Scene 5: Yan and the Pets

Summary:

A series of short scenes, built off of prompts given by others.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

"Other Newbie!" Yan's shrill voice carried clear across Martle Square. "Did you rearrange my tools? Someone did, and I bet it was you."

Justice, watching from the other side of the square, couldn't make out Mi-an's response, but from the shaking of her head she was denying any involvement. The other builder had been rather blunter that morning, informing Yan that she had better things to do with her time than to mess with his worthless tools, and Arvio had pretended to not hear Yan calling him at noon.

Yan proceeded to rearrange his tools, slamming them about in as fine a tantrum as Justice had ever seen, then stormed down the hill to the commerce guild. Quiet descended onto Martle Square, and Justice leaned back against the mailbox, re-reading the letter he was about to send to Civil Corps headquarters one last time before posting it.

"What are they doing?" Unsuur's voice from right next to him, and Justice jumped.

"Woah! Man, don't sneak up on me like that!"

"Sorry, boss. Guess I was quieter than I thought."

"It's all right. What are who doing?" Justice looked around, but there was a remarkable lack of activity on the Square.

"The animals." Unsuur pointed toward Yan's house. Justice stepped forward and peered in that direction.

On the patio in front of Yan's worktable were a dog, three cats, and two birds. As Justice watched, Macchiato and Banjo knocked several tools off their pegs. X and Coco worked together using beak and claw to pick the lightest of the tools up and put them into completely different spots, while Captain pushed two others under the table, and Nemo carried the last one over to the edge of the balcony and dropped it onto the awning below. Having accomplished their tasks, the animals scattered.

Justice stifled a laugh, realizing who had been moving Yan's tools.

"Should we tell Yan about this, boss?"

Justice didn't have to think about that answer. "Nope."

"Cool."

The men exchanged nods and resumed their patrols.
