I didn't expect to meet you

Summary:

Maya and Carina meet in different situation. The bear didn't show up at the camping and no one's nose was bitten off.
Being a firefighter, Maya usually is the one who rides people to hospitals and calls them to remind them the patient coming in.
Or, she is the one being checked up and hearing her report there, or being there supporting their fire family.
She's rarely got phone call from hospital.

She definitely not expects to see someone from hospital.

Notes:

Another what if popped up in my head, and I'm running away from my anxiety.

Chapter 1: Reason

Chapter Text

"32, male, complained about stomach pain before fainted." the EMT says, popping out of the aid car. "His friend mentioned that he's clean for years."

"OK. Trauma 2." the chief resident nods and takes them in. "Do we have a name?"

"Mason Bishop." the EMT says and rolls the patient with the doctors.

"Check his vital." Dr. Schmitt tells the other intern and does the abdominal ultrasound on the patient. "And page Dr. Grey."

"Dr. Grey is still in the surgery with Dr. Altman." the intern takes a look of the screen of ultrasound machine, "Acute appendicitis, right?"

"Page Dr. Deluca then." Levis Schmitt says, looking at the intern, and nods at the phone aside, "And book an OR."

---

"Ughhhh...." a low groan coming from the patient lying in bed with unpleasant look.

"Hello, Mr. Bishop." Andrew puts down the paper and says gently to the patient. "I'm Dr. Deluca."

"Doctor? What? Why am I in..." Tight eyebrows frowning together showing on the blonde man's look when he tries to sit up, "Ouch! Shit!"

"Hey! Hey! Hey! Easy." Andrew quickly raises his hands trying to calm his patient, "You friend called 911 because you fainted. Your friend said you complained about stomach pain? That's acute appendicitis. I just took care of it."

"YOU OPERATED ME ?!!!" Mason's eyes widen and looks down on the inner side of his forearm, trying to put out the needle. "I can't."

"It's fine! I didn't use opioid!" Andrew quickly interrupts and lower his voice, "I didn't use opioid. Don't worry. Your friend mentioned that you're clean for years."

The blonde man scratches his hair and looks anxious or annoyed, "When can I leave? How soon can I leave?"

"Depends on your recovery, it could take you 3-5 days, and then resting at home for a week." Andrew sighs in relief after Mason stops pulling out his IV.

"Three to five?! Are you serious? I'm leaving!"

And after the statement, Mason sits up again and tries to get off the bed and Andrew opens his arms wide to block Mason, "Hey! Stop! Why are you so hurry? What's the matter?"

"I'm leaving! Get out of my way, doc." the blonde man tries to lift his left legs, but the wound on his stomach teared. "Ouch! Stupid wound!"

"Please, Mr. Bishop. Please lie back and not tearing up the stitches. It's painful." Andrew says in soften voice but firm, "You can't go home like that."

"Mason?"

A familiar and hesitant voice coming from the door.

"Mason? Are you...OK? What's..."  "Stop!"

The pointed look and threatening tone makes the visitor shuts her eyes immediately.

"I don't wanna see you, Maya." Noticing his sister's look and the familiar authority tone from his disgusting gene, Mason says more calmly this time.

Maya stands at the entrance of the room, not sure what to do and she notices the tall man in white coat quietly standing next to her brother. "Are you Mason's doctor? You called me?"

"Hi, Ms. Bishop, I'm Dr. Deluca. I called you cause you're Mr. Bishop's emergency contact. And yes, I'm Mr. Bishop's doctor." Andrew opens up after the weird silence settling between the two blondies.

"What happened to my brother? Did he get hurt?" Maya asks and keep glancing at Mason, checking him.

"I'm fine. I don't wanna see you and dad. I'll take care of myself. I'm clean. That's all you need to know." the blonde man turns his face and stares at the window, not looking his sister at all.

"I don't..." Maya stops herself from saying out loud something she didn't mean, "It's good to hear you're clean, Mason. Which means you're doing well and I'm glad to hear you're doing well." she says calmly. "Dad won't hear anything about you from me. We're not talking anymore."

The blonde man huffs in disbelieve, "Not talking? You're his golden child. He's not talking to you cause your work boots covered in mud and you didn't polish them bright?"

Maya takes a deep breath to collect herself and looks down at the floor staring at her own work boots, which are clean. "Mom and dad are divorced and I snapped at him during work."

"Mom is divorced?" Mason finally turns to look at his sister.

"Yes, mom came to my work to tell me couple years ago. And I haven't spoke to dad since I snapped at him." Maya cleans her throat, "Can we talk, Mason? I know you hate me. But I know what you mean now. I'm... I'm different and I've miss you."

...

...

...

Mason doesn't say a word, clearly struggling in his mind and processing everything his sister just told him.

Maya sighs again, "Look. You can tell me to fuck off after talking. Give me a chance at least?"

The younger blonde man takes a deep breath in and reluctantly gives in, "Fine."

A relief smile appears on the elder blonde woman's gorgeous face, and she walks closer to the bedside.

"I'll come back to check on you later, Mr, Bishop." the brunette doctor smiles and nods at the blonde siblings.

---

"I'm ordering pizza." Andrew hits the button and text sent.

"Hi, Dr. Deluca." A soft but shy voice and a pair of boots shows up in his sight.

Andrew quickly tilts his head up from the phone and surprised to see Maya at the entrance. "Hi! Ms. Bishop!"

"Maya is fine." the blonde woman smiles weakly and reaches out her hand, "Sorry, I didn't have the time to thank you when you came back to check on Mason earlier."

"Thank you for calling me. I've never thought that I could see my brother again."

The brunette man shines a warming smile and takes Maya's hand shaking it lightly, ""You're welcome. I'm glad to see family members get together."

"Yeah, he accepted that I'm staying to take care of him. We couldn't be here if you didn't call." the smile on Maya's face is complicated. Andrew notices that but he doesn't mention it. It's not his business and Maya didn't reveal much.

"Andrea, you ready to go?"

A light voice of heels hitting on the floor louder and louder coming to them. Andrew Deluca turns to the familiar voice.

"Ciao." A beautiful wavy brunette woman in a fancy jacket leaves light kisses on both side the brunette man's cheeks. "Sorry, I didn't notice we have company. Hi, I'm Dr. Carina Deluca." she notices the shorter blonde woman who's blocked by her brother and reaches out her hand.

"Hi, I'm Maya." the blondie quickly smiles to the brunette woman and takes Carina's hand shaking it gently. While they're shaking hands, Andrew gestures the blonde woman to his sister, "Maya is my patient's sister. We're talking about her brother." And the brunette woman takes the chance to look the woman into her eyes in front of her. A beautiful woman with beautiful blonde hair and crystal blue eyes and small smile curling up with delicate pink lips.

They holds hands a bit longer than being polite before letting go, but none of these two shows any discomfort though.

Maya smiles brighter when she thinks of Mason being fine after surgery, "Yeah, Dr. Deluca saved my brother's live and I just ran into him after picking up my brother's stuff."

Carina is surprised of Maya's smile. She doesn't think she has ever seen smiles brighter than hers. She smiles bigger unconsciously matching Maya's, "It's very nice of you taking care of your brother."

Hearing Carina's compliment reminds her the day she won the gold medal and Mason OD'd. She should protect and take care of her brother, but she didn't do it. Last time.

"No, it's what a sister should do." Maya's smile falls but remaining a small smile.

Sensing the change of Maya's tone and her look, Carina doesn't know what's in the beautiful woman's mind. She jokes and eases the atmosphere, "Yeah, taking care of your brother is hard sometimes."

"Hey!"

Andrew protests weakly. He knows Carina sacrificed a lot for him and he does not the best brother of the world. He didn't cut her any loose after they reunite together in Seattle. He's her pain in the ass sometimes.

Carina glances at her little brother and smirks.

Maya sees the back and forth in front of her and some dots connect now. "You two are siblings? I thought you are married couple."

The surprised confession brings the siblings' attention to the woman in front of them, "Nah." "Oh no. No. No. No." they says at the same time.

The disdained face and waving off gesture from the siblings amuses the blondie who chuckles lightly. "I'm sorry. I misunderstood."

"Don't worry about it, bella." Carina says gently with warm smile, happy to hear the shorter beautiful blonde chuckling, happy she's the one who makes her laugh.

Maya clears her throat and composes herself, "Well, it's late and I should go back to Mason."

"it's very nice to meet you, Dr. Carina Deluca, and thank you again, Dr. Andrew Deluca." She nods at the siblings, "You two have a nice night."

"Nice to meet you, too. Maya." Carina nods back and says softly.

"I'll see you two tomorrow, Maya. Have a nice night." Andrew says.

After saying goodbye, Maya walks to the elevator with smile on her face and the Deluca siblings walk to the parking lot. Carina rests her hand on brother's upper arm and Andrew automatically raises his hand like a gentleman letting his sister grabbing his arm from falling down on those high heels.

Before walking out of the door, Carina turns her head slightly over to glance at the shorter blonde woman.

"We need to stop by the store getting my beer before grabbing pizza." the brunette doctor says and busy something on his phone.

The other brunette woman brings her gaze from the blonde woman to the road in front of her,

"What's the reason Maya's brother in the hospital?"
