “I wish that was me”, “Ugh, she’s so lucky to have kissed The Oikawa Toru.”

Confused, Iwaizumi looks over his shoulder to the man in question and sees him with his head down and the back of his hand pressed to his mouth. Iwaizumi might have been jealous before, but right now, he was down right furious. Anger taking over, he starts walking faster to a closer but still secluded area, the club room. He dragged Oikawa there, still gripping his wrist tightly and Oikawa never made a move to stop or slow him down. He was too lost in thought to even really register what was happening. He wanted to scream. When that girl kissed him, he was too shocked to do anything. Now, he just feels sick. He is in a relationship with Iwaizumi, a year long relationship, and didn’t stop someone else from kissing him. His mind was racing thinking about what Iwaizumi would say, what he would do.

"Stop overthinking, we’re almost there.” Oikawa’s head shot up when he heard Iwaizumi speak, well it was more of a low growl.

“Okay,” he whispered barely audible but he knew that Iwaizumi heard him, he always heard him even if he wasn’t speaking out loud.

Once they got to the clubroom, Iwaizumi closed and locked the door. He was facing away from Oikawa, trying to breathe calmly. He didn’t want to yell or get mad, it wasn’t really Oikawa’s fault. Well maybe it was, he didn’t actually see what happened. Slowly, he turned to face his boyfriend. Oikawa was staring at his shoes, playing with his hands. Iwaizumi was frozen. He didn’t know what to say, how to confront him. All he knows is that he wants to scream. He wants to scream and yell and shout until his throat is raw and he can't think. Carefully he begins to speak,

“I want you to tell me everything that happened.” Oikawa looked up to meet his eyes but Iwaizumi quickly turned away. This was all so confusing, so tiring. He didn’t have the strength or energy to hold Oikawa’s sharp gaze. He folded his arms against his chest as a nervous habit. He was mad, really mad and he had the right to be. The room filled with silence again, only the AC making a low humming sound that pounded like drums in their ears was there to fill it. They both wish it wasn’t. Oikawa swallowed hard, looking down at the floor again.

“Okay,” he began taking a deep breath, “ I was being handed gifts and chocolates when this one girl, that girl, came up to me. She handed me a volleyball keychain I think, I don’t really remember. When I went to say thank you, she pulled me down by my shoulders and she kissed me. I was shocked and I didn’t fully realize what happened until after.”

Oikawa looked up once he finished, stealing a glance at Iwaizumi. He had noticeably tensed up and was glaring at the club room lockers like they had been the one to kiss his boyfriend. Oikawa inhaled sharply, straightened up, and looked directly at Iwaizumi, “Look Iwa-chan, I’m sorry. I’m so unbelievably sorry. I should have pushed her off. I know I should have. I just didn’t know what was going on. The first thing I did was look for you. I don’t even know who she is. Please, just please don’t hate me. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” He finished off in a whisper. He was looking down at the floor again. He had subconsciously started to play with the new necklace that was still around his neck. He looked up to watch as Iwaizumi closed his eyes. When he opened them, he was looking at Oikawa. His eyes were glazed over, they looked as if he wasn’t really there but still somewhere in his mind. It broke Oikawa’s heart a little knowing that he made him put up those same walls that he somehow climbed over. Iwaizumi finally spoke, his voice sounding rougher from how long he has been quiet.

“I know. I know that it isn’t your fault. I saw the look in your eyes when you looked up, I know that you didn’t want that to happen. But can you blame me for being upset? We have been dating for a year, Oikawa, a year, and this random girl all of a sudden just kisses you. I’m not mad at you, I’m just so frustrated. I’m not good at this. I'm not good at the emotions and vulnerability in a relationship and I'm trying to be good, I'm trying to be open. This, this situation, this event, it just completely drained me and I'm tired.” Iwaizumi rubbed at his face and turned to the door.

“Iwa- wait-” Oikawa tried to reach out for him, to talk to him but was cut off.

“I’m still gonna walk you home after school. We don't have practice so don't go to the gym and overwork yourself. We can talk more at your house.” He turned his head to look over his shoulder and gave Oikawa a small, tired smile. “I promise,” Iwaizumi whispered and then turned back, opened the door, and walked out leaving the quiet click of the door closing behind him. Oikawa just stood there in the middle of the club room, alone.

For the rest of the school day, Oikawa respected Iwaizumi’s wish and didn’t attempt to talk to him. The day crawled by far too slowly. He was itching to get home. He knows that Iwaizumi isn’t mad at him but he still feels his heart break when he thinks over their conversation. He’ll feel much better when they are in the comfort of his home. His parents are on a trip for work so Iwaizumi is spending the night like they have always done since they were kids. Finally, the last bell of the day rings. Oikawa gathers his things as quickly as he can and walks out fast, trying to seem like he is about to burst if he doesn’t get out. He gets to the school gate and waits for Iwaizumi to come walking out. He keeps looking around, trying to spot his buff boyfriend over the field of students. He starts to play with his necklace, moving the ruby heart side to side on the chain. He finally sees Iwaizumi walking slowly out of the building with his head down. Oikawa stops all nervous movements and is about to walk towards him when a weight on his arm, just above his elbow, stops him. He turns around and sees pitch black hair.

“Hi Oikawa-san! Can I talk to you?” The girl, who he still doesn't know the name of, asks with a bright and innocent smile. He tries to not think about how uncomfortable he was when she kissed him or now with her hand still on his arm.

“Oh, hi!” he replies with the same fake smile he has perfected years ago. He turns to face her completely, causing her grip on his arm to fall. Relieved, he continues,

“Actually, I need to walk home with Iwa-chan so no, I can’t talk.” Her smile falls and she looks over his shoulder. When she started smiling again it was different. This smile was tighter, forced.

“Ah, Iwaizumi-san. Nice to see you.” Iwaizumi nodded slightly as a reply. “Well I’ll let you two go. See you tomorrow Oikawa-san!” She said as she skipped off. Oikawa turned to face Iwaizumi, but felt his shoulder quickly being pushed back as he walked past.

“Come on, let’s go,” Iwaizumi said, continuing on his path to Oikawa’s house. Oikawa quickly catched up to him, meeting his pace.

The walk to his house was quiet, silent between the two. It was filled with tension and the only thing occupying Oikawa was his mind. He slowly grew more and more worried with each step. He knows that the worst thing that could happen is Iwaizumi would break up with him, but he would honestly rather take getting hit by a bus than lose Iwaizumi. His thoughts were disrupted by something brushing against his hand. Looking down, he watched as Iwaizumi slowly laced their fingers together. He looked back up and smiled gently to himself. He watched as other students walked along the other side of the street and cars passed by. His worries melted away the second his and Iwaizumi’s hands met and the only thought that held his mind captive now was that everything would be okay. They would be okay. Iwaizumi’s actions always did speak louder than his words. The two boys walked into Oikawa’s house . Without saying a word, they took off their shoes, walked to Oikawa’s room, and sat next to each other on his bed. Iwaizumi was the first to speak.

“Thank you for giving me time and space.” Oikawa just nodded his head while looking down. He was still nervous. He kept playing with the heart pendant on his necklace, just to keep his hands busy. Iwaizumi sighed and turned to face Oikawa, “I’m sorry I made you worry. I would never leave you.” He slowly pulled one of Oikawa’s hands off of the necklace and gently held it. Oikawa finally looked up and met his eyes. He was worried that Iwaizumi’s eyes would still be closed off but what saw was the opposite. What he saw was adoration and love swirling in Iwaizumi’s eyes as he stared back at him. Everything finally started to catch up. They were in his room, not the club room. Iwaizumi wasn’t closed off, he didn’t hate him. He is the one that held his hand on the walk home. He is the one who started talking first. He would never leave him. Oikawa smiled at Iwaizumi, a small grateful smile. “So we’re okay?” He breathed out. “We’re okay”, Iwaizumi repeated more confidently. Oikawa’s smile only grew bigger with the reassurance.

“You're still my Iwa-chan?” Iwaizumi reached up and gently cupped Oikawa’s check. He dragged his thumb slowly over his cheekbone and leaned in, placing their lips together. It was a gentle, soft kiss, a brush of lips that conveyed every unsaid feeling. When they pulled apart, they pushed their foreheads together, smiling widely.

“Always and forever. I have and always will be your Iwa-chan. I promise.” They sat there for a few minutes longer, everything from today fading into background noise as Iwaizumi’s words floated in the air.

Once the couple finally did get up, they went into the kitchen to get sacks for a movie night. Oikawa wanted to watch this new alien movie that came out recently and Iwaizumi agreed quickly. However, Oikawa wasn’t as lucky for his next request. After begging on his knees for a solid 3 minutes, Iwaizumi gave in and went to go make him milk bread. Back on Oikawa’s bed, they sat with their backs resting against the wall and a big, fluffy gray blanket covering them just above their waists. Snacks and Oikawa’s milk bread surrounded them as they started the movie. Oikawa has always loved to talk, especially when he can talk about aliens. He would always talk over every sci-fi movie they watched that featured the creatures. When Iwaizumi was little, it would bother him and he would always have to tell Oikawa to be quiet. He gave up doing that a long time ago. Iwaizumi grew to love how excited and passionate Oikawa would get when talking about them. He wouldn’t really pay attention to the movies anymore and, instead, would listen to Oikawa talk on and on about the little details or get mad when something was wrong. He thinks it’s cute. As the movie neared the end, Oikawa yawned and rested his head against Iwaizumi’s shoulder, smiling slightly. Iwaizumi placed a soft kiss on his head and lowered his voice so as to not startle his boyfriend.

“Tired?” Oikawa just gave a small ham in response. Iwaizumi wrapped his arms around his waist and shifted so that he was lying on his back with Oikawa resting comfortably on his chest, their legs intertwined with each other. Oikawa nuzzled closer into Iwaizumi’s neck as he fell into a deep, peaceful sleep. Iwaizumi followed soon after.

Getting ready for school the next morning seemed to go by quickly. They moved together as they made a quick, yet healthy, breakfast and then got dressed. As they left the house, Iwaizumi immediately took Oikawa’s hand and they began walking down the street. Oikawa walked with a bounce in his step as he re-told everything that happened in last night’s alien movie. Iwaizumi laughed at him and called him a nerd, earning him an offended gasp and a slap to his shoulder, but otherwise listened quietly. It was a peaceful and short trip. The couple walked into the school and was greeted by a crowd of students standing a few steps away from a girl with pitch blcak hair. Recognizing her as the one who kissed Oikawa and suddenly feeling very possessive, Iwaizumi pulle on Oikawa’s hand to get him to face him and gave him a quick, soft kiss before walking towards his loker. Oikawa was shocked at first because Iwaizumi isn’t the type of person who is very fond of PDA but he understood once he looked over the crowd. He sees some people bouncing with joy, some looking like they want to c, and some looking highly amused, manly Makki and Matsun. Oikawa smiled nice and innocently at the girl with pitch black hair. She looked furious. He waved politely to everyone, not sparring her a second glance and went skipping off to his locker beside Iwaizumi. They grabbed what they needed while the crowd continued to stare. They heard as the girl stomped away and out of the hall. Iwaizumi couldn’t help the proud smile that pulled at his lips. The couple began a teasing conversation about a serve that Oikawa messed up during a recent practice game. Oikawa laced their fingers together as they walked off to volleyball practice, content with being known to the entire school as each other's boyfriend.
