Work Text:

It’s almost time

It had been a few weeks now since Joonghyuk had spotted Dokja on the shore, pale sallow skin and skinny body blending in with the bleached white sand and driftwood logs.

He knew that Dokja saw him too.

Ever since that day, he’d been singing his melodic and anguished song, the sound of it echoing loudly across the small seaside town even though only person could hear it—and he would head the call soon enough. Dokja would only be able to hold back his his curious temptation and resistance to the supernatural persuasion for so long.

Humans came from sirens—or so they say. According to lore, humans had once been sirens who had desired to walk on land. To make their wish come true, they sacrificed their marine forms and their magic—the life blood of sirens from which their hypnotic power is derived. Even if those first humans regretted their choice, there was no way for them to go back to the sea. The only possible way for them to return would be if a siren granted them the right, and the sirens that had once been the kin of the first humans had no intention of helping traitors who had turned their backs on the ocean.

Finally, when the moon was full, and the tides of the ocean and the magic within it were at their strongest, Dokja came to the shoreline.

Fresh bruises adorned the young man’s pale skin marring his delicate beauty glowing beneath the moonlight. His eyes were sunken, hopeless, and full of despair. He had given up and despite understanding what Joonghyuk was, he still came to throw himself into the sea.

But the death he sought would not come.

Instead he would be reborn.

Joonghyuk pulled Dokja beneath the waves, cradling him in his arms and wrapping his muscled tail around Dokja’s instinctively kicking legs. Then he dragged the smaller man down to the depths. At first there was no fear on Dokja’s pretty face; he appeared solely enraptured by Joonghyuk. But despite having wished for death, his instincts fought against his will, desperately seeking to return to the surface and its life saving air. He kicked, thrashed, and clawed at Joonghyuk but a weak human body was no match for the lithe muscle and powerful body of an ocean predator. Bubbles escaped Dokja’s red lips the moment his burning lungs could no longer hold onto the air inside. The horror of water filling his lungs faded into an eerie calm as his life faded away.

It was at that moment that Joonghyuk crushed his lips against his stars, filling his beloved with magic, transforming him into a creature of the sea.

—————————

A lone drunkard had seen Dokja walking into the sea but his inebriated mind had foolishly thought the young man was simply going for a midnight swim. A small funeral was held a month later, with Dokja’s aunt and uncle doing the absolute bare minimum to not be perceived in a poor light by their community. After that, no one in that small seaside town thought of poor pitiful Kim Dokja again.

But two years later, in the summer months, around the same time Dokja had gone missing, tragedy struck the town.

First, the mangled body of a troubled man know for his unruly behavior and constant bullying of those weaker than himself, washed ashore torn to shreds. His face was especially mangled, and his body was only identified when his mother noticed a unique scar that he had gotten when he was little. Next, a teacher at the local school went missing. No body was ever found. The third tragedy was the most gruesome. Over the course of a few days the body parts of Mister Kim, his wife, and their son washed ashore to greet the horrified residents. With that, the Kim Family who had lived in the town for generations, was wiped out in one fell swoop.

The final tragedy was the worst of all: a bad fishing season decimated the town’s economy, the waters they had fished for generations suddenly emptied of their livelihood.

The elder fisherman muttered nonsense about sirens, but the town paid no attention to them.

They were right of course. Two sirens had been responsible for all of the town’s misfortunes.

Upon returning to the shores of the town, Dokja and Joonghyuk took revenge on the town and all who had harmed Joonghyuk’s precious star. The flesh of the townsfolk they killed was too foul and worthless for them or their pup to eat, so they simply let it float ashore. Once they had completed their revenge, the young siren family left the area for better hunting grounds in which to raise their pup, far away from the foul cursed fishing village which would never again have a good fishing season.
