Incident on Lady of the Sea Last edited December 7066

On April 17th, 7051, a spaceship of weaponry was delivered to the Lady of the Sea station by Over World Enterprises, as part of a routine shipment. These were originally developed by Nether Weaponry, and had been acquired by OWE the previous year [see The Accident at the Records]. Despite being tested while in development for any adverse effects on health, their presence quickly became detrimental to the station. Bouts of a mysterious sickness, became increasingly common, and almost always fatal. They were eventually traced back to the shipment of weapons, but by then the station was already in a state of emergency.
Soon after the state of emergency was declared, the commander of the station Vorago disappeared. No confirmation has been found if he died, was arrested, or just left amid the chaos, but the fact remains that he was no longer in a leadership position. The remaining high-ranking officers quickly took charge of the station, focusing their efforts on keeping the uninfected population safe. This started as quarantining and other standard disease prevention measures, but the situation became much more complicated.
Many of the suspected fatalities shockingly became no longer fatalities. However, they were not miraculous recoveries, but instead were twisted, undead creatures similar to zombies from old Terra stories. These were dubbed ‘Drowned’, because of the high population of Telchin on the station and the similarities between the victims and the stories from the Telchin’s home planet. The new commanders of the station understandably were not thrilled with this development, and turned to some morally questionable methods to deal with it. [see Experimentation].
This continued, with minimal communication from the station, for 10 years. Fortunately, after 10 years, someone decided to go see what actually was happening over there. Oceana Golden, the sister to the new commander of the Lady of the World, took a team of people to investigate and hopefully, help the station. They found a station nearly decimated by disease and unrest, with only a few scatterings of survivors. Golden became the de facto commander of the station, and is currently working on restoring the station to proper working order. Eventually, they plan to hand the station over to someone more qualified, but for now, she is in charge.

The First Drowned ▶

The Telchin leaders, instead of focusing on trying to find a cure for the Drowned, instead turned to science to find ways to fight them off. A lot of the specifics of these very unethical experiments have been lost to the depths of Lady of the Sea, and we’re not going to be the ones to drag them up. However, as always, we will tell you what we do know.
The earliest evidence we have of the experimentation is of Project Aiakos, which was the Telchin’s attempt to modify a Heart of the Sea into some sort of air purifier that would kill the virus. By all accounts, the Conduits worked for a time, but then the virus did what all viruses do when trapped in a metal can in space–it mutated, and suddenly the conduits were no longer effective.
The next project the Telchins undertook was Project Argos. Now, all of Project Argos’ records were destroyed, presumably by the creations of the Project itself. Sketches of different animals–such as lionfish and dolphins–were found in Project Aiakos notebooks referencing Argos. Our scientists suspect that the Telchin were attempting to physically combine existing animals to create some sort of guardian for the station, but failed and whatever creatures they made destroyed the lab before self-destructing.
Not deterred by their failure in Argos, the remaining Telchin scientists pushed forward into Project Chimera, which was a step up scientifically and a step down morally. Instead of physically modifying animals, they genetically modified people using CRISPR, Plasmid DNA, and other technologies. More information about the specifics of gene modification can be found in the reference section, if you’re interested. Like Argos, Chimera was trying to create a guardian against the roving bands of Drowned that now controlled a majority of the station. And also like Argos, Chimera was doomed to self-destruct, with the subjects breaking out and killing the scientists that created them.
However, while Project Chimera was taking center stage, another couple of projects were going on in the wing: Project Leviathan and Project Proteus. Project Leviathan seemed to be a case study on one specific individual, with notebooks detailing the collection of tissue, blood, and DNA samples. Reclaiming of the Station ▶
Speculation ▼
As with any complicated and largely self-contained incident, speculation and conspiracy is common. Most of it is focused around the arrival of the weaponry shipment, as it is widely seen of the beginning of this whole mess. By far the most common theory is that the weapons were known to be dangerous and placed on the station on purpose. Reasonings behind this vary. One is Lennarius, the head of OWE’s security, had a personal vendetta against Vorago due to them being brothers. This is not impossible, but seems unlikely given Lennarius’ response. Another is that the OWE in general sent the shipment to test it, or to get rid of one of the largest non-OWE affiliated organizations. Some theories take it a step farther, saying that Vorago had a hand in taking down the station. They say he organized the shipment, probably with the help of Lennarius, as an excuse to leave the station.
The next largest batch of theories is to do with what happened after. Some of the Telchin’s experiments are said to have produced or altered sentient creatures, and some say they may be still around. If they are, they haven’t said anything, and we don’t blame them. Decidedly more sinister, some people say a subset of Telchin scientists on the station is continuing experimentation.
