Understanding the Golden pull of The Mind

Summary:

She was usually the type of person to just go with the flow, especially if things don't end up going the way she planned. That said, dying and waking up in some random world is a bit harder to accept than accepting that a road is closed heading toward work.

Notes:

If you can't tell by now, I have too many story ideas stuck in my head so I'm just randomly writing them out and hoping for the best.

Chapter Text

When she's three years old, her parents surprise her with a cake that congratulates her on becoming a big sister. Perhaps if she was an actual child she would have been surprised, but considering she's been slowly regaining her memories since her birth, she noticed her mother's stomach growing over the months.

She's not quite sure when the pregnancy began, or how far along her mother was when she noticed it, but if she had to guess then she would say that it's nearing the end of the last term. Then again, pregnancies differ from person to person, in her past life her mother never looked pregnant while carrying her or her siblings. For all she knows, her mother in this life could only be a few months along. She won't know until her parents tell her the gender, because if they know the gender then she could make an estimate as to how far along they are.

Her name in this life is Manami Kin, last name first since it seems like she's been reborn as a Japanese citizen.

She's kind of excited to have a younger sister, from what she can remember she was the youngest of six kids. She can remember what life was like having five older siblings, and she knows that she won't treat her younger sibling the way her old siblings treated her. She has one older sibling in this world, an older sister named Aiba.

It wasn't hard to figure out that this world isn't the same as the one she used to live in. Her father has red hair, not Ginger but full-on red hair, and her mother has a beautiful shade of blue hair that doesn't seem to grow out no matter how long her mother's hair gets. Her sister's hair is a pretty magenta that she absolutely loves playing with. By the time her hair grew enough to be able to see it, because for some reason there weren't that many reflective surfaces in this house, she was already nearly three years old. Her hair is a dark purple, it honestly looks like the color of an eggplant. It's a very nice color, it just makes her look a bit pale at times. So far she's the only one in the family that has thin purple eyes, and for some reason her pupils are white.

She doesn't recognize herself at all. There's no similarities to who she used to be.

Both her parents and older sister have some shade of pink for their eye color, she can't help but think of cotton candy every time she looks at her mother. Her parents dote on Aiba, and her sister returns the affections tenfold. It's a bit overwhelming at times but she can leave the room easily enough when that happens. They usually don't notice she's gone until half an hour or an hour passes without seeing her. Sometimes it's nice being able to just go sit in her room and lie in bed. Other times it can be a bit daunting as her mind tries to work against her.

A month before her mother is expected to go into labor, her father packs a bag and takes her out of the house. He says something about how she must be so excited to get to go home… Was she not already home? Kin chose not to ask where they're going, not wanting to irritate her father. Besides, she could be patient, she'll see where they're going once they get there. She's buckled into the car seat, a bag of her things set on the seat next to her. Her father hands her a plushie of a cat before sliding into the driver's seat, black and white… It looks like the cat she had in her past life. She even gave it the same name. Kai, her plushie, was a gift from Aiba. She gave it to her on her birthday two years ago and Kin's been careful not to get it stained or torn since then.

Wherever she's going, she's glad that her father remembered to grab Kai for her. It's pretty light outside, so it must be morning. She didn't get the chance to look at the clock before she was being rushed out. She didn't get to say goodbye to her mother or Aiba either. The car ride takes a while, it's cozy enough with the window down a crack and the radio playing that she's starting to get sleepy.

Kin shook her head, stubbornly staring out the window as she forced her eyes wide open. She doesn't want to fall asleep before they get wherever they're going. This is the first time she's been so far away from home! There's so many cars around them, and the sky is so bright that her eyes are stinging just from looking up. Despite the abundance of cars, there's barely any people out and about walking. At some point, without realizing it, she does end up falling asleep. She's woken up sometime later to the car door slamming shut and her father opening the one to her seat. He smiles at her as he starts unbuckling her.

Kin waits until he grabs her bag before lifting her arms so he could help her get down from her seat.

Is being treated like a child embarrassing and degrading? Yes, yes it is, but she's not about to fuck her body up or gain other's attention by acting like an adult.

Besides, she's finally old enough to walk properly enough for her age. As long as she takes it slow then she won't risk tripping! So while her father carries her bag and goes about making sure the car is locked, she stands on the sidewalk with Kai in her arms and stares up at the house before her.

It's not overly grand or anything like that, it's a decent sized two story house with what looks like a few rose bushes planted under the front two windows. It's a pale blue house, with a dark wooden door. Overall, it looks like any other house she's seen while out and about with her family. Her father said that she was going home, but… were they just visiting someone? What did he mean by home anyway? She doesn't have long to think about it as her father encourages her to head to the front door with him a step behind her. He doesn't rush her as she has to take her time with climbing up the cement steps to get to the door. He shoots her a grin before ringing the doorbell and then knocking twice. It's not a long wait before the door is swinging open and she's left staring up at a man whose gaze immediately seeks her out.

He looks exhausted, is the first thing she notices. Then she stares at his hair, it's a lovely shade of purple that she doesn't quite know the name of but it's so pretty.

He slowly squats down, sending a nervous glance at her father before looking at her.

"Hello Kin-chan… do you remember me?"

"No?" Kin tries not to feel guilty at how dejected the man looks.

"Ah, well that's to be expected." The man shakes his head once before smiling at her, "Why don't we head inside? There's someone who's excited to meet you."

So this is them visiting someone!

How was she supposed to know that this one meeting would change her whole life?

It's warm inside, and there's a lot of green decor all over the place. There's a lot of plants, from what she can see it looks like most of them are succulents and a few small cactuses. She remembers how in her past life she used to grow cactuses while her sister grew succulents all the time. Then they would give them to each other on holidays or birthdays.

She misses her siblings… even if they weren't exactly good people or kind most of the time. They still had their moments where she couldn't help but love them.

Her father sets her bag down by the couch, and Kin stands there as the man says something to her father before quickly going down the hall.

"Kin-chan," Her father lifts her and sets her down on the couch, "I– I should've known you wouldn't remember them, I'm sorry. You were just a baby when you last saw them…"

Oh okay, so she was meeting family friends then, not just visiting an acquaintance. They're not out there for long before she hears someone come rushing down the hall. She twists around to try and look over the couch just to see a woman with purple hair, only ten times lighter than the man's, all but lunge at the couch, and pull her into a tight hug. She flailed around, more than a little creeped out. Even if the people in this house are family friends, that doesn't mean they can just go running up to her and hugging her out of nowhere! Her savior comes in the form of the man from earlier, he wraps an arm around the woman and pulls her away from her. Kin can't hear what he whispered to her but whatever it is, it has the woman choking back a sob.

She screams at the sudden touch on her ankle. Jerking around and nearly falling off the couch, she comes face to face with… a face that looks nearly identical to her own.

Her scream terrified the poor kid, and they burst into tears. The man from earlier sighs like his lungs just decided to give up on holding any air, and comes around the couch to pick up the kid. Meanwhile, she turns to her father silently begging him for an explanation.

"Kin-chan… I'd like you to meet the Shinsou family. Your family."

Shinsou family? What does he mean by calling them her family? Wait. Wait, wait, wait! The purple hair, and that kid— the one who looks just like her, they even had the white pupils like she did… Why did she look like she had more in common with some random family than with her own family? she's pretty sure she's seen someone who looks like that before. Only that can't be possible, that kid can't be who she thinks they are. Because who she's thinking of is a character, a fictional character from a fictional world. Meaning they don't actually exist. This is just some ridiculous coincidence, nothing else.

Right?

"Shh, it's alright Hitoshi, Kin-chan didn't mean to scare you."

Oh dear God, no. Hitoshi. Shinsou Hitoshi. As in Shinsou Hitoshi from fucking My Hero Academia?!

That can't be right, he can't be the character, even if the name and looks are downright uncanny. She knows it's not a matter of the kid having their hair dyed or wearing contacts, she figured out pretty early on that abnormal hair color and eye color is considered normal in this world. Or should she say Universe? Because if this is My Hero Academia, then she's definitely in a whole-ass different Universe… dimension? Okay, she doesn't really know what type of terminology to use for this but she's apparently living in a fictional world. A fictional world where just being outside for any given amount of time could get you killed, what with the random Hero versus Villain attacks, and quirk discrimination this world undoubtedly has. Kin's hands shook, her fingers and knuckles turning white with how tightly she was holding on to Kai.

"Did he scare you that badly? It's okay Kin-chan, I promise, it's okay."

No, no it's not! Nothing about this is okay! She was perfectly fine with her mother and father and Aiba, she even has a little sister on the way. Why did the universe have to see her becoming comfortable in this new life and decide it needs to shake things up a bit?! Everything she thought about, and any plans she tried coming up with for the future, they mean jackshit now. How in the world is she supposed to survive and the world where people develop quirks? Oh God, what if she develops a quirk? She doesn't want a quirk! She wants to be normal!

She wants to go home.

It takes a while for her to calm down, the adults around her panicking didn't help in the slightest. But by the end of the night it's explained to her that the man she thought was her father actually isn't. Which means her mother isn't her mother and Aiba isn't her sister. The man and woman introduced themselves as Shinsou Hanako, and Shinsou Hiroto… her birth parents who have yet to explain why she remembers being with the Manami family since she was a baby. They then introduced her to her twin brother, holy shit she's a twin again! He doesn't look like his older self, not really, but she can see how he could grow up to look like that.

Her yell earlier must have really scared him since he ended up crying himself to sleep. She would apologize, but she's kind of freaking out right now and trying not to start hyperventilating or something like that.

Her parents look so hopeful… did they really not stop to think how growing up for the first few years with a random family would affect how she feels about them? Did they not expect her to be wary of them?

She doesn't know anything about the Shinsou family, Hitoshi's parents weren't really mentioned throughout the manga of the show.

Well, she wasn't really an avid reader or watcher. Mostly only seeing a few clips and reading Maybe 30 or more chapters before skipping and reading random bits. Most of her knowledge comes from seeing random videos made by fans either on YouTube or tiktok. She's also read more than her fair share of fanfiction for My Hero Academia, but nothing serious. Mostly cute little excerpts and some fluff stories. She never really felt like she was entirely a part of the fandom so it felt weird diving into all the AO3 stories offered to her on a silver platter… that doesn't change the fact that she had a couple thousand saved to her read later tab that she kept putting off in case it ended up changing her views on certain characters.

She knows quite a bit of spoilers, and was perfectly fine being spoiled since she really wanted to know all she could. She had quite a few favorite characters… and despite being utterly terrified of them, she remembers how she got attached to the League of Villains characters as well.

Knowing that she's living in a world where each of those characters exist, where they could get her killed— it made her want to scream, cry, and never leave the house again. Her parents, and the man she thought was her father who isn't, but is apparently her godfather, keep trying to talk to her but she's not listening. It's not entirely by choice either, she can barely hear them over the rushing sound of her heartbeat pounding in her ears. She's trying to wrap her head around all of this, can't they just wait a fucking minute and give her time to adjust?!
