Work Text:
Izuku quietly walked into his living room, looking towards the couch in search of his guardian.
Izuku found him quickly, he was sitting in front of the couch, surrounded by papers that were probably due the next day.
Izuku hesitantly walked over towards him, hovering near the man, not sure if he could sit down next to him or not. He was about to give up, go back to his room or the kitchen when the hero looked up and said, “Why don’t you sit next to me kid? I need your help going over these,” he sighs then, “Your classmates aren’t the brightest of the bunch.”
Izuku giggles a bit in good nature, his classmates are very smart, they just didn’t pay much attention in class most of the time. He sits down in the clearing of papers next to his guardian, “How bad is it this time Aizawa-San?”
Shouta groans and leans back against the couch, “Don’t even get me started, how your classmates passed middle school is beyond me.”
“Ahh come on it can’t be that bad,” Izuku says back to him, because really it couldn’t be. Well that’s what he believed anyway until he glanced at the paper Shouta was grading at the top of the stack. It was Minas, and almost all the answers on her paper were wrong. “Okay, nevermind it can be that bad.”
Shouta snorted, “See? This is what I have to deal with everyday, you and Yaoyorozu are a blessing in disguise. Seriously, how do you even spell your name wrong?” He waves a hand at Kaminari’s paper, and true to Shouta’s words, he spelt his name wrong. Instead of Kaminari Denki it was ‘kaminari Delni” Izuku sat there staring for a few seconds, before bursting out in laughter. “Yeah yeah laugh it up, at least you’re not the one that has to grade this.” Shouta sighs and plops his hand down on Izukus head, roughly ruffling his hair. Izuku squeaked, having not expected it and batted Shouta’s hand away.
“You wouldn’t have to deal with it so much if you didn’t assign so much work,” he said cheekily.
Shouta side eyes him, “You’re not getting out of doing work this way kid.”
Izuku deflates sadly, “Damn, it was worth a shot,” he says, faking disappointment. Really he didn’t mind how much work Shouta gave them, it wasn’t too hard and it was always short. Two sided at most, unlike most of their teachers how have them multiple worksheets a day.
Shouta rolls his eyes, and pushes himself up. “Come on kid, let’s go decide what’s for lunch.”
“Okay!” Izuku chirps and grabs the hand that was offered to him, letting his guardian pull him up.
As they sat at the table to eat some ramen, because both of them decided they didn’t want to eat anything too heavy, Izuku thought about how to bring up what they’re going to do that night. Seeing as how it was New Year’s Eve, he knows most of the population of Japan celebrities it one way or another.
He sits there thinking for a few minutes, quietly eating with Shouta. He never really talks when eating unless it’s about something important. He made up his mind, he should probably just be upfront about it. He can’t just sit there waiting for the other to bring it up.
So Izuku takes a breath to calm his nerves and asks, “So uhm- what do you do on New Years?”
Shouta looks up from where he was staring at his food, giving Izuku his attention. “I don’t really do much, kid, most of the time just watching the sunrise and visiting the wishing well in town. Not a whole lot, but stuff I enjoy.”
Izuku perks up, “Really?! That’s so cool. I love sunrise, and sunsets. I’ve never done it on New Years though, but it makes sense why you do. Mother never lets me celebrate it, don’t know why, but I really want it this year,” he pauses then, getting out of his excitement about New Years, looking at Shouta through his bangs, “Uhm if that’s okay with you?”
Shouta gives him a soft look, reaching across the table and ruffling his hair as he says, “Of course it is kid, we can make some sweets if you want too as well.”
“Really?” Izuku says, his eyes shining, he never really bakes, but he loves to do it. Especially with Shouta. “That’d be amazing, Aizawa-San!”
“Alright, we have to go to the store after eating though, we’re low on eggs.”
“Okay!” Izuku says excitedly, quickly finishing his bowl of food.
When they’re both done eating, Shouta disappears into his room, going to get his wallet and a sweatshirt.
Izuku skips down to the front door, putting on his shoes and waiting for Shouta. Their cat, Mayonnaise, an albino tabby, comes up to him, meowing for attention. He squats down to pet her, and she purrs at Izuku. “Aww” he coos at her, “you’re adorable.”
“She is, although she’s a little bastard,” Shouta says as he walks over to them, wearing a normal black hoodie now, leaning down to pull on his combat boots, ‘emo’ Izuku thinks.
“No she isn’t! She’s just a little cheeky sometimes,” Izuku says in Mayos defense. Shouta isn’t wrong, their little cat is a bastard, but he likes to say she’s not. It’s more fun that way.
“Uh huh, so she’s definitely not chewing on your shoes right now,” Shouta points out, grabbing the house keys from a bowl.
What.
He looks down, and sure enough, the little cat is chewing away at his shoe laces, “Hey!” Izuku says as he pulls her away, “that’s not food!”
Shouta laughs quietly as the cat meows at him before racing away, probably to go find more things to chew on. He sighs as he stands up straight. “That cat is on something I swear.” Izuku says as Shouta opens the door.
“She’s on the amount of heart attacks she’s given me, it fuels her rage.” Izuku snorts, and follows his guardian outside.
The walk to the store, which is only a few blocks away, is the exact opposite of their lunch. It’s filled with Izuku rambling away about anything and everything, all while Shouta watches on with a soft look on his face.
By the time they reach the store Izukus already told him about most of the stray cats in the area, and their names. As well as the things he did at the mall with his friends the day before.
Izuku led Shouta through the store, eager to get the eggs and bake. He heard Shouta laugh behind him, but Izuku ignored him, knowing he didn’t mean anything by it.
He came up on the dairy aisle, and stood next to the eggs as he waited for Shouta, rocking back and forth in excitement. Shouta walked into the aisle, purposely going slower than before. “Come ooon,” Izuku whined childishly.
Shouta chuckled and finally came up to him, running his hands through Izuku's hair and lightly pushed him aside to grab the eggs they needed.
“Come on kid, the faster we’re outta here the faster we can cook.” Izuku perked up, and ran up to Shouta, hesitating before grabbing his arm that wasn’t holding the eggs. He peered up at Shouta asking, “What are we gonna make?”
Shouta glanced down at him softly, “Well, that’s up to you kid, we have cookie and brownie mix at home, but before we leave we could grab cake or something else as well. It’s up to you.”
Izuku paused to think, Shouta stopping with him, “Uhm, could we just make brownies and cookies? I don’t really like cake,” he said, glancing at Shouta through his hair.
“Of course kid, like I said it’s up to you,” Shouta started walking again, and Izuku followed him, dropping his guardian's arm as he did.
They paid and left. About halfway through the walk, with Izuku rambling about anything he can think of again, he suddenly pauses, pulling Shouta to stop as well. “What’s wrong kid,” the hero asks concerned.
“It’s a cat! Omg it’s so cute, look Aizawa-San!” Izuku says quickly, pointing at a baby cat that was sitting on a trash can. It was small, obviously not having any owners, and it was gray, with little white spots on it mixed in with the other fur. It was sitting on the trash can, watching people walk by.
“Cute, though it’s a bit small,” Shouta said as he walked a little closer to the kitten. Izuku tugged on his arm, quickly saying, “Can we keep it?”
Shouta snapped his eyes over to him, “Er- kid I don’t know about that, we don’t know how mayo would react to another cat. And this one could be feral.”
“Oh,” Izuku said looking down at the ground, he was worried for the cat, it was too small, even as a baby, “Uhm okay.”
Shouta closed his eyes and sighed, “Okay fine, we can take them to the vet after New Years,” he gave into Izuku's wishes extremely fast, even Izuku wasn’t expecting it.
“Really?!” Izuku asked happily.
“Yes,” Shouta said, Izuku smile got a bit brighter, “but, we’re gonna have to put them in a cage until mayo gets used to them, got it?”
“Yes!” Izuku quickly hugged Shouta around the waist before pulling away, “Uh thank you?” Shouta just snorted and shook his head, “Well? Go on, go get them.” Izuku nodded and walked up to the cat.
It took a bit longer than Izuku was hoping for to get the cat to trust him and let him grab them, but it was so worth it. The kitten was extremely soft, and apparently cuddly.
When they walked up to the house Shouta unlocked the door, and grabbed the kitten from Izuku's hands, “Go put mayo into my room for now, we need to bake anyways and she’ll eat the batter if we turn around. I’ll go put this one in the cage.”
“Okay!” Izuku said as he opened the door, grabbing mayo right as he walked in seeing as how she was sitting on one of his shoes. “Hey doll, you’re gonna have to go into dad's room for now,” he whispered to the cat, making sure his voice was low so Shouta couldn’t hear.
He thought of Shouta as his dad, even though he has only been living with the man for a handful of months. He’s just been so kind and so much more loving than his mother ever was, even before his “diagnosis”.
He was scared to tell Shouta about him seeing him as a father though. While the fear was irrational, he couldn’t help but think that Shouta won’t want him anymore after Izuku got too attached to him. So he kept that little secret to himself, and mayonnaise.
Izuku kicked off his shoes and carried Mayo to Shouta’s room, carefully putting her down and closing the door behind him. Not really worried about how she would react, knowing she’ll immediately go find something to chew on.
When he walked back out he saw the new cat in the cage and Shouta washing his hands, “Come on kid, wash your hands and we can get started.”
“Got it,” Izuku said as he pushed up his sleeves to his UA sweatshirt to pour soap and water onto his hands.
After thoroughly washing his hands, Izuku went up to his guardian to help prepare the cookies first. “Alright kid, can you get milk and eggs? I’ll measure the milk so you can crack the eggs.”
Shouta must’ve remembered he liked to crack eggs, because he always used to do it before Izuku mentioned it offhandedly once.
Izuku nodded and grabbed the milk from the fridge, handing it over to Shouta so he could grab the egg they needed. Cracking it and putting it into the mix when Shouta put the powder mix and milk in.
“Do you want to whisk it? Or I do it?” Shots said as he grabbed the whisk out of the drawer. “Can I?” Izuku asked nervously.
“Course kid, here. I’ll start the oven and grab the ingredients for the brownies while you do that.” The man said, giving him the whisk, before he turned towards the stove.
Izuku nodded absentmindedly and started mixing the ingredients, mindful not to get any on the counter like he’s done before. After a few minutes he was pretty sure it was mixed enough, so he turned towards Shouta who was drying the bowl they’ll use for the brownies, “Is this whisked enough?”
Shouts leaned over and dragged the whisk through it, “Yeah kid, it’s good, thanks,” he patted izuku's head before putting the bowl on the counter.
They made the batter for the brownies and put them both in the oven, cookies coming out quicker then the brownies will.
They went over to the dining table, and Shouta asked, “So do you want to go to the wishing well tonight or tomorrow? Or not at all?”
Izuku thought about it for a few seconds before deciding, “Can we go tonight? Before sunrise, so we’ll have time after to watch the sun?”
Shouta nodded to his words saying, “‘Course kid, we can go before then. We can watch the sun from the roof as well, it’ll give us a better view than the balcony would.”
Izuku smiled happily at him, really Izuku hasn’t felt this much joy in such a long time.
Before he started living with Shouta, he was always ignored. And depressed, not to say he’s still not. But now he feels happy living with his teacher.
While at his mothers, she wouldn’t have let him do any of the things his dad does. She would’ve gotten violent if she saw half of the things he did today, but he didn’t have to worry about that anymore. His mom was arrested, and Shouta wouldn’t ever let him go back to her if she gets released.
That thought comforts him. Shouta wouldn’t ever let something bad happen to him if he could prevent it. And even if he couldn’t stop it, Shouta would try his hardest to protect him from anything that could harm him.
That’s not something Izuku is used to, never feeling this amount of love from someone before. And maybe Shouta doesn’t realize how good and nice he is, but Izuku sure does. And Izuku thinks he can live with this, for as long as Shouta lets him stay at his home.
His thoughts are interrupted by the beeping of the alarm for the cookies, and before he can go take them out, Shouta ruffles his hair and pushes him back down in his seat saying, “I’ll get it Izuku.”
Izuku pouts at his hair being messed up more than it already is, pushing it around to get it back to how it was. Shouta laughs at him as he grabs the tray of cookies from the oven, “What? Don’t like me touching your hair?”
“No,” Izuku grumbles. Actually that was a lie. He likes it alot, he’s touch-starved and he knows it. So any chance he gets he’ll latch onto Shouta. And Shouta apparently knows this as well, seeing as how he rolled his eyes and said, “Sure sure, whatever you say.”
Izuku slouches down more in his seat, fake pouting at his hero as said man puts the cookies on a metal rack to cool. He returns to his seat across from Izuku, “So kid, what do you want to eat for dinner tonight?”
“Can we have Katsudon?” It was still Izuku’s favorite food after all these years, something his mother never ruined for him. “Only if you want to though!” Izuku added on quickly.
“Of course we can Izuku, I asked what you wanted,” Souta said as he got up, going to fridge to grab and defrost the pork. “Thankfully, we have enough to make it tonight. We'll have to go shopping soon. After new years, people go crazy at stores for the next few days.”
Izuku nodded and said, “Don’t shit on people who like shopping, Aizawa-San, just because your emo doesn’t mean everybody is.”
Shouta glared at him, he was leaning against the fridge now, having put the pork out of defrost, “I'm not emo,” Izuku raised an eyebrow and looked at his outfit, all black, even black socks, before looking back at the man, “Shut up kid.”
Izuku squawked, “I didn’t even say anything!”
“You didn't have to, I could see it in your expression.”
Izuku opened his mouth to say something back, but before he could the brownie alarm rang out, startling him and made Shouta go over to pull them out. “Are they done?” Izuku asked as he leaned over the table to get a glance inside the oven.
“Yes, they are,” Izuku went to push himself up, wanting to try one, but Shouta stopped him saying, “Nope, you gotta wait until they’re done cooling before you eat one, don't need you burning your mouth,”
“I wont burn my mouth! Just a quick taste, please?” Izuku begged.
“Knowing your track record you’d probably set the house on fire, wait until they are cooled.” Shouta says as he walks towards the living room.
“Wait! How does that correlate?!” Izuku asked, chasing after him.
“They don’t, that's how bad you are,” Shouta says as he picks up the paperwork from this morning, putting it back into his messenger bag. “I am not that bad,” he responds back, offended.
Shouta looked down at his arm, filled with scars from his quirk, yes, but also random incidents. Like the time he somehow broke their microwave making a hotdog. He doesn't know how it happened, but one second his hotdog was cooking, then the next it was exploding on his arm. “Okay, I can see what you mean.” Izuku pouted and sat down on the couch.
“Exactly. Now want to see how that cat is doing? They are being very quiet.”
“Huh you're right, maybe they're asleep?” Izuku asks as he goes over to the cage the kitten is in. And he was right, they’re fast asleep in the middle of the cage, snoring somehow. Izukus has never heard a snoring cat before, he didn't even think it was possible.
“They're snoring,” He deadpanned. Shouta snorted from behind him, Izuku didn't pay him any mind, “Cats can snore?!” He whips around to look at Shouta, “Yeah kid, they can snore, just like dogs.”
“What.”
Shouta starts laughing at him, covering his mouth when he starts becoming too loud for the cat, “You didn't know dogs could snore did either did you?” He asks once he's done laughing at Izuku, which rude.
“No?! Animals can snore?” Izuku asks, how does he not know this? He feels like he should know this information.
“Yeah Izuku, animals can snore,” Shouta smiles amusingly at him, seeming to find this mind blowing discovery funny.
“You’re the worst, you know that right?”
“I'm aware, you're not the first person to tell me this.” Izuku huffs and crosses his arms. Walking over to the couch to sit next to Shouta. “Do you think the brownies are cooled by now?” Shouta rolls his eyes, “Yes, they're probably done by now,” Shouta stands up and reaches for Izuku. His first instinct is to flinch, but he trusts Shouta to never hurt him, outside of training of course, so he just grins at the man and grabs his hand, letting himself be pulled up.
Later after eating some sweets and watching a few movies together, Shouta gets up to start cooking, telling Izuku to stay put and continue watching the show until dinner. He apparently didn't need help, which is ridiculous, he could still do something, even if he's got it handled.
He sighs and sinks into the spot his hero was sitting at, it was warm. Shouta was always radiating heat at all times of the day, and Izuku took advantage of that anytime he could. He mindlessly watched the show they put on, a very old batman, with bad effects and acting. But it was his favorite show anyways.
He just about finished another episode before Shouta was calling out, “Izuku, dinners done!”
“Okay!” He called out, getting off the couch and turning off the TV. He quickly walked into the kitchen, already asking, “Do you need help setting up?”
Shouta nodded, “Yeah actually, can you set the table for me?” Izuku nodded, “Sure!” He went and grabbed their chopsticks and napkins, not needing to grab bowls since Shouta already had those.
Shouta put his bowl in front of him and sat across from Izuku, like he always does. They said their thanks and started to eat. “This is really good! Thank you Aizawa-San.” Shouta nodded, “Thanks kid, and no need to thank me.”
They continued to eat in comfortable silence, After he eat about almost all his food though, Shouta said, “You’ll probably be extremely tired tomorrow if your staying up to watch the fireworks so-”
Izuku interrupted before he could continue, “Actually, uhm, I don't like fireworks, so I might go to bed early tonight, if that's okay?”
“Course it is Izuku, I'm completely fine with it. Do you want to watch one more episode of Batman before going to sleep, or are you immediately going to bed after dinner?” Shouta asked him, after swallowing the food he just put in his mouth.
“One more episode,” he said cheerfully, he can never go to sleep right after eating, which he said to his guardian. “Okay, well” he said as he stood and grabbed their dishes, bringing them to the sink, “I'll run the dishwasher after you go to sleep, and I might actually sleep early tonight as well, don't feel in the mood for fireworks today.”
Izuku nodded and got up from his chair, shuffling around until Shouta was done putting the dishes in the washer, following him to the couch when he was done. Shouta sat down first and Izuku, without really thinking about it, collapsed onto him. He felt Shouta grunt from the added weight, and he froze ‘ omg why did i do that,’ but before he could overthink it, Shouta wrapped his arm around Izuku's shoulder and relaxed into the couch cushion.
Izuku let out a soft breath of relief and snuggled into Shouta’s arm, watching the show he turned back on with half lidded eyes. He was practically asleep by the time the credits rolled and he grumbled into Shoutas neck when he told him he should probably go to bed by now. Izuku didn't want to move and he didn't have to, because it seems Shouta realized he wasn't going to move on his own and picked him up.
Izuku squeaked from the man's arms and wrapped his arms around his neck to make sure he didn't fall, “Jeez, give me a warning next time,” he said. Shouta snorted softly and pushed open Izukus door with his foot, placing him on the bed. Shouta ruffled his hair one more time before softly saying, “Goodnight Izuku.”
“Night Aizawa-San,” he mumbled into his pillow, having rolled onto his stomach when he was placed down. Izuku was out before Shouta even pulled the covers over his body, not even registering Shouta leaning over and softly kissing his head.
Izuku woke up to Shouta shaking him, “Come on, you gotta get up if you want to go to the wishing well and see the sunrise today.” Izuku groaned and grabbed his pillow to lightly hit the man with it. Shouta let it hit his face. Before shaking him a little more, “Come on i'll make you some hot chocolate before we leave,” Izuku immediately pushed himself up. “I’m up!”
Shouta let out a quiet laugh, “I'm sure you are, come on go get dressed and we can leave for the wishing well in a little.”
“Okay Aizawa-San.”
Shouta left and Izuku rushed to get clothing on, throwing on black sweat pants and a wild wild pussy cat shirt, before grabbing his bright pink hoodie that he stole from his dad, and throwing it on.
When he left his room, His hero was already out there, giving Mayo food. “Isn't it a little early to feed her?”
Shouta nodded, “It is, but I already gave the other cat food so Mayo wanted to be fed as well, but on the bright side, Mayo doesn't want to claw the little ones eyes out. So I think they might like each other.” Izuku giggles quickly and rubs at his eyes tiredly.
“Is the hot chocolate done yet?” he asks, but all Shouta did was snort. “Is that all I am to you? A drink?” he asks, faking being offended.
“Yes,” Izuku deadpans.
Shouta rolled his eyes as he poured them both a cup of the drink, “Yeah i shouldn't give this to you, if this is the only thing you care about.” Izuku whines, “Aww come on, it's not the only thing I care for!”
“That so?”
“Yeah! Mayo’s a pretty cool cat!” Shouta gives him a dead look and goes to pour out his portion of the drink, “Wait! Okay, i'm sorry, I care about you as well,”
“That's what i thought.” Shouta says as he grabs marshmallows from the cabinet, “Want some?”
“Yes please.”
They leave the apartment a few minutes later, after Shouta forced a beanie onto Izuku's curls, saying it ‘was cold out’. He was glad the man did a few seconds later, because it was freezing out.
They quietly walked to the wishing well, it being too early to start a conversation, and as they walked Izuku got closer to Shouta, seeking warmth. It got to a point where the older man sighed and wrapped an arm around him, pulling him into his side and they continued down the sidewalk.
When they finally got to the well, the cold only affected Izuku's toes, his shoes were worn down and he probably was going to need new ones soon, but he was a little scared to ask Shouta about it.
As they walked up Izuku pulled a coin that was in his pocket out, glancing up at his hero who also had a coin before separating and letting Shouta go first. Shouta stared at his coin for a few seconds before tossing it down the well, stepping back to let Izuku know it was his turn now.
Izuku hesitantly walked up to the well and glanced down at his coin, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes, bringing the change up to his face he thought, ‘to whatever's out there, I just hope that Shouta will always be there for me, and can be my dad for as long as we’re both alive.’
Izuku flicked his coin into the well, watching it fall as long as he could. Sighing as he turned around he walked up to Shouta, who put his arm around his shoulder and tugged him into his side, Izuku followed him tiredly.
They arrived home and Izuku tugged off his shoes, leaning against his hero. He was exhausted, but he really wanted to see the sunrise today so he just pushed it aside.
“Hey kid, why won’t you go sit for a few seconds and I’ll go grab us a blanket for when we get on the roof?”
Izuku nodded, “Okay,” he whispered as he went to sit on the couch. He collapsed onto it, sighing as he quickly relaxed into the soft cushions. His guardian ran his fingers through Izuku's hair as he walked past, and Izuku pushed his head into his hand for a second, seeking the soft touch.
Izuku sat there, with his eyes closed as he waited for Shouta to get whatever he was getting ready, before he felt him poke his shoulder. Izuku opened his eyes, looking up at Shouta, giving him a tired smile. “Hey Izuku, come on, we can go watch the sun now. It’s already getting close to sunrise.”
“Okay Aizawa-San,” he said with a yawn.
Shouta pulled him to his feet and led them outside the apartment, locking the door behind them. Shouta had a throw blanket held in his arms, one they usually use for movie nights.
He pushed open the stairs and walked up a few stories, coming to a stop, “Don’t tell anyone kid,” Shouta said with a wink. Before he could ask what he meant, Shouta pulled out a pick lock and opened the door a few seconds, all while Izuku stared at him in disbelief. “Didn’t know you were a delinquent,” Izuku says.
“I’m not, just resourceful.” Shouta says back.
“Having pick locks on is so resourceful,” Izuku said with an eye roll.
“Yes, you get it,” Shouta jokes. Walking over to the ledge of the roof, Izuku followed a few steps behind.
Shouta sat down on the ledge, his feet barely hanging over the side. Izuku walked slowly up to him, hesitating about sitting down.
“Wow,” Shouta says as he grabs Izuku's hand and Riggs him down to sit next to him, “It’s beautiful today.” He said as he spread the blanket over their laps.
“Yeah,” Izuku breathes out, “It really is, dad,” Izuku mumbles as he stares at the sky, lightened up with colors from the sun. He sees Shoura stiffen out of the corner of his eye, and only then realizes his mistake.
He’s too tired to try and fix it though, only saying, “Is that okay?”
Shouta slowly wrapped an arm around him, pulling him into his side and saying, “It’s more than okay Izuku, I’d love to be your dad.”
Izuku feels tears swell in his eyes and tucks his head into his Shouta’s shoulder, raising his hands to grasp tightly at his shirt. Shouta’s arm tightens around him a little more. He then tucked the blanket up to their shoulders, trying to keep him warm and comfortable.
It’s like the wish he made at the wishing well was coming true, and more tears filled his eyes.
Then he feels his Dad kiss his forehead and a few tears did leak out. Slowly dripping onto the shirt he was hidden away in. Shouta wraps his other arm around him, and he feels safe in the arms of his dad, slowly drifting back asleep.
