They had always been friends, he can’t even remember when they weren’t. He can remember every little thing they had done and gone when they were younger like it was only yesterday. What happened to them? Where had the times gone?
There was a soft ping nearby him.
His eyes darted to the phone on the carpet beside him. He lifted his head slightly to look at the lit-up screen. A new notification had appeared over the lock screen of an old photo of him and Wei Wuxian from when they had gone to their family's lakehouse. They had spent the summer swimming, catching fish, hunting quails and even annoying the neighboring residents. How old were they back then?
Recognizing the username, he lowered his head back onto the floor to stare at the ceiling fan for a few moments.
Wei Wuxian....
He went on vacation just recently, didn’t he? Even brought along that one cold, straight-faced guy they used to go to class with.
He had heard he was his new boyfriend, wasn't he? Although he was not surprised Wei Ying managed to win him over. He's such a fun and kindhearted person. He put others before himself, even if he knew he'd get hurt in the end.
Jiang Cheng should know, he too was not immune to his charms.
He pulled himself up into a sitting position and grabbed his phone. Unlocking the screen, he tapped the notification. Wei Ying appeared to be having a ton of fun wherever he was. Looks to be a resort of some kind.
He swiped through the multiple photos the other took. The guy really enjoy taking pictures, didn't he?
Oh.
Here’s one with him and that Lan Wangji guy.
He had such a nice, big smile compared to the other's tiny nonchalant one. Looks like they're on what appears to be some beach chairs under an umbrella.
It reminded Jiang Cheng of back when they were kids and they used to go to the ocean. They'd spend the whole day there and come home sunburnt and covered in sand.
He couldn't help but smile at that memory as he swiped to another picture. His smile suddenly dropped.
Was that a…
Was that a ring on his finger?
His eyes darted to the description beneath the photo.
Guess who just got engaged!
He clutched the phone to his chest and laid back on the carpet, his eyes staring blankly at the ceiling once again.
Oh. So he was getting married. He supposed congrats are in order, huh? He finally settled down after all these years. Congratulations.
He wondered, could that have been them if they hadn’t of fought all those years ago? He wondered if he could have been the one to give the ring to the other.
Suppose they'd never know, huh?
His vision slowly began to become blurry.
Why was he crying, this should be a happy day. His best friend is getting married. He should be overjoyed.
This should be a happy moment…
“So why does it hurt so much?” He murmured as he slowly curled up into himself. He held the power button to his phone shutting it off. “Suppose this is goodbye then, huh?”
