Puss plopped down into the gnarled roots of a half-felled tree, his diminutive stature allowing himself to be completely obscured by the shadows they offered as he desperately tried to calm his racing heart and catch his breath. Once the blood roaring in his ears had quelled enough to allow him to hear his surroundings, he strained for any sound heralding the presence of none other than the reaper of souls.
Puss might have that saving grace of an item that made it so Death couldn’t sense where he was with his reaper magic, but it was only a matter of time before the wolf would track him down with his keen senses and many years of practice hunting prey.
In other words, Puss’ time was running out.
He then noticed a shifting of light to his side and turned to face it, only to be met with a pair of glowing crimson eyes.
No.
Blood draining from his face, Puss turned to make a run for it, but it was too late. He didn’t make it more than a step before a lightning fast hand shot out and grabbed him from behind. He then felt himself being lifted through the air and finally brought face to face with Death himself.
“Gotcha~” The wolf lilted.
“No fair,” Puss crossed his arms in a huff. “you started looking before you finished counting to one hundred.” He complained, glaring up at the reaper with a stubborn pout.
“That’s because you started running before I began the count.” Death countered with a knowing smirk.
Damnit, he’d been hoping the reaper wouldn’t notice.
“You know what this means now, don't you?” The wolf rumbled, expression not changing.
“How could I forget?” Puss responded wryly.
“How about saying it for those in the back to hear?” Death prompted despite no one being around for miles.
“I’ll wear your cloak to bed every night for the next week.” Puss drawled, rolling his eyes at the reaper’s theatrics, but unable to suppress an amused smile.
“Good.” Death smirked before closing the distance between them and nuzzling Puss’ cheek with his own, the gesture being returned without hesitation.
Puss smirked internally at his own genius. Thing was he liked wearing his boyfriend’s cloak to sleep. It was just more fun to let the wolf think he had to work for it. Plus he knew Death would feel like he owed him for being such a good sport about it and would end up giving him the massages Puss had been trying to secure by winning this little game of hide and seek anyway.
So no matter who won, Puss came out on top.
