Chapter Text
It had been an arduous and challenging few weeks for the Wayne family. Living in a cramped apartment nestled amidst Gotham City's towering buildings that seemed to claw at the sky was never an easy endeavor. The city's perpetual darkness seemed to seep into every crack and crevice, casting a shadow on their lives.
The streets below were a chaotic symphony of blaring horns, screeching tires, and hurried footsteps, the ceaseless rhythm of a metropolis that never slept. The air carried a heavy mixture of pollution and the scent of desperation, the latter emanating from those like the Waynes who found themselves entangled in the web of urban struggle.
Within this concrete jungle, where opulence and corruption danced a dangerous tango, the family clung to their modest existence, determined to survive against all odds. But recently, circumstances had taken a turn for the worse, pushing them deeper into the clutches of a city that cared little for their plight.
The weight of their financial stress pressed heavily upon them, forcing Bruce and Dick to juggle two demanding jobs each just to make ends meet. Their schedules were grueling, leaving little room for respite or even a fleeting moment of connection with the younger family members.
Within the walls of their modest apartment, the evidence of their meager existence was palpable. The faded wallpaper peeled at the corners, revealing the layers of history that had been painted over time and time again.
The creaking floorboards echoed the age and wear of the building, a constant reminder of its fragile state. The furniture, worn and mismatched, bore the marks of countless years of use, each piece telling a story of hardship and resilience.
The sparse shelves held only the essentials, their empty spaces emphasizing the scarcity of their possessions. The presence of their financial constraints seemed to fill every nook and cranny, as if the very walls of their home whispered tales of a life spent scraping by. It was a place that offered shelter but provided little solace, a stark reflection of the family's economic reality.
Yet, despite the dilapidated surroundings, the love that bound the Wayne family together shone through, a glimmer of hope amidst the dimness, their bond the foundation upon which they weathered the storms of life.
The once tight-knit family found themselves engulfed in a sea of responsibilities and obligations, their lives interlaced with work shifts that devoured their waking hours. Exhaustion and sacrifice became their constant companions, leaving Bruce and Dick yearning for a semblance of normalcy and the chance to be present in the lives of Jason, Tim, and Damian.
As the days blurred into nights, their shared moments became fleeting glimpses of hurried goodbyes in the early morning hours, barely having time to exchange weary smiles or utter a few words of encouragement before parting ways once again.
In the blink of an eye, Damian fell ill. It started with a persistent cough and a slight sniffle, leading Bruce and the rest of the family to believe it was just a common cold. They treated him at home with over-the-counter medication, hoping it would pass quickly. Damian, always resilient, initially brushed it off with his usual stubborn nature.
But as the days went by, Damian's condition took a turn for the worse. His once vibrant energy and playful spirit began to fade, replaced by a relentless onslaught of symptoms. The cough grew deeper and more persistent, accompanied by a high fever that sent waves of heat through his small body.
His weakened state became evident when he struggled to carry out simple tasks. Walking from his bed to the living room left him breathless, his chest heaving with each step. Even his sharp wit and quick reflexes dulled, and he found it difficult to concentrate or engage in his usual banter with his brothers.
Mealtimes became a struggle as Damian's appetite diminished, and the little food he managed to consume would often be quickly expelled due to severe nausea. His weight began to drop, his clothes hanging loosely on his frame. The once lively and mischievous boy now seemed fragile, his face pale and eyes sunken.
Bruce watched his son with growing concern, his worry etched on his face.
"Hey buddy, how are you feeling today?" he asked softly, sitting on the edge of his bed that Damian had taken temporary residence in. In spite of his illness, Damian summoned a look of unwavering determination, but his eyes revealed the pain he was trying to hide. "I'm fine, just a little tired," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper.
The nights were especially difficult. Damian's fever soared, causing him to toss and turn in restless agony. Bruce and Dick took turns staying by his side, soothing him with cool compresses and gentle words of comfort.
"What's wrong with Damian?" Tim asks, his voice filled with worry, as he emerged from the dark hallway. His hands were fisted in his nightshirt, his usually tidy appearance reflecting the chaos that has consumed their lives.
The sudden presence startles the father and son, jolting them awake from their chairs at Damian's bedside. In the commotion, the cool bowl of water resting on Dick's lap tumbles to the floor, splashing onto the stained, rough carpet.
“Oh shit.” Dick lets out a string of hushed curses as he scrambles to floor to soak up the excess water with a spare rag, inadvertently stirring Damian from his uneasy slumber.
Suddenly, the room is filled with a frenzy of emotions, as Damian's heartbreakingly soft cries intermix with Dick's string of curses, Bruce's words of comfort, and Tim's worried questioning.
Bruce's response is brief and deliberately vague, "Damian's just having trouble sleeping, that's all," he says, keeping the explanation simple to avoid worrying Tim.
"Why don't you go back to bed, Tim. You have school tomorrow," Bruce suggests, rising from his chair with his knees cracking from days of misuse. "Come on, I'll walk you to your room."
As they walk down the hallway, Tim remains glued to Bruce's side, a silent testament to his concern for his younger brother. When they reach the shared room where Jason’s sleeping, Bruce gently tucks Tim into bed.
In the enveloping darkness, Tim's voice quivers with emotion, breaking the stillness, "Damian’s going to be okay, right?" Despite the absence of light, Bruce discerns the tearful tremor in Tim's voice, knowing the weight of his worry.
“Yeah, Damian’s gonna be fine, you’re brother and I are going to make sure of it, don’t worry. Now get some sleep.” He says, his own voice cracking with conviction.
While returning to Damian's side, Bruce allows his mind to briefly wander. ‘What if Damian didn't show signs of improvement? What if this illness stole away his youngest son?’ However, he quickly catches himself, refusing to succumb to such negative thoughts. He shakes his head, physically halting those pessimistic notions.
But as the nights wore on, a deepening sense of helplessness settled upon the family, their hearts heavy with each passing moment. Damian's condition showed no signs of improvement; instead, it mercilessly continued to deteriorate. It was as if a dark cloud had descended upon their once lively household, casting a shadow over their every thought and action.
The effects of Damian's illness reverberated through their lives, creating a ripple of worry and concern that touched every family member.
Bruce, burdened with the weight of responsibility, found his sleep haunted by restless nights and plagued by anxious thoughts. The lines on his face deepened as he grappled with the relentless fear of losing his youngest son, a fear that threatened to consume him.
Dick, normally the beacon of strength, showed cracks in his façade as sleep deprivation took its toll. Exhausted from working multiple jobs, his fatigue mingled with an undercurrent of guilt, blaming himself for not being able to provide better for Damian. The constant juggling act between work and family became an overwhelming struggle, leaving him drained and emotionally worn.
Jason, known for his tough exterior, couldn't help but feel a pang of vulnerability every time he saw Damian's weakened state. He tried to bury his concern beneath layers of sarcasm and jokes, but the worry etched itself into the corners of his eyes, revealing his true feelings.
Tim, usually the voice of reason, found himself lost in a whirlwind of anxiety. His normally sharp mind became clouded by thoughts of what could happen to Damian, consumed by an incessant need to find a solution. Sleep eluded him as he tirelessly researched and sought answers, desperate to help his younger brother.
Bruce let out a weary sigh as he slumped into a chair, exhaustion etched on his face. Dick noticed the heaviness in his Dad’s demeanor and approached him with a concerned look.
"Dad, we can't keep hoping this will just go away. Damian's getting worse. We need to do something." Dick's voice faltered, laced with unmistakable anxiety.
“You don’t think I know that, Dick. I've been thinking about it too. Maybe it's time we consider taking him to the hospital. I can pick up another job, or take out a loan.”
Bruce rubbed his tired eyes, the weight of the situation pressing upon him. His mind raced with thoughts of Damian's deteriorating health and the mounting medical expenses.
Desperation mingled with determination as he contemplated the difficult decision ahead. Deep down, Bruce knew that turning to loan sharks for money was a dangerous path to tread. The stories of their ruthless tactics and exorbitant interest rates echoed in his mind. Yet, the thought of his precious son suffering due to their financial struggles was unbearable.
Sighing heavily, Bruce acknowledged the harsh reality they faced. The bills were piling up, and their meager income simply couldn't keep up with the rising costs. As he considered the possibility of taking out a loan, he couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt.
The idea of plunging their family into further debt weighed heavily on his conscience. He knew the risks involved, both for their financial stability and their safety.
But in the end, his fatherly instincts compelled him to explore every possible avenue to provide the best care for Damian.
“I’m going to go out for a little while. Watch Damian, while you?” Bruce asks of Dick, avoiding his son’s questions of ‘where?’
With a heavy heart, Bruce makes his way out of the apartment, determined to find a solution. Bruce mustered the strength to step out of the apartment, into the dimly lit hallway. The once vibrant walls were now marred with chipped paint, exposing the worn-out plaster underneath. The flickering overhead light cast eerie shadows, adding to the gloomy atmosphere. The air felt stagnant and heavy, carrying the scent of mildew and neglect.
As Bruce made his way down the staircase, the steps creaked beneath his weight, a testament to the building's age and lack of maintenance. The frigid air seeped through the cracks, penetrating his clothing and causing a shiver to run down his spine.
He pulled his worn jacket tighter around himself, the fabric thin and threadbare from years of use. It offered little protection against the biting cold that enveloped the neighborhood.
Outside, the scene was no less grim. The streets, lined with dilapidated buildings and littered with debris, painted a picture of neglect and hardship. Puddles of murky water dotted the uneven pavement, reflecting the dim glow of streetlights.
The wind howled through the narrow alleyways, sending a chill that cut through Bruce's tired bones. He braced himself against the harsh elements, determination fueling his every step. As he rounded the apartment building, he encountered Alfred, the kind-hearted owner of the bodega downstairs.
Alfred had always been there for Bruce, offering wise advice and acting as a surrogate father figure when needed.
Bruce pushed open the worn-out door to the bodega, its hinges creaking in protest. The chilly breeze swept into the dimly lit space, causing Bruce to shiver involuntarily. The old wooden floors beneath his worn-out shoes creaked under his weight, echoing through the almost-empty store.
As he stepped inside, the soft jingle of the bell hanging above the entrance filled the air, announcing his presence. Alfred, standing behind the counter, turned his attention away from arranging shelves, his eyes lighting up with genuine warmth as he caught sight of Bruce.
The bodega was a modest establishment, its shelves filled with basic necessities and simple provisions. The dim fluorescent lights cast a gentle glow, illuminating the worn-out linoleum floors and faded posters on the walls. The place had an air of familiarity and comfort, a haven for the locals seeking a friendly face or a quick purchase.
Alfred's warm smile spread across his face as he approached the counter, his hands wiping off the invisible dust of his work. The wrinkles at the corners of his eyes deepened, evidence of the wisdom he had gained over the years.
"Bruce, my boy," Alfred greeted him, his voice carrying a hint of concern. "You look like you've been carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. What brings you here today?"
Bruce met Alfred's gaze, the weariness etched in his face evident. He felt a sense of relief wash over him, knowing that Alfred's presence provided solace and guidance in times of turmoil. The bodega, a sanctuary in the midst of their struggles, was a place where Bruce found temporary respite from the harsh realities of life.
Bruce approached the counter, his voice filled with a mixture of weariness and determination. "Alfred, I... I need your advice. With Damian getting worse we’re gonna take him to the hospital, but I… don’t have health insurance, I've even considered going to loan sharks for the money." His voice trailed off, the weight of his words hanging in the air, laced with a hint of shame for even considering such desperate measures.
Alfred's expression softened, and he placed a gentle hand on Bruce's shoulder.
"My dear boy, I understand your worries, but I believe there may be another solution," Alfred offered gently, his voice filled with compassion. "Have you ever heard of the free clinic not far from here? It's a place that provides medical care to families who can't afford it."
Bruce's eyes widened, a glimmer of hope flickering within them. "A free clinic?" he repeated, a mix of curiosity and disbelief coloring his voice. "I didn't know such a place existed. Are they trustworthy? Will they be able to help Damian?"
Alfred nodded reassuringly. "Yes, Bruce, they are trustworthy. Many families in our community have received essential medical care from them when they had no other options. They have dedicated healthcare professionals who volunteer their services, and they genuinely care about their patients' well-being."
Bruce's shoulders visibly relaxed as a sense of relief washed over him. The idea of a free clinic, a lifeline for families in need, seemed like a ray of light in their dark circumstances.
"Thank you, Alfred," Bruce said, gratitude lacing his words. "I hadn't even considered the possibility of a free clinic. This could be the answer we've been searching for."
Alfred placed a comforting hand on Bruce's shoulder, his eyes filled with reassurance. "You're welcome, my boy. Remember, there is always help available when we open ourselves up to seeking it. Let's go together to the free clinic tomorrow and explore the options for Damian's care. You're not alone in this journey.”
With renewed determination, Bruce left the bodega, grateful for the timely intervention of his wise confidant. The path forward seemed less daunting now, as he set his sights on the free clinic, where they might find the medical care Damian desperately required.
Bruce trudged wearily up the dimly lit stairs, his thoughts consumed by the glimmer of hope offered by the free clinic. However he hallway outside his apartment seemed even more darker than usual, its worn carpet bearing the weight of countless struggles and hardships.
Just as he reached his floor, an unusual sound pierced the silence—screaming. Panic gripped his heart, his instincts instantly telling him something was terribly wrong. His hand trembled as he fumbled with the key, the metal slipping from his grasp and clattering to the ground.
"Dick!" Bruce shouted, his voice laced with fear and urgency. "Hold on! I'm coming!"
The agonizing moments stretched as Bruce struggled to retrieve the key, his hands shaking uncontrollably. The cries for help intensified, intermingled with Dick's desperate pleas for assistance.
Each passing second felt like an eternity, amplifying Bruce's anxiety and dread.
Finally, the key found its way back into Bruce's trembling hand, and he managed to unlock the door. He burst into the apartment, his heart pounding in his chest, and sprinted towards Damian's room.
The sight that greeted him shattered his soul. Dick knelt beside Damian's convulsing body, tears streaming down his face. The room felt suffocating, filled with the raw anguish of the moment. Bruce's eyes widened with shock and horror, his voice catching in his throat as he rushed to their side.
"Dick!" he cried out, his voice choked with emotion. "What's happening? Oh god, Damian!” As Damian writhed on the bed, his body contorting with each spasm, guttural sounds escaped his throat.
The scene unfolded before him in a blur, the urgency and helplessness overwhelming. Bruce knelt beside Dick, his hands shaking as he reached out to comfort his youngest son during the seizure. Fear coursed through his veins, mingling with an unwavering determination to do whatever it took to save Damian.
Jason and Tim stood frozen in the doorway, their eyes wide with terror as they witnessed the distressing scene unfolding before them.
A mixture of confusion and fear gripped their hearts, leaving them desperate for answers. Trembling, Jason managed to find his voice first, his words barely a whisper.
"What's happening?" he asked, his voice laced with apprehension.
But the sight of his other two sons only seemed to fuel Bruce's anguish, exacerbating the overwhelming emotions coursing through his veins. In a moment of overwhelming stress, he turned towards them, his voice laced with desperation.
"Quiet!" Bruce's words came out sharp and harsh, cutting through the air with a raw intensity. His eyes, clouded with worry and fear, bore into their souls.
"Just... be quiet. Let me focus on Damian." His words hung heavily in the air, the weight of the situation casting a somber silence over the room.
Jason and Tim exchanged worried glances, their hearts heavy with a mix of confusion, concern, and a deep longing to help. With trembling lips, they obeyed their father's plea, retreating to the corner of the room, their presence a silent testament to the overwhelming sense of helplessness that enveloped them all.
In that heart-wrenching moment, as the weight of the situation bore down on him, Bruce's mind raced with a renewed sense of urgency. The free clinic, the beacon of hope, became more than a lifeline—it became their only chance at saving Damian's life.
