Work Text:

Needless to say that Jupiter North is exhausted.

A month. A ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ away from home to deal with utter lack-wits and their disasters, being held accountable for said disasters when theyโ€™re not even remotely close to being one of his workers because of blatant favouritism and when he finally, ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜บ is given leave to go home he arrives to ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด?! He takes deep breath, fist slowly releasing its unrelenting grip on the now crumpled paper. Leashing his snapping temper his sharp blue eyes continued to read the letter which arrived in his office today.

How could he not when she had slid into his life and heart as easily as she commanded the wunder that was always gathered around her? Jupiter ran a hand up his face that he threaded through his bright copper locks, pulling at it none too gently, the pain from it helping clear his thoughts and calm his anger.

Oh theyโ€™ll get a reply all right, an ๐˜ฆ๐˜น๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ one.

He knows how strong and resilient Mog is, he knows that sheโ€™s capable of doing this after everything sheโ€™s been through, that sheโ€™s made peace with her childhood and accepted that she isnโ€™t a curse on anybody. But he knows all too well that not all scars can truly, fully heal, especially when those scars are from people you love.

He shook off the feeling of blood from his hands, the feeling of a desperate scream from his throat and the sight of his sister and brother-in-law behind his eyes and steeled his core as he neared the city of his heart.

*๐—ฆ๐—ž๐—œ๐—ฃ*

The door opened instantly, the warmth and the bright lights of the hotelโ€™s lobby greeting him. A sense of relief washed over him as he was met with the sight and smell of home.

He looked around the room for any sign of his new guests and a familiar head of charcoal hair touched with glow of wunder. Kedge was busy with a guest at the moment so he wouldnโ€™t be of help right now and neither Fenestra nor Martha is here so-

โ€œJupiter!โ€

His head quickly snapped towards the owner of that bright voice, a grin easily tugging on his lips as he spread his arms wide to welcome the incoming hug. โ€œMog!โ€ his own voice while matching the bright, excited tone of his daughter was coarse and scratchy. Though it seems Morrigan hadnโ€™t realized for the time being as her smaller figure barrelled into his sturdier frame, the pair sharing a big bear hug before he pulled away to place a kiss on the girls head.

Before he could get a word out however, she had started to tug on his arm leading him from the lobby towards the stairs. โ€œGood Evening and welcome home sir!โ€ the hotel concierge greeted him as they past, โ€œEvening Kedge!โ€ was all Jupiter could reply with as his scholar hastily dragged him.

โ€œUm Mog you might want to slow downโ€ฆโ€ she only shook her head โ€œNo! I have so much to tell you! And besides no one should go and have a nap on an empty stomach!โ€ she quipped as she bounded up the stairs gracefully while he himself stumbled on them clumsily โ€œAlso why does your voice sound like that?โ€ the wundersmith added as a forethought โ€œLong story, what do you mean by nap?โ€ that particular part had caught his attention because he can clearly tell that she wasnโ€™t talking about herself.
โ€œOh! Youโ€™re going to take a nap after tea, you look dreadfulโ€ Morrigan frowned up at him as they finally slowed down to a brisk walk, he raised a brow โ€œAnd what if I donโ€™t want to?โ€ the witness asked, his mouth curling into a familiar lazy smirk, โ€œNothing about what I said was a request Jupiter.โ€ โ€˜๐˜ž๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฏโ€ฆโ€™ her voice held an iron finality that he was sure she picked up from Ezra during lessons that a chill went down his spine at the thought.

He could only sigh in resignation to his fate, when they had reached the door to his office, Morrigan quickly threw open the doors and pushed him inside. The click of the knob echoed through the room as it shut, blanketing the room in shadows, the only light coming from the dying sun through the curtains. Another faint click sounded and the office now bathed in a warm light, the sight of a clean and organized table greeting him, papers neatly stacked and pens in their proper places โ€œBefore you ask, yes I did clean your office and that paper on the desk is a list on where everything is, I wrote it while I was cleaning so I wouldnโ€™t forgetโ€ he heard Morrigan explain from behind him, a sharp snap of her fingers following after as she ignited the flames of the fireplace. Jupiter shook his head fondly as he laughed under his breath and turned to sit across from her, taking one of the scones dipping it in clotted cream and promptly tossing it in his mouth.
Morrigan shoots him an incredulous looks as she sips her tea, he shrugs, heโ€™s tired and hungry can you really blame him?

After snacking on a few(mฬถoฬถsฬถtฬถ) of the delightful treats and a few sips of tea(aฬถlฬถlฬถ wฬถhฬถiฬถlฬถeฬถ hฬถiฬถsฬถ bฬถeฬถlฬถoฬถvฬถeฬถdฬถ sฬถcฬถhฬถoฬถlฬถaฬถrฬถ lฬถoฬถoฬถkฬถsฬถ aฬถtฬถ hฬถiฬถmฬถ aฬถsฬถ iฬถfฬถ hฬถeฬถ wฬถeฬถrฬถeฬถ aฬถ cฬถhฬถidฬถ), Jupiter braces his arms on his knees as he said โ€œMog, sweet, can you ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฆ give good old Jupiter a re-cap of last month while I was a away?โ€ the effect was instantaneous, her posture stiffened and her smile turned into a hard frown. โ€œMog?โ€ he asked unsure whether or not this would be a welcome topic.

Morrigan cleared her throat as her dark, button-black eyes met his bright, sky-blue ones, and Jupiter could see a steady flame in them that refused to be snuffed out by anyone again. โ€œItโ€™s a long story but sureโ€ she shrugged, shoulders relaxing as she leaned back in her chair โ€œLook, if this is something you donโ€™t want to tell me yet itโ€™s fineโ€ฆโ€ what he really didnโ€™t want is Morrigan tearing open old wounds to satisfy his curiosity before sheโ€™s had a chance to get accustomed to the pain, but she just waved her hand โ€œItโ€™s alright, really. Though youโ€™ll be the one to re-tell this to Jack because when I say this is a long story I mean itโ€ another soft laugh escaped him before he knew it โ€œAlright deal.โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆhmmmโ€ she absently drummed her fingers on the arms of the chair in thought, โ€œI supposed it began just two or three days after you were called away, while I was working on something Ezra sent in a messageโ€ฆโ€ she reached into her blazerโ€™s inner pockets and pulled out a letter which she handed to him to read. The familiar sight of Ezraโ€™s elegant handwriting greeted him as he scanned the contents.

โ€œWell this isnโ€™t goodโ€ Jupiter frowned at the letter and Morrigan nodded in agreement, โ€œYeah, well after that arrived I obviously went to the elders to tell them about my worries, and no I was very careful not to give out any hints that I have any relation to the Republic, just some quote on quote โ€˜๐˜‹๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜Ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ดโ€™โ€ he snorted and rolled his eyes as she grimaced at her own words โ€œAfter that happened they thought about it and decided to take my word on it and took it to the prime minister to address itโ€ฆโ€

Long story it really was since they ended up talking for nearly two hours before the entire month was covered and by the Divine Thing did he miss a lot, he was almost disappointed. โ€œI know you said in passing that your friend Lam is actually the fourth Princess Lamya Bethari Amati Ra of Far East Sang and I know for a certain she has a place to stay here in Nevermoor that can house them just fine since they seem to be close, royal duties asideโ€ Jupiter began, munching on a tea cake, which were brought up by Martha earlier bless her soul, โ€œSo youโ€™re wondering why theyโ€™re staying here?โ€ Morrigan finished for him, raising a brow โ€œItโ€™s not like I donโ€™t want them here, Iโ€™m just curious thatโ€™s allโ€ he amended quickly, recognizing the mischievous glint in her eyes. The wundersmith pouted, sensing that her chance to tease was thwarted.

โ€œTheyโ€™re being cautious, after all this is a temporary stay and if the fact that they illegally smuggled Lam into the Free State was revealed to the public theyโ€™d be executed. This isnโ€™t like my situation when I was eleven because my family wasnโ€™t involved in the whole Eventide disaster, they were actually very involved in sending her here so theyโ€™re being careful, especially because Chancellor Ecclestone and Lord Mayor Cheronobog are very much against the House of Ra for years.โ€

โ€œAnd you know all of this how?โ€ she shrugged โ€œEzra obviouslyโ€ she rolled her eyes as she stuffed her face with another tea cake. โ€˜Of courseโ€™ he sighed stifling a laugh when something came to mind โ€œDid you-?โ€ โ€œYes Jupiter, theyโ€™re aware of everything they need to know about the hotelโ€ he raised a brow โ€œSuch as?โ€ she sighed and counting all of them on her fingers while she stated them out loud.

โ€œThe Hotel is sentient so donโ€™t be rude to itโ€ โ€˜๐˜š๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏโ€™ he nodded in approval โ€œif you have any complaints go to Jupiter or Kedge make sure your complaints are constructive criticism though or else, do not, under any circumstances, mention the Presidents magnificats ๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ especially if Fen is within earshotโ€ he snorted at the memory of him correcting her on her first Morningtide in Nevermoor โ€œCursed Children do not exist here so donโ€™t bring it up it is a very sensitive subjectโ€ he hoped that Corvus Crow got that message of ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต one โ€œfeel free to explore the hotel and enter the rooms except for the living quarters, guest rooms, private rooms and locked rooms, additional note to the previous one, if you ever come across the Hall of Shadows on the seventh floor of the west wing and decided to put on a shadow play just know that the shadows will turn scary and if one escapes donโ€™t worry it will fade on its own so donโ€™t let any eye-patched ๐˜ต๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต tell you otherwiseโ€ the witness gave her a flat look โ€œWhat? Itโ€™s trueโ€ Morrigan chuckled, he only huffed in response shaking his head fondly โ€˜๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ' he gestured for her to continue โ€œFrank, our party planner, is ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ง not a dwarf vampire itโ€™s very easy to mix the two up so be careful if donโ€™t want to be excluded in public events here, if you get lost just scream for Kedge since he knows the hotel like the back of his hand and finally if you have any additional questions but no staff is around you can ask the crows, youโ€™ll understand what I mean after you look aroundโ€

Jupiter nodded in approval โ€œVery good, very smartโ€ he tried not to laugh at Morriganโ€™s not-so-subtle preening, it was endearing truly. โ€œDo you think we can turn those into pamphlets to give out to first time customers?โ€ she laughed and he followed after โ€œI donโ€™t think some of them would agree to that ideaโ€ the girl said in-between laughs โ€˜๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏโ€™ he snickered, he was about to quip back when the door slammed open to reveal his nephew Jack, still in his school uniform with a majestic scowl on his face โ€œWhat the actual ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ is Mogโ€™s Republic family doing here?!โ€ he screeched โ€œLanguage.โ€ he told the boy sternly with a barely straight face before dissolving into fits of giggles, not long after Morrigan joined in and they both laughed to the melody of the younger witnessโ€™ protests.

After another round of Monthly Re-caps with Morrigan Crow and three more plates of treats ๐˜Š๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ <3) Poor Jack was finally up to speed with everything that happened and stopped being annoyed at both of them. โ€œAll right now thatโ€™s finishedโ€ the girl began, standing up from her chair and stretching โ€œOff to bed for a quick nap before dinner, ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ถ๐˜ดโ€ she emphasized with a glare in the witnesses direction, the younger one groaning in exasperation, the older of the two just clapped him on the shoulder in sympathy โ€œCโ€™mon boyo, you know sheโ€™s not going to budge on thisโ€ which earned him an eye roll in response, Morrigan was already bouncing towards the door when he finally got his nephew to get up from his seat and walking towards the door. โ€œIโ€™m going to go get my stuff downstairs first before my napโ€ another eye roll โ€œletโ€™s pray Frank didnโ€™t kidnap my celloโ€ he muttered sending a quick wave towards them before disappearing down the hall.

Jupiter turned back towards his scholar who was just casually disintegrating a ball of fire (๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ) and held his arms open for a hug which she greatly took. โ€œIโ€™m so glad youโ€™re backโ€ฆโ€ he heard her mutter which he squeezed her gently in response โ€œIโ€™m happy to be home Mogโ€ he pulled back and placed a kiss on the crown of her head โ€œAnd Iโ€™m so ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ proud of youโ€ he pressed their foreheads together โ€œRemember that always Morriganโ€ she sniffled then nodded before pushing him away with a watery laugh โ€œOk thatโ€™s enough feels uncle, I just filled in for youโ€ she mumbled, toying with one of her golden cufflinks, he ran a hand down her head โ€œItโ€™s still more than what people your age couldโ€™ve handledโ€ she swatted his hand away with a pout โ€œYeah yeah ok youโ€™re welcomeโ€ he chuckled before being promptly turned around towards the direction of his room โ€œOk now get your rest or so help me god!โ€ Jupiterโ€™s laughed echoed throughout the halls.
