Work Text:
It was a warm spring day in Coolsville. The Mystery Inc. gang was chilling at their local hangout. For once, they weren't attempting to unravel any mysteries or deal with the paranormal. Nope, they were just relaxing at the malt shop. It was nice to be in their hometown without dealing with outlandish individuals in disguises or the occasional authentic monsters: just four friends and one goofy talking dog. The gang seemed content with avoiding any of the wild situations that nearly ended with them getting killed.
Three of the four members of Mystery Inc. were humming while filling out applications for various schools to enroll in the fall—Daphne for the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Fred applying to Berkeley, and Velma trying to get into MIT. Only Shaggy wasn’t filling out a college application. He was a simple guy with simple needs. All he ever wanted was food. But, even so, he felt a little down that the gang would soon be going separate ways.
"You know, Shaggy, you could apply to a culinary school," Daphne said, playfully. "Then you could become a professional chef—assuming you don’t eat all the food you’re cooking!"
"Ha, ha, very funny, Daph," Shaggy muttered. "But Scoob and I are perfectly fine, just chilling out here. No need for all that fancy stuff."
"Well, you should think about the future, Shaggy," Velma pointed out sensibly, adjusting her glasses. "We’ve had enough close calls. It’s safer to follow a more traditional career—one that pays, too."
Shaggy shrugged. "Not my groove, Velm. I’ll see you guys later. Come on, Scoob, let’s hit that Chinese buffet down the street."
"Right, Raggy!" Scooby agreed, and the pair headed out, leaving their friends to fill out their applications in silence.
The gang exchanged a glance. "They’ve got to find a purpose outside of eating their weight in food every day," Fred remarked.
"Well, we can't force them to change," Daphne said with a sigh. "But what are you going to do, Fred?"
Fred shrugged. "Point taken. Still, we need to finish these or we’ll miss the deadlines."
Elsewhere, Shaggy and Scooby had just been kicked out of yet another restaurant in town. This time, though, they weren’t upset about being hungry. They were more upset because they felt... empty. They didn't know what to do with themselves now that their friends were moving on. They wandered to a nearby playground and sat down on a swing, deep in thought.
"What do you think, Scoob?" Shaggy sighed. "Should we just move on like the rest of the gang? They're all serious about going to college, and we're just... stuck here."
"Raggy, I... I no like," Scooby said, his tail drooping.
"I know, buddy. I just don’t know what’s next for us."
After a few more minutes of quiet reflection, they made their way home. But when they opened the door, something felt off. It was unlocked. Shaggy was sure he had locked it earlier. Fear set in as he thought they were about to be robbed. "Scoob, you ready to run if there’s a burglar?"
But before they could do anything, they heard a voice from the kitchen, "Hey, are these all the snacks you have right now? After traveling several thousand light years, we could really use some real food."
Shaggy froze. He knew that voice. His heart skipped a beat. It couldn’t be.
"Crystal?!" he exclaimed, wide-eyed as she stepped into the living room, her presence radiating confidence. She was in her human disguise, as was Amber, her dog.
Scooby gasped, tail wagging. "Ruh-roh, it’s Crystal!"
Crystal laughed. "Well, I was waiting for you to get home! And, unfortunately, we don’t have an intergalactic cell phone plan for Moldavite, so we couldn't keep in touch."
Shaggy stood still, his mind reeling. "What are you doing here? I thought—"
"I know, I know," Crystal cut in with a playful grin. "But first things first. Let me make us some dinner. Then I’ll explain everything."
Thirty minutes later, Crystal had prepared a feast that smelled irresistible. But Shaggy and Scooby weren’t as hungry as usual. They were too absorbed in the shock of seeing Crystal and Amber again. Crystal wasted no time in telling them her story.
“Moldavite is a planet just like Earth, but with a few key differences," she began, sitting comfortably across from them. "It’s home to a species called the Modavitians. And... you’re right about the gem. Moldavite is a green gemstone that crashed into your planet about 15 million years ago. The funny thing is, your world named it after my home."
"Wait, what?!" Shaggy blinked in confusion.
"It’s a long story," she smiled. "But in short, Moldavite is a little larger than Earth, with rings just like Saturn’s. The people there are pretty advanced, and they’re obsessed with gemstones—everything from healing crystals to energy sources."
"So, you're... a gem person?" Scooby asked, trying to wrap his head around it all.
"In a way," Crystal nodded. "And yes, we’re a peaceful people, focused more on self-defense than aggression. But the reason I’m here—" She paused, glancing at Amber before continuing. "I’ve been sent as a liaison between Moldavite and Earth. I applied for the job, and I thought it would be a good fit. But honestly, I missed you guys. I’d grown fond of Earth, and I wanted to come back."
"So, you're gonna stay here?" Shaggy asked, his voice softening. He could barely believe it.
"Yes, with Amber. We’re going to live here and help bridge the gap between our two worlds."
Shaggy’s heart raced. "And you want us to help you... fit in?"
"Exactly," she smiled warmly. "I’m still learning how to adapt to human society, and... I think you could help. Maybe show me the ropes? Besides, there’s someone else who thinks you need a little more direction in your life, Shaggy."
Shaggy frowned. "You mean college?"
"I do," she said gently. "I think you should apply to culinary school. Not just for me, but for you. You’ve got the passion, Shaggy, and now it’s time to put it to use."
Shaggy sat back, feeling the weight of her words. Could he really go for something like that? But then again, maybe it was time to finally step up and find his own path.
The conversation turned to other topics, and after a while, Shaggy realized he was actually considering it. Maybe a culinary school wasn’t such a bad idea. It felt good to think about the future, even if it was a little scary. "You know, maybe I will look into it," Shaggy said slowly, his voice more confident than before.
"And I’ll be right here," Crystal said with a wink, "ready to help you."
As the evening wore on, the four of them sat back and talked, laughed, and even discussed the future. Shaggy and Scooby were still trying to wrap their heads around everything, but one thing was certain—this new chapter of their lives was going to be out of this world.
