"What are you doing here? I thought you had your big, super, secret surgery today?" Maggie told her sister.
"I did. And, then I didn't. So, I thought I would find you and tell you about my new crush," Amelia happily answered. Weirdly, Maggie wasn't as excited as she usually would be.
"But somehow the vibe does not feel right, I…I'm gonna find you later."
Maggie nodded and started walking away.
Amelia chuckled to herself as she turned around, heading toward the closest elevator. After Meredith and her found out David needed an unexpected and important surgery, she had noticed how Kai felt absolutely stressed and scared. She knew David meant a lot to them.
This is why she had decided to go find them and try to comfort them while Hamilton was in surgery. After walking through a couple of long hallways, she turned right, and suddenly bumped into someone.
"Oh gosh! I'm sorry-" she started.
"Dr Shepherd!" the tall, green-eyed, neuroscientist exclaimed.
Amelia looked up, and met Kai's eyes. She started to open her mouth to reply and apologize again but nothing came out. The two doctors were still standing very close to each other, way too close for two colleagues. But Amelia didn't take a step back, instead she kept staring at them. "They are incredibly attractive. "
"Bartley! Hi, Uhm, I was actually on my way to find you." she finally managed to say. Her cheeks immediately turning to a light shade of red. Kai's grinned in response, looking down to the empty cup of coffee in their hand.
"I needed more coffee and, well, I got lost," they chuckled, "This place is huge."
Amelia laughed at that, and gestured for them to follow her. She bit her lip as she asked herself if the temperature in the hospital had suddenly increased or if it was just that effect Kai had on her. Both of them smiling, enjoying the comfortable silence while they were walking. When they finally reached the elevator to get to the cafeteria, Kai pressed the button.
"So, you were looking for me?" they asked Amelia, waiting.
"Wh- What?" the neurosurgeon stuttered. If she wasn't blushing before, she sure was now.
"You said you were on your way to find me, did something happen?" Kai said as the doors opened and both of them entered.
"Oh right. Nope, nothing's happened, I just wanted to check up on you, you seem to care a lot about David," she smiled at them.
Kai watched the doors close and sighed.
"David's stubborn but he's always been there for me, you know?" Amelia simply nodded, waiting for them to continue. "And I hate that he preferred denying his pain over telling you or Grey, I'm so infuriated-" Amelia slowly moved closer to Kai.
"Complications happen. More often than you'd think, and I know they're frustrating, but it'll be okay,. " Amelia said, giving them a soft smile.
The neuroscientist nodded and smiled back at her. Green eyes met blue ones and there they were, staring at each other, again. Completely lost in each other's beauty, it took a while for them to stop. Amelia cleared her throat as the 'ding' of the elevator resonated, getting ready to step out. But something was wrong, the doors weren't opening.
"Didn't we reach the first floor?" Amelia asked while Kai looked at the several buttons.
"Well, these definitely show that we're on the first floor."
Amelia slightly hit the doors, trying to open them, then a little harder, but failed.
"Great, looks like we're stuck here," she said, letting a nervous laugh out. She stepped back and leaned over the wall, looking at Kai who was standing in the same position on the other wall.
She noticed them scanning her from head to toe, biting their lower lip. And she wasn't close to denying that she was enjoying this. She felt that feeling in her stomach, and then once again: pants feelings.
"Don't do that."
"Do what?" they playfully answered.
"This. Checking me out like that, especially when we're stuck in this stupidly narrow elevator, that makes it even more difficult for me to act normally."
"Oh yeah, that," Kai replied, a big smirk on their face as they watched the older doctor's face turned red.
Amelia chuckled before stepping closer to them, her eyes flicking between their eyes and their lips. She didn't even care that she was stuck in the elevator anymore, all she thought about was how lucky she was to be this close to Kai. Hoping Kai felt the same, she tilted her head up, bringing Kai's face close to hers and then her lips were finally on theirs.
Kai slowly put both of their hands on Amelia's waist, holding her close. They didn't want to let her go: it seemed too good to be true, they thought. The kiss started slowly, exploring the new feeling, Amelia's hands playing with Kai's hair, and Kai's landing on the top of her ass.
As they continued kissing, the heat increased as Amelia started breathing heavily.
"Fuck," she moaned in their mouth, not wanting to break the kiss.
Kai was the one to break the kiss, and smirked. On the other hand, Amelia stood there, waiting for them to say something, or do something..
"Took you long enough," they said, a big grin on their face.
Both of them took a step back as they heard voices coming from outside the doors. Seconds later, the doors finally opened, and Amelia gave a silent "thank you" look to the technician in front of them.
They got out of the elevator, satisfied smiles on their faces. No words were needed, the way they were looking at each other showed how much they had both enjoyed what happened a few minutes ago.
"Shit, I gotta go. Emergency," Amelia said while looking down at the page she had just gotten. Kai simply nodded.
"Uh, we can grab dinner after I'm done, if you want, I mean, uh-" Amelia proposed, nervously fidgeting with her fingers.
"Shepherd, relax," they laughed, "I'd love to have dinner with you."
Amelia's eyes were filled with stars, and a large smile was now on her face. She got lost in Kai's eyes once again.
"Go save a life!"
She chuckled as she turned around and started running towards Trauma One. The neuroscientist watched her leaving and bit their lip, remembering how Amelia's soft lips tasted like. They knew for sure how they felt about Amelia, they were coworkers, yes, more than friends, yes and told themself to just take it one day at a time and see how it goes. No rush needed. Not with Amelia.
