When I Saw You Standing There

Summary:

Missed Connection: Konoha City Library. You were the guy with the messy silver hair and great ass who was feeding treats to a pug in a backpack. I was the girl at the table next to yours that you smiled at. I went to the bathroom, and you left before I could ask your name.

Or:
That awkward moment when the cute guy from the library turns out to be your professor.

Notes:

I wanted to write something for KakaSaku Week 2023, for the Modern AU/Missed Connections prompt. But it started to get pretty chonky (story of my life), so I decided to split it into two parts. The second half will arrive soon!

Big thanks to Nyxako for betaing! <3 <3 <3

Chapter Text

Kakashi had only been in the library for an hour and a half, and he was already struggling to focus. It wasn’t just that he hated typing up syllabi for his classes—it was that Pakkun had woken up, and was making soft little boofs to get his attention. In retrospect, he probably shouldn’t have brought a pug in a backpack to a public library. It had seemed like a good idea at the time.

The semester was just about to start, and Kakashi had, predictably, waited until the last minute to finalize all of his lesson plans. He’d thought a good session on his laptop at the library was just what he needed to get everything in order. He’d even come to the city library instead of the university library, so he could avoid anybody from the school that he knew. He was all business.

Well, except for the pug thing.

The blue pup backpack he’d brought Pakkun in was on the seat beside him and completely unzipped, and Kakashi made little shushing noises as he scratched Pakkun behind the ears. Pakkun unhelpfully let out a dramatic whine, and Kakashi was reaching for a treat to distract him—right up until a soft little giggle reached his ears, completely distracting him.

Pakkun’s ears perked, and Kakashi could’ve sworn his did, too, as he turned to find the source of the sound.

At the table behind his, a woman with very startlingly pink hair sat holding her hand over her mouth, bright green eyes filled with mirth above it. Pakkun let out another boof and this time her giggle was even less smothered than the last, and she let her hand drop, having apparently given up on keeping quiet. Kakashi’s lips parted without his express permission. He didn’t mean to gape at her, but even in just a powder blue hoodie and grey leggings, she was beautiful. The fact that the hoodie also said “Fuck Off” in delicate, flowery script just made him want to know her even more.

Kakashi was just in the midst of giving her what he hoped was a charming smile when Pakkun let out a decidedly louder, demanding yip. In the next minutes, Kakashi focused on quieting Pakkun down, which included bribing him with several of his favorite bacon-flavored treats. When he finally looked up, hoping to catch a particular pretty girl’s eye again, he saw that she was gone—leaving behind a coffee cup, several opened books, and a packet of tissues. That was good. Maybe she would come back. Maybe Kakashi could—

“Excuse me, sir, but is that a dog in your backpack?”

The unmistakable ire in the question made Kakashi wince, and he faced forward in order to meet the glare of the main librarian, who was now standing in front of his table. He cleared his throat and began, “I can explain—”

His explanations were for naught, and it was scarcely a minute and a half later that Kakashi found himself standing on the sidewalk outside of the library, where he had been unceremoniously marched after being told that he was banned for a week. There was no amusement on the librarian’s face when Kakashi asked him if he could leave a note for the cute girl inside, especially when Kakashi had to admit he didn’t even know her name.

On the ride home, he lectured Pakkun, but his heart wasn’t in it. In fact, all his heart seemed to want to do was moon over what felt like a missed opportunity to talk to a very pretty woman. He told himself that it didn’t really matter, since he hadn’t even gotten a chance to get to know her, but even as he was telling Pakkun what ‘we’ do not do in public, all he could think of was that sweet little giggle, and sparkling green eyes.

“I never should have told you about this.” Sakura let out a groan as she buried her head in her arms.

“I was the best person to talk to about this!” Naruto exclaimed, tapping her head. “Besides, what else are you going to think about? These are our last days before the semester starts, do you really want to think about school before you have to?”

Sakura groaned again, into her arms this time. She didn’t want to admit it, but he was right. Talking about a cute guy was way better than thinking about the grueling medical school schedule that she was about to step into. She couldn’t hide her head in her arms forever.

When she finally raised her head, Naruto was grinning at her, and beside him, Sasuke looked slightly amused. “Calm down, Naruto,” Sasuke said. “Sakura, start from the beginning.”

“I already told you. I was at the library—”

“Which library?” Sasuke interrupted.

“Ooh, yes, details are important,” Naruto said.

“I was at the city library, because it’s quieter than the school library,” Sakura continued, with a glare at the interruption. “And there was a cute guy who was sitting at the table next to me. And he had a pug hidden in his backpack that he kept feeding treats to.”

“What did he look like?” Naruto demanded.

“Who the hell brings a pug to a library?” Sasuke was smirking in spite of his derision.

Sakura decided to focus on Naruto’s question, leaning her chin into her palm as she sighed. “He was older. Messy silver hair, dark eyes. Hot. He was wearing a blue sweater and jeans.”

“Nice ass?” Naruto asked, brows raised.

“I saw it when he first sat down,” Sakura said conspiratorially. “It was phenomenal.”

Naruto grinned. “So, he’s got a great ass, and he’s nice to animals. That’s totally enough to bang somebody. You should bang him.”

Sasuke rolled his eyes, but nonetheless added, “Use a condom.” He punctuated the command by pulling his phone out of his pocket and checking out of the conversation.

“I don’t even know who he is!” Sakura protested, ignoring the condom part for the time being. “I went to use the bathroom, and when I came back out, he was gone.”

“So, find him!” Naruto shot back. “Love requires action, Sakura!”

“Who said anything about love?”

“Getting laid requires action, Sakura!” Naruto said, without missing a beat. “Come on, you need to get laid. This is going to be your last chance before school starts up again.”

He wasn’t wrong. Being so focused on finishing her undergrad so she could move on to med school had made her social life pretty boring. She could use a little… fun. “Fine. How am I supposed to find him?” Sakura asked, throwing her hands up in the air.

“You could always try the Missed Connections page on the Fire Country Daily site,” Sasuke offered, now only half paying attention as he scrolled his phone.

Gasping dramatically, Naruto grabbed Sasuke’s shoulder and shook it. “That’s a great idea!” Turning to Sakura, he practically had hearts in his eyes as he said, “That would be so romantic.”

“Do people ever actually answer those?” Sakura asked, wrinkling her nose. Fire Country Daily was one of Konoha’s most popular newspapers, that was true, but who actually paid attention to the Missed Connections section? Other than Sasuke, apparently.

“You’ll never know unless you try,” Sasuke pointed out, completely unfazed by the way Naruto was now snuggling up to him. “What do you have to lose?”

“I’m probably just going to get a bunch of replies from creeps,” Sakura grumbled, even as she pulled her laptop out of her bag and opened it, waiting for it to log onto the university’s wi-fi.

“This is going to be so much fun!” Naruto yelled, making Sakura flinch slightly at his volume.

Sasuke was too used to it to react, and instead he smirked at Sakura again. “Of course, being in a relationship has its downsides. Like the decibel level. Maybe you should rethink this plan.”

“Too late, I’m already pulling up the Daily’s page,” Sakura said, feeling like maybe she was going crazy. This was the dumbest thing she had ever done for a guy, for sure. “So… what should I type?”

Naruto leaned toward her, blue eyes sparkling as he grabbed her laptop and pulled it toward him. “Well, for starters, we’re definitely mentioning his ass.”

It was the soft buzz of his phone vibrating that pulled Kakashi into the waking world the next morning after his library excursion. Opening one eye, he glared at the offending device on the bed next to him.

He had only days left before the new semester started, and he’d been up late the night before finally finishing his lesson plans after getting kicked out of the library. He’d been working as a literature professor at Konoha University for years now, and many of his lesson plans were already prepared, but he had picked up a freshman comp class that required a completely new syllabus. It had been close to 3:00 a.m. when he’d finally closed his laptop last night. He’d been really looking forward to sleeping in.

Whoever was waking him up early enough for the light to be barely coming in through his windows was definitely going on his shit list.

Reaching out, Kakashi grabbed the phone and brought it up to his face as he yawned. On the screen was a notification from Genma, written in the broken texting-English that Kakashi was sure Genma used just to annoy him.

Genma: this u? lol

Frowning slightly, Kakashi swiped open his phone and pulled up the text. It had a link to the Fire Country Daily site attached. When Kakashi clicked on it, it brought him to a page with a header that said Missed Connections. Scrolling down, Kakashi read the post Genma had been so eager to send him.

Missed Connection: Konoha City Library. You were the guy with the messy silver hair and great ass who was feeding treats to a pug in a backpack. I was the girl at the table next to yours that you smiled at. I went to the bathroom, and you left before I could ask your name.

Kakashi blinked, his mind immediately filled with images of a pretty face and very pink hair. He’d definitely regretted getting kicked out of the library before he could talk to her, but he never imagined she’d try to reach out this way. His phone buzzed in his hand, interrupting his thoughts.

Genma: well?

Kakashi sighed and began to type back.

Kakashi: Yeah, I think it’s me.
Genma: then you better get on it, romeo

Genma’s text was followed by a string of impressively lewd emojis, and Kakashi let out a huff of laughter. Normally he didn’t like to encourage Genma by laughing at his jokes, but since he wasn’t around to get a swelled head about it, Kakashi indulged himself.

Finally sliding out of bed, he clicked off his phone and shoved it into the pocket of his pajama pants. Pulling a worn Konoha U shirt over his head, he headed into the kitchen while smothering another yawn. He did not, at all, think about a pretty pink-haired girl who wanted to meet up with him. That was for after coffee.

Roughly ten minutes later, Kakashi was sitting in his small kitchen nook and taking a sip of his coffee, and that’s when his ability to problem solve finally came online. And he definitely had a problem to solve—for example, what the fuck was he going to write back? That was what he was supposed to do, right?

Writing a simple message would be easy for somebody who taught literature and creative writing classes for a living, right? He was just going to wing it.

Pulling his phone out of his pocket, Kakashi pulled up the page again, this time clicking on the link to reply to the post. Three fields came up: one for a name, one for an email where he could be reached, and one for him to leave a message. He put in his first name and then used his personal email instead of his university one. When he got to the message field, he stared at it for a long moment before beginning to type again.

Hi. I think I’m the one you’re writing about. My name is Kakashi. So you know it was really me: you have bright pink hair and pretty green eyes. I left before you came back out because I got kicked out of the library for having a non-service dog with me, so I’m kind of a badass criminal. If that’s okay with you, maybe we could hang out sometime.

Before he could think too hard about how dorky his message was, he added his phone number to the bottom of it, and then pressed send. And then, there was nothing to do but wait.

Feeling a warm weight on his foot, Kakashi reached down and patted Pakkun’s head. Gently shoving him off of his foot, Kakashi stood and carried his coffee toward the second bedroom he had turned into an office. He might as well get some work done while waiting to see if Mysterious Pink Library Girl texted him.

“He sent me a message!” Sakura exclaimed breathlessly into the phone. “His name is Kakashi!”

On the other end of the line, Naruto shrieked, “HE SENT HER A MESSAGE!” even though he had her on speaker. Sakura could imagine Sasuke’s uninterested look. “What did he say?” Naruto demanded.

Sakura quickly read Kakashi’s message out loud. She had gotten a number of responses to her missed connection post, including an especially bold one asking her for pictures of her feet, but she had had no doubt that Kakashi was the one she was looking for. The part about being a badass criminal had surprised a giggle out of her. Which, of course, only built her attraction to him.

“What a dork,” came Sasuke’s voice in the background.

“Shut up! I think it’s cute,” Naruto said.

“What should I say to him?” Sakura asked, biting her lip.

“Well, first you should start out—” Naruto began, but he was cut off as Sasuke took the phone.

“Sakura, it’s me,” Sasuke said. “Don’t listen to Naruto, he’s horrible at flirting. So am I. You need to do this part yourself.” There was a pause, and then—because Sasuke was secretly as nosey as Naruto was—he added, “Let us know how it goes.”

There was a noise of protest from Naruto in the background right before the call cut off. Sakura let out a huff. Sasuke was so unhelpful sometimes. Still, he was probably right—she needed to do this herself. Besides, she wasn’t really sure she wanted to take flirting advice from two of the biggest idiots she knew, anyway.

Holding her phone up, she pulled up her email app to see Kakashi’s phone number again. Adding the number to her contacts, she opened a new text and started to type, before suddenly blurting out “Wait!” to the empty room.

What was she thinking? The message had just come through. She couldn’t text him less than five minutes after he sent his message. He would probably think she was some… psycho stalker, or something.

She needed to kill some time. As she usually did when she needed to kill time, she went into the kitchen, assessed the situation, and decided that she needed something sweet. She had the ingredients for a batch of simple sugar cookies, and fifteen minutes later, she was sliding a cookie sheet full of raw dough balls into the oven to cook.

“Okay,” she whispered to herself as she washed and dried her hands. She could do this. No pressure. He was a dork—Sasuke had said so. He wasn’t scary. She could handle him.

Grabbing her phone off of the counter, Sakura moved into her living room, plopping down on her brick red couch. Tucking her legs under her, she nestled into the soft cushions, pulling up her text app again.

Sakura: Hi, this is Sakura. I’m the one who posted the missed connection

She started to type something else several times (“I’m into criminals” and “Nice ass” were both considered and rejected), but she ultimately let the first text stand on its own. Desperate for something to do, she quickly navigated to her email, her social media, and her alarm app in rapid succession. Anything to keep from admitting that she was impatiently waiting for him to text her back. When her phone vibrated in her hands, her breath caught in her throat.

Kakashi: Hi Sakura. Your name suits you. Glad my criminal record didn’t scare you off.

She broke into a smile and began typing in response, having already forgotten her earlier worries about appearing too eager.

Sakura: I get that a lot. I’m still not sure about the criminal part. Does that make your dog your accomplice?
Kakashi: He’s more like a snitch. I would’ve gotten away with it if he hadn’t barked at the librarian. His name is Pakkun, and he’s too friendly for his own good.
Sakura: What made you want to bring a pug to a library, anyway?
Kakashi: When you really think about it, wouldn’t every library be better with a pug in it?
Sakura: Good point. I can’t find a single flaw in your logic
Kakashi: See, I knew I liked you :)

Sakura was just grinning like an idiot at that point, her thumbs flying over the keyboard as they chatted. Maybe it was because it was just text and therefore less intimidating, but it was easy to talk to Kakashi. In fact, she got so into chatting with him, bantering about whether or not it was the next logical step to combine dog shelters with libraries, and then derailing completely to talk about their favorite dog movies, that she completely forgot about her cookies until the smell of something burning hit her nose.

“Shit!” Jumping up, she dropped her phone on the couch and bolted into the kitchen. The cookies, unfortunately, had been reduced to something resembling small hockey pucks, and there was no saving them. Still, she was riding so high on cute guy chemicals that, instead of getting mad that her cookies were ruined, she took a picture of her holding one up and pouting—and sent it to Kakashi.

Sakura: You and Pakkun distracted me too much, and I burned my cookies
Kakashi: We’re sorry :(

The picture that came in was of him holding Pakkun and both of them giving the camera big, wet, puppy dog eyes. Except Kakashi’s had little crinkles at the corners, and his mouth had a crooked upward hitch to it that told her that he wasn’t very sorry. He was charming—even more charming than she’d initially thought. Before she could reply to the picture, another text came through.

Kakashi: Sounds like somebody needs to buy you dessert. There’s a cupcake shop right by the library. Would you like to meet up?

Sakura chewed on her bottom lip. Naruto would tell her that she needed to stop messing around and just get laid, already. Sasuke would insist he didn’t care but secretly agree with Naruto. With them in her head, she was tempted to tell Kakashi to grab some cupcakes and bring them to her place. But—even though she knew Naruto and Sasuke would make fun of her for not knowing how to hook up with someone—she wasn’t sure she was quite ready for that yet. Meeting at a cupcake shop sounded like a better first step.

Sakura: Sounds fun! Send me the address and I’ll meet you there in half an hour?

Kakashi responded by dropping the location and following it with “It’s a date,” which is what finally made it real to Sakura. Letting out a squeak that was half nerves and half excitement, she dropped her phone on the couch beside her and bolted up, beelining into her room.

Why had she told him half an hour? That was hardly any time at all! Sakura threw her closet doors open and began to sort through her available clean clothes. She landed on an outfit that Ino had bought for her that she had yet to wear: a flowery pink wrap skirt with a white camisole top. She thought it was appropriate for what she was considering this to really be: Kakashi’s interview to get laid.

Tying on some strappy sandals, Sakura looked at herself in the mirror over her dresser. It was going to take fifteen minutes to get there, and she wanted to leave a little early in case there was traffic, so she didn’t have time to put on a face full of makeup. She didn’t really want to, either. Instead, she put on a little bit of mascara and her favorite strawberry-flavored lip gloss. Fluffing her hair with her fingers, she mentally declared herself to be looking good enough to meet a cute guy.

Leaving her bedroom, she took a minute to scrape her hockey puck cookies into the garbage, and then she grabbed her purse with a jittery hand and left for the cupcake shop.

Kakashi was late. This was typical. What was not typical was how stressed he was about being late. Going on a date usually didn’t have this effect on him.

Well, that wasn’t exactly true. Mostly because he didn’t go on dates. It had been a while since he’d even grabbed a drink with somebody, much less asked somebody to a cupcake shop—he hated sweets. What the hell had gotten into him?

All he knew was that somewhere between the text banter and Sakura sending the picture of her pouting with the burned cookie, he had decided he should get to know her better. No, he had decided that he had to get to know her better. And he was willing to do whatever it took to secure her interest, up to and including luring her to a cupcake shop.

A cupcake shop whose parking lot he was pulling his car into—ten minutes late. He screeched his way into a parking space and then headed into the shop while trying to look as nonchalant as possible. He was pretty sure he was failing, but it wouldn’t do to show just how flustered he was by a pretty girl who couldn’t bake cookies.

Sakura was sitting at a table by the window with her chin in her hand, looking gorgeous, and when she saw him she lifted her head and smiled. “You’re late,” she accused, though she didn’t look that mad about it.

“I was debating whether I should bring Pakkun,” Kakashi lied. “But I decided I didn’t want him to outshine me.”

She nodded, smiling. “Smart strategy.”

He smiled back. “Do you want a cupcake? Some coffee?” He gestured to the counter where a cheerful-looking worker was ready to take their order.

“That sounds good,” Sakura said, standing and following him to the counter. Leaning over, she looked through the glass at all the different flavors, and then announced, “The pistachio ones look good!”

Kakashi looked at the patiently waiting cashier and said, “One pistachio cupcake.” He raised his brows at Sakura. “Anything else?”

“Coffee, please.”

“And two coffees.”

“Don’t you want a cupcake?” Sakura asked, tilting her head slightly as she looked at him.

“Just coffee is good for me right now.” Kakashi paid for the cupcake and coffees. He considered telling her that he was known for being cheap, and therefore should get some sort of special prize for his generosity, but another part of his brain told him to keep his mouth shut. It was the same part of his brain that sometimes wisely convinced him to ignore his friend Gai’s stupid teaching challenges, so he decided to listen to it.

After he paid, the two of them shuffled with their coffees over to the coffee station. Kakashi only put his down long enough to add a lid, and then he watched in amusement as Sakura added four creams and three sugars to hers. She really did like sugar—she seemed to be fueled by it, like a hummingbird.

As Sakura stirred her coffee, she gave him a defensive look and said, “What?”

“Nothing,” Kakashi assured her, turning away so she wouldn’t see him smiling. It wasn’t like he could just tell her that he’d been mentally comparing her to a cute, buzzy little bird.

Kakashi led them back to the table that Sakura had been sitting at when he came in. As they settled into their chairs across from each other, Sakura said, “Thanks for inviting me out. And for replying to the missed connections post, really. My friend wrote most of it,” she admitted. “I’m not very good at making the first move.”

The embarrassed look on her face was extremely charming. Kakashi was liking her more by the minute. He needed to find out more about her. “What do you do?”

“Honestly?” she said. “I don’t really want to talk about that. Right now, I’d rather focus on fun things—like cupcakes.”

That was interesting. It was unclear whether she just needed a break from talking about her professional life, or if she was just trying to keep things impersonal. For all Kakashi knew, they were there because she just really wanted a hookup and wasn’t that good at getting her point across. But he decided it didn’t really matter if she wanted to date him or just fuck him. Either way, he was game. “Okay. So, you like dogs? Or just pugs that have been snuck into libraries?”

A bright smile spread over her face. “I like dogs. Cats, too. I was actually thinking about getting a cat. I’m not sure I’m home often enough for a dog, but I think a cat might be perfect. Do you like them?”

“I like some of them,” he answered. “I prefer to be the most aloof thing in the room.”

She laughed. “You don’t seem that aloof to me.”

“Maybe I’m just trying to impress you,” he said, smiling.

“Oh, then you definitely should’ve brought Pakkun,” she teased back. Finally seeming to remember her cupcake, she lifted it, peeled back the wrapper, and took a bite. The second it hit her mouth she let out a moan. “Oh, this is so good.”

Kakashi struggled to keep his mind focused on things that were safe to think about in a cupcake shop, and not on the other contexts he would like to make her moan in. It wasn’t fair, really—he’d been having completely innocent thoughts, and she had no business making noises like that. When the tip of her tongue emerged to pass over her lower lip, his mouth went dry.

Clearing his throat, he attempted to sound calm as he said, “I’m glad that you like it.”

Something in his voice must have given him away, because there was a pretty pink flush to her cheeks now as she focused those beautiful green eyes on him, almost bashful as she asked, “Do you want to try it? The frosting is amazing.”

I wouldn’t mind licking it off of you, his now thoroughly distracted brain helpfully suggested. Luckily, the more powerful rational side of his brain prevented him from saying that. Instead, he said, “How can I turn down an offer like that?”

She offered him the cupcake, and he took it, giving it what he was sure was a dubious look before taking a small bite of it. The sugar that exploded on his tongue was strong enough to make his teeth hurt, and as he chewed, he attempted to find something to say that wasn’t ‘how the hell can you eat this?’

Sakura was watching him shrewdly. “You don’t like sweets, do you?”

He swallowed, wincing slightly. “Not really.”

To his surprise, she laughed again. “Well, it was really sweet of you to ask me to a cupcake shop when you don’t even like cupcakes. And as you’ve already observed, I really like sweet things.”

It was cheesy, but it made him feel better. He washed the overwhelming sweetness out of his mouth with a gulp of his black coffee before saying, “I’m glad it didn’t put you off.” Picking the cupcake back up, he passed it back to her, wondering if he was the only one who felt the electricity as their fingers brushed.

As Sakura ate her cupcake and they both drank their coffee, they chatted about insignificant things. Kakashi found it easy to talk to her, which was a welcome surprise—who would’ve thought a missed connection from the library, of all things, would lead to a date where he got to enjoy the sight of a very beautiful woman eating something she was clearly enjoying.

He still wasn’t sure whether Sakura was looking for something brief, or more longterm. But when he felt her toe underneath the table, touching his ankle and then trailing up the inside of his calf, his whole body got warmer. She looked at him through her lashes and smiled, and Kakashi had to suppress a groan.

Whether she wanted to date or just hook up with him, he was one hundred percent on board.

But the next thing Kakashi knew, Sakura was stepping away to take a call, and when she came back she had a frown on her face. “I have to go.”

Kakashi stood up. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah,” she sighed. “I just had… something… pop up that I need to take care of.” Before Kakashi could think too much about that, she asked, “Walk me to my car?”

Kakashi wordlessly gestured toward the door, following her to it and reaching past her to push it open. His brief closeness to her brought with it the scent of strawberries, because of course she smelled edible.

He followed her to cute little silver bug with a few dents in it. She turned when she reached the driver door. “I’d really like to see you again.”

Kakashi stopped, leaving space between them. “Oh yeah?”

“Yeah.” She was chewing on her lip—and leaning a bit closer.

“That’s nice,” Kakashi said blandly, just to see her reaction. He’d been so nice to her so far; he needed to test her a little.

Sakura pouted and let out a little huff, though her eyes held a mischievous twinkle. “You’re supposed to say you want to see me, too.”

This time, he was the one who got a little closer. “I do want to see you again. Depending.”

“Depending on what?” She looked up at him, wrinkling her nose in a way that was much cuter than he was prepared for.

Smiling on the tail of that thought, Kakashi lifted his hand to her cheek. “On how this goes.”

He tilted her chin up as he lowered his head, pausing just before his lips touched hers. He waited just long enough to hear her little tremulous inhalation, and then he closed the distance between them, reveling in the bolt of heat that sang through his body the moment they kissed. They both held the kiss for a long moment, and then Sakura hummed softly against his mouth and parted her lips. Kakashi happily took the invitation, letting his tongue sweep against hers.

This time, the taste of sweet pistachio was much better than before.

Pulling her lower lip between his, Kakashi nibbled on it, just like he’d wanted when he’d watched her bite it. Then he released it, brushing her lips softly one last time.

When he pulled back, her eyes slowly fluttered open, and her pupils were blown wide. “How did it go?” she asked, sounding like she needed to catch her breath.

He passed the pad of his thumb over her lower lip, which was a darker pink than it had been before he’d kissed her. “Hold on a second.” Raising his other hand, he held her face between his hands and kissed her again.

The second time he kissed her, he didn’t hold back. That first kiss had been an introduction—this one was what came next, a wordless statement of his intentions.

And his intentions were to blow her away.

He dropped his hands to her waist and pressed his body into hers, walking her back until she was sandwiched between him and her car. She whimpered against his mouth, reaching up to wind her arms around his neck, and he hummed in response as he pulled her against him. He didn’t hesitate for a minute to push his luck, pressing his knee between her thighs, loving the little sound she made in her throat as she grinded up against him. Perfect.

She was just perfect.

He didn’t stop kissing her until she was arching up against him, and he stroked her tongue one final time with his before releasing her. Rocking back on his heels a bit, he put some distance between them before letting out a laugh and saying, “Oh yeah, I definitely want to see you again.”

Sakura was all kiss-bruised lips and dazzling green eyes as she beamed at him and said, “I’ll text you later. When I’m done. With my thing.” She gave a dizzy little giggle as she got into her car, and Kakashi smiled at the sound, secure in his knowledge that he had kissed her thoroughly. Very thoroughly.

And as he stood back and watched her drive out of the parking lot, he was sure of one thing: he was definitely going to do whatever he could to make that happen again.
