I Stand Here Right Beside You

Summary:

This book is dedicated to anyone experiencing/who has previously experienced trauma.

Bastetian shared with me a screenshot from the MR facebook group.

"I would love to see a short story (or even a fan fic) where all of Scarecrow's survivors join up for a therapy group. We already have a qualified doctor with the necessary clearance."

And I decided to write this because I could.

The title is kidnapped - I mean BORROWED from the song "Soldiers" by Otherwise.

I stand here right beside you // Tonight we're fighting for our lives

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

"Well, this is awkward." Book II coughed into his fist as everyone was seated on plush couches, feeling as if they were on the Ellen DeGenres show. In attendance were some of the most prolific names in the USMC, and their acquaintances.

To his right lay Gena "Mother" Newman beside Shane "Scarecrow" Schofield and Sean "Astro" Miller, both wearing equally blank expressions, jaws set firmly.

On his left side was Robert "Rebound" Simmons, Aloysius Knight and Rufus (who probably didn't want to be there, but Knight had dragged him by the collar until he stopped protesting.)

Two pre-teen children sat on the floor, hunched over a crossword and bickering amongst themselves while an older man in a Hawaiian shirt watched over them lovingly.

All in all, it was a rather mixed group, with bounty hunters, scientists, and marines, sitting around one psychologist - Dr Brooke Ulacco.

Notes:

As someone who's dealt with a lot of trauma in the past, it felt amazing to channel some of these feelings. Whilst I may never end up in a situation like Schofield's, I love being able to channel some of the raw emotions into a more universal platform.
