The Trouble with Tentacles

Summary:

AU in which Mom is like 3% more evil, and doesn't cure Leela from her tentaclism at the end of Leela and the Genestalk.

Now, the kickass space captain has to come to terms with her newfound inability to do said kicking, among other things.

While the main story is completed, if i have any more ideas that are fun to explore, i will put them out as a collection of little ficlets, disconnected from one another. Chapter 3 is the end of the connected story, though.

Hope you enjoy!

Notes:

(Yes the title is a reference to The Trouble with Tribbles, i couldn't help it okay? I haven't even seen TOS, but the pun was staring me in the face.)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

"What are you talking about?" Fry objected. "I wanna spend my life with you!"

"No you don't." Leela denied, turning away and shuffling half a tentacle's length away. "I mean, look at me!" She demonstratively spread her tentacles out.

"Big deal!" Fry shrugged it off, "looks change. No matter what happens, you'll always be Leela. The woman i love."

Her tentacles drifted down, and in earnest, Leela replied: "Thank you Fry," before leaning in for a kiss. Which he reciprocated. Leaning into it more, Leela hugged Fry with multiple tentacles, even more on her back drifting upward, lost in the moment.

But the moment passed, and so did the workday. Shimmying to the lockers, Leela came to her first hurdle of many that were to come in the near future.

She groaned. "How will i open my locker with these stupid...," she began, struggling to turn the knob. She kept getting her suction cups stuck against the door instead of the knob. "Here, let me." Fry helpfully offered. Then he paused. "Uh, what's your... whoa!" he exclaimed, as a tentacle yanked him closer, for Leela to whisper the combination in his ear. "Fry."

"Yes?"

"I'll trust you with my combination, but don't tell the others, okay?"

"Sure," he promised. Then amended: "What was it again?"

Slapping her forehead, Leela repeated the combination, so Fry could open her locker. Now armed with her stuff, half of which she had no use for anymore, she could start to go home. But really, what was she going to need pants for? Or a shirt, for that matter.

As the frigid evening wind hit her bare skin, so did the realization hit her: "Ah. Right. Clothes k-keep you warm. D-D-Duh."

Shivering, she swung from lamp-post to lamp-post, startling quite a few pedestrians. But she didn't exactly care, it was cold and she was going home, bite her.

Finally arriving at her front door, she felt a slight satisfaction at how fast her commute had been. Maybe the tentacles weren't too bad after all. But that small victory was quickly taken from her when she realized...

"Oh dangit, how am i gonna use my key?" Wrapping an entire tentacle around the tiny metal object wasn't easy already, but how in the world would she be able to insert it into the lock? She missed her fingers and their ability to precisely grip things.

Ten minutes of fumbling and a lot of swears later, Leela gave up, and swung off in another direction.

Morris was reading the newspaper that was flushed down yesterday, when he heard a knock at the door. Who could that be at this hour?

"Mom? Dad?" Ah. His daughter. He quickly got up, opened the door... and jumped back two feet in shock. "Whoah nelly." Her tentaclism had progressed way further. But one look at his daugher's face was enough, to know that she definitely didn't want to get into that right now. "Can i crash here for the night?" she asked, lowering herself and looking to the side, ashamed.

"Of course sweety," Morris took a tentacle, and gently caressed it to reassure his daughter. It felt cold. Patting it, he gestured for her to come in. "Oh hi sweetie," his wife greeted her daughter. "We don't have an extra bed, but if the couch..."

"That's fine, thanks mom." Leela reassured her, smiling. "The couch will do just" yawn "fine."

While she tried to lay down onto it like normal, she would later wake up sprawled all over the room, tentacles splayed out radially at every angle. But for now, the warm blanket her mother pulled over her cold skin, and the soft smile she smiled at her with, did wonders for making Leela drift to sleep.
