Work Text:

Max would’ve considered her life fairly normal, she had two annoying little sisters and a very annoying mother. Okay, maybe she should give some credit to her mom, she wasn’t that bad. Sometimes. It wasn’t until a few days ago that she even considered herself to be anything but the norm, a lot of things made sense now, looking back. So what? She liked girls. She covered her face and let out a long groan. It wasn’t like her mother would react badly, because Max knew she wouldn’t, Sam would just be confused. Very confused considering the strange situations Max constantly found herself in, a lot of which included men. She heard the door to the house open and she scrambled out of bed, not even bothering to make herself look slightly presentable before running down the stairs.

“Woah!” Sam started, shocked to see her eldest downstairs, “What’s got you in such an energetic mood?” She laughed at her own comment before grabbing the groceries she had left on the floor and closed the door with her foot.

Max sighed and rolled her eyes, “I was hoping I could tell you something, but clearly you’re too busy.” She followed Sam into the kitchen anyway. Max had to tell her.

“What?” Sam said, organzing what she had just bought, “You’re acting real fuckin’ weird today, you realize?”

“Well obviously! I’m trying to tell you something but you’re acting like a bitch, mom!” Sam groaned in annoyance, turning to face Max.

“I can’t hear you behind that shitty attitude of yours,” Max just groaned and went back upstairs. She sat on her bed, feeling slightly defeated. She knew not to expect much from Sam, but clearly she was just not in a great mood that day. She grabbed her phone, finger hovering over Rich’s contact, but she quickly put her phone aside. Calling Rich wouldn’t be a bad idea, he was basically like Max’s father and he was gay, but she needed to do this on her own terms and in her own way. Even if they might not be the greatest.

Fuck it.

She had never gotten out of bed so quickly before, it even made her a little dizzy. She ran downstairs and looked for her mother, who had left the kitchen. Max almost got a little frustrated until she found Sam in the living room with none other than Rich, good thing she didn’t call him earlier.

Max took a deep breath and walked towards them, heart pounding in her chest. Sam and Rich looked up at her as she approached them, and Max felt like her throat was closing up.

"Mom, I need to tell you something," Max said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Sam raised an eyebrow, but Rich gave her an encouraging smile. "Yeah, that much was clear from earlier. What’s up? You feel like telling me now?" Sam joked, hoping she could lighten up her clearly tense daughter.

Max took another deep breath. "Dammit, mom, you make it so fucking hard," she paused, the room was completely quiet, “Fine. I like girls,” she blurted out. She didn’t let anyone else say anything before she continued, “I know it might be confusing because I ha-”

Sam interrupted her, “Yeah, well we had our suspicions after seeing how you looked at that one girl from your class,” Rich hit her with his elbow, “Hey! I’m just telling her the truth!” Rich stood up and gave Max a big hug, which she of course returned.

“We’re both very proud of you for telling us, Max. Coming out isn’t easy.” Sam rolled her eyes and snorted.

“Yeah, you can bring your girlfriends home, just don’t be too loud.”

“Mom!” Max whined, blushing, her face was completely red.”
