Chapter Text
“You guys would not believe what Luz tried to do today!” Amity slammed her tray of food down on the cafeteria table her friends were sitting at. The cafeteria was noisy and crowded, as this was a common time for the other university students to be taking their lunch. Their little group counted themselves lucky that they were able to secure a relatively clean table near the edge of the cafeteria, away from most of the crowds.
“Well hello to you too,” Vee deadpanned as she and Willow fixed Amity with the look™, the one that only friends who have had to listen to their friend gush about their girlfriend constantly could give. They knew whatever was about to spill from the youngest Blight’s mouth couldn’t be stopped, no matter what they said or did, and so, they resigned themselves to listening, looking forward to the inevitable teasing that they would get to dish out.
Amity who did not seem to notice the sarcasm, or looks her friends gave her and continued on, “so I decided to swing by our apartment after class…”

Amity sighed as she landed outside her apartment, Ghost returning to her cat form and hopping onto Amity’s shoulder for her own ride. Having to deal with her mother again first thing this morning put a damper on her entire day. When would that woman learn that she couldn’t control Amity anymore, Titan some people really couldn’t take a hint. Then, after that, she had to deal with a pop quiz in her Isles’ History 102 test and how in the name of the Titan is she supposed to remember all these dates and names of random dead people? She’s here to study Abomination Engineering! Not Phidelious Fantsbrook who carved the first neo-classical bannister! And to top it all off Luz hasn’t even bothered to text her at all today! The nerve of that human, she was gonna make sure she knew just how upset she was when she saw her again.
Ghost meowed from her shoulder, drawing her from her thoughts as she unlocked their front door. “Yeah, yeah I’ll get you some-”
Amity stopped suddenly, she could faintly make out voices coming from deeper in her apartment. It couldn’t be Willow or Vee, they both had classes during this block. Quietly she growled, quickly commanding Ghost to return to her palisman form, and summoning a large mass of abomination goop into a spiked gauntlet on her other hand. She crept deeper into her apartment, down the hall with all the bedrooms, and stopping in front of her door. The voices had stopped, but she could faintly make out the sounds of someone rummaging through her things, her things! Well, if some strangers had decided they wanted to die painfully, who was she to deny them?
Without wasting another second Amity burst into her room. Using Ghost’s magic she sent a wave of abomination goo to the nearest intruder, the goo binding them in goo with a cute little squeak. Without sparing that intruder a glance she charged the second one, slamming her gauntlet into their back and sending them careening into the opposite wall, but before she could press her advantage a loud “WEH!” sent her flying back into her doorway, she had to brace herself with some abomination goo to keep herself from being blown clearly out of her room.
With the distance between herself and the intruders, and the brief pause, she finally took stock of everyone in the room. The intruder that knocked her back was… Luz’s pet thing? King, his name was King. He was standing on all fours, the hairs on his back raised up like a cats. And Intruder Two who was slowly standing up on the other side of the room was none other than Eda “The Owl Lady” herself. She must have really been focused if she didn’t even notice the woman’s mane of wild gray hair. And so that must mean… Yup, rolling around on the ground struggling against her abomi-bines was none other than the human herself.
The Owl Lady stood up, cracking her back with a groan, “damn Boots, you pack quite the punch, doncha. Reminds me of myself back in my gory days! Ha!” She snorted, laughing at herself.
Amity, unamused, responded “What, in the name of the Titan, are you three doing here?”
“Hmm, well, you see… DISTRACTION SPELL!” Amity had but a moment to dodge a dirty old sock from smacking her in the face. By the time she focused back on the Owl Lady she was already outside of her open window, on her palisman, with King under her arm. “I think it would be better to let the master mind explain that. I’d rather avoid all that, kay? Thanks, byeeeeeeeeeeeeee.” And without waiting for a response Eda was flying off in the other direction, cackling as she disappeared.
A beat of silence followed, Amity desperately trying to gather her wits, dealing with the Owl Lady, even if only for five seconds was always exhausting. How in the name of the Titan did she even get outside so fast? But, eventually, she rounded on the human herself. “Human,” Amity started, using her magic to lift the bound human up to face her, “start explaining.” With a twirl of her finger, the goo covering her mouth melted away.
“Hehehe, heeey Ames, fancy meeting you here!” Amity responded by tightening the bonds. “Ow, ow ow, hehe, you know this is pretty hot!”
Amity felt heat rising to her cheeks, “ human! If you don’t answer my question I’m going to toss you out of the window and burn your stupid little beanie!”
“Alright, alright! Geez! No need to hurt the merchandise gurl!”
“Human…” Amity tried to use her most threatening, deadliest tone, “ what are you doing here? ”
The human laughed sheepishly. “Well, you see, you remember how you made that beautiful drawing of me as an otter?” Amity didn’t need reminding, Luz had been begging her to give it to her ever since she drew the damned thing, needless to say it was stashed securely away behind her bed’s headboard, right behind her pillow. “Weeell, since you wouldn’t give it to me… I… maaaay have been trying to… huh, heist it.”
Amity took another moment to process.
“So…” Amity used her magic to lift the human off her feet, so that Luz was eye level with her. “You decided to break into my room…”
“Yup!” The human sounded almost proud when she responded.
“Enlist the Owl Lady’s help to go through my things…” Amity sent the human floating backwards
“Well, hehe, she was just supposed to be on lookout…”
“All in order to steal something I drew for class?” The human's legs hit the bed and Amity sent her falling back with a dull thud.
“Well, hehe, it almost sounds kinda bad when you put it like that…” a blush was creeping up the human's cheeks.
Amity glared down at her, “Oh, human , you have no idea how much trouble you’re in.” Amity leaned forward, picking up the bound human by the front of her shirt. “But I’ll be sure to make this a valuable learning opportunity.”
Luz, speechless, gulped.

“And then…” Amity giggled, “she said…” Amity giggled again, “she said, ‘yowza wowza,’ yowza wowza. ” Amity giggled yet again. Her story finished, Amity finally looked at two of her best friends/roommates, Vee had her head in her hands, some color faintly visible on her face, and Willow had her fixed with a deadpan look. “What?”
“First of all,” Willow started, “damn you’ve got it bad. Second of all, sweetheart, way too much information.”
“Wha- What are you talking-”
“ And third of all ,” Willow interrupted, “you two have been dating for awhile now, when are you going to drop this whole ‘bad girl’ act you’ve got going on?”
“ Willow!” Amity practically shouted, “I can’t do that! Luz is just so… So… She’s just so cool , and chill, and… and… She’s just so ugh! ” Amity slapped her hands to her face, mirroring Vee, letting her head fall down onto the table, “She’ll think I’m a total loser if she sees how… how…”
“How much of a simp you are?”
“Shut up…” Amity mumbled.
Willow chuckled, and munched on a french fry as her two friends slowly rebooted. Vee was the first to recover, taking a deep breath as the red slowly left her face and she cleared her throat. “I, uh… I’m just gonna pretend I didn’t hear that last part… But uh, I think she’s right Amity, why don’t you just give her the drawing? You know she’ll love you no matter how much of a, uh, simp you are.”
“Vee, not you too” Amity rolled her head back and forth on the table, “I’m trying okay! It’s just… Everytime I try, I just get so… I don’t know! Nervous! I can’t even look her in the eyes! I just…. Ughhhh.” Amity mumbled something the other two couldn’t hear.
“Come again?” Willow asked
She turned her head to look at her friends from the table, “I said, I haven’t even been able to tell her I love her yet.”
“Yeah that is pretty bad.” Vee nodded
“Isn’t she constantly telling you she loves you? What’s so hard about saying it back?”
“I don’t know! I just can’t, okay!?” Amity groaned as she rolled her head on the table again.
“You wanna know what I think?” Willow smirked at her spiraling friend.
“No, but you’re gonna tell me anyway.”
Willow grinned at her friend's response before continuing, “I think you just need to rip the healing patch off. Don’t just tell her you love her, show her. A big, grand, romantic, display of affection.”
“Yeah! That’s perfect! She’ll absolutely love something like that!”
Amity groaned, “I don’t know you guys. What could I even do? Luz is the big romantic gestures type… And I’m just…” Amity stops and gestures at herself, cheek down on a dirty cafeteria, tray of barely touched cheap cafeteria food forgotten off to the side.
“Hmm, good point,” Vee sagely agrees.
“Listen Blight, this is something that’s supposed to come from the heart. We can’t help you here, this is something you gotta figure out for yourself. Just think about it, what’s something that Luz would love more than anything in the world? Besides you I mean.”
Amity groaned and banged her forehead against the table once again.
.·:*¨¨* ≈☆≈ *¨¨*:·.
Eda sat back on her recliner, with King curled up in her lap. Her stand was closed for the day and Raine would be home soon enough, nothing left to do in the day but sit back, relax, and unwind. She took a sip from some freshly butchered apple blood and sighed, “wow, a surprisingly peaceful domestic moment… When will it be ruined?”
Suddenly her front door flew open with a bang, “Eeeeeeeeedaaaaa! Eda Eda Eda!” Luz came twirling into her living room, hopping over her sofa and landing face first on the rug in front of Eda, her yellow messenger bag falling away to her side.
“And there it is.”
“Eda! I need your help! I think Amity’s really really really mad at me, andshe’sbarelysaidtwowordstomeinweeksandwhatifshewantstobreakupwithmeIdontknowwhattodo!”
“Woa kiddo slow your scroll here, Bossy Boots is mad at you?”
Luz sat up on the floor in front of Eda, a sad little pout on her face. “Mhm… She’s been locking herself up in her apartment for weeks, she barely talks to me in class, and worst of all,” she reaches into her bag and pulls o a scroll case. “Today, I was leaving class when Skara approached me and gave me this .” Luz popped open the case and out slid a large rolled up paper, she handed it over to Eda who slowly unfurled it, actually getting kinda nervous. What nefarious, dastardly, wicked curses did Boot’s cook up? She uncurled the paper and upon it was… a chubby otter laying on it’s side, the vague outline of a couch dominating the background with a pot of flowers next to it, it had a little otterish smirk on its face and a red beanie that had become a signature part of Luz’s look over the last few years.
“... Sorry kid I don’t get it? Isn’t this the picture you wanted?”
“Yeah but, look at the back.” Luz said with dread in her voice.
Eda turned the drawing around and on the back were the words “MEEt me iN THe aRT rooM toNiGHt.” stuck onto the back with clippings from some magazine. Beneath it Boots had signed her name in an elegant little scrawl that really didn’t match the ransom note looking message above it. “Well kid, I gotta admit, this does look oddly ominous, especially for the littlest Blight. What are you gonna do about it?”
“I don’t know! It’s gotta be bad right? Willow and Vee won’t even tell me what’s going on! Oh god, what if she really is gonna kill me this time!? Or even worse… Break up with me!?” Luz dramatically fell backwards to lay on the floor with a loud groan. “What should I dooooo Eda? I don’t know what I’d do if she broke up with me!”
Eda sighed, gently stroking King’s back as she contemplated Luz’s silly little drama. On the one hand Amity did have this ice cold exterior she liked to put on. Murder in some random art room wasn’t necessarily off the table for her. But, on the other hand, even Eda could see how much Boots adored her kid, the blushing, the secret longing glances, it was all too obvious how deep they had fallen for each other. It was sickening, in fact.
“Listen kid, I can’t pretend to get the… whatever you two have going on…” Luz looked up at Eda as she spoke, “but what I do know is, Mittens always seemed smittens, HA” she snorted at her own joke before continuing on, “...with you. If she is mad at you then all you have to do is apologize and promise to never do what pissed her off again. And you gotta mean it , kid. Got it?”
Luz sat back up, contemplating Eda’s words. Sure, what she said made sense, she knew in her heart that she what she had with Amity was special, but still, there was that nagging part of her brain that knew she royaley fucked up with that whole heist thing, and that that wasn’t a cool thing for her to do. But still! She apologized for that already! Many, many times! And Amity didn’t seem that mad at the time… Even if she was really aggressive when they were-
“Nope! Nope! Okay no no no,” oh, whoops, was she thinking out loud again? Eda stood up, gently placing King from her lap onto the recliner she was sitting on. King merely grumbled slightly before curling back up and immediately falling back asleep again. “Listen kid, you might be technically an adult but you’re still my kid, and I definitely do not want to hear about what you two get up to when you’re alone.” Owlbert popped out from Eda’s mane of hair, turning into his staff form. Eda grabbed her staff and tapped it on the floor, his eyes glowing yellow. Luz found herself being lifted off her feet and gently levitated back towards the door. She should probably be getting used to this by now. “Listen kid, just go talk to your girl, and please spare me the gory details.” The door swung open as Luz glided gently through the threshold. “Anyway, always lovely seeing you kid, make sure to stop by again soon, have fun tonight! Thanks! Byeeeeeeeee!” Eda slammed the door shut as Luz dropped down to the ground on her butt, who sat there in silence for a second, still contemplating Eda’s words.
“Uh…” A new voice broke the silence, Luz turned to see Eda’s partner Raine, their fox palisman approaching Luz and nuzzling into her side. “Do I even want to know?”

Amity paced back and forth in the isolated art room. This was a bad idea, this was such a bad idea. Why did she let Willow and Vee convince her to do this? And then she had to go and get carried away, just because the-
She was forced from her thoughts by a sudden knocking on the door. Shit, she was here early, when in the name of the Titan did Luz ever arrive early. She took one last glance to double check that everything was in order, nope, not even a hair out of place. So, she quickly hid behind the door and with a quick twirl of her finger, the door popped open and slowly slid open.
𓆩♡𓆪
The door creaked open slowly, certainly not helping the ominous pool of dread that was building in Luz’s gut. She cautiously entered the room, pushing the door open until it bounced gently off the wall. Her eyes darted across the room, not immediately finding her witch. Instead, her eyes fell upon the mahogany couch she had spent some time reclining on while Amity drew her not too long ago. She pulled out the drawing to double check, and yup, that was certainly what she was seeing.
There, matching the drawing, laying on its side, was a chubby otter Luz. It had a matching otterish smirk on its face and was wearing Luz’s signature red beanie and green bomber jacket too, they looked like they were made just for the little plush. Luz reached down to stroke the long, chubby tale and realized how soft and comfortable the fabric was.
“That’s mine.” Suddenly, Amity’s voice came from behind her. Luz squeaked and twirled around. She finally found Amity, standing just behind the doorway, her face was already a bright red, and her hair…
“It’s different…”
“Hm? Oh… Yeah… I’ve been meaning to change it… And well, I wanted to match.” Amity awkwardly played with her newly cut and dyed lavender hair. “Em helped me dye it earlier.”
Luz could feel heat rushing to her face, her and she muttered, “cómo sigues poniendo más hermosa?”
Amity’s face seemed to just get redder and redder and she spoke awkwardly, “eres la… hermosa…”
Luz’s brain stalled when Amity replied, did she just call her beautiful… Wait, did Amity just speak Spanish!? Amity just spoke Spanish! “When did you learn Spanish?” She blurted out
“Oh… Uh… Yeah, Gus gave me this human book...”
There was a pause between them as Amity’s sentence petered out... “What’s all this for?” Luz suddenly asked.
Amity seemed startled for a second, not expecting the question. “Well… I wanted to show you, uh…” her face was going redder by the second, “how much you mean to me… So I wanted to tell you…” She paused again and took a deep breath. “Te amo mucho, luz de mi vida, mi hermosa batata.”
Luz was rendered completely speechless, of all the scenarios that played out in her head, even her best most desperate hopes couldn’t compare to what was happening right in front of her. Amity just said she loved her! In Spanish no less! She called her the light of her life! She called her a beautiful… Sweet potato? Well okay that one was a bit weird! But hoooooooly Titan she was being so openly sweet, and loving, and she said she loved her, in Spanish!
Amity took advantage of Luz being rendered inert, both their faces were brilliant shades of red at this point. So Amity quickly walked past Luz to sit on the couch and wrap her arms around the otter and snuggled herself into it. “Originally… I was going to make a paper mache version of the drawing for you to keep but… well, Willow said I couldn’t throw away our couch to make space for it, so I had to come up with something else… So I made this little one for you… But um…”
Amity’s eyes locked onto Luz who was standing there, mouth agape, whole face aflame as she watched Amity snuggle into the otter Luz. A wave of confidence surged through Amity, she wasn’t used to being able to knock Luz off her feet like this, it was a nice feeling. She smirked, and rubbed her cheek into the plush’s face, and pressed on, “this one’s mine. She’s so cute and comfy… So, I can’t give her up… So I had to make a backup… for you.” Amity’s eyes drifted away from Luz, who followed her gaze to the eeesel next to her.
Sitting on a little stool, with a long thin tail wrapped around one of the legs, was a lavender cat plush. It was sitting in front of the eeesel with a pencil held in one of its paws. It was wearing the same striped white shirt and pink skirt that Amity had worn on that day, and had Amity’s signature bored glare as it stared at the blank canvas.
Luz took a cautious step toward the kitty Amity, reaching forward and picking it up. She gave it a hug, relishing briefly how soft and comfy it was. As she gently stroked its soft plush back she turned back to Amity. “All this, for me?” she said, softly.
Amity stood up, gently placing the otter back on the couch, and slowly approached Luz. She reached forward and placed a hand on Luz’s cheek, gently stroking her thumb across it.
“I know I can be, um, cold… and harsh . But I really wanted to tell you how much you mean to me, and…” Amity’s cheeks were returning to their red again, “I meant what I said. Luz Noceda, light of my life… I love you so so much. I would fight the Titan himself to bring you but a moment's happiness. Please never forget just how much you mean to me.”
Luz stared into Amity’s golden eyes with awe on her face, before a sniffle overtook her and before either of them knew it, she was breaking down into tears. Amity panicked while Luz sobbed into the plush kitten, “Oh no no this is the opposite of what I wanted to happen! Luz! I’m sorry! Please don’t cry! I can, um, if you want-”
“No no, Amity.” Luz sniffled, her face still buried in the kitten, “these are happy tears I promise.” She finally looked back up at Amity, leaving a wet spot on the kittens lilac fur. She smiled warmly at her, despite the tears still running down her face, “I don’t think I’ve ever been happier in my entire life. Amity, you have no idea how much this means to me… I love you too. So, so much.”
“Oh…” was all Amity managed to say before Luz pulled her into a tender, and wet, kiss.
