Consolation Prize

Summary:

"Truly, I should just let the hope that there’s any chance of me not being shat upon by the powers that be wither and die already.”
Karkat finally seems to run out of breath long enough to realize that his long-winded, if technically accurate tirade isn’t really making your current situation any better.
Truthfully, if anything it will only serve to demoralize the already tenuous positivity your group has managed to glean about your future prospects of survival.
You don’t really have a lot to spare as it is.
As it stands, the fridge that has apparently just popped into existence in the middle of your village is quite foreboding.

Chapter Text

“Dude are you fucking serious? This shit again?”

“That’s it. The universe goddamn hates us. It really fucking has it in for us, which I guess we all pretty much already knew, but I don’t think it’s ever been this goddamn blatant about it before. Truly the cherry on top of the pure, fetid shit-heap that has been our lives.”

“And for what? Why? What could the purpose possibly fucking be, for bringing this goddamn thing back again? Our lives already suck major crusty, unwashed, shit-caked ass. We live on a mother fucking lifeless rock with no hint of civilization other than our own fucking selves. We don’t even have proper goddamned electricity, and now you’re telling me that we for some reason have to deal with this shit now too? Oh, please almighty universe, allow me to prostrate myself on the ground before you so you can keep fucking me in the ass as is befitting one who has repeatedly had the gall to believe the shitfest that has been our lives might finally be over. Truly, I should just let the hope that there’s any chance of me not being shat upon by the powers that be wither and die already.”

You can’t help the odd mixture of fear and anger that the ominous object brings forth in you. The strange smidgen of guilt that is also present is as perplexing as it is unwelcome.

You look to your wife to gauge her reaction.

Her face is one of pure anger and, you would venture to guess, no small degree of bloodthirst. Although some level of bloodthirst is present in her at all times given her status as a sexy vampire, this amount of it is definitely a significant increase and almost certainly promises  chainsaw-related gore in your near future.

It is as thrilling as it is terrifying.

You’re broken from your lustful stare by Dave walking past you, up to the fridge and kneeling beside it, hand placed along one of the rusty chains keeping the door closed.

“Dave, don’t get too close, who knows where that thing has been?” He looks up at you and nods before shuffling even closer on his knee. Your eyes roll even as you give him a fond, if exasperated grin.

“Like I was saying, this shit again? What is up with this fridge and its magical teleportation abilities? It’s the goddamn TARDIS up in here.”

You hear a snicker from John, at his place just slightly behind you and to the right, before he exclaims “Wibbly wobbly, Fridgey widgey, am I right Dave?” Your ecto-brother just shakes his head before leaning over the door of the fridge and plucking something off of it.

He inspects the object for a second before holding it up towards Jane.

“Hey, did this thing always have this magnet on it?”

The magnet in question is shaped like the Breath symbol currently adorning John’s shirt. You see Jane’s brows furrow as she haltingly says, “I don’t think so? Although it has been quite some time since I’ve seen my fridge, I...don’t recall it being there.” She finishes cautiously.

Dave brings it back up to his face for a closer look, though you doubt with his shades on if the image is really any clearer for him. “Yeah, I didn’t think so,” he shrugs and pockets the magnet as he stands back up. He looks at you.

“Rose? Your Seer-sense tingling?” You merely shrug in response. Your Seer abilities haven’t been functional on this new Victory planet since you miraculously respawned here. Neither have Terezi’s, though you know that everyone else’s In-Game abilities remained with them and have been operating as expected.

Your bad fortune has been irritating and baffling.

“This is as perplexing to me as it is to you. No Seer shit happening on my end, dear brother.”

“Terezi?” Karkat looks expectantly at her.

She shakes her head, “No Karkles, unfortunately my well of information seems to be just as dried up as Rose’s.”

“Let’s just fucking chuck the thing and be done with it already. Sollux, take care of it, will ya?”

The yellowblood scoffs indignantly at Vriska’s orders. “Like fuck, am I going anywhere near that thing.” He shuffles around a bit, seemingly repulsed by the idea.

“Besides, where, uh, where would we even put it?” Tavros says this quietly enough you doubt he is actually expecting an answer, though Miss Serket seems content enough to provide him with one.

“Uh, the fucking ocean? Duh!”

“We’re not putting anyfin in the ocean, Fishka.” Feferi cuts that line of thought off right at conception.

Eridan’s eyes widen incredulously. “Yeah, let alone a fridge-coffin that has a coddamn dead body inside.”

Feferi and Eridan have both been adamant about preserving the clean and pristine conditions of this planet’s bodies of water. Something about “not letting any land dwellers ruin this planet’s oceans, too.” To be fair, none of you could offer much in the way of defense for how your combined species had decimated and polluted the water on your respective planets, so their concern has been justified, and you’ve all tried your best to maintain the untouched nature of this planet’s water sources.

“Should we even get rid of it?”

The chatter that had heretofore risen from your sudden discovery immediately dissipates, letting John’s question linger in the silence.

Roxy speaks up, breaking the tension “Like, what do you think we should do with it, Johnny-boy?”

John huffs as he crosses his arms, looking earnestly at the entire populace of this planet, gathered as you are around the fridge. His eyes linger on yours, he meets your gaze nervously and you raise an eyebrow hoping to prompt him to come right out with whatever his idea is. He lets out a groan as he breaks eye contact and scratches the back of his neck as he shuffles his stance a bit.

“I don’t know. But I mean, it’s, like, super weird that this just popped up here, right? There has to be a reason for it. It’s not like the fridge just grew legs and walked here.” He looks confused and slightly worried by the implication as he glances around your group of friends again.

“Egbert’s right. It didn’t just fucking come here on its own volition. Someone had to have brought it here,” Karkat’s as-of-yet unbroken gaze on the fridge turns steely, “we just need to figure out who it was and why the fuck they did it.”

“Isn’t that why we have Seers?”

You level Sollux with an icy look, though you concede a nod. “Perhaps, but isn’t the reason we have a Mage of Doom so you can detect the doom that is to befall us? Or does a fridge containing the body of a maniacal serial killer clown not count as Doom?”

“Hey, that is not how it works, and you fucking well know it, Lalonde.” He steps forwards with a critical finger aimed at your face.

“Do I?”

“Hey, assholes! Can we please turn our attention back to the ominous fucking harbringer of doom that is the thermal hull/coffin mysteriously residing in the middle of our goddamn city?” The number of hand gestures Karkat uses is quite amusing to watch, if slightly dangerous for the people gathered closest to him, who are certainly at risk of getting backhanded as he gesticulates.

“Technically Karkat, a city would require quite a considerably larger number of people than we currently possess. We could at most be considered a village or a small town.”

“Not the time for a geography lesson, Kanaya.”

This is a common discussion among your group, whether you call it a city or not. And your lovely matesprit has taken a decidedly negative standpoint on the matter. It is also one of the many discussions that still gets Karkat’s blood boiling.

Your wife shoots you an amused look. However close they are with one another, she does love to rile him up now and again.

Dave sighs and fishes the magnet back out of his pocket, looking at it consideringly.

“I think this is important guys. Like maybe it’s a clue about who left it here? Like what if it was a Breath player?”

The group collectively turns to look at John and Tavros, who happen to be standing next to one another. They look at each other, having some sort of silent conversation, before John speaks up.

“Hey, it wasn’t us, don’t just assume!”

You step forward, “Are you sure, John? Neither of you went on a journey through Paradox Space looking for this?” Your question is mostly sarcastic, neither of them are foolish enough to go on a journey through the vestiges of Paradox Space, let alone to then forget about it.

He shakes his head and crosses his arms in front of his chest defensively, “No Rose, we didn’t. I have literally no idea why that magnet has a Breath symbol on it, or how the fridge even got here.”

 Tavros nods along.

He gives you a confused look, “Besides, how would we, uh, even know where to find it, if we did want to go on that kind of trip? Neither of us are, uh, Space players, so we can’t just, know where something is. Intuitively, I mean.” You give Tavros an appraising look. He revealed to you some months ago that he found that look, and to some degree you yourself, vaguely intimidating. You are certainly using that to your advantage now.

“Is that so?” You take a step closer.

He lets out a little ‘eep’ and scrambles back a step.

You stay where you are and let your gaze do all the work for you.

You allow him a moment of silence before prompting him with a small, prodding head tilt.

He swallows and nods, “Yes, that is so. I really don’t know how that thing ended up here. And I’m fairly, um, confident that John doesn’t either.”

You look at him a second longer before nodding and casually moving back to your original position.

“Yes, I figured as much.”

You look back to John, “Is there any way this could be a consequence of your Retcon abilities? Perhaps a future you went on a trip through Paradox Space and left this on our doorstep utilizing those powers?”

John looks like he wants to disagree, but admits “It’s possible, I guess. But why would future me want to do that?”

You nod as you consider your options. There aren’t very many.

“Perhaps we can agree that that is the most likely scenario for now, and Terezi and I can attempt to look into it later?”

John shrugs and nods, and his agreement mixes with the general nods and words of assent from the rest of the gathered group.

You lock eyes with Karkat.

“Of course, now there remains the question of what to do with it?”

Karkat glances sideways for a moment before leveling you with a question. “Well, is there even anything in it, anymore? It could be fucking empty for all we know, and Future John was just returning a fridge he thought we could use.”

“Nope, there’s something super dead in there, alright.” Aradia exclaims with a wide grin, reveling in her morbidity as always. It’s sort of refreshing in a way, a voice to help keep everyone level headed and remind you all of the brevity of mortality. It has been getting too chummy around here.

Of course, now that you’re all immortal, she doesn’t get the opportunity very often, so in a way you’re happy for her.

You’re all quiet for a moment as you consider the implications of what she’s just confirmed.

“Oh goddamnit. Okay that’s it, Dirk, can I have your sword? I left mine in my house.” Dirk silently passes over his katana without question.

Dave takes it and looks at it appraisingly, probably determining the reliability of the sword and its ability to get the job done.

You can see him psyching himself up, nodding to himself and staring hard at the fridge.

“Dave, you don’t have to do this. We can figure it out another way.” You offer him a way out, a path of approach that may be significantly less damaging to the psyche, should he, or any of you really, see a rotting corpse inside the container.

He shakes his head, “Nah, Rose, we gotta know, so I’m popping the lid off like a goddamn crisp cola.” He points the tip of the sword at one of the locks adorning the fridge.

“Alright you juggalo freak, here I fucking come.”

He jams it hard into the mechanism of the lock and it dents, the chains it had been connecting coming loose. He jams it into the second lock remaining with just as much force and the chains finally give way, falling in a heap on the ground beside the object they had been restraining.

You can feel the tension among your peers as you all watch with bated breath as Dave uses the tip of the sword to flip the lid over, like one would with a stick and a dead animal.

“HOLY PUMPKIN-SHITTING FUCK!” Dave reels back, landing on his rear as he hastily brings his shirt up to cover his nose.

You hurriedly follow suit.

You hear Terezi dart in a blur behind a tree several feet away from you all, as she gasps and gags in turn.

The experience is, in a word, almost unbearable.

The stench had erupted immediately upon Dave flipping over the lid, as if the smell was so terrible it couldn’t get away from itself fast enough. You’ve smelled death before, but not like this. This is the smell of a body that has been rotting for several months, with little in the way of ventilation. This body has been ruminating in its own juices for longer than that.

If you had to describe it, you would say it is similar to the smell of gasoline intensified by one thousand percent mixed with flaming dog feces and a sort of yeasty smell you assume is from the bacteria undoubtedly proliferating on the corpse.

A moment after the smell hits you, muffled screaming fills the air.

It’s Karkat.

He has his arm covering his nose and mouth, though it does nothing to really block the sound of his horrified screams from piercing the air. Pale red tears are streaming down his face, soaking into the sleeve of his shirt and he can’t seem to tear his horror-stricken eyes away from the grisly image of his old friend’s decomposing body.

Everyone stays fixated on the macabre image in front of them.

Screams and gasps and panicked breathing ring out in the deadly still air.

The lid slams closed and you catch a glimpse of Dirk’s foot as it retracts.

Quick thinking, Dirk.

Even after it’s closed, you can’t shake the image from your mind and you stare dumbly at the “coffin”.

Luckily Karkat’s screams have stopped, though it’s replaced by sobs and broken mutterings muted by Kanaya’s cloak. She’s crushing him close to her chest, and you have a feeling, from the way her own eyes are scrunched shut, that he’s not the only one in need of comfort.

As much as she hated Gamzee, you know it must be disturbing to see the rotting body of someone who was once your friend.

You had hardly known Gamzee and yet you’re desperately trying to reign in the shock your body is currently experiencing.

You feel like you’re grasping at the tethers of your composure that seem to be slipping through your fingers like sand in an hourglass.

You know you’re not the only one, either.

Although you can’t quite seem to redirect your gaze anywhere but the appliance in front of you, you hear the halted breaths, shocked gasps, and stifled sobs from all of those around you.

You can even hear Vriska’s carefully steady breathing from beside you. You know she was affected by that, even if she tries to force herself not to be.

After a few minutes of processing, the air seems to be able to move again, and Dave quietly says, “Okay, not ever doing that again. Bad fucking idea Strider. That was so not cash money of me.” He’s trying to seem blaise but you can tell by how all the blood seems to have left his face that he was certainly not as unaffected as he wants to seem.

A beat of silence.

“That’s all you havve to say? Wwe just fuckin’ saw the rotted up, wworm-ridden corpse ‘a our wrigglerhood friend. An’ all you havve to say is ‘my bad’?” Eridan’s wavy accent is exceptionally apparent right now, belying his own horror with the experience you’ve all just had.

“Well, what the fuck do you want me to say, dude? I messed up, I admitted it. I can’t change the fucking past, I can’t erase the memory from your minds or some shit.”

No one mentions that technically, changing the past is absolutely within the realm of his capabilities.

Sollux charges forward, jabbing a finger at Dave’s chest, “How about, oh I don’t know, “sorry”? ‘Sorry guys for fucking traumatizing you more than you already fucking were before.’ Or how about the fact that we all should have agreed on it before you decided to just fucking open it!?”

Karkat wiggles out of Kanaya’s embrace and gently pushes Sollux back from his matesprit.

“Hey man, it’s not like it was sudden. We had ample time to fucking protest. And we probably should have.” He’s speaking quietly for once, somber, and not looking at anyone, staring determinedly down at the ground. “We really fucking should have.” He mutters this to himself, breath hitching, as he scrunches his eyes closed. Whether he is trying to prevent more tears from escaping, or attempting to scrub the gruesome image from his mind, is really anyone’s guess.

Tavros shuffles in his spot on the right side of the fridge beside John. “Um, are you...okay, Karkat? I had my eyes covered, because I was, um, scared, so I didn’t really see anything, which is, uh, lucky I guess. Though it had less to do with luck, and more to do with, uh, my preparation?”

Karkat’s eyes snap open and he levels the Page a blank, disbelieving stare from across the way.

“Why don’t you ask me that the next time I see my ex-moirail’s shrivelled up, maggot-infested, cut-in-goddamn-half, corpse, nookwipe?”

“Oh, uh right. Sorry.”

You hear someone scoff, though you can’t pinpoint the source.

You take a deep breath, close your eyes hard, and release the air in a sigh.

“Recent experiences aside, we do still need to figure out what to do with the body.”

Everyone falls silent at that.

Then…

“Maybe we should just fucking toss it. I mean like, that whole thing sucked right? I’m definitely not taking the risk of it accidentally falling out of there. And there aren’t any more chains to tie it shut with, so...yeah. Let’s just chuck it and be done with it.”

Karkat levels Dave an offended look.

“Hey, asshole, we should at least fucking bury the thing. I mean, I’m not sure about you humans, but desecrating dead bodies on Alternia is how you fucking get ghosts. Or daywalkers.” You hear muttered assent from the trolls.

“Yeah! It would definitely be bad if this corpse came back and started walking around. Not much fun to be had at a corpse party when you’re the only corpse, and you’re only half a person, so you can’t really walk anywhere. That would probably be very painful.” Aradia says this with an odd level of concern, like she feels bad for the Gamzee zombie she just imagined.

Everyone grimaces.

Tavros looks disgusted, but pats Aradia comfortingly, if hesitantly, on the back, “Yeah, um, that would definitely be less than an ideal situation for, pretty much everyone. So we should probably, just bury him?”

Terezi rejoins the group, still looking decidedly green in the face, “Seconded,” she raises a hand.

Jake nods and steps forward, “Yes, that would certainly be the gentlemanly thing to do. But if that’s to be our course of action chaps, where shall we put the old thing?”

Jane looks momentarily confused, “How old was he? When the clown came to hang around me he was probably no older than, say, 16?”

Jake levels a blank look at her, “I was talking about the fridge, Janey. And I didn’t mean literally old, just a figure of speech.”

Her face flushes pink with anger and embarrassment.

“Yes, Jake, I am aware, I was just asking for curiosity’s sake.”

“Then why did you-”

Roxy paps a hand across both of their mouths and shushes them. Jane levels her an irritated glare and Jake merely looks confused.

Roxy pipes up, “Well? Anyone know how old the dude was?”

Everyone turns to Karkat.

He had been looking at his feet, pretending not to be listening to the conversation. Once he notices everyone staring at him he looks grumpy.

“What? Why would I have any idea how old that fuckass was? Look, it doesn’t really fucking matter now. Let’s just get his corpse away from us as fast as motherfucking possible and get back to the rest of our shitty, inconsequential, and immortal lives.” He gestures vaguely towards the fridge as he gives Sollux an expectant look.

The yellowblood stares blankly back at him.

Karkat frowns and gestures with more force towards the fridge.

Sollux continues to look unhurriedly back at him.

Karkat scowls at him.

Sollux quirks an eyebrow, “Yes, KK? Is there something I can help you with?”

Karkat’s irritated scowl becomes a glower of pure rage.

“What the fuck do you mean ‘Is there something I can help you with?’ You goddamn know I’m asking you to pick the fucking thing up so we can get rid of it, you absolute shitstain of a troll.”

Sollux frowns in distaste.

“Why the fuck would I pick it up? It’s not like we’ve got a goddamned hole to stick it in right now, do we? And I’m sure as shit not just going to lug it around all day until you fuckers manage to dig one.”

Karkat scrubs a hand down his face frustratedly, before sighing in exasperation.

“Will you at least help when we finally do have a place to bury him?” Sollux gives him a toothy smile.

“Sure, no problem, KK.”

Your wonderfully peaceful and agreeable leader buries his face in his hands as he takes a deep breath and mutters a slightly-muffled “Fucking fantastic. Thank you for being so goddamn magnanimous.”

John chuckles and doesn’t bother to disguise his glee as he gets a rude gesture in return.

You look around your group, assessing whether now would be a good time to tackle the clown problem. It is still morning, but you only have a couple hours before it’s going to start getting hot, and truthfully you would rather not have the question of ‘what a clown-troll corpse smells like in the middle of summer heat’ answered. You do tend to search for multitudinous opportunities to increase your knowledge, but you think you will be better off overall if you hold out on that particular experience.

You say as much to your cohorts.

Dave nods in agreement before jerking his head up to Equius in question. “Yo, horse dude, you wanna dig a pit with me?”

Equius sighs like he knew that question was coming.

He does hate to get dirty, for all that his moirail seems to thrive in filth and gore.

“Certainly, though I do believe we will be requiring more assistance than just you and myself.”

Nepeta jumps up in excitement, “Oh, I’ll help mew Equihiss! I’m really good at digging, mew know. Plus, I love dirt!” She leaps onto his back and scurries up him, reminiscent of climbing a tree, before tightly locking her arms around his forehead, holding onto his horns for purchase.

“I’ll help too! I like to dig, plus I kind of want the dead body in the middle of our village gone as soon as possible. You know, before it starts getting too hot, like Rose said.” Jade throws a helpful smile to Equius and Nepeta

When no other volunteers come forth after her, you start to worry that you may have to offer your assistance. For all that you thrive off the dark and macabre, you really don’t have any particular desire to roll around in the mud today. Your eyeliner looks truly flawless and you don’t want sweat from digging a grave messing it up.

“Yeah okay, Eridan, Jake, and John. You guys are helping out too.” Karkat speaks over the complaints and protests with such ease it’s like he didn’t even notice the vitriolic death threats being hurled his way. “We need to get this whole thing figured out sooner rather than later. I mean, most of you know what Gamzee smelt like when he was alive, and now we all know what he smells like as a super fucking dead corpse. Do we really want to find out how he smells when heat is applied to both those things?” Everyone remains silent, though the grimacing faces speak loud enough.

“Yeah, that’s what I fucking thought.”

He looks around at the vaguely pissed off and grossed-out faces of the friends he just forced into helping and rolls his eyes.

“I’ll fucking be suffering right there with you, too. So don’t act like I’m being a douchebag that expects something from you that I wouldn’t hold myself to.” He looks at Eridan who had hurled a particularly descriptive and scathing insult at him previously, and Karkat narrows his eyes. “By the fucking way, I heard what you said, you dick. And just for that, you get the privilege of throwing his body in the pit once it’s finished.”

Eridan scoffs indignantly and a series of clicks and growls, which you have determined to be Alternian, follows. You watch in amusement as all the trolls’ eyebrows raise almost synchronously.

You wish you understood any of what he said, especially when you see Karkat’s face shift from angry to affronted to horrified.

“You know what? Fuck you, fishdick. Don’t talk shit about my lusus.” He turns away from the fishy scarf man and looks at Jake. “English, can you go grab like a shitton of shovels so we can get to digging? We’ve got like two and a half hours tops before the sun’s going to be at full fucking force.”

Jake nods and says “Sure thing, good sir,” before turning and heading towards the shed.

Karkat looks around at you all, “So, anyone know any good spots to bury a body? Preferably outside of town?”

“About a mile outside of town, before you reach the river. There aren’t very many rocks and the terrain is fairly clear, so it should be relatively easy to dig into.” Kanaya offers placidly.

It comes across so offhanded and nonchalant one might think she was merely discussing the weather rather than a good burial site for her former friend.

You adore  her.

Jade nods, “Yeah, and it’s not too far out so if anyone wanted to visit, it wouldn’t be too hard of a walk.”

A heavy silence falls across you all at that.

You really don’t think anyone is going to go visit.

Gamzee apparently burned all his bridges far before the final showdown with Caliborn. No one protested when Dirk sliced him in half, and as far as you know, no one has mourned his death.

You’re fairly certain the only reason for his burial is because of how superstitious trolls are. There are no ulterior motives as far as you’re aware.

Someone coughs awkwardly.

Karkat looks to the side, and reluctantly agrees, “Right.” Dave puts a hand on his shoulder that you see Karkat lean into.

Interesting.

Your train of thought gets derailed when the sound of clanging metal and footfalls grows in volume. You turn to the side and spot Jake jogging back over to you all, six or seven shovels in hand, and looking as unaffected as he would if he were walking.

Goddamn explorer’s endurance. Or whatever it was he calls it.

He slows as he approaches and offers a wide, breezy grin.

“Here you go, lads. These were all the ones in the shed. Though I do suppose I could have checked in the gardens… No matter! I figure these should do us well enough.”

He holds the shovels slightly forward, offering them out to the general audience gathered around.

Dave grabs one for him and one for Karkat first. Equius and Nepeta each reach for one next, and so it goes until Eridan is the only volunteer without a shovel. It seems there were seven after all and there aren’t enough for him to have one.

He smiles, pleased at his good fortune, before turning to Karkat with a smug look on his face, “Whale, sorry Kar. I’ll have to dig a fuckin’ hole some other day.”

Karkat grins deviously, “Oh, don’t worry about it, Eridan. Like I said, you’ll still be helping out with the body.”

The violet hue fades from Eridan’s face at the same time his smug grin abruptly drops.

“Hey, Kar, that was a fuckin’ joke right? You wouldn’t actually make me touch Gam’s dead body. I mean, that’s fuckin’ disgustin’. And pretty fucked up, if I might add.”

Karkat doesn’t respond, simply hefting his shovel over his shoulder and following your beautiful, vampire wife to the spot she was talking about.

“Kar?”

The grave-diggers’ backs become smaller and smaller as they continue on their way, completely ignorant of Eridan’s pleading.

“Kar!”

He finally looks away from Karkat’s fading back, and looks at Roxy pleadingly, “Rox, please don’t make me fuckin’ do that. I wwill actually, literally barf.”

His moirail simply shakes her head and pats his shoulder reassuringly, before sighing and heading off in the direction everyone else went.

Eridan looks at her retreating form in distress, before a hand claps down hard on his shoulder.

“Ehehehe, Eridan, you really should’ve kept your trap shut. If you hadn’t said anything, they still wouldn’t have had enough shovels but you could have avoided being placed on the corpse-removal detail.”

Terezi’s wicked grin could cut glass. She thrives on the mild inconveniences and suffering anyone in your group faces, though she seems to have a craving for the bad luck of a particular few more than others. Eridan is one of the unlucky ones.

He hangs his head and huffs a sigh, “Yeah, I know.”

She cackles and licks up the side of his face before bolting across the field and out of the gate entrance to your town.

You look at your kismesis and consider whether anything you do now could lower his spirits as well as what Terezi just did.

You think you’ll just let him sit with it.

The Terezi spit smearing his face, you mean.

“Come on.” You don’t glance back at him as you start your trek out of town.

There’s a clown to bury, after all.

Notes:

This is my novel-length fix-it fic for Gamzee Makara. This work operates under the theory that Lord English through Lil Cal, influenced Gamzee's mind and maintained partial control over him throughout Sgrub all in order to fulfill the timeline's, and by extension Lord English', needs. Gamzee Makara was always destined to be a puppet of Lord English because if he is not, the timeline is doomed. In this universe, the kids manage to win and extricate themselves the prize of a planet of their own that operates outside of the influence of the Game, and therefore outside of Lord English's influence. So the question I wanted to explore with this work is, without Lord English, who is Gamzee Makara?
Again, I do write this with the opinion that Gamzee was partially and at times fully possessed by Lil Cal, and that can be a controversial theory for some readers. If you are one of those readers, this fic is likely not for you. Read at your own discretion.
