Chapter 1: Day 1: Period 1

Chapter Text

"Okay, Y/N, no need to freak out." You think to yourself as you get ready for your first day at your new school.

You moved to New Jersey only a month ago, but you were already starting to form a comfortability with its general volume and more than slight filth. Moving from Rhode Island to New Jersey wasn't as much of a culture shock as you were afraid of, besides the sheer amount of things there are to do around now. It's like there's an arcade, bowling alley, theater, and shop strip on every corner.

You hear a knock at the door, it's your brother "Y/N, time to go! If you're late to school I'm late to work and if I'm late to work, we WILL be homeless by the end of the month!"

You roll your eyes "Coming, God!" You knew he was exaggerating about being homeless, or mostly exaggerating.

On the street, on your way to the subway, your brother asks "Nervous?"

"Of course I'm nervous!" You answer "Though I guess it's cool that it's the beginning of the year."

Your brother mimics a dumb SoCal accent "Oh my goooooddddd, it is soooooo cool-ah."

You shove him "Shut up."

You get to the train, then to your station shortly after. You're honestly shitting bricks. It might be the beginning of the year but it's also junior year, everyone knows everyone already.

Cliches? Formed.

Hierarchy? Established.

Your position? Even worse than that of a freshman.

You walked into Brooklyn Highschool, just a public school but it had good test scores. Immediately you were overwhelmed, you might be used to the sounds of the city but the sounds of its teens all smushed into a thin corridor was more than you could handle. You ducked into your first period even though the bell wouldn't ring for another 10 minutes.

The teacher looked up from her desk, confused as to why anyone would be there so early. You were momentarily thankful that your first period was math since you couldn't imagine anyone being there early voluntarily.

You walk up to her "Um, hello. I'm Y/N, I just transferred here from Rhode Island?" You don't know why you framed it as a question. You'd be cringing over that for the rest of the day.

The teacher poured over her roster before finding your name and matching it to what seemed like a seating chart. "Ah, yes! Hello Ms. Y/L/N." She pointed to an empty seat in the middle row by the window "This'll be your seat for the year. Though be warned, I have no issues with moving you if you prove to be trouble." She gave you a stern look.

"Yes ma'am, I understand." You said and nodded curtly as you sat down and pulled a book out of your bag, ready to stare out the window until the bell rings.

You opened your book but didn't really read it, just sort of staring into space and occasionally turning the page so you didn't look like a complete weirdo.

You're startled out of your trance by the bell and the realization that the classroom had filled with your new and noisy peers.

The teacher clapped her hands twice as you put away your book and attempted to find a notebook and pencil.

"Okay class, settle down!" She yelled over the excited teens. "My name is Mrs. Krum. Not Mrs. K, not Krum, not Miss. You will call me Mrs. Krum every time or you will not get an answer." She said as she wrote out her name on the blackboard. You didn't know schools still used blackboards anymore.

"I would like to welcome all new students," She said and looked in your direction, making you sink in your seat a little more. "Know that this class won't be easy, if your old school didn't teach you the course needed then extra help will be available to you."

Even though she wasn't talking to you you got the feeling that you were the only new student. At least, the only new one in this class.

The class went about as expected. Rules were set and textbooks were handed out. You had the vague thought that you might need a bigger bag but other than that there was nothing extraordinary or of note.

Then, at the end of class "Ms. Y/L/N," The teacher called, looking for you. Once her eyes landed on you, she started again "Please see me after class."

You sighed quietly. You didn't want to be branded as a problem kid already but everyone would think you were already trouble. Rumors would start, and you could feel it in your bones that this year wasn't going to go as you planned.
