Work Header

All's well that ends well

Summary:

Midori is finding it increasingly difficult to call Chiaki 'just a friend' to his family.

It probably doesn't help to be seen with your 'friend' sat on your lap with their mouth all over yours at a sleepover, but Midori thinks that's up for debate.

Aka, Midori doesn't remember to lock a door, chaos ensues.

Notes:

Warning! I gave Midori's brother a name in this, I hate naming people, but here we are.
Also!! Midori is kind of outed here by his brother. It's implied his family already knew anyway, but if that makes you uncomfortable, the warning is here.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It's late; Ryuseitai practice ran quite frankly too late into the evening for Midori to handle. He's exhausted and sweaty, and in dire need of a shower before he potentially collapses from the overdrive of activity he had to do today. However, like most things for Midori, life just never seems to work in his favour. Does it ever?

It had just so happened that last week, Midori had promised Chiaki that he'd be able to spend the night at his place; and after deliberating with his parents and dealing with the subtle teases of his brother, they had quickly agreed that Chiaki would be a pleasant visitor in their household that had been lacking recently, his mother emphasising with a strange tone how glad she was that Midori had finally gotten close to someone.

Oh, how correct she was about that, perhaps too correct for her own good. His mother has always had terrifyingly accurate instincts, Midori recalls a time she'd warned Midori to move the clay bowl he'd moulded in class away from the windowsill. Perhaps not the prettiest bowl, but for an eight year old Midori, it was his greatest creation. It could probably hardly even be deemed a bowl; more like a slab of clay with a few prods in the middle forming an indent, a sloppy paint job of reds and pinks, along with two stick on googly eyes as embezzlement (because of course everything he'd made had to look cute.)

Midori kept it on the windowsill thinking he knew better, and wanting to show it off to everyone who walked by and looked up. And as his mother had warned, his brother had jumped Midori, making him push forward into the bowl and knocking it into smithereens onto the cold concrete of the shopping district below. Midori had been so heartbroken by the loss he'd set up a funeral for it, and refused to talk to his brother for weeks. And from then on, he never doubted his mother's instincts.

So quite frankly, she was always right. Midori wouldn't admit it this time though, not until Chiaki and he were ready. They had been dating for three months at this point, and with Chiaki approaching graduation, the two of them were bound to be searching for opportunities to spend as much time together as possible.

Midori had been putting this particular idea off for weeks- spending all night with Chiaki sounded like a daunting challenge he wasn't sure if he was willing to go through with yet. And now, they still hadn't even agreed on sleeping arrangements yet. Was Midori meant to set up a futon for him? Was he meant to offer Chiaki the opportunity to sleep with him ?

But, Midori had been hoping to break down more of the barriers Chiaki had put up. No matter how many he had. Sleeping over at another's home would be an impossible feat for anyone to keep up a mask for that long, so if Midori had to resort to that, then so be it. Chiaki had also been prodding him for much longer about it, even before they'd begun dating but Midori couldn't particularly pinpoint as to why

And so, he walks with his boyfriend by his side, one hand holding onto his and Chiaki's school bags, and the other wrapped around Chiaki's own. He still has a smile and a pep in his step despite the strenuous workout they'd been through, looking rather excited that what he'd been hoping for was finally coming true. Midori hopes he's not expecting too much.

The sun is beginning to set when Chiaki turns his gaze towards Midori, his smile dropping from a burning smile to a simpler, warmer one. "It's really beautiful out today, isn't it? You normally rush home as soon as school finishes, so I bet you don't get to see the sunset often." He ends it with a chuckle, and Midori rolls his eyes.

"You're saying that as if I can't look outside of my window. Which I do, by the way."

Chiaki squeezes his hand against his own, "Yeah, but then it's not natural! You need to be out in the breeze and feel the sun on you, Takamine."

Ironic as it is, Midori isn't too fond of the sun. He doesn't need two of them in his life. "Whatever..." He shrugs as they approach the storefront, and Chiaki follows him past the shelves and into the back where the door to his home hides behind. Midori drops his hand from Chiaki's, reaching for his pocket to pull out his keys before sliding it into the lock and pushing it open.

Before Midori even gets his first shoe off, his mother is instantly by Chiaki's side, an apron wrapped around her front and her hospitality all too prominent. "Chiaki-san! It's lovely to have you this evening! Please, come in, come in!"

Midori finally gets his shoes off around the same time as Chiaki, kicking them to the side as he places their bags down onto the floor. He sometimes forgets how well they get on together. "Thank you for having me over, Takamine-san! I hope I'm not too much of a disturbance for you tonight!" Chiaki beams.

"Oh, not at all. I'm actually preparing dinner at the moment! It should be ready in half an hour or so, make yourself at home in the meantime." She turns to Midori with much less hospitality. "Midori, go and set up the futon in your room. And make sure to be a good host, okay?"

"Okay, mom." He sighs, and heaves the bags up once again, gesturing for Chiaki to follow behind him. It's a short walk up the stairs, but Midori's arms and legs are aching, so it feels like an eternity. As they make their way down the hallway, Midori notices the door across from his own is ajar, meaning his brother must not be home tonight. Thank god, he'd never hear the end of it if he knew that Chiaki would be staying over.

Once they enter the room, Midori immediately drops the bags down onto the floor once again, and flops down onto his bed. As much as he wants to take a shower and just sleep, he offers Chiaki the opportunity to shower first. In the meantime, Midori busies himself with taking the futon out from his closet, laying it out on the floor as his mother has requested, though a part of him highly doubted it would actually be used. Luckily, quick showers were a norm for members of the basketball club, and Chiaki was out of the shower just as quick as he'd entered, along with Midori a few minutes after.

When Midori comes back into his room, he's greeted by Chiaki lying on his stomach on Midori's bed, tapping away at his phone. He's dressed in tokusatsu print pyjamas, which Midori can't help but find extremely fitting for his interests, though a part of him is a little disappointed he hadn't been able to see Chiaki dressed in his pyjamas.

He brushes the thought aside, "Where did you get those from?" He gestures to Chiaki's clothes who seems to have already been aware of Midori's presence by the sound of the door opening and closing.

With a smile, Chiaki turns to Midori, changing his position into sitting against the wall instead, leaving enough space for Midori to join him. It's a silent invitation that he graciously accepts, and he climbs onto the bed and settles next to him, their shoulders touching in a reassuring comfort. "I left a bag of essentials this morning in your room when I came to wake you up this morning." He chuckles, "Did you think I would come empty handed or something?"

"Maybe," Midori yawns, and moves to put his arm around Chiaki's waist, pulling him into his lap. If anyone ever heard him say how grabbable Chiaki's waist was, they were dreaming. Definitely.

Placidly, he lets his hands meet around Chiaki's stomach, resting comfortably. He can't help but bring up his qualm despite his tired state. "You could've worn my clothes…"

Chiaki hums, making himself comfortable in his new position, and leans his back against Midori's chest. It sounds as if he's genuinely considering Midori's words, "They'd be a little big on me, don't you think?"

Their proximity brings Midori back down to his bearings, and with every inhale in Chiaki's vicinity, his mind registers the fact that Chiaki smelled like him . He'd probably used the same shower gel. That thought, along with the feeling of Chiaki in his arms sends alarm bells in the sane part of his mind, and blood rushing to the south of his body from the more shameful part. He didn't even want to imagine Chiaki in his pyjamas, looking oversized on him, his collar too far down revealing the plain of his chest–

Fuck , Midori curses to himself. Perhaps he was more afraid of having Chiaki over in fear of what he'd do to him more than anything else.

In order to quell his deeper desires, Midori bargains with himself into peppering kisses onto Chiaki's nape, earning a small hitch in his breath. "Takamine…" he breathes, and cranes his neck further backwards against Midori's shoulder until he can get access to his lips. "We've got to eat soon…"

Midori doesn't care, he'd rather eat up Chiaki's sentences than his mom's food at this point. When Chiaki moves his head back, Midori doesn't waste a beat before planting his lips on Chiaki's, warm and welcoming and everything Midori lacked. He doesn't end up verbally replying, instead conveying his thoughts through his physical actions instead. One of his hands ran up Chiaki's shirt, pushing it up a little to feel Chiaki's oh so perfect skin below it.

Chiaki doesn't seem to expect it, jumping a little at the touch, and brings his own hands to cup Midori's cheeks the best he can.  It's such an unbelievably teenage couple thing to do, Midori can't help but feel a little ashamed by how they're shamelessly making out while his family is home, but he likes Chiaki's lips a little too much to care.

Midori's other hand moves down to grip Chiaki's thigh, his thumb rubbing in small circles, more of a reassurance to himself to not take this too far. He doesn't know if Chiaki's ready to take their relationship that step further, and it's not a choice he thinks he should be making with his parents home anyway.

He's content with simply kissing and caressing Chiaki, and he would've done so for longer. If it hadn't been for his door practically flying open.

"Midori, Mom said that dinners–" he hears a cough, "ready…"

Fuck.

He feels Chiaki practically spring off of Midori and onto his feet, with obvious poorly hidden embarrassment. Midori really should've locked the door.

Wait…

"T-tadashi?! Why are you–"

" Takamine! " Chiaki practically squeals, his face bright red, "I am so starving, let's go down and eat. Like, Now !"

Midori huffs, clearly Chiaki doesn't want to have this conversation. So, he leaves his position on the bed and follows Chiaki down the hallway. He spares a glance towards his brother, ensuring that mention of whatever he saw was forbidden.

Midori pushes the vegetables around on his plate with his chopsticks, looking over to Chiaki every now and then. It's incredibly uncomfortable at the table, with Chiaki and Midori sitting next to each other, and Midori's mother and brother opposite them.

"Where's dad…?" Midori questions.

"He had an emergency call from your uncle. His food is in the fridge." His mother replies dryly, almost immediately, she looks to Chiaki. "Are you enjoying the food, Chiaki-san? I made sure it consisted of no eggplants!"

"Oh, it's delicious! Thank you for the consideration," Chiaki replies, almost a little too quick. He still looks completely uncomfortable. His mother shoots Midori a death glare. He immediately reads it as ' what did you do?', but Midori simply shrugs and turns back towards his plate. There's no way in hell he's telling her how he was making out with his supposed ' friend' in his bed and was fucking caught doing it.

Apparently, his brother has other ideas. "So, you must be pretty close with everyone in your unit."

Chiaki practically jumps at the opportunity to clear his mind. "Yeah, we're all really close! As the leader I make sure we spend a lot of time together, like movie nights and study sessions and charity events! They're a great group of people!" He smiles, looking much less forced this time. He always sounded genuine when speaking about Ryuseitai. Midori's glad.

He can't help but add on, "Yeah, Morisawa-senpai has a lot of different ways of bonding with us all, since we have a lot of different interests. Well, besides the tokusatsu marathons. Those are just for him..."

Chiaki let's out a small, hey! But Midori's brother cuts him off with a loud hum. "Oh, so you have a lot of different ways of bonding with one another. That's nice." Chiaki hums in agreement, and his brother continues.

Midori wishes he hadn't.

"So like, your guy's way of bonding is necking eachother?"

Immediately, his mother audibly slaps the back of Midori's brother's head, and Midori wishes he could've done it himself. " Tadashi Takamine , you are a future lawyer! I do not want to hear you saying that language in this house." She scolds. "I'm so sorry about that, Chiaki-san! My sons are just…Well, I'm sure you know what I mean."

Chiaki gulps, Midori wouldn't be surprised if he passed out. "It's fine," he manages.

"It's not my fault they were all over each other when I walked in. They aren't subtle about it at all. I mean, I knew we all thought Midori was gay , but–"

His mother slams the table, a manic look on her face, Midori almost feels like laughing if he hadn't heard the last bit of what his brother had said. "How about you eat dinner in your room tonight, Tadashi? Don't you have that important essay due next week you need to work on too?" Her voice is strained, it's definitely some kind of threat.

"Mom, I'm an adult. I don't need–"

" Tadashi ."

Even his brother knew better now to argue, and quickly scooped up his plate before running upstairs, the door slamming behind him. His mother starts again, a large smile plastered on her face. "Midori, I am not going to question this right now. We have a guest here." She takes a deep breath, as if calming herself. "Talk to me about it when you're ready."

Midori turns his head towards Chiaki, who looks at him with remnants of mortification, his only reply being a blink.

He turns back to his mother, a relieved smile on his face. He's grateful she's willing to be patient. "Thanks, mom."

After dinner, they spend the rest of the night in Midori's room, watching obscure rom coms on Midori's television. Sometime through the night, Tadashi comes in to apologise, this time knocking, but Midori shoos him away before he gets the chance to tease again.

"At least we don't have to hide it anymore..!" Chiaki bites his lip, obviously trying to see the best in their situation.

"I know I said I'm sorry before, but I'm really sorry my brother said that stuff, he really thinks he's funny." Midori leans his head against Chiaki's shoulder, a solemn consolation. "You know how older siblings are… Makes me wanna die."

"I can imagine." Chiaki comments, his fingers toying with Midori's. "It's okay though! All's well that ends well, right?"

"Right," Midori echoes, pulling Chiaki closer to him. "All's well that ends well."
