Chapter Text
Wilson slowly took a breath in, filling his lungs as quietly as he could. His hands shook lightly as he slipped a pistol out of the holster at his hip with one hand and gripped it firmly with his other hand.
One week.
It was hard to ignore the squelch of human flesh and the groans of the undead, especially when the source was just around a corner. Wilson sucked in another lungful of air, trying to calm his racing heart and his agitated stomach.
One week was how long he managed to last before he had to shoot someone.
The apocalypse came suddenly and unexpectedly; one day everything was all and well, and the next, the world quickly turned to hell. On the news, people began attacking and biting each other, coherent words slurring into grunts and moans while reporters advised citizens to stay inside. Wilson was lucky to have made it this far without getting his hands dirty. Living near the edge of the city left his family as one of the last to have been affected by this plague.
The hunter pressed himself against the wall, hyping himself up and counting down the seconds until he'd be ready. He knew he wouldn't be able to go for much longer without shooting a person or two.
No, Yu Q. You can't think like that, he scolded as he tightened his grip on the gun, They're infected now. This will be just like every other monster you've shot.
Wilson took another breath in, another sigh out.
Three.
Two.
One.
Wilson rounded the corner, and nearly froze up in horror.
Blood pooled on the ground, spare limbs and strips of flesh were strewn across the room, a familiar face turning to face him, an empty eye socket staring, staring, staring—
Bang!
Wilson turned and threw open the door before booking it down the street, struggling to keep his breakfast down. Houses passed him in a blur as he took turn after turn, sprinting past zombies and deserted vehicles.
You had to do it, Yu Q., he thought to himself as he fought to keep his breath under control. Tears sprang to his eyes from- from running so fast. You would've been next. They knew. They'd understand.
In the distance, the city was only a day's journey away. It was a promising land full of supplies— and more zombies. As Wilson slowed to a stop to catch his breath, he fought back the tears threatening to choke him. He thought he'd have more time to prepare. He thought they'd all had more time...
But the end of the world waits for nobody.
