Work Text:
The cute guy had arrived again. He was always here at 7.30, or some time around it. Today: 7:34. Sirius couldn’t help the fact his gaze was being drawn to him again. He had messy golden curls and nice hands and really cute, interesting silver scars on his face. He was tall, way taller than Sirius, and he was always swamped in a jumper, and wearing the same beige corduroys and beaten-up black doc martens.
Sirius knew his name; or how to say it anyway. But he couldn’t spell it. It was Reemas, or Reimos, or Reamus, or something. Everyday, he put a different variant of the name on the cute guy’s cup and flashed the cute guy an apologetic smile.
Today, he ordered his usual - a black coffee, although sometimes he would get a black tea - and waited silently, a twinkle in his eyes. Sirius recognised the look now. He was waiting to see how Sirius spelt his name today. Sirius racked his brains. How else could it be spelt? He hummed a little, shrugged and scrawled down ‘Remus’.
The cute guy glanced at the name and nodded, a broad smile on his face.
“Okay, you got mine.” He squinted at Sirius’ name tag in mock-confusion. “Now it’s my turn, Sirus.”
Sirius rolled his eyes, knowing full well that this ‘Remus’ character knew his name was not Sirus. Remus just smiled and walked out of the shop, clutching his coffee.
And so it went on. Everyday, Sirius would write ‘Remus’, but he made everyday’s look different, whether it was a different font, or smiley face, or flower. And everyday, Remus would deliberately pronounce Sirius’ name wrong, as they got more and more ridiculous.
“Saturn?” Remus said on day 27 (not that Sirius was counting).
Sirius raised an eyebrow. “You know, you aren’t far off, that’s a planet, and my names a star.”
Remus laughed incredulously. “You’re named after a star?”
Sirius opened his mouth to shoot back a retort about the name ‘Remus’, when a sniffy clearing of throat sounded behind him.
He turned around to see an old woman glaring at him. “My tea?”
He apologised, a hint of sarcasm in his voice, and handed her the drink she had ordered.
When he turned around, Remus was gone.
He sighed. He was about to have a good conversation with him, as well.
He looked down at the tip mug, hoping that a few customers had bothered to add to his lousy salary, when he noticed a small brown slip of paper. In neat handwriting, the words ‘Dear Saturn, fancy coffee with me? I know a place…’ was written. Sirius’ heart leapt, and he fought a smile.
The next day couldn’t come fast enough. He got to work early, to ensure he didn’t miss Remus. At 7:28, the door opened with a ding of the bell, and Remus was in the shop, looking at Sirius hopefully. Sirius smiled at him and nodded, and Remus joined the queue, looking relieved.
When he got to Sirius, Remus asked when Sirius wanted to go, and Sirius, desperate to go, asked if Remus would wait until his shift was over.
So Remus waited all morning. He sat in the cafe, drinking black tea, watching as Sirius served the customers.
When Sirius was let off, he and Remus left the cafe, and Remus took him by the arm and dragged him to a little bookshop about 20 minutes away. It was in a part of town Sirius had never been to, and he looked on in wonder.
In the pretty shop, there was a tiny cafe. Remus greeted the owner easily and settled in a corner. Sirius gaped at him.
“If you knew about this place, why would you go to where I work? This is amazing!”
Remus chuckled. “Funny story, actually. Through the window I saw a pretty punk that I fancied.” Sirius flushed and grinned.
When Remus asked what he wanted to drink, Sirius panicked and asked for whatever he was having. He regretted this instantly, as he realised that was black coffee.
They chatted happily until the drinks came, when Sirius began to gulp down the bitter liquid, unconsciously pulling a large assortment of disgusted faces.
Remus laughed at him. “You don’t like coffee, do you?” Sirius shook his head, ashamed.
Remus smiled and called the waiter over. “Hey, Joe? Can we have two hot chocolates? Extra marshmallows? Thanks.”
Sirius smiled gratefully, but then he turned reproachful. “But you never get hot chocolate!”
Remus chucked. “Only because it’s my favourite, and if I have it too much, it won’t be special. I love any type of chocolate.”
Sirius made sure to tuck that away in his memory.
