Work Text:

Corazon lives in this fic; but it’s still angsty lol

Also- I haven’t written a lot of comforting parent - child fanfics cause like….I just don’t know how it works lol, I never had it 😂

Law couldn’t remember the first time he tried to kill himself. It was all too hazy to remember; which Law honestly felt pathetic for. If it was such a life changing event, how come he couldn’t even remember it; he’s remembered so much other stuff in his life, but why not that.

Law had a vague memory of holding a razor. It was painful, and scary, but it wasn’t nearly deep enough to do any significant damage but it was the memory that stuck. Corazon never found out about that moment, nor any of the others, which was one thing Law could be proud of.

“Law?”

Law was snapped back into reality when he heard his name be called. He quickly put the razors back into the bathroom sink and turned around to the locked door.

“Yea Cora-san?”

“Dinner!”

“Okay, coming in a second!” Law shouted back and quickly pulled down his sleeve, hiding numerous of his scars and cuts, covered by bandages.

Law got ready, turning around and unlocking the door, ready to step out and go to eat the meal Corazon had made, but he suddenly heard a loud crash. Law quickly rushed out of the bathroom and towards the noise, a sense of relief when he saw it was only Corazon on the floor, most likely having slipped.

Law walked forward and sighed, extending a hand out to help Corazon up, and smiling when he saw him stand and wipe non-existent dust off his shoulder.

“Thank you Law.”

Law simply nodded and walked to the kitchen, where a bowl of food sat for him. He grabbed the food and sat with Cora-san, enjoying the moment of peace they had. It was quiet and Law couldn’t help but let his mind wonder.

Law saw old scars on Corazon and felt a pang of guilt strike him. It was so unlike him, but when it came to family he was weak. It was, after all, his fault that Corazon had so many scars. If only they hadn’t met, or if he’d been stronger, smarter, he could’ve saved Cora-san from so many things…maybe if he were dead Corazon wouldn’t have had to suffer…wouldn’t have to suffer anymore. Hiding and constantly looking after him.

Law felt guilty. Like it was somehow all his fault for all the suffering Corazon had gone through. He remembered when his own brother, Doflamingo, shot him while he was protecting Law. Law would be lying if he said he wasn’t terrified. Terrified he’d lose his family again , but by a miracle Corazon had pulled through and had managed to survive. Law refused to leave him. He came back, crying, covered in tears and snow, face red from the cold and tears; but he didn’t care. When he knelt down next to Corazon he cried and he swore when Corazon opened his eyes he cried harder, leaping forward and hugging him.

“Law? Are you okay? You’ve been staring into the distance for a while?”

“Ah-” Law stuttered for a second, extremely uncharacteristic of him, “y-yea. Just daydreaming.”

Corazon looked at Law with a sceptical glare, not believing a word law said, but dropped the topic. He believed Law would come to him when the time was right.

“I’m going to bed.” Law said as he abruptly got up and walked to his room. Corazon only stared as Law walked down the hall. Corazon couldn’t help a worried feeling fill his stomach. He waited a few moments before finally deciding to go to bed himself after clearing the dishes; he could discuss it with Law tomorrow if it was still the same.

It was later that night and Law still couldn’t sleep. He was kept up with guilt. He knew how hard COrazon life was and how foolish he was to save him. He didn’t deserve it! He didn’t deserve anything! He was just a fucking selfish brat!

Law couldn’t stop the tears, making him feel more pathetic than ever. It was humiliating to think about. He couldn’t even be strong and smile when Corazon had done so much for him! How much more ungrateful could he get! He was so selfish…

“Tonight…I’ll do it tonight…” LAw whispered out to himself, shamefully.

He stood up and walked to his desk, where a few medical books were lying open, some notes taped to the books and pens scattered around the desk. Law sighed, taking and seat and grabbing a random pen and paper. He had enough, so it wouldn’t matter.

Law hesitantly began writing his letter.

To Cora-san,

Thank you so much for everything you’ve ever done for me. For protecting me, taking me under your wing…saving me…IT’s a shame it was pointless. I’m so sorry I wasn’t strong enough or smart enough. I’ve caused you so much pain and I can’t live with the fact knowing how much I hurt the people I love…

I’m sorry Cora-san…please forgive me…

Law

It was short and simple, really only with the bare minimum details, but it was enough. Law re-read it, deeming it good enough and sighing deeply as he stood up. He wiped the remaining tears from his face and walked to his door, slowly and quietly turning the doorknob, hoping not to wake Cora-san.

He walked as quietly as he could to Corazon’s door and slowly slid the note under his door, hoping he was already asleep. He hurried away to the bathroom as quietly as he could. He shut the door silently behind him and took a deep breath to steady himself.

Flicking on the light he glanced around, deciding he’d use the razors he put away before. He slowly and quietly opened the cabinet, reaching behind a few bottles and grabbing the small box. He manoeuvred it out and placed it on the side of the sink, making sure it was balanced and wouldn’t fall. He turned around, making sure the door was shut up and calmed his breathing.

Even though it was for the best, or so he thought, simply the thought of it was daunting. But he pushed it aside and opened the box, pulled a sleeve up and took out a razor. Unwrapping it he was careful not to cut his fingers, which he thought was funny, seeming his next move would be to do exactly that. He saw the blade gleam in the light and before he changed his mind, he brought the blade down.

It didn’t sting at first, not as the blood came dribbling out. Law knew it was nowhere near deep enough. He repeated the motion, multiple times, until his arm was stained red with his own blood. He felt dizzy and for some reason tears wouldn’t stop flowing down his face. Law felt a sudden sense of light-headedness and grabbed the sink to steady himself; but that was his mistake.

His hand bumped the edge of the box and knocked it off the sink. It crashed onto the floor with a loud sound, the razors scattering across the floor, making Law freeze. Corazon was sure to wake up from that noise, he was after all a marine. He was awoken by even the slightest sound; Law remembered this from when he was younger.

Law froze, unsure what to do, unsure if there even was anything he could do other than hope. Hope that Corazon won’t wake up and catch him, but that was quickly proven wrong when he heard rushed footsteps.

‘shit , shit, shit.’

Law mentally cursed himself.

Corazon walked through the small house and saw the light in the bathroom on, “Law?” He whispered through the door.

“Y-yea?” Law stuttered like an idiot. It was a clear sign something was wrong.

“You okay? I heard a loud noise.”

“Yea, I-I’m fine- Don’t worry.”

Corazon furrowed his brows. Law spoke with such uncertainty, definitely not like his usual self.

“What are you doing?”

“Ah-” That was his final mistake he made. Instead of giving an answer, he simply made a noise, and Corazon had enough.

“Law. I’m coming in. I’m worried.”

“N-No! Don’t!”

But it was too late, Corazon swung the door open and his eyes widened as he saw the bloody mess Law was in. HIs eyes were filled with fear and shame; but Corazon didn’t care.

“Holy shit Law!” Corazon rushed forward, ignoring Law’s protests and having a stern face on as he inspected the wound.

“Stay right here. Don’t move.” Law couldn’t do anything but nod. He’d been caught, no point in fighting.

Corazon rushed out of the room, crashing into a few things, letting out quiet curses but finally came back; somehow still in one piece.

“Let me have a look. I have the medical stuff,” Corazon huffed out as he knelt down in front of Law. Law was too ashamed to speak and Corazon was too focused on cleaning up the wound. He cleaned the blood off, letting out a sigh of slight relief as he saw the wound wasn’t as deep as he expected. He knew it wasn’t deep enough to do anything substantial damage to Law, it wasn’t deep enough, but it was still alarming.

As he used a cloth with disinfectant to clean away the blood and the wound, Law let out small hisses of pain, but Corazon continued, shocked with finding more and more old scars along with the newer ones.

He ignored them for now though, focusing on the larger cuts. He finally put the bloodied cloth in the sink and turned back to grab some bandages.

He gently wrapped it around Law's arm.

“Oh dear…”

Corazon shakily whispered out as he gently patted Law’s arm, signally he was finished. Law remained silent and refused to make eye contact with him, but he didn’t have much of any choice when Corazon wrapped his arms around Law and pulled him into a tight hug.

“Law, I’m so sorry…”

Law was shocked. Cora-san wasn’t meant to be the one apologising, he was.

“I’m so sorry you feel the need to do this…that I didn’t notice sooner…”

“No…you’re not meant to be apologising…”Law whispered out, unsure of Cora-san’s reaction.

“Yes I am. I was meant to be there for you, help you but I let this happen…”

There was a moment of silence and Law felt a wet patch grow on his shoulder. Corazon was crying…It broke the dam and Law couldn’t stop his own tears. He leant forward and tightly gripped Corazon’s sweater, as if he were to let go Cora-san would disappear again.

“I’m sorry…” Law muttered out and kept repeating himself while Corazon simply held him close and rubbed circles on his back.

“Law,” Corazon lent back and saw Law’s tear stained red face, “Please…please tell me what brought this on…”

“I-” The words seemed to die on his tongue.

Corazon didn’t interrupt, instead giving Law the space he needed.

“Law, I’m so sorry I didn’t notice sooner…”

“It’s okay…”

“No. No it’s not.” Corazon said but didn’t further the topic anymore.

“I felt bad…”

“Huh?-” Corazon let out a surprised noise before it clicked in his brain, “Whatever for?...”

“I…you keep getting hurt because of me….All your scars a-and you nearly died and...I’m sorry…I’m just the cause of your problems! If I didn’t exist you wouldn’t have to go through all of this!”

“Oh Law…Please don’t ever think that again! I don’t have a single regret taking you under my wing, protecting you….I don’t mind…I was ready to give up my life for you in a heartbeat and I’d do it a millions times. I never want you to feel bad about that…You’re not the one that inflicted me with all these scars and injuries and I don’t have a single regret.”

Law sniffled, feeling more tears threatening to fall, “really?...”

“I’d never lie to you…”

Law cried again and Corazon simply pulled him into a tight hug, “It’s okay now….it’s okay…”
