Chapter Text

Corporal Covell looked around at the small team he had assembled - the best of his men, each with their own strengths and specializations. As expected, they stood at attention, waiting for orders as to what their next mission might be.

“At ease, Gentlemen,” Covell said, watching as they relaxed somewhat. “This upcoming mission is strictly off the record.”

“Off the record, Sir?” Major Bronx asked.

Covell nodded, his expression going somber. “I am certain you are all aware that General Veers is expected to be out of commission for the next few weeks, and that his duties have been distributed amongst your fellow officers.”

Covell looked around him for a moment before continuing in a softer tone. “However, there are many things that our dear General does that are essential for the functioning of this ship, but are not included on the duty roster, and that is where you come in.”

His audience watched him expectantly, although he could see one or two of them already knew what this was about, judging by the microscopic changes in their expressions.

“Firmus Piett has recently been promoted to Admiral of the Fleet,” Covell announced, “and has likely not slept since. I also have it on good authority that he has also suffered a great personal loss. While Naval Affairs are not our own, Firmus Piett is one of us. As such, I am assigning you all to look after him in any way possible. I want his laundry to be done, I want his caf to be refilled, and I want someone there to catch him if he collapses.”

“Is this a covert operation, Sir?” Sergeant Staten asked.

“Correct, Sergeant. We are all aware how stubborn our sailor can be, and I suspect he will try to muddle through this on his own. You are not to let him.”

“What if he resists?” Major Brooklyn put in.

“Then you tell him General Veers would want him to take better care of himself.”

“And that will work?” Private Queens, the newest addition to the team, asked.

“It will, Private. Perhaps it will even encourage him to admit he has feelings for the General, if we are fortunate.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“One other thing,” Covell added. “If and when Admiral Piett comes to visit General Veers, they are not to be disturbed. You are to ensure they have the utmost privacy and that no one knows how frequently Piett is visiting, or what he is saying or doing while he is there. Is that understood?”

There was a chorus of nods, and Covell smiled slightly. “I expect regular reports on the health and wellbeing of our sailor until such time as General Veers can resume his duties. You have the full extent of our resources behind you in your mission, but it must be kept secret. Is that clear?”

His men snapped to attention again.

“Very clear, Sir,” Bronx said. “Admiral Piett is in good hands.”

“Very good,” Covell said. “Dismissed.”
