Everything is not always as it seems

Summary:

Hobbits are a peculiar thing to most races as they very rarely leave their homes, but what happens when a wizard and 13 dwarves show up and throw Bilbo's entire live upside down? What is Bilbo to do when Thorin unknowingly creates a soul bond between them and ends up dragging three other members into the mess as well? How will he keep his secrets when he now has four people connected to his soul? In the end, all Bilbo needs to remember is his mother's words, "everything is not always as it seems."

Chapter 1: Preface

Chapter Text

Long before our story began a couple of hobbits decided to see what was out in the big world around them that many of their kin had never dared to go into. They met many people they would have never known about during their travels, but no matter who they met or where they went they always had each other. The Boggines continued to travel until they found the perfect hole in the ground, not yet home, that they could build into the perfect hobbit hole to grow a family in.

After a few years, their love finally came into the world in the form of a beautiful hobbit babe. It was in the hobbit hole the two had built that they raised that hobbit babe, where she said her first words, took their first steps, and even their first friendships once they grew older. As they grew many would comment on what a beautiful woman they were becoming, despite the fact that the fraze never sat quite right with the little one.

Years later, when the little one was not so little anymore, a sickness swept through the town where the hobbit family lived. It took indiscriminately and viciously, especially when it came to the small hobbit family in the hole in the ground. Before sickness left the town it took close to half of the older population including the two hobbits that loved each other that leave behind the product of their love to fend for themselves. With nothing else tying them to the town, instead of wallowing in sadness the little hobbit decided to cut all their hair and collect home things from their home to help them in the world. When they finally stepped out into the world a handsome young man.

The next place our story takes us is past the Misty Mountains where another hobbit family is packing up in hopes of a simpler life in the town where Belladonna grew up, Hottiton. The Baggins headed out on their journey with their son Benno dreaming of a hobbit hole surrounded by rolling hills. Benno had never met any of his mother's family and the Tooks and Baggins had only heard of him in the letters Bella would send home, and his mother was very excited to be with her family again and to have her son grow in the same fields where she did.

During a long journey, death is something many people know but hope never happens to them. Unfortunately, death did not pass over the Baggins as Bella lays her husband and son next to each other in a shallow grave after a sickness took both of them far sooner than their time. Knowing she could not delay the rest of her travels she took her grief in stride knowing she could deal with it once she was in her new home. It was during her travels that she stumbled upon a young hobbit boy starving and without a home. Bella takes the young hobbit under her arm as she listens to his story of how he came to wander in the wilderness. After hearing his story Bella decided that this young hobbit would be raised as her own and continued her journey to Hobbiton.

When the pair arrived in the Shire Bella greeted her family not with her husband by her side but a son. She told her family that her same preferred a different name which no one questioned, and if they did no one questioned Belladonna about it, and so Bella and Bilbo Baggins moved into Bag End. Bella told Bilbo that his secrets will forever be safe with her but to never let anyone else find out, so Bilbo kept his secret and grew up happy and free into the hobbit Bella was proud of.
