Chapter Text
“What if I mess up? Or I don’t say something right-”
“Dick.”
“-or what if my voice cracks? Or I trip oh god what if I trip-”
“Dick!”
“-and then he doesn’t wanna marry a klutz and the whole wedding’s ruined and it’s all my fault and-“
"Richard!” Jason grabs Dick’s arms at the shoulder and gives him a hard shake. “Chill!”
Dick pauses mid-ramble and shuts his mouth with a click. “Sorry,” he chuckles, reddening, “nervous.”
Jason drops his hands and rolls his eyes. “You’ve wanted this for a decade, it will be perfect no matter what happens.”
“I know, I know , but now it’s here and it’s terrifying.”
“Well good thing you’re one of the bravest men I know.”
“Awww, Jay!” Dick beams at him.
“Yeah, yeah. Now c’mon, gotta get out there for your first look with Wally.”
“I mean. He’s wearing the same thing. Not a huge surprise.”
“Out!” Jason points at the door.
“So bossy. My wedding,” Dick grumbles before smiling, walking over to the door flanked by his best man. He opens it and they step into the hallway, following it down to the ballroom.
“How do I look?”
“Just need to...” Conner reaches forward and slightly adjusts Wally’s bow tie and straightens his boutonnière. “There. Lookin’ sharp.”
“Ok cool. Good,” Wally smiles, turning to check himself out in the mirror.
“I didn’t expect you to be this calm,” Conner admits.
“Knowing Dick he’s freaking out enough for the both of us,” Wally chuckles.
“Point.”
“Guess we should head out for the first look, huh?”
“You’re gonna ugly cry,” Connor laughs.
“Let’s find out!” Wally grins.
Jason grins from in front of Dick when he sees Wally walk backwards into the room, guided by Conner. He stops about ten feet from Dick.
“He’s here?” Dick whispers.
Jason nods.
“No superspeed cheating, Wally!” Jason yells.
Wally raises an arm with a thumbs up.
“Ok Conner and I are outta here. Have fun.”
“Thanks Jay.”
Jason steps out of the room.
“Alright guys!” The wedding planner calls out, “on the count of three, turn around. One. Two. Three.”
Dick turns and his breath catches at the sight.
Wally looks stunning. It may be the same tuxedo but seeing him in it is absolutely breathtaking. The jacket and pants are navy, with a maroon vest, white shirt, and navy bow tie. His boutonnière is maroon as well. And it’s perfectly tailored, the way the sleeves hug his shoulders just right. And the length on all of it is perfect. His eyes are nearly glowing against the darker suit. Wally looks just as stunned as Dick feels.
A sob escapes Dick and he claps a hand across his mouth as he starts crying from sheer joy and happiness. That’s it. That’s his future, right in front of him. The person he’s been in love with since they were teenagers. His best friend. The love of his life. His soulmate. Standing there, in a stunning outfit, about to become his husband. After all they’ve been through, together and apart. Pain, and heartache, and tears, and love, and happiness, the good and the bad... they made it to today.
Wally looks alarmed for a split second before he realizes it’s joy. A wide grin stretches onto his face as his eyes flood with tears.
Someone moves first and suddenly they’re standing right in front of each other. They take each other’s hands and Dick laughs breathlessly. “You’re gorgeous.”
Wally laughs and a tear slips from his eye. “God I wanna kiss you.”
“Can it wait thirty minutes?”
“...ok,” Wally pouts, before smiling again, “we’re gonna be husbands!”
“There was a while where I never thought that could happen,” Dick sighs, frowning.
“I like proving you wrong anyway but I’m particularly glad this time.”
Dick smiles. “Yeah.”
“Should we let in the crybabies?”
“We’re already here,” Dick laughs.
“You know what I mean.”
“Hal’s gonna be a fucking wreck.”
“Yep!”
“Ok let’s link arms.”
They do and Dick nods at the wedding planner.
“Three dads, coming right up,” she says, leaving the room. She’s back within a minute, ushering them into the room facing away from their sons.
“Alright dads. Count of three, turn.”
“Three!” Hal yells, turning quickly. Bruce and Barry follow just after him.
Hal gasps. Barry squeaks. Bruce smiles. They walk over to their sons.
“You both look wonderful,” Bruce says quietly, with a surprising amount of emotion in it.
“Oh, Dick, Wally honey, you two look... you look fantastic,” Barry says softly, tears in his eyes. He sniffs. "Already?" he mutters to himself, wiping his eyes.
"Totally thought it would be Hal," Dick whispers into Wally's ear, making him snort.
“Oh my baby boy. All dressed up fancy and getting married. I’m so happy for you guys. You deserve this. You really do. I’m... I’m not gonna cry. Yet,” Hal says, voice already wobbling dangerously.
“Thanks dads,” Wally says quietly.
“Let’s get this party started!” Jason whoops, popping back into the room with the wedding party and Alfred.
“Are we good to go?” Dick asks the wedding planner.
“We don't need to rush but it’d be smart to line up now,” she says.
“Let’s goooo!” Jason says, shooing everyone along.
The whole group lines up behind the aisle and before they know it the song Romantic Flight is already starting. Dick and Wally didn't want to use any cliche processional songs. They actually happened upon theirs by accident. They were watching How To Train Your Dragon with Damian when they heard the song. It came on and they looked at each other, and smiled, having a soundless conversation.
“Officiant, please go ahead," the planner says.
Alfred walks down the aisle confidently, head held high, smiling wide.
The wedding party follows next. Kal, Tim, Zatanna, and Cass head down the left side of the aisle, while Will, Raquel, Artemis, and M’Gann head down the right side.
Then Jason and Connor, side-by-side.
After that, Barry and Hal link arms, while Bruce stands to their left. They walk down the aisle.
“This is it!” Wally cheers quietly.
“Keep it together.”
“We both will absolutely not keep it together, Dick.”
“You guys ready?” The wedding planner grins at them.
They nod.
“Ok. Go get married.”
The music reaches a peak as Dick and Wally start down the aisle, smiling wide, about to burst with happiness.
They get to the end of the aisle, where their dads are standing along the sides, and unlink their arms. Wally gives Bruce a hug while Dick hugs Barry and Hal.
“I couldn’t have picked anyone better for my son, Wally.”
“Thank you, Bruce. I promise I’ll take care of him.
“You always do.”
“Can’t believe this day arrived,” Dick sniffles.
“Well I’m very glad it did,” Hal chuckles.
“You hurt him, you die.” Barry says quietly.
“Jesus Christ Barry,” Hal chides.
“But I love you very much,” Barry smiles.
“I love you both,” Dick laughs.
The dads go sit down and Dick and Wally step up to the altar.
Alfred - their officiant - starts talking, and Dick tries to pay attention. And he does, mostly. But also he can't stop looking at Wally and he is very distracting. Before Dick knows it they’re already at the vows.
“The couple has written their own vows for the ceremony. Richard,” Alfred nods at him to go first.
Dick looks at Wally and takes his hands.
“Hi.”
The crowd laughs.
“Hi,” Wally laughs quietly.
“Sorry,” Dick blushes.
“You’re perfect anyway,” Wally whispers, squeezing his hands.
Dick takes a deep breath.
“Wally, in some form or another, we've always been partners. Whether as teammates, best friends, boyfriends, fiances, and soon, husbands. We've always had each other's backs. We could have entire conversations through eye contact alone. We died together."
Wally just barely flinches at the memory.
"No matter what happened, I was always there for you, and you were always there for me." Dick pauses and looks down at his feet. Takes a deep breath. And looks back up.
"And then you weren't-" Dick says, voice breaking and eyes flooding. He hears a muffled sob from Hal. And then Wally starts silently crying, and his eyes get that guilty look in them. "-you heroic jerk, and I had to relearn my entire life. And it sucked, Wally. But I made it. Because I was scared you would haunt me until I was ok," Dick laughs quietly. Wally chuckles and then wipes his eyes.
"But eventually a miracle happened. And I had to relearn my entire life. Again. And one of the first things you did was, metaphorically, slap some sense into me about a problem I had when you were gone."
Wally squeezes his hands tightly.
Jason's breath hitches behind him.
"You always want the best for me, even if I don't want it myself, even if it would hurt you. You always have. And every day I think I couldn’t possibly love you more... and then I do. Through the worst times and the best times you’ve loved me. And I promise to do the same in return. I will love you until the day I die, and then probably afterwards. You are the absolute love of my life," Dick says, voice breaking yet again. He takes a breath and continues, "I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for us in the future, but whatever happens, I know we’ll do it together. I love you.”
Wally sniffles and pulls a hand out of Dick’s to wipe his eyes.
“Geez man, I still gotta get through mine,” Wally laughs wetly.
“Sorry,” Dick chuckles, smiling gently.
“Ok." Wally also has to take a deep breath. "Dick. The instant I met you I knew you’d be important to me for the rest of my life. Admittedly this was not the context I imagined, but I’m glad it turned out like this. I love you so much. We’ve grown together, learned together. We’ve fought, we’ve made up. It hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows, but every moment has led us here, to this. You are my best friend and you are the man I want to spend the rest of my life with. Dick, I promise to love you when it’s easy and I promise to love you when it’s hard. I will support you in everything you want to accomplish. I promise to be your confidant. To protect you. To pull you up when you’re low and bolster you when you’re high. I’m so excited for the next step in our journey, and wouldn’t want to share it with anyone else. My heart is yours, and I know it’s safe with you. I’m so in love with you: today, tomorrow, for however long life gives us together. I love you Dick.”
Wally spoke a fair amount quicker than Dick. The lucky guy was too quick to get choked up.
Dick is crying but smiling. “I love you,” he whispers.
“And now, it’s time to exchange the rings. Richard, if you will.”
Dick turns to Jason who takes the ring box out of his pocket and opens it for him.
“Thanks,” Dick says, taking the ring and turning back to face Wally. Jason closes the box and pockets it.
“Remember what to say?” Alfred asks quietly.
Dick nods. “Wally, I give you this ring as a symbol of my unending love."
Wally smiles wetly as Dick takes his hand and slides on his wedding band.
“Thank you,” Wally whispers.
Wally turns to Conner and takes the ring from him.
“Dick, I give you this ring as a symbol of my unending love,” Wally says. He slides the ring on Dick’s finger.
“Alright. Now, a moment that is quite overdue. By the power vested in me by the State of New Jersey, I pronounce you husbands. You may kiss.”
Dick and Wally surge forward, wrapping their arms tightly around each other and kissing.
The crowd erupts into cheers.
Dick pulls Wally even closer and kisses him harder, and there’s a couple wolf-whistles from the crowd.
They break apart momentarily and then kiss once again. Then they press their foreheads together, smiling gently.
“I love you so much!”
“I love you, Dick, I love you.”
The music starts and they take a step back from each other and link their arms.
“Ready?”
“Let’s do it.”
I thought love was only true in fairy tales
They jog down the aisle to cheers and enter the manor, making their way to the foyer, the wedding party and their dads following closely behind.
The photographer joins them and they head outside and take tons of photos with each other, their dads, their best men, the wedding party.
Before long, they’re just outside the reception area, ready to enter.
The MC announces their dads, who jog in to cheers. And then the wedding party, more cheers. The best men, cheers.
“And now, for the first time as husbands… Dick and Wally!”
They grin at each other and run into the room to thunderous applause, cheers, and whistles. The wedding party and their dads are in a half circle around the far end of the dance floor. They run to the center of the dance floor and stop.
Wally wraps his arms around Dick’s lower torso, and Dick hugs him a little higher up.
“What’s your bet?” Wally murmurs. “I’m gonna say thirty.”
“Forty,” Dick counters as the music starts and they start slow-dancing.
I found myself dreamin, in silver and gold
“I love you,” Dick whispers, resting his head against Wally’s shoulder.
Like a scene from a movie that every broken heart knows
“I love you,” Wally smiles, momentarily nudging Dick’s head up to kiss him softly.
We were walking on moonlight, and you pulled me close
Dick rests his head back on his shoulder.
Split second and you disappeared and then I was all alone
Dick’s thoughts immediately go to the arctic. Back to the pure visceral terror of seeing the faint Kid Flash symbol on his wrist. Watching his best friend, the man he loves, fade out of existence.
Dick’s breath hitches and Wally’s arms tighten around him as he starts crying softly.
Woke up in tears, with you by my side
Wally kisses the top of his head. “Stay here sweetheart,” Wally murmurs, “don’t go back there.”
A breath of relief, and I realized
“I’m ok,” Dick whispers.
No, we’re not promised tomorrow
“You’re ok. We’re all ok,” Dick tells himself.
So I’m gonna love you
“You’re stuck with me this time.”
Like I’m gonna lose you
“Darlin’,” Wally tacks on at the end in a very bad Georgia accent
“Ugh, I stopped doing that.”
I’m gonna hold you
Like we’re saying goodbye
“Your distraction tactics failed,” Dick said, starting to cry again.
Wherever we’re standing
“By the way, I won. It was twenty-eight seconds.”
Dick laughs through his tears.
I won’t take you for granted
“I totally did,” Dick squeaks, crying harder.
Cause we’ll never know when
When we’ll run out of time
“I did too,” Wally whispers, starting to cry himself.
They continue dancing, gazes locked.
So I’m gonna love you
Like I’m gonna lose you
I’m gonna love you
Like I’m gonna lose you
In the blink of an eye, just a whisper of smoke
You could lose everything, the truth is you never know
Dick starts crying harder. “Why did we pick this song?”
So I’ll kiss you longer baby, any chance that I get
“What were we thinking?!” Dick continues.
I’ll make the most of the minutes
“We weren’t,” Wally laughs. Or sobs. Or something.
And love with no regret.
“Are you laughing or crying?”
“I don’t even know,” Wally admits with a shaky grin.
Lets take our time to say what we want
Use what we got before it’s all gone
“That's totally a euphemism for fuck,” Wally murmurs.
Cause no, we’re not promised tomorrow
"Shut up," Dick laughs.
They continued to dance, cry, talk, and laugh through to the end of the song.
So I’m gonna love you
Like I’m gonna lose you
I’m gonna hold you
Like we’re saying goodbye
Wherever we’re standing
I won’t take you for granted
Cause we’ll never know when
When we’ll run out of time
So I’m gonna love you
Like I’m gonna lose you
I’m gonna love you
Like I’m gonna lose you
It ends and they squeeze each other tightly, kiss, and break apart. Wally walks over to Connor.
“And now, we invite Bruce to the dance floor.”
Dick has no clue what song he picked. Bruce approaches him. They hug and sway gently as the music starts with a simple acoustic intro.
"I'm so proud of you, Dick," Bruce murmurs.
"Thanks dad," Dick sniffles.
"And please don't kill me."
"Oh god what song is it what did you do?"
He ain't got my smile, that don't bother me a bit
Dick doesn't know the song.
He's got somebody else's eyes I'm seeing myself in
"It's funny cause I actually do have your eyes."
"Just listen, Chum," Bruce chuckles fondly.
I'm holdin' onto every moment, god knows I've missed a few
The day we met I knew I had some catchin' up to do
"It's really sweet," Dick smiles.
He ain't my blood, ain't got my name
But if he did I'd feel the same
Dick throat starts tightening and he sniffles.
I wasn't there for his first steps
But I ain't missed a ball game yet
And that ain't ever gonna change
Dick starts crying.
I could never walk away
And Bruce starts crying.
Yeah, he's my son and that's my choice
He ain't my blood, but he's my, he's my boy
Dick cries harder. "Dad, what the fuck?" He starts sobbing from happiness and love.
"I'm sorry," Bruce laughs gently.
"Why would you do this to me?!" Dick laugh-sobs and frantically wipes his eyes.
It hit me like a train, the first time he called me dad
"You thanked me after I comforted you when you had a really bad nightmare," Bruce whispers.
In a three stick figure crayon picture will all of us holdin' hands
"I remember," Dick smiles, "It just kinda slipped out."
His mama said, 'I understand if it's to soon for this'
"Oh thank god, something not relatable, I need an emotional break."
I didn't let her finish, I took it to the kitchen, and I stuck it on the fridge
He ain't my blood, ain't got my name
"God damn it," Dick sighs, crying starting to intensify again.
But if he did I'd feel the same
I wasn't there for his first steps
But I ain't missed a ball game yet
And that ain't ever gonna change
I could never walk away
"Never ever," Bruce murmurs.
Yeah, he's my son and that's my choice
He ain't my blood, but he's my, he's my boy
"You've been my dad twice as long as my actual father," Dick smiles sadly.
He's Saturday morning cartoons
"Yeah," Bruce agrees.
He's 'hey, can I sleep in your room?'
He's bigger than the plans I had
He's makin' me a better man
"Jesus, it gets worse?"
Bruce laughs wetly. "You did this to me."
He ain't my blood, ain't got my name
But if he did I'd feel the same
I wasn't there for his first steps
But I ain't missed a ball game yet
And that ain't ever gonna change
I could never walk away
Yeah, he's my son and that's my choice
He ain't my blood, but he's my, he's my boy
At the end of the final chorus they're both crying but smiling.
"I love you Dad."
Bruce kisses the top of his head. "I love you."
Dick and Bruce make their way off the dance floor as Wally makes his way on, all three of them wiping their eyes.
“We now invite Barry to the dance floor,” the MC says.
Wally grins as his dad walks up to him. He tries to ignore Papa’s split second of hurt on his face. Ridiculous that he thinks Wally won’t include him.
“How much worse am I gonna cry than I just did?” Barry grumbles, eyes already red-rimmed.
“It’s me, you’ll lose it,” Wally chuckles, hugging his dad.
“Not as much as him,” he says, nodding back towards Hal as he hugs him back.
“Accurate.”
The music starts and they start dancing.
“Crap, I don’t know it,” Barry whines.
Wally just shrugs, eyes glinting with mischief.
He doesn’t fight crime, or wear a cape
Barry, and most of the room, laughs.
Wally grins.
He doesn’t read minds, or levitate
But every time my world needs saving
He’s my Superman
“Oh god damn it, here it comes,” Barry sniffles, eyes watering again.
Some folks don’t believe in heroes cause…
They haven’t met my dad
“I love you,” Wally sniffs.
“I love you too, honey. More than you know.”
“Might know one day,” Wally says, eyes flicking to Dick, “I think we’d be good dads.”
“Probably better than me,” Barry chuckles.
“Impossible.”
He loves his workshop, and rock ‘n roll
He’s got a hot rod, and a heart of gold
And you could say he’s a man of few words
“It’s not perfect,” Wally admits.
But he talks a lot within
And even though I’m a little taller
“I hate that fact,” Barry huffs.
I still look up to him
A tear slips from Barry’s eye.
He built me a house in the arms of a tree
He taught me to drive and to fight and to dream
When he looks in my eyes, I hope he can see that
“My dad’s a hero to me,” Wally sings, looking directly into his eyes.
Barry holds in a sob. “You’re gonna be the death of me.”
“Get Papa for me?”
“Good luck.” Barry zips to his husband and gestures at their son.
Hal jogs over to Wally and hugs him tight.
“You seriously thought I wouldn’t include you, asshole?” Wally laughs.
“I… no. Yes. For a second,” Hal admits.
Rust-ridden fenders, and doors full of dings
Somehow he can fix, about anything
“Ridiculous.”
I didn’t think he knew how to cry
‘Til our dog died that year
“Luce,” Hal murmurs fondly.
“The best girl.”
He doesn’t always say I love you
“This part does not apply,” Wally says quickly.
But I can hear him loud and clear
“‘Cause I tell you all the time,” Hal chuckles, eyes wet.
He built me a house in the arms of a tree
He taught me to drive and to fight and to dream
When he looks in my eyes, I hope he can see that
“Papa’s a hero to me,” Wally sings.
Hal starts crying. “Damn it, kid.”
“I’m sorry,” Wally smiles, also crying. He lifts his head and looks at his dad, motioning with his hand.
Barry comes back. Wally stops hugging Hal and takes one of each of his dads’ hands.
They dance freestyle, slowly, during the instrumental break.
He built me a house in the arms of a tree
He taught me to drive and to fight and to dream
Wally starts singing to both of them. “When they look in my eyes, I hope they can see that… my dads are heroes to me.”
Now all three of them are crying.
“My dads are heroes to me.”
They stop dancing and move into a group hug.
“My dads are heroes to me,” Wally murmurs.
“I love you so much, baby boy, so much,” Hal whispers, voice thick and tears on his face.
“Always and forever,” Barry tacks on quietly.
“I love you both,” Wally sniffles, wiping his eyes. “Least I didn’t do Baby Mine.”
“Oh thank god,” Hal laughs, wiping his eyes.
The MC announces that dinner has been served. There’s a final set of cheers and everyone sits down to eat.
