Chapter Text
Esmeray Hale
The woods were quiet.
A bit to quiet, in Esmeray's opinion.
As she traveled the woods in her wolf form—which was much bigger than the average wolf, with black fur, yellow eyes, and one red paw— she heard a scream. She quickly took off in the direction in the scream and saw a boy in a red hoodie being pinned down by a monstrous looking beast, who had sunken its teeth into the boy's hip.
The Alpha. Esmeray realized. The beast that killed Laura.
When Esmeray had felt her already thin, strained, pack bond with Laura break she had gone out to search for her cousin. The beast let the boy go (she vaguely recognized the boy from school) and the boy took off.
The beast turned around to face her and Esmeray felt a flicker of a pack bond between her and the Alpha, which became stronger and more sure. The Alpha growled and took off. Esmeray took off as well, following the boy's cedar and lemon scent to the edge of a road, jumping over a large tree stump on the way. She growled softly when the boy turned to her, brown eyes wide and filled with panic.
She could smell the blood from the bite. The born werewolf memorized his face to find at school (did they have chemistry together? She was pretty sure they did.) and felt a flicker of a pack bond between them. She growled and took off for Deaton's house.
The Druid was waiting for her. Esmeray shifted back into her human form, thankful that whenever she shifted, she retained her clothing. She had only lost her clothes the first time she had shifted.
"Did you find her?" Deaton asked, handing her a mug of tea. Esmeray followed him inside the house.
"The Alpha bit someone. Teenager my age, brown eyes, crooked jaw." she said. "And I didn't find her."
"His name is Scott. He works at the clinic." Deaton said. "He goes to high school with you."
"The full moon is this Friday." Esmeray said. "Indeed. That means we have to be careful." Deaton agreed.
The next day at school, Esmeray put away her books and grabbed the ones she needed. She tuned out the rest of the noise from the hallway. "Focus on what you want to see, to hear. Ignore the rest until you expand the range to how you want it to be." Satomi had told her.
"There's the new girl." Lydia, her best friend, said. Esmeray turned to see the leggy brunette. "Let's go say hi." Lydia said. "Let me grab my books." Esmeray said dryly, grabbing her books, putting them in her messenger bag, and walking in step with Lydia to the new girl.
"That jacket is absolutely killer. Where'd you get it?" Lydia asked.
"My mom was a buyer for a boutique back in San Francisco." the leggy brunette said with a smile. "And you are my new best friend." Lydia said.
"What am I, chopped liver?" Esmeray deadpanned.
"You are my childhood best friend." Lydia quickly corrected. The new girl smiled. "I'm Allison Argent."
Esmeray stiffened instantly, as did Lydia. Lydia, her best friend, who was aware of the supernatural, and the family that bore the surname Argent.
"Esmeray Hale." she said with a forced smile. "Lydia Martin." Lydia said.
She heard Jackon's footsteps and shifted to be next to Allison when the lacrosse captain put a hand around Lydia's waist. Allison sent Esmeray a face that read Couple? and Esmeray nodded.
"So Hale, you didn't tell us you had a look alike." Jackson said.
"What?" Esmeray and Allison chorused and Esmeray looked at Allison, who she saw was doing the same.
Jackson was right. They had the same lips, eye shape, nose, and chin. They were both 5'8 in height. One of the main differences was that Allison had brown hair and brown eyes to Esmeray's black hair and blue eyes. But even then, their hair was the same naturally loose curls style.
"Well, it's a coincidence." Allison said.
"Now, you're coming to practice right?" Jackson asked Lydia.
"Yes, Esmeray and Allison are coming as well." Lydia said.
"I didn't—"
"Good, see you there." Jackson said, kissing Lydia and walking away. "She who will not be named will be at lacrosse practice." Esmeray said to her best friend, scowling.
"Who?" Allison said.
"Maya Dare. Esmeray's evil ex." Lydia said.
Allison's eyes widened and she turned to Esmeray, who raised a challenging eyebrow. "I'm pan." she said.
"I don't have a problem with that. My second cousin Nathan is gay." Allison said.
"She's approved." Lydia said, linking her arm with Esmeray's. Allison took Lydia's other arm and Esmeray smiled softly at the Argent girl.
Maybe the Argent girl wouldn't be too bad.
"She's not here. Thank whatever god that exists." Esmeray said, sitting down at the bleachers. "If Maya was here I would be hard press not to kill her."
"Do I wanna know what happened?" Allison tentively asked.
"No." Esmeray chorused in sync with Lydia.
The lacrosse players came out. "So there's this party this Friday." Lydia said. "A party?" Allison said.
"Yeah. Everyone's coming after the lacrosse scrimmage." Lydia said. "'Football is a joke. Lacrosse is the sport here.'" Esmeray quoted Jackson. A scent of cedar and lemon hit her nose and she turned, scanning the players until she found McCall. Her blue eyes meet his brown.
"McCall!" the coach yelled, tossing some kind of lacrosse gear. Esmeray's eyes narrowed when she saw him swiftly catch the gear before it could hit his chest. "You're on goal." she the coach say.
"Who's that?" Allison asked, and Esmeray pulled back her senses. She watched the possible werewolf cock his head in their direction.
"I think his name is Scott." Esmeray mused. The whistle blew and she winced, rubbing her forehead as it blasted against her superhuman ears.
Scott did the same and that was when she knew that Scott had survived the bite. And was now a werewolf... a werewolf with no pack, no Alpha. Like her.
"Lydia." she murmured so softly that Scott couldn't hear her, getting her best friend's attention. "Scott? He's like me now."
"He's been bit?" Lydia whispered equally soft.
"Bit." Esmeray confirmed.
