Work Text:
Colby was asleep in the living room, tucked up in his little fluffy, black blanket dreaming away. He looked so peaceful when Sam and Kat walked in and found him, snapping a few pictures for a laugh and wondering upstairs to their room.
A few hours had past and both Sam and Kat return downstairs to their shared kitchen find Colby still asleep on the huge couch in front of them. Kat mention how Colby would be able to sleep through a hurricane and Sam tells her a story or 2 about when they were back in Kansas at the beginning of their friendship when, during sleepovers, Sam would have to bombard Colby with cushions and stuffed toys to wake him up due to him being an EXTREMELY heavy sleeper. Luckily though, it's become easier over the years and they're at a point now where Sam doesn't even need to shout for Colby to wake up instantly.
As Kat and Sam stand in the kitchen talking, the back door to the garden opens and Stas comes wandering in wrapped up warm in a towel from taking a swim in the pool. She noticed Colby immediately and quietly makes her way over to Sam and Kat in the kitchen, giggling as she almost slips on the laminated floor.
"How long has he been there?" Stas whispers.
"About 3 hours? 3 and a half hours maybe? He could sleep for days..." Sam laughs.
"We should probably wake him, he'll be mad if he messes up his sleep schedule." Kat suggests and she and Stas slowly walks over to the couch, taking one last look at Colby's peaceful face before trying to wake up.
They call his name, shake him lightly, but nothing. He's still completely out. Now to any normal person this would be extremely worrying but Sam has dealt with Colby's heavy sleeping for 10+ years at this point and knows how to wake him up easily. He walks around the kitchen island, stands behind the couch, lightly shakes Colby's arm and calls his name at the same time. Within milliseconds Colby's eyes are open and he's looking around the room confused.
"That's exactly what we did! How come he woke up for you instantly??" Kat says laughing.
"I don't know, I've just had to do this so many times over the years maybe I gained a special power for it. Aw Colbs your hair!" The 3 laugh at Colby's bed head as he sits up and stretches, laughing too as he presses down his hair that was sticking out all over the place.
"Alright, we're having a movie night! And I'm ordering pizza!" Sam announces, receiving cheers and applause.
At this point they were half way through the movie when Kat notices Stas had been on her phone for about 15 minutes now. She taps her leg.
"Hey! no phones remember?! It's getting to the good part!" Kat tells her.
"I was just researching something quickly and I've just found out something adorable." She whispers to Kat but not very quietly as Sam pauses the movie and both he and Colby are now paying attention.
"What's adorable?"
Stas giggles and opens her phone onto the Google tab she'd just been on so she can read it out loud.
"When it comes to heavy sleepers, they may subconsciously associate a particular voice with being awake and aware so even when in a deep sleep, that voice will be able to pull them from they're dreams easier than another person they may not be used to hearing yet." Stas looks at Sam and Colby.
"Sam, Colby's subconscious only wakes up when you call his name cause he's so used to your voice waking him up that it's ingrained in him to wake up the second he hears your voice, no matter how deep he's sleeping. Isn't that cute!?" Sam smiles warmly at Colby who's hiding in his hands.
"I mean I have been waking his ass up almost everyday for the last like, what? 12 years? 12+ years? It makes sense. So that's why he didn't respond to you and Katrina earlier then, cause he literally couldn't hear you?" Sam laughs.
"Yeah and it's like, you break through that barrier that keeps him heavy sleeping and can wake him up easier than anyone else. That's actually adorable!" Colby blushes slightly as he's being talked about, he always gets shy when people talk about how heavy of a sleeper he is, caused his parents nightmares trying to get him up for school through the years.
"Well at least I know for sure now that if we're in a life or death situation and I can't get to your room, all I gotta do is shout for you and you'll be up and ready immediately." Sam giggles, slapping a hand on Colby's shoulder.
"But for real, dude, that's super cool and really cute... We've really been around eachother for so long that you subconscious recognises my damn voice as a wake up alarm! Goes to show how many times I gotta get you up in the morning rather than the other way round." Colby laughs in response and lightly shoves Sam in the side playfully. Stas returns her phone face down on the couch arm and Sam unpauses the movie with Katrina snuggling up under his arm. For the rest of the movie Colby thinks about all the other things that may have evolved or developed over the years because of his friendship with Sam. Hearing this from Stas brings him so much comfort in knowing that Sam is always there.
