Chapter 1: A Rude Awakening

Summary:

A mysterious woman wakes up on an unfamiliar world in an unfamiliar body.

Notes:

Hello my friends! I just recently watched Way of Water and fell in love with Best Boy Neteyam, so I decided to write a fanfic where he gets the sweeping romance that he deserves. Only I realized immediately that I am incapable of writing fluff, only drama, so this will be more of a dramatic slowburn, but hopefully it will ultimately be satisfying. Seriously, you guys, I am using this to ease my pain, so I need this to be good as much as you do.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Pov: Unknown

Consciousness came to her slowly, creeping in just enough to bring strange, feral sounds to her ears. Loud whirring bugs, babbling water, and wild, unfamiliar shrieks echoed through the humid air. She was too groggy to parse a single thought, but a feeling of unease sent shivers down her spine.

Slowly her mind caught up enough to send blinding pain through her head. Her body felt heavy and was sprawled out over hard knots jutting from the ground. Tree roots , her mind finally supplied. It took her another moment to piece together that the bizarre sounds she was hearing were from some kind of wilderness. Why the hell was she laying outside?

She peeled her eyes open, but all she could see was blurry colors and light bright enough to make her eyelids slam shut again. She went to groan, but instead some kind of animalistic hiss came out of her mouth. What the hell was that? The pain in her head increased until she nearly screamed.

She gritted her teeth and wiped the blur from her eyes, but it must not have worked because when she reopened them she somehow saw mountains floating in the sky, with sumptuous vines dripping from them and dragons swooping through the air. Her hand drifted to the back of her head and felt blood. Damn, she must have gotten a concussion that was making her hallucinate or something. Was that even how concussions worked? It must be, because nothing else would explain what she was seeing.

Before she could panic or look for help, something leaped out of the underbrush. A hideous creature lunged at her, its maw opening to reveal black fangs that quickly sank into her right arm. She hissed again and punched it in the face so hard that it released her. She scrambled up to her knees, but the sudden change in position made the world spin wildly. Sensing her weakness, the animal ran back for more. Before she could get to her feet, it bit into her right leg. She heard an animal screech and suddenly her throat was sore. Wait.. did that sound just come from her?

Her hands grappled for the creature, grabbing it by two long tube-like extensions off its head and yanking so hard it yowled. She pulled it into the air and was about to dash it on the ground when she suddenly caught sight of her blue, striped arms. What the fuck?! Why was she blue? Her confusion gave the animal time to wrench its head around and sink its dark fangs back into her arm, and suddenly two more of the evil creatures emerged from the jungle and pounced.

This had to be a horrendous nightmare or something, because nothing made sense and everything hurt. She was hissing and bellowing like a rabid animal as she futilely tried to scrape the three monsters off of her. All the while their claws slashed and their fangs mauled. Despite the fight she was putting up, it didn’t take long for them to pin her to the ground. As blood poured from her body, her movements slowed and weakened. There was nothing she could do to stop them. She was going to be ripped apart and eaten alive. It was odd how she could be certain of that, yet refuse to stop fighting. Her weak limbs thrashed and clawed at the predators, ignoring the futility of her efforts.

Suddenly she heard a strange cry and an arrow struck one of the creatures through the chest. It dropped off of her body, dead, but she felt little relief, as the other two continued to attack her. She looked up to see a blue cat-man leap off the back of a dragon and shoot another of the creatures. She was too overwhelmed to be confused, all she could do was hope he would save her life.

One last arrow flew, slaying the final beast, but the damage was already done. Bites and scratches marred her body, and she could have sworn that two of the bites had shattered her bones, leaving her in blinding agony.

As the pain mounted and blood rushed from her wounds, she lost touch with reality. She writhed and whined, her remaining strength rapidly fading until her eyes slid shut and her body stilled. Distantly she heard a deep male voice speaking in a language she did not understand.

“Ma oeyä Eywa! Taronyut yom smarìl!” Strong arms lifted her limp body and her mind escaped into dreamless sleep.

Notes:

I am not fluent in na’vi, so I am borrowing all words and phrases I use in this fic from various sources online. The grammar will probably be wrong, but I'll translate it with what I meant to say.

Translations:
•“Ma oeyä Eywa! Taronyut yom smarìl!”— “Oh my god! The prey eats the hunter!”
(“Taronyut yom smarìl” is an idiom thats actual meaning is “everything that can go wrong will go wrong.”)
