“I don't know why you're crying, but doing so won't solve anything" Pugsley turned around in fright at the sound of his older sister's voice behind him: her arms were crossed over her chest, she was in her pajamas and her hair was down; the latter fact made her look more like one of the many ghosts that inhabited the mansion rather than a flesh-and-blood person.
He just looked at her, he partly deserved the shock for not closing the door of the bathroom near the dining room.
“If you let me know who caused it" she added, "I can do something about it" the slight movement of her hand made Pugsley fix his gaze on the recently made scar.
Wednesday did not reciprocate his embrace, but neither did she make an effort to push him away. The gesture said all needed to know.
Nightmares.
Something she was unable to understand, the events leading up to the forced recess at Nevermore were dangerous situations, yes, but the consequences did not reach beyond physical marks, some permanent. Although Wednesday had not wanted to talk too much about the matter, the scant information delivered seemed to be enough to affect Pugsley.
“Go to sleep" she ordered as his brother walked away "as you can see, I am safe and in my right mind.”
He looked down at his feet. Wednesday pursed her lips slightly, her version of a sigh.
“All right.”
She allowed him to rest his head on her lap after guiding him to the large couch in the living room. Curled up on himself, Pugsley looked like a cat.
“Try to sleep.”
“I'm trying.”
“You have your eyes open" his effort to obey was noted, but he quickly opened them, looking at her again. The situation was starting to get frustrating after several minutes.
Finally, Wednesday opened her mouth.
“Pugsley, close your eyes" she ordered gently, "and if you tell anyone about this, I'm going to murder you.
She cleared her throat.
It always seems more quiet in the dark
It always feels so stark
How silence grows under the moon
Constellations gone so son
Her younger brother closed his eyes.
I used to think that I was bold
I used to think love would be fun
Now all the stories have been told
Except for one
Pugsley sank a little deeper into her lap, she gently moved her hand closer, in a gesture that simulated a caress without touching him, similar to the way her mother did. The thought of that was not as unpleasant as she would have expected.
As the stars start to align
I hope you take it as a sign that
You will be okay
Everything will be okay
And if the seven hells collapse
Although the day could be my last
You will be okay
When I'm gone, you'll be okay
Her younger brother's hand rested on top of hers, grasping it as if it were a stuffed animal. Wednesday allowed him to do so without reciprocating the gesture.
And when creation goes to die
You can find me in the sky
Upon the last day
And you will be okay
When he looked at him again, Pugsley was fast asleep. That solved one problem, but created another: she couldn't move without waking him up. Fortunately, the solution had been trying to go unnoticed for several minutes.
“You can come out of there, Enid" from her place on the couch, she couldn't see her, but heard footsteps from the kitchen.
“I swear I was coming for a glass of milk" her expression was guilty "I didn't mean...”
“My threat wasn't just for him" Wednesday clarified. Enid made a strange gesture of running her fingers over her lips, moving them as if she were manipulating a lock, and then pretending to throw something away.
“Do you want me to carry it?”
“I'd appreciate it.”
“Here, hold my glass.”
The walk to the room was silent, none of them said anything even after settling Pugsley in his bed, where Enid left him covered and the door closed.
Due to the large number of specters and entities that inhabited the Addams mansion, Wednesday specifically requested that her companion be in the room next to hers, so they walked back down the hall together, in the direction of their respective bedrooms. When they found themselves in front of the doors, Enid spoke.
“I like that side of you" she confessed with one hand on the doorknob.
“I'm afraid I don't understand you.”
“When you're not afraid to show that you care about things" she clarified. In the darkness, her eyes glowed with the glint of nocturnal predators, in a beautiful bluish light.
“My family matters to me" Wednesday replied calmly, “and..." she glanced sideways at her, "and...”
"I know.” You don't have to tell me.
“I care about you too.” But I want to.
Enid smiled.
“By the way" she added when half her body was already inside her room, "you look very pretty with your hair down. Good night" closed the door hurriedly.
Wednesday blinked.
“Coward" she whispered, pretending that those words had not taken her by surprise.
Already lying on her bed, she looked up at the wall, on the side that divided her room from the guest room that was given to Enid. Okay, maybe she was being a little unfair to her little brother.
Although then again, she could admit that it wasn't the same thing.
Just didn't want to see that face covered in mud, blood and tears again. Wednesday closed her eyes and made an effort not to delve into those thoughts.
Enid was fine. That was all that mattered.
