Chapter Text

Wallace Wells was tired.

He had gotten off of work late, it was raining, and his boyfriend couldn’t come over tonight. The last part bummed him out the most. He was the coolest homosexual around, shouldn’t his boyfriend make more time for him? Eh, maybe he was just seething with jealousy cause his boyfriend’s coworkers got to see his own boyfriend more then he did.

They should get their own boyfriends.

To add to everything, he was too tired to cook tonight. Fast food it was.

The rain pattered against his umbrella. It was early spring in Toronto, so there was still snow on the ground, and snow would still fall every once in a while, and wind would pick up every now and then too. Tonight it was just freezing rain. He felt bad for any homeless person or creature out there.

Oh. Speaking of homeless creatures.

He stopped walking. His head was turned to the side to see a small fluffy, orange dog hiding in a box. It looked....sad. And cold. And it had probably gotten wet. Poor thing. Wallace wasn’t one to show his feelings a lot, but hey, no one was around. He bent down to get to eye level with the poor canine. “Hey buddy. You alright?”

The dog flinched, staring up at him. It stared back at him for a while in what seemed like curiosity. Wallace blinked. “All alone, huh? Me too. Well, right now I am. You homeless?”

Course he didn’t expect the dog to answer. However at the word ‘homeless’ the dog looked away quickly. It actually looked...ashamed. Can dogs be ashamed? Well, he guessed the dog was pretty much homeless.

Wallace knew very well the dog wouldn’t be able to answer his questions, but he asked anyway. “You hungry? I got food.”

The dog whipped its head around to him, drooling. Wallace took it as a yes, but was kinda hoping the dog would refuse. Yeah, that sounded selfish, but he really didn’t feel like cooking tonight. Oh well. Poor creature needed it more then him. He sighed and took out the burger from the bag he had and unwrapped it, slowly pushing it into the box. “Here, little guy.”

The dog attacked the damn thing. Wallace hadn’t known many dogs through his life, but he was surprised a dog could eat this fast. In about a minute the dog was finished. It licked its chops, and looked up at him gratefully. Wallace smiled. “Happy you liked it, pal. Well...gotta go. Good luck.”

He turned his head and began to walk away. Did he feel bad about leaving it there? Yes. But his landlord didn’t allow animals.

Why did he feel like he was being followed?

He looked behind himself. No one. Then he looked down. Uh-oh. The dog was following him. It was looking up at him, smiling happily.

Wallace shook his head. “No buddy. I can’t take you home. My landlord doesn’t allow pets.”

The dog didn’t seem to care. It continued to stare at him happily, except now its tail started to wag. Aw man, why did dogs make things so hard? Wallace thought of another option. “Well...I can take you to a shelter.”

The dog’s expression immediately changed. It was one of fear. It yelped and flew back to its box. Wallace blinked. Well. That didn’t go over well. He sighed. He walked back to the box and peered in. “Ok fine. You can come home with me. Just...if my landlord ever stops by, stay in the bathroom.”

The dog looked up at him quickly with wide eyes as if to say, “you mean it?”

Wallace smiled. “Come on, fluffy. Get a move on.”

The dog smiled excitedly and ran out of the box, nuzzling his leg. Wallace wasn’t a fan of affection like this unless it was from his boyfriend; but hey, poor thing was probably alone for so long. He began to walk. “Come on, follow me.”

The dog barked happily and trotted after him. Finally after a while of walking in the pouring rain, they made it to his place. Wallace closed his umbrella and opened the door and stepped in, letting the dog inside before he shut the door. He placed his umbrella down and took off his coat, hanging it up. He turned to the little dog, which was looking around in wonder. Then the dog shook, sending water all over the place.

Terrific.

“Hey. Don’t make a mess ok?”

The dog turned back to him as if to say “sorry.” Wallace threw the bag of just fries on the counter. He didn’t feel like eating anymore. All he wanted to do was sleep. He walked over to his dresser drawer and pulled out pajamas. He was gonna change until he realized something. He turned around. The dog was staring at him.

Jokingly, he said, “What? I’m changing. Ever hear of privacy?”

The dog tilted its head, then flinched, as if it suddenly got the message. To Wallace’s utter shock, it turned around. Ok, did this dog understand english? He was too tired to think about it right now. He changed and walked to his bed, flopping down. He sighed into the bed, enjoying the comfort. Too bad his boyfriend wasn’t here to keep him warm.

He turned and saw the dog still turned around, staring at the door. “You can turn around now.”

Amazingly, the dog did. It was confused when it didn’t see Wallace, which almost made Wallace laugh.

“Over here, dude.”

The dog flinched and turned to him. It wagged its tail curiously, as if it was thinking, “how’d he get over there so fast?”

Wallace grabbed the blanket and pulled it over himself. Sleep was calling him.

Remember how he felt like he was being followed before? Now he felt like he was being watched. He turned and saw the dog staring at him. He tilted his head. “What? You waiting for an invitation?”

The dog wagged its tail a little as if to say “yes.” Wallace wasn’t sure if he wanted the dog in his bed, but he felt bad for the creature. He sighed. “Fine, come here.”

The dog smiled and ran to the bed, flopping down next to him. To Wallace’s surprise, it snuggled into him. Was this its way of saying thank you? Well, gratitude is nice. He turned around in bed and the dog snuggled into his back, seemingly not wanting to leave his side. Despite having a previously stray dog in his bed, he smiled. “Night, little dude.”
