Work Text:
It knew It was different. It remembered things It shouldn't. It remembered Gary pouring money into It to keep It running just as easily as It remembered him pouring paint on It's back seat. It remembered the long car trips, the ones where Gary would be half asleep the whole way before pretending to be asleep so they would carry him inside. It remembered watching him grow... to become an adult.
It remembered Gary struggling every day, trying to get to a job he hated. It wished that It could be better for him. It knew that It did not run correctly anymore. Perhaps It had known this was coming. Perhaps they all had. It tried so hard to start for Gary, but most of the time It couldn't. It was failing Gary, and It needed to teach him how to let go.
The Morning was like most, It struggled to start, but It limped It's way across the town. It remembered Gary buying coffees for his coworkers despite how It knew that was not a responsibility Gary was supposed to have. It had sat patiently as It always had, when It suddenly felt something shift. Change.
The Disturbance threatened to swallow up It's human, but It couldn't let Gary go alone. So, It tightened It's seatbelts and held onto Gary as tightly as It dared. It immediately noticed It was in a different place, and It poured everything It could into starting perfectly for Gary. It stayed quiet and followed what It was told. Even as It was kicked around and left in the woods alone. As It was filled with humans and Digimon alike, some sitting in the worst possible places. Like on It's roof, It did It's best to drive smoothly and not knock them over.
It appreciated the small creature that had given It a fuel source, making it easier for It to continue working to protect Gary. It had seen the firewall getting closer, and It could feel the danger that hung in the air. It had seen the blow heading for Gary, and It made sure It's door was in the way to take the hit. It hurt, but It continued on into the city, It watched patiently as It's boys made a mess with themselves in the middle.
So... when The Incident occurred, It gave up It's hiding, and It did whatever it took to save them. After all, It was doing what They had wanted. The ones in the sky looking down over those below. They had named It Vanmon.
