Chapter Text
They told us there would be no side effects.
We told ourselves it was for a good cause. Hell, we even believed it for a while. We believed it as they took us away one by one. I believed it even after I was the last one left. Years of my life wasted as they injected needle after needle of God knows what. I don’t even think the scientists knew… Useless bastards.
Kenny probably knew. That psycho was the first person I met that didn’t want me in a bodybag. It’s too bad he’s dead. We watched as the firing squad shot him. We watched as their experiment failed for the seven thousandth time. Did they not care when they murdered all of those people?
“Good morning,” a woman said, snapping me out of my thoughts.
Sam... She was the only scientist that gave two shits about me or anyone else for that matter.
“Did you get my note, prisoner #10001?”
I grit my teeth, “I have a name you know.”
Sam frowned, “You didn’t answer my question. Must I remind you again of the position you’re currently in?”
Fuck. You.
“Of course I got it,” I grumbled, “you taped it to my forehead while I was sleeping.”
Her demeanor shifted. “Excellent! Then you are up to date. You’ll start in five minutes.”
I don’t feel like fighting with her today.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Then I’m glad we’re on the same page, #10001,” Sam’s voice echoed from the other room.
“Same page?” I mumbled. “We’re not even in the same damn library.”
Sam is definitely… something. She’s the reason for my mastery in sarcasm, that’s for sure. But she already chose her side. Sold her soul to the demons that ran tests on us like the coward she is… but I’m no better. What choice did I have? What choice did any of us have?
My thoughts are interrupted once more as a guard walks in. I don’t know his name, but I do know that his smug grin fills me with rage.
“You’re still alive?” he asks disappointedly.
Oh, it’s gonna be like that, huh?
“Aw, I thought you liked me?”
“You little-“
My fist cuts off his sentence as it slams into his stomach. I smile wickedly as he doubles over in pain. He stays down for a solid thirty seconds.
Is he mad?
With a groan, he finally lifted himself off the white floor. His face contorted with ire as he stalked closer and closer.
Nah, he's totally not mad.
His hand lunged for my shoulder just as the shrill cry of the intercom filled our ears. Sam’s voice rang throughout the room, stopping us both in our tracks.
“#10001, go to your station and leave that guard alone!”
I retaliated, “Are you sure that I can’t break his face?”
“No.”
“Not even just a little?”
“NO.”
“You’re no fun,” I looked up at the surveillance camera and pouted.
The guard escorts me to my station with a scowl on his face.
