Work Text:

Kara immediately flew back to the DEO after Arcata and Rama Khan escaped. When she arrived, however, Alex was hunched over the control panel while Brainy couldn't look her in the eye.

"They're gone, I tried, but they got away," she explained. Brainy looked away and then glanced back at Alex, it became clear to Kara that her sister was crying.

"Kara, I'm sorry, I had no other choice," Alex said tearfully but tried to keep her voice even.

"For what? A..Alex what do you mean?" Alex seems can't bear to look at her.

"I'm sorry... " Kara didn't know why but she just looked at the monitors and dread settled on her stomach.

"Alex, what did you do?... " Kara asked slowly. "What did you do?!" more angrily this time as Alex just keeps apologizing over and over.

"Kar--" Brainy tried to get to her but she just shot off. Kara broke the sound barrier as she flew faster than she ever had, trying to get there on time, hoping that she was not too late.

Kara arrived at Mount Norquay and saw the damages the Claymore had done, a good portion of it was obliterated. No visible signs of life, just miles of rubble, smoke, embers, and small fires. Her heart sank at the sight, despite the clear indication that no one could survive the blast, she tried to be optimistic. Maybe Lena escaped? Maybe she got away just in time, dark thoughts and possibilities slowly creeping onto her.

"Lena!" Kara tried calling out. Hoping, Lena would answer, anyone would answer. She found a hand under the rubble, surrounded by a crimson patch on the ground.

It feels like her heart is in her throat, she lifts the debris praying to Rao that it would not be her. Under it, she found Eve's mangled remains, parts of her pulverized and crushed due to the weight of the ruins that fell onto her. Eve's lifeless eyes stared into nothingness.  Kara averted her gaze and fought the contents of her stomach from spilling.

Kara screamed Lena's name again, calling out for the Luthor hoping would reply, hoping that she's safe somewhere. Suddenly, she heard a hoarse croak, calling out for her. Kara found Lena lying on the ground not far from where she was standing.

Kara gasped and immediately went to Lena hoping she was alright. The sight that greeted her broke her. There Lena lay, struggling to breathe in small gasps of air,  trapped under debris that pinned her to the ground by metal rods sticking out from it,  piercing her lungs. The upper left part of her body and a small portion of her once beautiful face are charred and missing an arm.

"Lena! Oh Rao, Lena!" Kara cried in anguish, fruitlessly prying away the ruins on top of Lena, "I will get you out, okay? I will get you out." she wailed,  "Rao, please. I didn't know, Rao, Lena, I didn't know!" she sobbed, trying to find a way to help her friend.

"K... Kara...? You're here... " Lena struggled to say,  eyes glassy and smiling softly.

"I'm here, Lee, I'm here... Please, just please hold on. I-- I will get you help, okay? You'll be okay. Just hold on a little more, I will get you out of there." Kara begged.

"... Tired.. " Lena said quietly, heartbeat slowly weakening and breath labored.

"No!  No stay awake, Lena please!" She pleaded.

"... Lo-- love... You... " With that Lena took her last breath and Kara finally took every debris off. Eyes hollowed and dull. Kara heard Lena's heart stop beating, she felt Lena's last trickle of life fade.

"Lena? Rao, please no. No! No, please no! Lena!" Kara cradles her best friend's body clinging to it for dear life,  praying to Rao or any celestial to hear her pleas. "Lee, please come back, please. I didn't know, please come back... I love you, please come back to me, please Rao give her back to me... " Kara cried for hours until the sun was out, begging her heart out for Lena.

The staff of the Luthor General Hospital was having a slow night when the devastating sight of a red-eyed and tear-streaked Supergirl carrying a lifeless Lena Luthor walked into the Hospital's doors. No one dared to move or make a noise.

"Can-- Can someone please help..." Supergirl requested, voice hoarse by the hours of screaming. The staff quickly scrambled to make her request rolling a gurney for Lena to take her away. No one missed the way Supergirl tenderly laid Lena down,  the way she touched her face before the staff took her away.

Some of them noticed how this affected the heroine and they gently tried to lead her away from the gathering crowd and into a secluded area but she had other plans and bolted away from the Hospital. It was too much for Kara, too painful for her to handle, she couldn't take it.

She flew straight to the Fortress of Solitude and ordered Kel-Ex to activate the red sun emitter, stripping her of her yellow sun-given powers. Kara curled up in a corner and broke down, where Clark eventually found her passed out due to exhaustion.

Kara woke up to the smell of pancakes. She got up and the events from the previous day came rushing back to her. She felt herself break all over again. Lena Luthor is gone and never coming back, and it was all her fault. If she didn't do that transmission, then she'd still be here. The grief is all too consuming, her heart aches, and nothing in the existence of the multiverse can even ease it.

She remembers that someone is in her loft and goes to see who it is, which turns out to be the last person she ever wants to see right now.

"You should not be here, Alex."

"Kara, I-- I know I'm the last person you want to see right now. But--" Alex tried to reason but Kara cut her off.

"But nothing." Kara walked over to the door and opened it,  "Get out of my home Alex."

"Kara--"

"Get out! Please!"

"I'm sorry--" Alex tried to apologize.

"Your 'sorry' can't bring her back so just stop. Please get the hell out of my home before I forget you are my sister, Alex." With that Alex was out of the door, reluctantly.

"I didn't have a choice, Kara. She had to be stopped. " she appealed but Kara was having none of it and slammed the door to her face.
