Chapter 1: Other Option.
Chapter Text
Karmella Velaryon was born a few months after her father passed away, and her mother left her on the same day she was born. Thus, Karmella was raised by her brother, Corlys, and his wife, Rhaenys.
Unlike her siblings, Karmella inherited her mother Merylla's black hair and became known as the Beauty of the Seas.
At the age of 12, she became the lady-in-waiting to Princess Rhaenyra and loved the girl with all her heart. She had always been devoted to the princess, vowing to protect her at all costs.
When Queen Aemma passed away, Karmella was already 25 years old, no longer part of the princess's court due to her age. Despite her brothers' attempts to marry her off for wealth, Karmella insisted on marrying only when she chose to.
When Corlys introduced Laena as a potential future queen, Karmella wanted to scream. Laena was a child, and the servants knew that Lady Alicent visited the king every night.
To protect her niece from Corlys's ambition and the princess from Otto's schemes, she decided she needed to marry. Marry the King.
With Rhaenyra's permission, who was concerned about Laena's future, fearing she might follow her mother's path, Karmella visited the king.
"I know I'm not who you were expecting tonight, Your Grace, but I'm here for Rhaenyra."
"Is everything alright with my daughter?" Viserys stood up from his chair, not even noticing the first words the woman spoke.
"She will be, I hope."
"Lady Karmella, I don't understand."
"I am an observant woman, Your Grace. I know more than I let on; I know Lady Alicent is visiting you without any company, I know Your Grace does not want to marry Laena, I know the Hand is as ambitious as my brother, if not more. I know there will be people who will not uphold their oaths and will do everything to make Rhaenyra fail."
"Lady Karmella..."
"I love Rhaenyra from the bottom of my heart. Queen Aemma trusted me; she made me promise to protect Rhaenyra, and that's why I'm still here, why I haven't married and gone to live away from the Keep. I honor my promises, Your Grace."
"Lady Karmella, please, be direct."
"Marry me, Your Grace. I won't try to usurp Rhaenyra if we have children. I will do everything for her to sit on the throne and be crowned Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. I am a Velaryon, a better option than Laena, who is a child. And certainly better than Lady Alicent, who has nothing to offer you."
"Lady Karmella, I understand what you're saying. And I'm glad to know that Rhaenyra has someone like you by her side, but I cannot. Lady Alicent..."
"Had her bleeding this morning, Your Grace. She is not pregnant; there is no reason to marry her."
"I dishonored her, Lady Karmella. It's my duty."
"With all due respect, Your Grace, your duty was not to lay with an innocent young girl of only 15 years. Yes, you dishonored her, as was the Hand's plan from the beginning. Don't be foolish, my king, see your Hand for what he is: a treacherous snake who wants your blood on the throne at all costs. He doesn't respect the princess; he doesn't believe she will be a good queen. He pesters you to marry again and sends his daughter to visit you every night. That is not the behavior of a good and just man. That is the action of an ambitious man."
"Lady Karmella, I understand that you are here for Rhaenyra, but you are crossing the line!"
"I apologize, Your Grace, it was not my intention. I ask you to consider what I've said. If you wish to marry me, I will find a way for Lady Alicent to have a good marriage, with someone who will honor and treat her as she deserves. But I won't accept her having lovers, and I ask you to heed my advice, so that Rhaenyra thrives as you have. Good night, Your Grace."
The next morning, the king apologized to Lord Corlys Velaryon, saying Laena was too young for them to marry, but due to the strong support between both houses, he would like to marry Lady Karmella.
Alicent suffered at the hands of her father that night but found herself free of him when Queen Karmella arranged a marriage with Lord Endrew Tarth, a good man who treated her like a queen.
Rhaenyra flourished under her stepmother's care and became a worthy heir—she had her place on the council and, once a month, flew to Dragonstone to see how things were there.
She married her uncle, Daemon, when she turned 21, and with him had five children: Aegon II, Aemon II, Visenya II, Aemma, and Viserys II. She became queen without any issues, and her reign is remembered as one of the best to this day.
As for Karmella and the King, they had three children: Vaemma, Kaleanna, and Aerion. Karmella joined the Stranger at the age of 45, on a warm and peaceful night."
Chapter 2: A Sister's Love
Summary:
What if Alicent dies while giving birth to Helaena?

Hello, how are you?
I'm posting this chapter during my work break because I was very excited 😬 I hope you enjoy it!
Chapter Text
Rhaenyra knows something bad has happened when she sees Otto Hightower looking confused, as if unsure of what to do next. Her father, King Viserys, sits in a chair with his hands on his face, and Alicent, now queen, is nowhere to be found.
The servants are silent, and Rhaenyra feels as if she's been through this before. There's tension in the air, and no one looks at her. It doesn't take long for her to realize what happened: Alicent did not survive the birth of her second child. She had met the same fate as her mother, and her father had lost his second wife.
And she had lost the one who had once been her best friend. The echo of her laughter lost in memories, the arguments they had since the announcement of the marriage vivid in her head, the friendship they once had fading away, replaced by anger and resentment. Now, none of it mattered. Alicent embraced the Stranger, as her mother had done once.
"Did the child survive?" the princess asked, her voice slightly trembling. She didn't need an answer spoken aloud; the guilt on her father's face said it all.
"It was a girl," he whispered. A sister, as Rhaenyra had always dreamed, "Alicent wanted her to be named Helaena."
"A beautiful name for a princess," memories of Alicent saying, in the height of their youth, that one day she would have her Visenya, and Alicent her Helaena, and the two children would be great friends.
The queen's funeral followed the traditions of House Hightower, as Alicent was not a Targaryen. Little Aegon, only two years old, stood beside his grandfather, unaware of what was happening.
The king looked devastated, as if reliving Aemma's funeral, and Rhaenyra hated the growing sense of helplessness within her. But Alicent was gone, and Aegon was here. Aegon needed his sister, Rhaenyra realized, for he wouldn't have his father - Viserys was once again consumed by grief. Cruelly, Rhaenyra wondered who would warm his bed this time.
From that day on, Aegon left the nursery. He now had a crib in Rhaenyra's room and was cared for by her when the servants were not attending to him. Otto Hightower seemed unaware of this development, too absorbed in his schemes to pay attention to his grandson, and Viserys only cared about his foolish model.
The little one was always clinging to the princess, and he had developed the habit of mimicking a dragon whenever anyone approached his beloved sister. Rhaenyra loved the boy so much it hurt, doing everything to make him remember Alicent; she cared for him as she wished someone had cared for her when she lost her mother.
When, only a few moons after Alicent's passing, Otto dared to suggest during the Council that Aegon be raised in Oldtown, Rhaenyra had to restrain herself from killing the man. Her foolish father was on the verge of agreeing when she responded.
"No. Aegon is a prince of the realm, my brother, and he will be raised here by me."
"Princess," Otto called with barely contained anger in his voice, "Aegon is an energetic boy, and you, as the heir, should soon have your own children."
"I will have my children when I deem it necessary, Lord Hand. Until then, I am free to decide when that will happen. And Aegon is my blood. He is the son of the king, the brother of the heir to the throne, and he will be raised as such."
"Rhaenyra, please, Aegon is a child; I am too old to raise him, and you have your duties as the heir."
"And one of my duties is to take care of my family. If not me, then who will? Not a soul in this council remembered Aegon when his mother left us. Who was there beside him when he woke up crying, calling for Alicent? Who stood by him during these moons, taking care of him, giving him love and affection? I did! Because Aegon is mine, and no one here will say otherwise. Anyone attempting to separate him from me will be deemed a traitor. Am I clear?"
It was then that Otto realized his mistake: Rhaenyra fought for Aegon, like a mother fights for her child, and the usurpation he might attempt one day would bear no fruit. Aegon belonged to Rhaenyra; he was hers to protect and love, and Otto would die in the first attempt to separate them because the princess always got what she wanted. And she wanted Aegon.
"Who am I, a mere king, to go against a sister's love for her brother?" Viserys smiled weakly. "Aegon stays with Rhaenyra. It's settled."
Chapter 3: Dragons and Lions.
Summary:
In this chapter, we follow a storyline where Rhaenyra was forced to marry Jason Lannister.
Notes:
Hello, how are you?
This wasn't the best chapter I've written so far, but it was interesting to write.
I want to emphasize that, in case it hasn't been noticed yet, I'm 100% Team Black. So yes, sometimes I'll be a bit "cruel" with some from Team Green.
I also ask that, if you want, give me ideas of what to write; something you'd like to read, some idea that crosses your minds but you don't know how to put on paper.
I hope you enjoy this chapter!
Chapter Text
On the second day of Aegon's name, King Viserys thought it would be appropriate to announce that his daughter, Rhaenyra, would marry Jason Lannister.
An agreement made without her permission, and she was thrown to the lions. But Rhaenyra was a dragon, and she would kill that lion.
The wedding was grand and without deaths, much to Rhaenyra's dismay, as she dreamed of seeing Jason die poisoned at his own wedding.
On that day, Alicent, the slippery snake that she was, said that Rhaenyra would make a great Lady Lannister.
"And a great queen," replied the princess. Alicent was nothing more than a little girl playing at being a queen, and soon she would have to grow up.
The marriage was blessed with several dragons: first the twins Maekar and Loreon, then the little Aemma, and finally, the twins Cerelle and Daenna.
Unfortunately, Jason wasn't present to witness the birth of the twins, having passed away moons before. He died in his sleep, embracing the Stranger like an old friend; although only the princess knew the truth: that traitors were born to die.
When Laena passed away, Rhaenyra was already at her graceful 29 years and took her children to Driftmark, as Laena was a close friend of Rhaenyra.
On that day, Daemon and Rhaenyra met for the first time in many years. Baela and Rhaena were ten days old, and Daemon was trying to be a good father.
Alicent and Viserys, as well as Otto, were there, and the children too: Aegon at 14 days old, Helaena at 12, and Aemond at 10. Daeron was in Oldtown, being raised there.
On that night, Rhaenyra invited her uncle and his girls to join them for a walk on the beach, a way to unite the family and pay their respects to Laena. Rhaenys and Corlys were also present, mourning the loss of their children: Laenor had departed this world at the age of 19 days.
It was then that they saw Vhagar roaring ahead. Rhaenyra ordered her children to stay by her side, but little Daenna had already moved away, driven by an unknown instinct. The girl knew she needed to reach Vhagar, although she didn't know why. Rhaenyra tried to run to Daenna, but Rhaenys stopped her.
"Vhagar has found a new rider, Rhaenyra. There's nothing we can do to prevent this moment. Vhagar has chosen Daenna."
Daenna was meant for Vhagar; she knew it when the dragon allowed her to attempt a flight. Unfortunately, she couldn't fly, not when she saw, just a few kilometers away, the form of a child thrown on the ground. She screamed and ran, followed by her family.
The vision of Prince Aemond, burned and lifeless, haunts everyone to this day. Queen Alicent never recovered from losing a son, isolated in her room, screaming and longing for a son who would never come.
Aegon and Helaena were left at the mercy of their father and grandfather, the former not even remembering them and the latter coveting a throne that would never be his.
Rhaenyra tried what she could to help her siblings, knowing that building a good relationship with them so late in life would be almost impossible. Fortunately, her efforts bore fruit.
When Viserys passed away, Alicent had already departed this world, and Rhaenyra ascended to the throne with Daemon, her current husband, by her side.
Otto Hightower met an unfortunate end, succumbing to death after deeming it appropriate to offend the Queen in front of her children. Loreon wasted no time in beheading the man with his sword, always ready to defend his mother.
Maekar officially became the heir to his mother, with Baela as his wife when he took the throne. Moondancer and Vermax stood beside them.
Loreon, Lord of Casterly Rock, courted his aunt Helaena, inviting her to fly with Dreamfyre and Arrax.
Aegon became Lord of Oldtown, as his uncle had no children, and married Daenna.
Daeron sought Daemon's permission to marry Rhaena, becoming the consort of the Lady of Driftmark, promising to protect her from anything that could afflict her.
Cerelle and Silverwing find their way to the North, where she ends up falling in love with Cregan Stark.
Aemma has a free spirit, visiting every corner of Westeros with Tyraxes, never getting attached to anyone.
Rhaenyra never imagined she would have such a large family: her siblings by her side when it seemed impossible to happen; her children from the first marriage grown and happy; her children with Daemon: Aegon III, Viserys II, and Visenya II, still young but running through the Red Keep and resembling a miniature version of herself.
Rhaenyra departed this world with a smile on her face, finally reunited with her mother after so many years.
Chapter 4: Aemma Lives
Summary:
Aemma lives, Baelon does not.
Notes:
Hello, how are you?
• I want to remind you that English is not my first language, so I apologize if there are some (many) errors.
• Although in the series and books, "moons" is used instead of months, and "days" instead of years (when referring to age), I will try to use both terms.
• Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in advance!
Chapter Text
Aemma hated being pregnant, detested growing attached to the tiny being within her, only to lose it shortly thereafter.
Yet, every day, the council and the realm pressured her to give the king an heir, as if Rhaenyra, her beloved daughter, didn't exist; as if Daemon wasn't the current heir.
Aemma missed when Viserys wasn't burdened by the crown, missed when she and Rhaenyra were enough for him, but now nothing mattered to him more than having an heir, just as he saw in his dream.
The queen knew Targaryens had prophetic dreams, but not everyone was blessed with them, and Viserys, always so drawn to the family's magic, desperately wanted to hold onto the dream he had, whether it was true or not. Aemma tried, more than once, to ask her husband if what he had seen was truly a portent or just his creative mind playing tricks - all in vain; she hadn't had a decent conversation with him in the last few moons.
Aemma was tired, tired of the reign, tired of getting pregnant repeatedly and always failing in what they deemed her "duty." She wished to meet the fool who decided that men should inherit something, just to sock him. Women were just as worthy of such greatness as men, in some cases, even more so.
They say every woman wants to be a queen, but Aemma would rather remain a simple Lady, as she was before. The crown is heavy, the duties are exhausting, and happiness is forgotten in a corner until it disappears.
Aemma dreamt so often of that cursed Great Council of 101 AC, dreaming of seeing Rhaenys announced as the heir. She knew it was unfair to wish someone a life as miserable as hers, but she liked holding onto the small fantasies of her mind.
The pains of labor started early, and though she was already accustomed to them, it still hurt horribly as if it were the first time. Aemma prayed to the Seven to make that child survive, prayed for it to be a boy, and for her to be here to see him grow.
While the tournament unfolded and everyone celebrated for a child yet to be born, she called out for Viserys and Rhaenyra; hated being alone in these moments, hated not being able to hold her husband's hand and have him by her side saying everything would be okay.
After agonizing hours, the child was born, screaming as much as its mother.
"Baelon," she whispered as she held the child. Even outside the room, Aemma could hear Viserys shouting with joy.
The boy didn't live for more than a few hours, and Aemma cried and screamed upon realizing that the child beside her was no longer breathing.
Another loss. Another defeat.
Her boy was gone, like so many others before him. The pain of losing him was so intense, so strong, that she wished to be taken along by the Stranger.
Aemma couldn't bear it any longer, but oh, there was still Rhaenyra, her little dragon who needed her mother, and Aemma would burn this world for her.
The days that followed were challenging, Aemma so weakened that she couldn't even attend her son's funeral. Viserys visited her whenever he could to check if she was well, trying his best to be a loving and attentive husband, as he always did when she went through this. Aemma had grown accustomed to her husband's actions, one day caring and the next, not even remembering her.
They had agreed that she wouldn't have any more children due to the risk to her health. And Daemon, going against everything she imagined, said it was time for Viserys to name Rhaenyra his heir.
Daemon confessed he wasn't born to rule, expressing his hatred for council meetings and any diplomacy involved. He was a warrior.
He promised Aemma that he would protect Rhaenyra and her reign, he knelt before all the Lords of Westeros and swore his loyalty to her.
Days turned into months, and Aemma resumed her duties as queen, placing a significant focus on preparing Rhaenyra for her future.
Viserys was growing weaker, and now it was he who lay in a bed. Aemma had taken charge of council meetings and affairs concerning the realm – much to the Lord Hand's displeasure, as he saw his power dwindling as the queen's trust grew.
Soon, the War for the Stepstones erupted, and Daemon, a widower for a few moons, had already told Aemma that he would fight alongside Corlys.
Rhaenyra hated her uncle's departure to the Stepstones but understood it was necessary. She confessed to her mother that she would like to have him as her husband, that if she were to marry someday, it would be him.
"When Daemon returns from the Stepstones victorious, I will try to convince your father to allow a courtship. But until then, you must be the best princess this realm has ever seen. Your reputation will be shaken by marrying Daemon, so keep it high, so that nothing and no one can stand in your way."
Aemma was, of course, referring to the Lord Hand. He was very interested in a marriage for Rhaenyra, even mentioning his son, Gwayne, as if the boy were worthy of her.
Otto was a cunning and ambitious man; she had noticed this even before Viserys became king. He abused his power as Hand, sometimes trying to assert more authority than both she and Viserys, and his discontent about Rhaenyra being the heir was evident.
He dared to suggest in a meeting that perhaps, when the king recovered, he should take a second wife, just to have a spare in case anything happened to Rhaenyra.
Aemma felt so insulted and irritated that she almost asked Rhaenyra to use him as a meal for Syrax. She knew that the "second wife" he was suggesting was his daughter, Alicent. As if the queen would allow such an insult, not only to House Targaryen but also to House Arryn.
Aemma was determined: Viserys needed a new Hand, and fortunately, she wasn't the only one who thought so. The queen had her morals; she valued truth and fair play, but there were things that were only resolved through death.
And so, the Lord Hand ended up passing away in his sleep. A heart ailment, declared Grand Maester Gerardys, who came from Dragonstone when Maester Mellos proved too old for the position.
Aemma ensured that Otto received an honorable burial and asked Alicent to stay at court, given that she had practically grown up with Rhaenyra. The princess offered the girl the position of Lady-in-Waiting.
Viserys was deeply shaken by the sudden death of someone he considered a great friend. The king, too ill, couldn't even pay tribute to the man who had served him for so long.
Rhaenys had been the Hand of the Queen for a year, serving the Crown to the best of her ability. Her daughter, Laena, was extremely close to the princess, bordering on the position of best friend. It was quite common to see the two flying at dawn.
Aemma displayed a strength never seen before; she ruled the Seven Kingdoms in a way Viserys never could. Speaking of Viserys, the man was a shadow of what he once was: he had lost an eye due to an unknown illness, had some missing fingers, and now wore a mask as his skin was so damaged that the inside of his cheek was visible.
Aemma stood by her husband's side every night, giving him baths, tending to his wounds, and telling him everything about the day. She brought Rhaenyra to see him, and the princess shared stories with him in Valyrian. It wasn't a happy life, Aemma knew, but it was what they could do for Viserys.
But there was something, someone , that still kept Viserys tied to this world. Daemon returned on a cloudy but still warm afternoon, wearing a crown on his head.
King Daemon of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea, that's what they called him, but he abdicated that. There was only one king in Westeros, and it was his brother. Daemon knelt before Queen Aemma, his sister-in-law, and handed her the crown as a way to show that he wasn't there as a challenge.
Aemma accepted the crown and the lands but made it clear to Daemon that they now belonged to him. He was responsible for the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea, and everything that happened there.
On that day, Viserys managed to leave his rest with great effort. He seemed to be waiting for his brother, longing for that meeting for so long. The brothers embraced, and Daemon didn't know how to react to Viserys' condition.
He tried to be the best he could, giving Viserys a night full of smiles and banter. That night, finally at peace, Viserys met the Stranger.
Viserys was dead.
The king, the brother, the father, the husband.
Viserys was dead.
The realm was in mourning.
Aemma was lost.
Rhaenyra was devastated.
Daemon was shattered.
The mourning was felt by everyone in the realm. The Widowed Queen was often seen praying at the Sept of Baelor, and Queen Rhaenyra, still under the guidance of her mother, lit fourteen candles for the Fourteen Flames of Valyria. Daemon mourned in his own way, but surprisingly, Lady Mysaria no longer kept him company.
The Rogue Prince drank heavily to forget the pain and flew to the Stepstones, falling from what was his, but always returning to Rhaenyra. He was in mourning, but she needed him. Rhaenyra lost her father, yet she also had a realm to govern.
Rhaenyra was a queen, and the pressure was too much. Despite everything, she had Aemma and Daemon. Daemon, who each day was seen less as an uncle. She wanted him, like a wife wants a husband. She needed him.
And Aemma was not foolish; she knew their flame burned and scorched as much as a dragon's fire. Therefore, she agreed to a courtship, holding onto the promise she had made one day.
The courtship lasted a little over a year, the wedding taking place moons after their official ceremony, finally making her recognized as Rhaenyra of House Targaryen, First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lady of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm.
During this year, Alicent was officially Lady Lannister, married to Jason Lannister, and pregnant with their first child.
Laena was being courted by Harwin Strong, and Laenor was engaged to Jeyne Arryn - to everyone's surprise. They had met at Rhaenyra's coronation, and it is said that the queen brought them together.
Indeed, she did. Bringing together two people with opposing tastes, allowing them to live as they wished. Laenor and Jeyne agreed on an arrangement: they lived together a few months of the year, the rest of the time, he stayed in Driftmark, and she in the Vale.
Rhaenyra's first child was born a year after the marriage. Aegon II, Prince of Dragonstone and Heir to the Iron Throne, followed, a year later, by his brother, Viserys, Heir to the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea.
After Aegon and Viserys came the twin girls, Visenya and Daenys, followed by Baelon and Daella. The siblings had dragons, three born in the cradle, and three claimed.
Laena and Harwin hastily married - though everyone knows why, they don't speak of it. The twins, Vaella and Soren, came too soon, only six moons after the wedding.
As Laenor and Jeyne had no children, Vaella became the Heir to Driftmark, and Soren the Heir to Harrenhal. Three years after the twins, Maella was born, Heir to the Eyrie, chosen by her aunt, Jeyne.
Alicent and Jason had five children: Loreon, Cedrella, Thalyssa, Tiberius, and Jasper.
Aemma eventually married Alan Tarly, but they had no children. Rhaenys remained as Rhaenyra's Hand until Laena took her place at the age of thirty-six.
Despite the losses, the game, and the manipulations - caused intentionally or not - it was, at some point, a good life and a good reign for Rhaenyra and those around her.
Chapter 5: POV Rhaenyra - A Velaryon Wife
Summary:
Rhaenyra marries Corlys.
Notes:
Hello, how are you? I hope you enjoy it. In this chapter, Rhaenyra marries Corlys. I haven't delved into the story of their marriage and the years they spent together, as it's just an idea that popped into my head. If you have any plot suggestions, please let me know, and I'll try to write them. I apologize for any spelling errors as I'm posting during my work hours and didn't have much time to review it
Chapter Text
RHAENYRA TARGARYEN
I married Corlys Velaryon at the age of 18, almost two years after Rhaenys' death.
I was given to the man as an apology, my father's words. I was to pay for his sins and mistakes; I was to marry a man with children my age, one who always coveted the throne, an excessively ambitious man because my father, the foolish king he was, couldn't do the simple thing and marry Laena Velaryon to secure the family alliance. No. Viserys Targaryen would never do that. He couldn't marry right after my mother's death, not to Laena; but to Alicent Hightower, the whore who warmed his bed, he could. And now I had to fix his mistakes.
I married Lord Velaryon, gave him three children, something the little whore couldn't do. Alicent smiled and caressed her belly, but no child came from there. She mocked my mother, lay in the bed where my mother had bled to death, and the gods are punishing her, just as I asked. She will suffer everything my mother suffered, and I will succeed where she will fail. I am a mother, and one day I will be a queen, a true queen and not a fake project like her: praying to her gods to help her when she sinned and threw her beliefs in the trash when it came to having power. The gods, whoever they may be, do not help hypocrites.
Laena, my dear stepdaughter, was angry at the beginning of the engagement, and she was completely right. She had lost her mother, as I had lost mine, and her father was marrying again — even having waited for the mourning period. But as my cousin, she understood it was not my choice, it was my father's.
For a while, I wondered if Alicent, who had always been a friend, hadn't gone through what I went through; but then I realized that I didn't lie with a grieving man, didn't visit him in secret, didn't act like a dishonorable woman. Alicent may have followed her father's orders, but at some point, she enjoyed it — the cynical smile on her face when she married him, the audacity to announce her first pregnancy at my birthday party, daring to say that a little king was growing inside her. I should have demanded her head that day.
What pleases me is knowing that my relationship with Laena is different. I love her and would burn this world for her, as I would for my children. And Laenor, oh, I tried to give him the world. I helped him escape to Essos to live a life with the man he loved.
Laena married Cregan Stark, to everyone's surprise, and her daughter, Rhaella, will marry my firstborn, Jacaerys. My beloved Lucerys, my second son, is the Lord of Driftmark and is engaged to Cassandra Baratheon. And Maerys, my little one, only has eyes for Loren Lannister.
Corlys had a sailor's worthy death, and I suffered. I suffered because he was a good husband, gave me three children, and always supported me in my decisions. But my mourning passed, and I married my uncle, finally.
Daemon, during my years of marriage, had been taking care of Dragonstone for me. He did not marry again and never touched me. I remained faithful to my husband until his death. But a love like mine and my uncle's is for a lifetime, and finally, we had the chance to be together.
Daemon gave me five more children: the twins Aegon and Viserys, my precious Aemond, my princesses Helaena and Visenya. When I sat on the throne, I was the happiest woman in the world, surrounded by my children, my husband, and everyone shouting "Queen Rhaenyra".
And the traitors were drowning in misery.
Chapter 6: POV Rhaenyra - A Strong Boy
Summary:
Rhaenyra marries a Strong.
Chapter Text
RHAENYRA TARGARYEN
I was tired.
Tired of my father's lies, Alicent's betrayal, Otto Hightower's audacity, Daemon's abandonment, the consecutive losses; I was so weary of the burden of being the heir, knowing that I would soon be replaced, that it was futile to fight for something they would try to steal from me.
I was tired.
Syrax was the only one to bring me any happiness, and even then, I didn't appreciate her enough. I was alone in a court full of vipers, without the support of my father, my uncle, and Rhaenys – the woman I had called aunt since childhood, the woman who let Laena sneak into my chambers late at night, the one who stood by my mother's side with every childbirth. I was foolish to believe I would at least have her.
I had no more perspective, and then Larys Strong appeared. Not in a romantic or friendly way. I was tired, but I wasn't foolish: I knew how to recognize a manipulator when I saw one.
Larys tended to side with whoever he thought was the winner, where he believed he would have some success. For some reason, he thought it would be by my side, just when I had no one. I let him take advantage of my vulnerability, sharing secrets to gain my loyalty. He knew things I couldn't even fathom: he knew that Alicent visited my father from the first day of mourning, that she surrendered to him in the bed that once belonged to my mother, that Daemon prophesied those atrocious words, that he stole the egg that belonged to Baelon...
Larys helped me, intentionally or not. He taught me the game of thrones, in his own way, and as twisted as the relationship was, it became a... friendship. It was a mutually beneficial relationship: I had a Master of Whispers, and Larys gained some power in the court, always being present by the side of the Princess Heir.
Soon rumors of a courtship began, but they didn't go far; soon my father threw me into that cursed tour. I didn't find a husband, and a part of me still ardently longed for Daemon.
I let myself be carried away, went to the brothel, was seen, and he fled like a coward. Harwin, Larys' brother, found me and took me back to the castle. Larys was already there, ready to tell me about Otto's spies. That night, I sealed my fate. Daemon fled, as always, and Larys was there for me. With Harwin's help, we prepared. The next day, Daemon and Otto tried to tarnish my name and image, but I was smarter. At sunrise, I met with my father and Alicent, told them that Daemon had taken me to the city, but Larys had his brother taking care of me all the time. When Daemon tried to take me to the brothel, Harwin intervened and brought me back to the castle, where I stayed until dawn in the presence of the Strong brothers, including Cerella, the youngest among them.
Despite this, my father already intended to marry me to Laenor – which would be terrible, as my cousin would be living in misery in a relationship where he didn't feel comfortable. So, when he brought up the subject, I acted without thinking: I "confessed" to being courted by Larys and harboring feelings for him.
It didn't take long, and the marriage was announced. The Velaryons were not pleased, but I promised my firstborn to Laena's. Corlys would still have his blood on the throne.
The marriage to Larys was not built on love, but he got what he wanted, and I, in a way, got what I wanted too. Larys helped me with the alliances I needed, assisted me in strengthening myself, and I gave him a power never seen or felt before. A clear manipulation on both sides.
Larys gave me two beautiful dragons: Rhaegar and Aemma, both hatched with their eggs just a few days old. Rhaegar had his Vermax, and Aemma had her Arrax. My lovely children, born with a three-year difference. Rhaegar, the eldest, with only his father's eyes and hair, but the rest is all mine; and Aemma is a younger version of me.
But not everything is rosy, and although Larys was a good husband, but it was time to become a widow.
I decided this after Laena's death, when that tragedy involving Aemond and Vhagar occurred. It's sad to remember how the boy was found, lifeless, after trying to claim the dragon. Vhagar belonged to Rhaena; they were made for each other, just as Laena had been made for Vhagar.
Until then, there was no reason for me to suspect my husband. But the next day, Aemma found Helaena near the shells, lifeless. She had thrown herself, the maesters said, trying to rid herself of the pain she felt at losing her brother.
Alicent went mad, having lost two children in a matter of hours, and tried to accuse my Aemma of murdering Helaena when it was clear it was suicide. She lunged at my girl, and may the Gods forgive me, but no one threatens my children. The knife she intended to use to harm my girl was the same one that cut her throat.
And Larys had the audacity to say I shouldn't have killed Alicent, that she was a queen, and it would cause problems in my future reign, if I even had one now. He was a coward. Too much of a coward to defend his own daughter.
Nothing happened to me. It was self-defense, my father said. I was defending my daughter from a mad queen. Alicent would have done the same for her children. I continued as the heir, and three months after these events, my husband died from an unknown illness.
I mourned, took care of my children, cultivated my alliances, slowly rid myself of the Greens. I sat on the throne without any opposition and took Harwin as my second husband.
I always did like a Strong Boy
Chapter 7: POV ALICENT - A Mother's Lost.
Summary:
Alicent's children looks like her, but ambition consumes her.
Chapter Text
ALICENT HIGHTOWER
Rhaenyra did not understand what it was like to have her future planned before even being born. My father decided that he would have a queen for a daughter, and so it would be.
For a while, these ambitions did not affect me, but gradually, I realized that Queen Aemma was weak and incapable of fulfilling her duty to the king. She was not worthy of wearing that crown, as she couldn't even provide an heir to the king. And Rhaenyra was nothing more than a spoiled princess with the world in her hands.
So, when the queen died, the opportunity arose. I did what was necessary, and soon the crown was mine. Rhaenyra did not understand my side or my motives, and I even tried to maintain our "friendship," but such a relationship no longer mattered to me. Still, I pretended to be shaken so that the court would stand by my side.
When I became pregnant for the first time, I prayed for it to be a boy, and so it was. I gave the king a male heir! Yet, he insisted that the throne belonged to Rhaenyra. My father blamed me for it, claiming that Aegon looked too much like me and lacked Valyrian features, unlike Rhaenyra.
Determined, I became pregnant again. I would have a son who would be king, with my blood on the throne and no one would stop me. My son was the firstborn, and if Aegon proved inadequate, I would have others. It wouldn't be like foolish Aemma. I just needed a boy who resembled Viserys.
But it wasn't meant to be. Helaena was a mirror image of me, Hightower from head to toe. Father said she was as useless as Aegon, even though he had a dragon. My children weren't Targaryens enough to inherit the throne, my father claimed. At least one of them should have a Valyrian appearance, he insisted, for us to garner support from other houses and from Viserys.
Still, I tried to forge alliances at court, but my power was weakening, and Rhaenyra's was growing stronger. Larys Strong was not as reliable an ally as I had hoped, and his claims that Rhaenyra was having an affair with his brother still lacked substantiation.
Rhaenyra had been married to Laenor Velaryon for almost a year when she became pregnant. It was then that I hoped Larys was right; Laenor was not capable of impregnating the princess. He preferred the company of knights, and Harwin was treated with too much favor for a mere Sworn Shield.
But then Jacaerys was born, a few days after my Aemond, and he was entirely Valyrian, with no trace of bastardy. While Aemond was so different from Viserys, with hair as dark as that of my ancestors.
Rumors circulated that he was a bastard, the son of my Sworn Shield, Ser Criston Cole, and they only intensified when Aemond failed to bond with a dragon, while Jacaerys, cursed be him, had his egg hatch mere weeks after his birth.
I was cursed. Father said I was weak, and it would be impossible to have Hightower blood on the throne with so many rumors about me and my children. But finally, I had Daeron, who resembled a younger Viserys. However, Rhaenyra also had more children, and while I had only one with a Valyrian appearance, she had three.
I still tried to make Aegon the king, but Viserys found out about what he did with the maids and sent him to the Wall, disinheriting him. I tried to make Viserys understand that Aegon was young and foolish, unaware of what he was doing, but Viserys was adamant about it.
Chapter 8: POV VISERYS TARGARYEN - A Dream
Summary:
Viserys had a dream.
Chapter Text
VISERYS TARGARYEN
I had a dream, and I clung to it without truly understanding it. And because of it, I lost the woman I loved. Aemma was my world, my sun, my moon, the air I breathed.
When I lost her, I realized the kind of king I was, and that it was time to change. But Alicent, daughter of my Hand, came to visit me, and it was a comfort to have her there, although a voice in my mind kept asking, 'Why isn't she with Rhaenyra?' Rhaenyra and Alicent were always together, and when my daughter needed her the most, she was in my chambers.
I knew Otto was an ambitious man, but I didn't realize how much. Alicent gradually approached, attempting something that was not meant to be done, something I refused to do. I was in mourning! And I would not marry Laena Velaryon or anyone else. My only marriage was to Aemma.
I decided to tell Rhaenyra, as it was the best I could do – and I made sure to bring Rhaenys to the court; it was time for her to take a place on my council. Rhaenyra was understandably angry, and I promised her that I hadn't touched the girl and wouldn't marry again.
I forbade anyone, except my family, from entering my chambers and got rid of Otto. He couldn't be a just Hand when he was pushing his daughter onto a grieving man. I made Rhaenys my Hand; I knew I would thrive under her counsel.
Rhaenyra had her place on my Council, as an Heir should. I allowed her to marry Daemon, knowing that nothing in the world could keep them apart. I had three grandchildren: Aegon, Viserys, and Visenya. When my health was extremely weakened, I passed my crown to Rhaenyra. I wanted to see her as queen before being taken to the world of the dead.
I had a dream and saw terrible things. I may not have understood it, but I did what I could. I leave this world with the certainty that Westeros is in good hands.
Chapter 9: King Arthan I, son of Rhaenyra and Aegon.
Summary:
WAIT! It's not the Aegon you're thinking of. Alicent never had a chance in this "what if?"
Chapter Text
Aemma married early and had children even earlier, compared to other women in the family. There was a constant fear that Aemma might encounter the Stranger if the pregnancy was not successful.
But Aemma surprised everyone when, at the age of 13, she gave birth to a healthy boy, the little Aegon. Viserys was the happiest man in the world!
Two years later, Rhaenyra was born. The Delight of the Realm; her uncle's favorite, extremely protected by her family.
A year later, Anear and Maegon came, twins born moments apart, a surprise to everyone.
When Viserys became the heir, Aemma was pregnant again. This time, Daenys arrived.
In 105 AC, when Viserys was already king, Baelon came into the world, but Aemma couldn't endure and met the Stranger days after the boy's birth.
Some tried to persuade the king to marry again, but he remained firm in stating that he already had an heir. Aegon would be king after him, and there were still spares if needed.
Nonetheless, Alicent Hightower was sent to her chambers, much to the displeasure of Prince Aegon, who visited his father that night. His anger was evident, and at just 10 years old, the Prince could instill fear.
Alicent, at 16, served as a Lady-in-Waiting to Rhaenyra. Who did she think she was to visit a grieving man? A girl like her couldn't be trusted with Rhaenyra's safety. What would they say about her sister, having a dishonored woman as a lady?
Thus, Alicent returned to Oldtown. Aegon always got what he wanted; after all, he was the heir to the throne. And Otto Hightower was replaced by Daemon Targaryen.
Aegon and Rhaenyra married when she turned 14. By then, Aenar was already betrothed to Laena, and Maegon to Cassandra Baratheon. The king was swift in securing his alliances.
When Rhaenyra became pregnant, Daenys was promised to Laenor, and Baelon was still a 7-year-old boy, dreaming of flying on his Shrykos.
The first child of Rhaenyra and Aegon was named Arthan. Following him, there were Naelon and Aemma.
Aenar and Laena had the twins Baela and Rhaena. Maegon had only one son, Maekar, and Daenys and Laenor had Jacaerys - the boy bearing a stronger resemblance to Maegon than Laenor, though rumors were never confirmed.
In 125 AC, Aegon passed away during a hunt, leaving Rhaenyra and three children. Since he already had his heir, Arthan would inherit the throne after Viserys' death.
And so it happened. Arthan married his sister, Aemma, and had a peaceful reign despite some challenges.
Chapter 10: POV RHAENYRA TARGARYEN - Dragons and Towers
Notes:
Hi, everything okay?
Before you read the chapter, I would like to thank you for all the comments and kudos. The support and constructive criticism make my day! Thank you very much.
Chapter Text
RHAENYRA TARGARYEN
I confess I cried while shouting at the midwives, but that... that pain was unbearable. It felt like I was being torn apart, and the midwives kept yelling, "push." I wanted to push a slap on their faces, acting as if I wasn't pushing hard enough.
But after long hours, my boy arrived. My Jacaerys. And thanks to the gods, my boy was my image. My little copy, my heir, my world.
Holding Jacaerys in my arms made me certain that I would burn the world for him.
Lucerys came quickly, unlike his brother. Born two years later, my little boy was the most precious jewel of Driftmark. So much like his father! Laenor couldn't hold back the tears upon seeing our boy with the birthmark just like his.
Joffrey wanted to challenge Jacaerys, deciding that taking ten hours to be born was necessary. It was torturous, I confess. I believe Joffrey was the most challenging of the three. But when he came, ah... my little boy was a perfect blend of Laenor and me.
In all three instances of giving birth, the bitch wanted to see them. She even ordered that Joffrey be brought to her after birth, but I refused. If she wanted to see my children, she would come to us.
Alicent could be queen, but to me, she was nothing. She and Otto tried to cast doubts on the paternity of my children, but it was in vain. All three were Laenor's.
She tried to sow discord among our children, but I loved my siblings, and they were attached to me. They spent more time with me than anyone else. I helped raise them, in my own way. They may have been born of her, but they are mine.
My children and uncles loved each other, and my father saw that. His eyes shone when he saw the family together, and when I suggested a marriage between Jacaerys and Helaena, he readily agreed.
Alicent and Otto attempted many things, but they failed. I was a dragon, my siblings and my children too. And dragons burn towers.
Chapter 11: Another Chance
Notes:
Hi! How are you?
Thank you so much for the support; you all are amazing. The comments and kudos warm my heart.
I just want to emphasize that the chapters have and will have flaws and plot holes, as they aren't elaborated – they're just random ideas that pop into my head, and I share them with you.
Hope you enjoy.
Chapter Text
Jacaerys Velaryon may not have been a dreamer like Daenys, but he was undoubtedly a time traveler – right after his death, the gods revealed to him the future of his House.
Jacaerys woke up knowing he had to do something, but he was still just a boy. A boy consumed by hatred, as the image of his mother burning would never leave his mind.
It was time for the Green Queen to lose her long-awaited heir. Of course, Jacaerys was still a child; he couldn't simply plunge a sword into the fool's throat. But he could poison. The maesters administered belladonna to Aegon, small amounts enough to sedate him when the Queen tried to prevent Aegon from escaping. All Jacaerys had to do was add a bit more belladonna to Aegon's evening tea, enough to kill.
Thank you for your teachings, Daemon.
Aegon was found dead in his chambers, and the Queen's screams echoed throughout the castle. Fortunately for Jacaerys, who realized a bit too late that his plan could have flaws, nothing was pointed at him. The maesters couldn't reveal the truth, not when the Queen was also culpable – she ordered them to give tea to the prince. So, the Queen suffered, believing the blame was hers; and for the people of Westeros, Prince Aegon had a natural, albeit premature, death.
With Aegon out of the way, there was still Aemond. He could still be a tool for his mother, and the boy needed to die before claiming Vhagar. Unfortunately, after Joffrey's birth, they quickly went to Dragonstone. All that was left for him was to contemplate how to kill Aemond at Laena's funeral.
It would be necessary to kill him before he reached Vhagar, but he could hardly do that without raising suspicions. So, Jacaerys could only think of one alternative: dragonfire.
He slipped away from his quarters and trailed Aemond. His uncle only claimed the dragon late at night, so he still had some time – if not, he'd have to think of something. Fortunately, the gods were on Jacaerys's side, and he only needed to give his uncle a little nudge.
Aemond never saw Jacaerys coming, and Vhagar's fire caught the boy instantly.
Jacaerys fled; fear still lingered within him. Despite his matured mind, he harbored foolish notions that could put him in great peril if caught. And blessed be the gods that he didn't get burned in the process.
The next day, Aemond's body was found, and another funeral was held. At least, Rhaena managed to claim Vhagar a few days later.
If his family knew he was behind the deaths, they didn't say, and so he continued.
There were still Helaena and Daeron. Jacaerys wasn't sure if he wanted to kill his aunt. Helaena had suffered at the hands of Aegon, and she was innocent to some extent. What could she do? Dreams she didn't understand, a family that thought her mad, and a pawn in the Greens' game. Of all, Helaena was the one who deserved a second chance the most.
And there was Daeron. He wasn't a scourge like Aegon and Aemond, but he would surely be used by the Greens to usurp the throne. Indeed, he was already residing in the Red Keep, and rumors of a marriage between him and Helaena were gaining traction.
Days before the wedding, Jacaerys decided what he would do. All he needed was a moment alone with his aunt to understand what needed to be done.
"You're not the Jace who ran through the Red Keep and ate lemon cakes with me. You're the Heir Jacaerys who witnessed terrible things."
"Helaena..."
"I know it was you who killed Aegon and Aemond."
"And why didn't you try to stop me?"
"Because I am that Helaena, Jacaerys. The Helaena who should have been your queen, not Aegon's."
Daeron was found dead on the morning of his wedding, a cup of poison in his hand and a prostitute beside him, also lifeless. According to rumors, they both drank the poison, believing that only in death could they be together.
What they didn't know was that it was Jacaerys who provided the poison, and Helaena who compelled them to drink.
Rhaenyra was quick to convince the king to marry Jacaerys and Helaena, and despite the queen's protests, the wedding took place.
Speaking of the queen, she was beheaded for treason, alongside Larys Strong. Jacaerys found them in an extremely embarrassing situation, and the Prince couldn't contain his shock at seeing the queen betray his grandfather – his proclaimed insults were enough to make the court gather to witness what was happening.
And Otto Hightower met his end by Dark Sister, as Daemon had always dreamed.
Chapter 12: The Greens never stood a chance.
Summary:
Letters from Gwayne Hightower to his brother, Arthur Hightower.
Notes:
Hi, how are you? I hope you enjoy it; this chapter introduces Arthur Hightower, Alicent's brother. It is known that she has several siblings, but only Gwayne is mentioned in the series, so I invented Arthur here.
Chapter Text
"Arthur,
Father has decided to send Alicent to the King's chambers. He says that this way, she will become queen and we will have our blood on the throne.
I don't believe in this, I think it's wrong of him to do this to our sister. Alicent is a good girl, always by Princess Rhaenyra's side; making her act this way will create a rift between them, and having the Princess on our side would be great.
Now that the Princess is the heir, I thought father would try to arrange a marriage between her and me, but he chose to prostitute our sister instead.
I find it hard for the King to change heirs, the Princess is his favorite.
Gwayne."
"Arthur,
Alicent is going to marry the King. I don't like it, I tried to make father see the reality, but he is obsessed with having power at court.
And uncle doesn't help, always wanting more and more. I'm tired of this game.
Gwayne."
"Brother,
It's a girl. Father is furious with Alicent, he called her horrible things. Our sister was in tears, but the king was happy. He named the child Visenya, saying that Princess Rhaenyra always wanted a sister.
The Princess was furious, from what they say, but she visits our niece every day. She takes better care of the child than our sister does.
Alicent doesn't even look at the girl.
Gwayne."
"Arthur,
Visenya has a dragon, Sunfyre, but that didn't appease father. He never sees Nya, and Alicent pretends to care about the girl when others are around.
The one who truly takes care of our niece is Princess Rhaenyra; she is always holding Visenya, teaching her about dragons, and she even started giving High Valyrian lessons to the little one.
Gradually, I begin to think that father is wrong, and may the Seven forgive me, but I feel like I can switch sides.
Gwayne."
"Brother,
Helaena is as big as Visenya now, and she looks extremely like the King, besides being quiet - unlike Visenya, who is a little demon.
Our sister ignores both of them and keeps trying to have a boy; father says it's her fault, he called her weak.
The Princess keeps taking care of both, even when she's busy with other things.
Speaking of the princess, she's going to marry Laenor Velaryon - father was irritated, but Alicent said the boy has other preferences, that the arrangement was perfect.
I hope that one day Alicent returns to being the girl we knew.
Gwayne."
"Gwayne,
Since he lost the position of Hand and returned to Oldtown, father has become unbearable. I can't stand being near him for a minute, it's maddening.
You should have seen when he found out about Alyssa, he completely lost it. Alicent was called so many things that I thanked the gods she wasn't here to hear what he said.
But another girl, then? Alicent will suffer father's wrath, I feel it. He says girls are useless, and it will be impossible to have any of them on the throne. If only it were a boy...
Arthur."
"Father,
The king is dead, and Alicent has been accused of treason; she will be executed by Queen Rhaenyra tomorrow.
Alicent was caught slandering the Queen and her children, and Rhaenyra did not take it quietly.
I hope you are happy, father, because you have lost the power, the throne, and the daughter.
Long live the Blacks, father. The Greens never stood a chance.
Gwayne."
Chapter 13: POV JAEHAERYS I TARGARYEN - Fourth Option
Summary:
Jaehaerys was unsure if Rhaenys, Viserys, or Daemon were good choices to inherit the throne.
Notes:
Hi, how are you?
I've changed quite a few things, Jaehaerys' personality, the ages of the characters, and so on. This will become clear in the chapter.
This is a 'what if?' scenario, so these changes diverge from the canon
Chapter Text
JAEHAERYS I TARGARYEN
Daemon, Viserys' brother, was put forward as an option by some Council members. But Daemon is young, energetic, bloodthirsty, with an insatiable appetite for war. A true king must know when to wage war and when to act with diplomacy. Daemon would lack the patience for such nuances.
I found myself at a crossroads. I wasn't sure whom to entrust with the realm. Whom could I place such trust in? Rhaenys, Viserys, or Daemon?
None.
A vote was proposed, but I still wasn't certain. It would create a certain division in the family; the one not chosen would feel resentful.
I couldn't let that happen. I needed a fourth option, I needed certainty.
And the Fourteen Flames sent her right to me, on a cold night where my thoughts tormented me.
Alysanne didn't visit me often, especially now with so much anger about my indecision.
So, imagine my surprise when a visit was announced so late at night. Aemma, Viserys' 15-year-old wife, resembled my Daella so much.
Aemma suffered many miscarriages, many stillborns. A pain incomparable, understood only by a father who has lost a child.
"Aemma, my dear granddaughter, what brings you so late to my chambers?"
I didn't need an answer; the pain in her eyes told me everything. Another miscarriage.
"Where is Viserys? He should be with you."
"With Lord Otto. They've become great friends, Your Grace, almost inseparable."
"Enough of this 'Your Grace' nonsense; you're my granddaughter, Aemma. You know you can call me Jaehaerys or grandfather." Aemma was a sweet girl with so much pain; it hurt to see her like this, devoid of the same life she once had. "Viserys should be with you right now. And where is little Rhaenyra?"
Rhaenyra was the only daughter of Aemma and Viserys who thrived. Daemon was enamored with the little one, calling her "The Delight of the Realm", and I could only agree. Rhaenyra was a blessing and a beauty, such an energetic and cheerful child. Her laughter reminds me of Baelon, and her commanding ways bring back memories of when Aemon was still a child.
"Rhaenyra is with Daemon, Your... grandfather. I didn't want her to see me like this; she's only three, but she already understands a bit of what's happening. And Viserys... he's changed, changed a lot since we lost his father."
"Does he do this often? Leave you alone?"
"I believe that Lord Otto and his thirteen-year-old daughter, Lady Alicent, make better companions than his wife."
Otto, again. Alysanne didn't like him; Daemon called him terrible names, and Baelon never liked Viserys' growing friendship with Otto.
And now, Baelon was dead, and Otto was my Hand. I am old, slow to see some things, but I see them. And Aemma was, unknowingly, making me open my eyes.
Why was Aemma never an option? Too young? Lacking a dragon? There was something in her, that Targaryen blood prevailing over the Arryn blood, telling me, ah, telling me it was time for her to have the recognition she deserved.
Many times Aemma kept me company, especially in the Sept of Baelor, and I felt comfortable sharing with her the kingdom's problems, things not even Alysanne knew. And I know Aemma always kept them secret; she was trustworthy. One I don't entrust to just anyone.
"What do you think, Aemma, about this struggle for the throne? This issue of who will be my heir?"
"Can I be honest?"
"Always, my dear."
"A folly, grandfather. They act as if the crown is something trivial, a prize, but I don't see it that way. Viserys thinks he'll be king, Rhaenys believes she'll be queen, but do they have what it takes to rule? I love them both, but I'm not blind. It's a petty competition; no one wants to help and care for the people; they just want the title, the power. In the end, it's your decision. Your word is law."
"And what if I don't know what to do?"
"You're the king, grandfather. You always figure it out. See what your heart and mind want; if there's an agreement between them, that's the answer."
And my mind and my heart knew that I had found a fourth option.
The next morning, I summoned everyone for a meeting, knowing it would generate controversy, but it was the right thing to do.
"I have finally decided who will succeed me. I am confident that I will leave the realm in the capable hands of Aemma Arryn, daughter of Daella, my granddaughter."
Chapter 14: POV RHAENYRA TARGARYEN - THE CRUEL
Summary:
Rhaenyra travels back in time
Notes:
Hi! Everything good? Thank you so much for the kudos, the views, the comments, you guys are amazing. I confess that maybe the previous chapter will become its own story, but I'm thinking about it. Here's another chapter, hope you enjoy it!
Chapter Text
RHAENYRA TARGARYEN
I never thought I would die by dragonfire, but there I was, engulfed in the flames of Sunfyre. I never imagined my end would come at the hands of a half-brother; I always thought my final breath would be taken surrounded by my family, after living long years.
I was foolish to think such things, for the moment my father married Alicent, my fate was sealed. Once, I thought we could be a family, that when all the ill feelings passed, we would be able to move forward; but the pain of their betrayal never left me. I became bitter, I became alone, and slowly, Alicent became the schemer she was. I understand that some of her actions were a result of her father's manipulations, but she knew me better than even Daemon did.
In the end, we all made our choices and must face the consequences of them.
I woke up screaming, and many thought it was a nightmare, that I was still calling for my mother. Ser Criston was already my Sworn Shield when I returned to the land of the living, Daemon had been exiled, and Alicent was not yet queen.
Deciding, once I understood what was happening, that if I was ever called Rhaenyra the Cruel and Maegor with Teats, so be it. I would rid myself of all those who had wronged me, who had contributed to the Dance of the Dragons.
I started with Alicent. I wanted to see her suffer, wanted to hear her scream, but the Court should see me as a good princess, and only my enemies should see me as Maegor Come Again.
Though I wanted to make the whore burn, I decided to kill her with my own hands, but without raising suspicions. I entered her chambers in the dead of night; she had already returned from her visits to my father and was sleeping. It wasn't difficult to get there; all the rooms had secret passages, and fortunately, I already knew most of them.
Chapter 15: POV AEMMA ARRYN
Notes:
Hi, how are you?
This isn't a "what if...?" Instead, it's what I've started writing about Aemma becoming queen in place of Viserys. I wanted to know what you think of what I wrote. It's just the beginning, a lot more is being written, but I thought I could show you a little of what I have in mind while I'm still writing it.
Chapter Text
AEMMA ARRYN
There was a time, at the beginning of my engagement to Viserys, when I wished to be a full-blooded Targaryen.
While living with my father and my sister, Amanda, this desire never arose, as my father told stories of my mother where it was hard to see her as anything beyond the Arryn she became.
But then, I had to come to the Red Keep, and here the stories about my mother were different - they hardly existed. In the Vale, my mother was like a queen in my father's eyes; here, she was a princess among many.
However, seeing how my grandparents treated my cousins, I realized that the Targaryen blood showed very little in me, despite my appearance.
I wished to have a dragon, I wished to follow the Fourteen, I wished to be as fearless as Rhaenys, I wished to have the strength of Daemon, and the love for Old Valyria like Viserys.
I wished to have the attention of Jaehaerys and Alysanne. But I was not Rhaenys, the favorite; I was not Viserys, a likely heir, and certainly not Daemon, a warrior. I was Aemma Arryn, a distant cousin, a forgettable granddaughter.
Here, I was nobody. In the Vale, I was everything.
Chapter 16: POV RHAENYRA - Lucerys will be avenged
Summary:
Lucerys is dead and Rhaenyra is angry.
Notes:
Hello, how are you?
I want to thank you for the comments - I'll respond to them soon! - for the kudos, bookmarks and the hits. You guys are awesome, seriously. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Today I bring another chapter from Rhaenyra's point of view. I made some changes to fit what I was planning, okay?
Chapter Text
RHAENYRA TARGARYEN
Lucerys was dead.
My sweet boy had been murdered.
There was a time when I thought I could try to be a good sister to Alicent's children; I taught Aegon to speak Valyrian, I sang Helaena to sleep, I told stories of Old Valyria to Aemond, and then, everything crumbled. After the marriage to Laenor, Alicent decided to block my visits to my siblings, and my father didn't even seem to care.
I tried to be a good sister, but then I should have been a mother, and my children were the top priority in my life. Still, I tried. I tried to make my children and my half-siblings get along, but in vain. The poison had already been drunk, the corruption had already been done, and nothing remained but anger and envy.
And now, the boy I held in my arms, to whom I told stories, who stopped crying when he came to my lap, had killed my beloved son.
"A son for a son. Lucerys will be avenged," Daemon said as the council convened.
"No," I spoke, "I will not start a war; I will end it. Lucerys wouldn't want that."
"Rhaenyra..."
"I have already decided, Daemon. I will be responsible for what happens to those who harmed my son. Stay the course. Soon, the letters will be sent, and the Lords will be called to swear loyalty to their true queen."
|
A banquet. They were going to throw a banquet for Aemond for killing Lucerys, all the supporters of the Greens would be there. And they would all die.
I have my spies; I'm not as bad at politics as I may seem. I've learned from my mistakes. It wasn't hard to orchestrate everything. The Court might have many traitors, and they would pay for it, but the number of servants loyal to me was unusually large, and they would do anything for their Queen.
The only one who would live would be Helaena, my sweet sister. I was informed that she and her children would not attend the banquet. She was as innocent in this story as my Lucerys, caught in the midst of the storm, having to bear the consequences of others' actions. My little sister had a wretched husband, and I would rid her of him.
I arrived at the Keep when the banquet had already been served. They feasted so much that they didn't realize they were being invaded, and those who tried to alert them were dead.

Chapter Text
Hello, how are you? This chapter serves as a promotional piece for my new story, which centers on Aemma as the heir to Jaehaerys - a narrative born from the "what if?" scenario presented in chapter 13. You will find the link in the final notes, in case you are interested in following it.
Jaehaerys had a problem: he needed an heir, but the options he had weren't good.
Rhaenys would be a good queen if it weren't for her ambitious husband.
Viserys was weak, easily manipulated.
Daemon desired fire and blood, likely to plunge the realm into war.
Three options, none viable. But there, amidst the confusion, was Aemma Arryn.
His granddaughter. His fourth option.
OR
Jaehaerys chooses Aemma as the heir instead of Viserys, and the Great Council of 101 never happened.

Chapter 18: Rhaenyra chooses Willem Blackwood
Notes:
Hi, how are you? Sorry for disappearing; the last few months have been hectic. I moved in with my boyfriend (now my husband), work has been crazy, and college was driving me mad. I also ended up focusing a lot on As High As Fire, but now I'm back! I hope you enjoy it!
Chapter Text
Rhaenyra chooses Willem Blackwood
Willem Blackwood was a boy, almost a child, but there he was, killing Jerrel Bracken. Brave, but foolish. Both families had a long-standing feud, and this would only make things worse between them, but there was something… that boy managed to bring a smile to the princess's face in the midst of that boring tour.
Marrying a Blackwood would make the Brackens turn against her, but considering how Lord Humfrey Bracken treated Aegon, it wouldn’t be surprising to see treachery coming from him. Despite everything, she tried to forge ties with them, avoiding a problem since Willem Blackwood would be her consort.
Rhaenyra needed someone fierce, someone capable of killing for her, someone who would defend her at all costs, and that boy, incredibly enough, was that person.
Willem gave her four children: Rhaegar, Viserys, Aemma, and Laenys, her little dragons. He defended her when the snakes tried to spread their poison in the court, he opened her eyes to the world, helped her understand what it would be like to rule Westeros, assisted her in dealing with manipulators, protected her, killed for Rhaenyra, and in the end, died for her.
When she sat on the throne, after a bloody war, with blood on her hands and the pain of loss tormenting her, she let the tears fall. Willem would have liked to see where they had ended up, despite the conflicts along the way.
He promised that she would be queen, and so she was. The queen lost her daughter Laenys, lost her husband, and so many others, but she did everything she could to honor their legacy. Despite the war, Rhaenyra Targaryen is still known as one of the greatest rulers Westeros has ever had.
Chapter 19: LAENOR VELARYON - SEA DRAGONS
Chapter Text
LAENOR VELARYON
When Rhaenyra revealed she was pregnant a year after our wedding, I smiled sincerely for the first time.
I knew the child was unlikely to be mine. Rhaenyra and I tried countless times, but I never managed. We even brought Qarl to bed, in a threesome, in an attempt to get me to release myself inside her.
I know I wasn’t a good husband after Joffrey’s death, but I was grieving. I now understand that Rhaenyra was too, but at the time I was selfish and thought only of myself.
I know Rhaenyra and her sworn shield, Harwin Strong, were in a relationship. We had no secrets between us, her and me, and just as Qarl joined us for dinners, so did Harwin.
When the pregnancy was revealed, we didn’t know whose child it was — we still don’t know who it is; it could be mine, Harwin’s, or maybe Qarl’s. There were countless times we lay together drunk.
We only knew it was a Targaryen, of Rhaenyra’s blood and her future heir. I prayed every night that everything would go well with the birth.
When the pregnancy was announced, I became a different man. I took care of Rhaenyra, protected her from the court’s vipers, acted like a true husband, because despite everything, she was my friend.
Rumors about who the father was spread wildly through the court, fueled by the envious queen, but we held our heads high. Only Rhaenyra and I knew what we had been through.
When the time for the birth came, I was terrified. I have vague memories of how it was. I know my mother and Laena were by Rhaenyra’s side, I remember Daemon with Viserys, and I remember running into that room and grabbing her hand.
I knew of Rhaenyra’s fear, and I wasn’t going to leave her at that moment. I didn’t care what people would say, if it was appropriate or not. Rhaenyra was my wife, she was giving birth to our child, and I would give her all the support in the world.
Jacaerys took nearly twelve hours to be born. It was a long and painful labor, but when I saw Rhaenyra’s smile as she held him in her arms, I knew every second was worth it.
Jacaerys was born with brown hair but with silver streaks, just like my mother. I confess I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw he had the Valyrian features of Rhaenyra; at least that would calm the rumors.
My mother cried when Jacaerys was born, saying she thought she would be the only one in the family to have those traits. But to our surprise, the next two children we had also had the same streaks.
Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey bore a certain resemblance to Harwin, but it was hardly noticeable due to their hair. The queen even tried to spread more rumors about their illegitimacy, but she didn’t succeed, not when everyone said they resembled my mother.
Whether they are legitimately mine or not, we will hardly know, but even if they don’t have my blood, they bear my name. My three sea dragons, my three boys, the reasons for my life.
I promised I would burn the world for them, and so I would, if necessary.
Chapter 20: A New Queen
Chapter Text
AMANDA ARRYN
My sister was dead.
She died giving birth to a child who lived no more than a few hours. She died trying to give the king an heir.
My sister was dead.
She died trying to serve a Crown that treated her with nothing but disrespect. A queen reduced to a broodmare by a man with a dream.
Oh, yes. I knew about his dream. Aemma confided in me in whispers, within the walls of her own chambers. Not even there did she feel safe anymore.
My sister was dead.
And her daughter's lady-in-waiting was visiting her husband, just hours after we had burned her.
My sister was dead.
And now Rhaenyra was the heir, Daemon had been banished once again, and the king had a mistress warming his bed.
My sister was dead.
And I was crawling, like a snake, to the king’s chambers to propose marriage.
A way to keep Rhaenyra safe.
A way to preserve her memory.
A way to keep the Vale bound to Rhaenyra — they would not leave her here, alone, with a queen who had once been her servant.
My sister was dead.
And I was the new queen.
Chapter 21: SAERA TARGARYEN
Chapter Text
When Alyssa Targaryen died, Baelon swore he would never marry again. Unfortunately, that promise didn’t last long. Six months after Alyssa’s death, Baelon found himself betrothed once more. This time, at his mother’s request.
"Marry her, Baelon, please. What she did was wrong, but she only wanted attention. Saera isn’t pregnant, we gave her moon tea in time. Your father wants her to marry one of the men involved, but you know your sister. He’s even considering making her a Silent Sister."
The Prince of Spring refused at first, claiming he couldn’t be held responsible for his sister’s actions. But it was no use. Alysanne cried, and Baelon couldn’t bring himself to say “no” again.
Saera was seventeen at the time, and Baelon was twenty-seven. The princess was not pleased with the marriage - especially because she didn’t like Baelon’s children. She constantly called Viserys the “fat boy” and Daemon “the little demon.”
The marriage took place against both their wills, and the king swore to Saera that if she dishonored her union as she had dishonored her life, she would be banished from King’s Landing, stripped of her titles, and left to beg for alms.
Saera agreed mainly because Baelon satisfied her desires. She didn’t need lords and knights at her feet when she could have a prince.
It wasn’t an easy marriage; the only time they truly got along was in bed. Still, Saera’s relationship with Baelon’s children improved - somewhat. Viserys, in her opinion, remained a dull and withdrawn boy. But Daemon… the little demon had warmed her heart. He became her favorite.
In 86 AC, Saera convinced Baelon to oppose Viserra’s marriage to Lord Manderly. Instead, he proposed that Viserra marry Corlys Velaryon. The wedding took place at the end of that year.
In 87 AC, three years after her union with Baelon, Saera gave birth for the first time: Daeron and Daelys came into the world. Saera tried to be a good mother, and Viserys promised to be the best brother ever, while Daemon declared he would protect them forever.
In 89 AC, Viserra had her first child, Laenor Velaryon, and rumors began to circulate about whom Rhaenys, daughter of Aemon, might marry. By then, Saera had grown fond of Viserys and suggested that a marriage between them could be advantageous.
"Rhaenys will be queen. She needs someone close to her. Someone Valyrian, preferably from the family."
Baelon, already enchanted by his wife, agreed. Aemon approved as well, saying that Viserys would be a good match to balance Rhaenys’s strong temperament. And so, in 90 AC, sixteen-year-old Rhaenys and thirteen-year-old Viserys were wed.
In 91 AC, Viserra gave birth to a daughter, Laena Velaryon, and Saera began making plans for Daemon’s future. At first, she thought of marrying him to Aemma, daughter of Daella, but noticed the way Gael smiled whenever she saw the boy and decided to speak with her mother.
Baelon hadn’t intended to arrange a marriage for Daemon so soon, but he saw that Saera’s plans made sense. It was better to keep his son close than lose him to the queen’s whims. After much insistence, Alysanne finally agreed.
In 92 AC, Aemon died, and Baelon was named heir - even though Rhaenys was married to Viserys. The decision shook their marriage, especially since they were expecting a child at the time.
Saera, though saddened by her brother’s death, felt pleased at the possibility of becoming queen.
At the end of that year, Rhaenys gave birth to her first child: Aemon Targaryen, named in honor of her father.
The years went by quickly. In 93 AC, Viserra had two more daughters: Lucerra and Maella Velaryon.
At thirteen, Gael began receiving ladies-in-waiting, and Aemma Arryn came to court to serve as one of them. Daemon had already begun his training as a warrior - especially now that he had claimed Caraxes, Aemon’s former dragon.
In 94 AC, Rhaenys became pregnant again, and seven-year-old Daeron bonded with a dragon from the Dragonpit, whom he named Areax. In the middle of that year, Rhaenys and Viserys had a daughter: Rhaenyra.
In 97 AC, Daemon and Gael were married - he was sixteen, she was seventeen. At the wedding, ten-year-old Daenys boldly declared in front of everyone that she would marry Laenor, who was only eight at the time. Corlys quickly arranged the betrothal, and Daeron was promised to Laena.
At that same wedding, Lord Blackwood showed interest in Aemma Arryn, and within weeks, a courtship had begun.
In 100 AC, the Good Queen died - the same year Gael became pregnant. When her daughter was born, she named her in honor of her mother.
In 101 AC, Baelon passed away, and the king found himself uncertain about the succession. Saera and Jocelyn convinced Jaehaerys that Rhaenys should be queen, especially since she was married to Viserys and already had two heirs. The king protested, but saw no other option and thus, Rhaenys was named heir.
Saera had her flaws and made many mistakes throughout her life, but her marriage to Baelon changed the course of House Targaryen in a way she would never understand.
Chapter 22: GAEL TARGARYEN
Chapter Text
When King Jaehaerys I declared that Princess Gael, at only twelve years of age, must choose between marriage or a life devoted to the Faith, Queen Alysanne nearly fainted.
All knew how protective the queen was of her youngest daughter, and how much it pained her to think of Gael being taken away from her care.
The young Gael harbored a small fondness for her nephew, Prince Daemon Targaryen, then eleven years old. It was nothing more than a childish infatuation, the queen would say, yet she still feared that her daughter might desire to wed the boy. Daemon was volatile, mischievous, incapable of sitting still for even a moment, and Alysanne did not approve of such behavior in a grandson — much less in a husband for her daughter.
When Gael declared that she would choose marriage, the queen had no doubt what her preference would be. To prevent a union with Daemon, she decided that her daughter would not wed him, but rather his elder brother, Prince Viserys, then fifteen years of age.
The decision surprised the entire family, for Alysanne had consulted neither the king nor Prince Baelon before announcing it. Baelon protested, reminding her that talks were already underway to wed Viserys to Aemma Arryn, daughter of the late Princess Daella Targaryen. But Alysanne was quick to resolve the matter, declaring that Daemon should instead marry the young Aemma. And, as no one dared oppose the queen, the arrangements were made.
In 96 AC, Princess Gael wed Prince Viserys. She was sixteen, and he nineteen. The following year, Prince Daemon took Lady Aemma Arryn as his wife.
In 98 AC, Gael bore her first child, named Aegon, who sadly perished two moons after birth. It was not until 100 AC that she conceived again. Yet the news of her mother’s death brought on a premature labor. Even so, the girl born of it — whom Gael named Alysanne — survived despite her frailty, and grew into a hardy child.
In 103 AC, when Viserys ascended the throne, Gael, now queen, was once more with child, as was Lady Aemma, her lady-in-waiting, who had already borne in 101 AC a son named Baelon. After three long days of labor, the queen delivered her second daughter, Princess Rhaella.
Queen Gael dreamed of having a large family, like that of her parents, and remained steadfast in this purpose:
- In 104 AC, Princess Vaenna was born.
- In 106 AC, came the twins Gaella and Viserra.
- In 107 AC, little Aenora was born.
- In 109 AC, tragedy struck: the queen died only hours after giving birth to her last daughter, Caelys.
After her death, Lady Aemma took on the responsibility of raising the king’s children, alongside her own. She and Daemon had, besides Baelon, three more children: Naerys, Baella, and Monterys.
That same year, 109 AC, Daemon claimed victory in the War for the Stepstones — but the triumph cost him his life.
With no direct male heirs and having lost his brother, the king was in need of a new wife. Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, sought to put forward his daughter Alicent to Viserys, but in vain: the king spurned all attempts. Thus, when the mourning period ended, Viserys announced he would wed Lady Aemma.
The couple had five children:
- Princess Rhaenyra, born in 112 AC.
- Prince Rhaegar, born in 115 AC.
- Princess Visenya and Prince Daemon, twins, born in 118 AC.
- Princess Gael, born in 121 AC.
Though Rhaegar was the firstborn son, it was Princess Alysanne, at the request of her stepmother, who was named heir to the Iron Throne.

Chapter 23: The Wives of King Viserys I Targaryen
Summary:
As you can see, I made some changes regarding the dates. Aemma died earlier, Cerelle was born earlier, and so on. This would be like another dimension.
Chapter Text
The Wives of King Viserys I Targaryen
Much is said about King Viserys I Targaryen, the Peaceful — from his weak hand in ruling the realm to his taste for banquets and tournaments. Yet, what is most often spoken of are the king’s wives.
It is well known that Viserys longed for a large family and had an appetite for young maidens, often mistaking his desires for love.
QUEEN AEMMA ARRYN
82 AC – 103 AC
His first wife was Queen Aemma, whom he married at a young age. Their marriage lasted ten years, though she reigned as queen for only a few months.
Though her time as queen was brief, Aemma was deeply loved by the people — perhaps the most beloved among all his consorts.
She bore two children. The first was Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, born in 97 AC, later named the king’s heir. The second, Prince Baelon, was born in 103 AC and died only a few hours after birth, which also claimed the queen’s life.
Children of Queen Aemma:
-
Princess and Heir Rhaenyra Targaryen, born in 97 AC. Rider of Syrax, she married her uncle, Prince Daemon Targaryen, and bore him seven children.
-
Prince Baelon Targaryen, born in 103 AC, died within hours of his birth.
QUEEN ALICENT HIGHTOWER
88 AC – 107 AC
The most controversial of queens.
Lady Alicent, daughter of the Hand of the King, had served as lady-in-waiting to Queen Aemma. Only two moons after Aemma’s death, the young Princess Rhaenyra discovered Alicent in the king’s chambers, sparking scandal.
Despite the outrage, the king wed Alicent. She gave him four children, yet Viserys still upheld Rhaenyra as heir.
Their marriage lasted but four years, with the queen bearing him a child each year. Rumor held that she awaited only the necessary time before returning to the king’s bed, hoping he would name Aegon his successor. Like Aemma before her, Alicent met her end in childbirth.
Children of Queen Alicent:
-
Prince Aegon Targaryen, born late in 104 AC. Conceived before marriage and deemed a bastard by some. Rider of Sunfyre, he was thought by his grandsire to oppose Rhaenyra, though he was ever close to his sister.
-
Princess Helaena Targaryen, born in 105 AC. Rider of Dreamfyre, remembered as a dreamer. At 17, she wed Loreon Lannister and had three children.
-
Prince Aemond Targaryen, born in 106 AC. Died at 6, attempting to claim Vhagar — his late stepmother’s dragon — during her funeral.
-
Prince Daeron Targaryen, born in 107 AC. Rider of Tyraxes, he became a sworn brother of the Kingsguard.
QUEEN LAENA VELARYON
92 AC – 112 AC
Once more, the king did not keep mourning for long.
Laena Velaryon had been intended as his wife instead of Alicent, and her family quickly offered her to him again.
The queen often lamented her confinement in the Red Keep, longing to fly on Vhagar. Though she had little desire for motherhood so early, she bore two children.
Children of Queen Laena:
-
Princess Baela Targaryen, born in 109 AC. Rider of Moondancer, she later wed her brother, Prince Aerys.
-
Prince Aerys Targaryen, born in 112 AC. Never claimed a dragon. Named heir of Driftmark after his uncle Laenor died childless. He married his sister, Baela.
QUEEN CATHARINA LOUNMOUTH
94 AC – 115 AC
At Princess Rhaenyra’s request, who cared for her six younger siblings, Viserys delayed marrying again.
Two years later, however, he became enamored of the young Catharina Lounmouth during a tourney in the Crownlands. He swiftly made her his queen. Like the king, she loved feasts and promised him many children.
Instead, she bore but one daughter and died scarcely a year later from an unknown illness. Rumors spread that the king was cursed, for all his wives seemed doomed.
Child of Queen Catharina:
-
Princess Alyssa Targaryen, born in 114 AC. Rider of Vermithor, she later married her brother, Prince Maelor Targaryen.
QUEEN JEYNE STRONG
100 AC – 117 AC
Despite whispers of doom, many still sought to see their daughters crowned. Thus, Viserys married Lady Jeyne Strong, daughter of Lord Lyonel Strong.
She was the most reserved of queens — quiet, bookish, and happier reading in the woods than attending courtly revels.
Their marriage lasted two years, ending with her death in childbirth.
Child of Queen Jeyne:
-
Prince Maelor Targaryen, born in 117 AC. Rider of Silverwing, he married his sister, Princess Alyssa.
QUEEN CERELLE LANNISTER
103 AC – 118 AC
Within seven moons, the king wed again.
Lady Cerelle Lannister, young and fair, charmed the king with her laughter. Yet, she harbored an unexplained rivalry with Princess Rhaenyra.
Her reign was the briefest, lasting little more than a year before her death in childbirth.
Child of Queen Cerelle:
-
Princess Aerea Targaryen, born in 118 AC. Frail and sickly, she lived to ten, spending most of her short life bedridden before dying on a stormy winter’s night.
QUEEN ERENA MANDERLY
99 AC – 139 AC
At last, the king claimed Lady Erena Manderly, sister to Lord Manderly, as his final wife.
Of all his consorts, save Aemma, she remained with him the longest. She was the sun of his later years, tending to him during his illness and holding his hand as he breathed his last.
After Princess Rhaenyra’s coronation, she returned North, leaving her children at court.
Children of Queen Erena:
-
Prince Vaegon Targaryen, born in 121 AC. Rider of Alarin, he married his niece, Princess Aemma Targaryen.
-
Princess Maella Targaryen, born in 123 AC. Never claimed a dragon and fled North at the first chance.
-
Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen, born in 123 AC, Maella’s twin. Rider of Maenax, he joined the Kingsguard alongside his brother, Prince Daeron.
Chapter 24: Vaegon & Daella
Chapter Text
Prince Vaegon Targaryen and Princess Daella Targaryen nearly did not marry after the insult he directed at her, but Queen Alysanne remained firm, insisting that the prince would learn to love his sister.
Princess Daella no longer wished to marry Vaegon. He treated her poorly, said cruel things that wounded her deeply, and even humiliated her in public. Daella longed for someone who would treat her as the princess she was, who would see her as the fairest of maidens, and who would live to win her heart. Vaegon, however, was not that person.
Prince Vaegon had no interest in marriage or any kind of affection. He preferred to spend his life studying rather than bind himself to anyone. It had not been his intention to be so cruel to Daella — but she simply could not understand that he did not want her. In his mind, he could never love her.
Even so, the betrothal remained. King Jaehaerys even considered dissolving it and finding another bride for Vaegon, but Queen Alysanne insisted they would stay together, believing their union would bear good fruit. Against his own will, the king eventually agreed.
Thus, on the fifth moon of the year 78 AC, the prince and princess were wed. The marriage was consummated only out of duty, and Vaegon did not return to his wife’s bed until the end of 81 AC, when he finally began to see her differently.
Vaegon discovered that Daella loved to read — though she struggled with it — and that she wished to write better. Over time, he realized she was not foolish, as many thought, but rather that she had difficulty reading because the words seemed to move before her eyes. Moved by curiosity (and perhaps compassion), he began to help her.
Daella, in turn, discovered that Vaegon could be kind when he wished. He began to treat her more gently, dining with her alone in their chambers, bringing her flowers, and reading by her side. He was still the same reserved and rational man, but now he had become more tolerable — and, in a way, more human.
In 81 AC, after the banquet celebrating the birth of Prince Daemon — son of Princess Alyssa and Prince Baelon — Vaegon finally allowed himself to yield to the feelings he had long suppressed and shared Daella’s bed. It happened several more times until the princess discovered she was with child. That was the first of many pregnancies.
In 82 AC, Daella gave birth to Princess Aemma. The young Prince Viserys, son of Alyssa and Baelon, upon holding the infant in his arms, declared she would be his bride, saying, “I feel my heart burn for her.” The king, delighted, sealed the betrothal between them — to Vaegon’s great displeasure, for he thought it far too soon.
In 84 AC, after the death of Princess Alyssa, Daella gave birth to twin boys: Aenar and Aelor, later known as the Dragon Twins. That same year, Princess Viserra was betrothed to Tymond Lannister.
In 85 AC, Princess Saera fled the court, and Viserra became pregnant.
From 86 AC to 101 AC
- Vaegon and Daella had three more children.
- Viserra bore two more.
- Princess Rhaenys married Lord Corlys Velaryon and had two children.
- Princess Aemma married Prince Viserys in 95 AC.
- Prince Aemon, father of Rhaenys, died, and Prince Baelon became heir.
- Princess Gael died, as did Queen Alysanne.
- Prince Daemon wed Lady Naerys Lannister, daughter of Viserra and Tymond.
In 101 AC, after Baelon’s death, Vaegon became heir — though against his will. He assumed the position of Hand of the King and claimed Silverwing, while Daella claimed Dreamfyre.
In 103 AC, with another daughter born, Vaegon ascended the throne as King Vaegon I, and Daella was crowned his queen. Prince Aenar became heir and was betrothed to his sister, Princess Maelys.
It is said that the reign of Vaegon I Targaryen was one of great prosperity, upholding his father’s legacy of wisdom and balance.

Chapter 25: Rhaenys & Baelon
Chapter Text
It is said that in the year 90 AC, Prince Aemon Targaryen grew increasingly irritated by the sheer number of suitors seeking the hand of his daughter, Princess Rhaenys. He knew, of course, that she would have to marry eventually, but now, at sixteen, the letters proposing betrothal had tripled — even men as old as the king himself wished to court her.
And among them was one lord who seemed to be capturing the princess’s heart. Rhaenys spent her days speaking of Lord Corlys Velaryon and his many feats.
Lord Corlys had once sought marriage with Princess Daella, and before that, with Princess Saera, though neither negotiation ever reached fruition. Aemon knew Corlys desired his bloodline upon the throne, and now the man had set his sights on his little girl.
The prince would not allow that to happen. Soon, the princess would be attending the king’s royal progress, and if Aemon was right, she would ask the king’s blessing to wed Corlys.
It is said that one evening, Prince Aemon and his wife, Princess Jocelyn, dined with Prince Baelon, and two days later, the betrothal between Baelon and Princess Rhaenys was announced. Queen Alysanne confided to her ladies that Rhaenys had a brief infatuation with her uncle and that Aemon had used it to his advantage. King Jaehaerys I, on the other hand, remarked that Baelon was incapable of refusing Aemon anything, and that the arrangement was the elder brother’s doing.
Regardless, by the end of 90 AC, the two were wed.
It is said that although young Prince Viserys was unsettled by his father’s marriage, he was also the most welcoming toward the princess. He toasted to their union and wished them a long and happy marriage. Prince Daemon, however, sulked through the entire wedding. Princess Jocelyn was overheard saying the boy feared his mother’s place would be stolen.
Still, within months, Prince Daemon came to adore the princess — now his stepmother. He followed her everywhere, even riding with her on Meleys. It was common to see the little prince imitating her gestures and trying to be just like her. He even stopped causing trouble for his nurses after receiving a stern lecture from the princess.
In 92 AC, after Prince Aemon’s death, Prince Baelon was to be named heir. Yet rumors spread that he and the king had a heated quarrel, and servants whispered that the prince had declared: “The crown belongs to one alone — my wife. Rhaenys is the true heir to the Iron Throne. If you take that from her, know this: my sons and I shall never set foot in King’s Landing again while you live. And when I am named king, I shall abdicate in her favor.”
After that, Princess Rhaenys was indeed named heir, with her husband as her most loyal supporter. That same year, she discovered she was with child.
In early 93 AC, the princess gave birth to her first daughter, Rhaenyra Targaryen, her heir. That same year, Prince Viserys married Lady Aemma Arryn, daughter of Princess Daella Targaryen and Lord Rodrik Arryn.
The girl was only eleven years old, and at Princess Rhaenys’s request — supported by her husband — the marriage was not consummated until Aemma’s fourteenth birthday.
The following year, the princess became pregnant again, giving birth to twins — Aemon and Aegon Targaryen.
Years passed peacefully, without further marriages or children, until 97 AC, when Queen Alysanne decided Prince Daemon should wed Lady Rhea Royce. It was the first time queen and princess had ever quarreled so fiercely.
It is said Princess Rhaenys told the queen: “Daemon will not marry any woman he does not wish to. He is my son! You are doing this because you think he wants to wed Gael. You are wrong! And mark my words — one day that girl will grow, and she will suffocate under your ways.”
Shortly after, the betrothal of Prince Daemon to Princess Rhaenyra was announced, to take place when she turned sixteen. From that day forward, princess and queen were never the same again.
In 98 AC, the princess bore another child — a daughter named Kaella Targaryen.
In 99 AC, Lady Aemma Arryn became pregnant for the first time, giving birth to twins — Daella and Alyssa Targaryen. That same year, Princess Gael died, and Queen Alysanne retired to Dragonstone, where she passed away in 100 AC.
In 101 AC, during a tournament, Prince Baelon drank from the princess’s cup and soon began to complain of stomach pains. It was discovered he had been poisoned. Fortunately, the maesters managed to save him.
Prince Viserys and Prince Daemon went sleepless for days searching for the culprit, but in vain — every time they found a suspect, the person was already dead.
Prince Baelon recovered swiftly, and security within the Red Keep was heavily reinforced.
That same year, Ser Otto Hightower befriended Prince Viserys, though the friendship did not last long. Otto began to slander Prince Daemon, and Viserys was fiercely protective of his brother. The first time Otto called Daemon “Maegor come again,” Viserys accused him of treason and demanded his head.
The Hightower family was banished from King’s Landing, allowed to return only when strictly necessary — and only Lord Hightower and his sons were permitted to visit.
In 103 AC, King Jaehaerys passed away in his sleep, and Rhaenys was crowned Queen. It is said her reign was a prosperous one, with Baelon as her Hand and their children as her greatest defenders.
THE CHILDREN OF QUEEN RHAENYS I TARGARYEN AND KING BAELON TARGARYEN
- Queen Rhaenyra I Targaryen – born 93 a.C
Queen Rhaenyra I’s dragon egg hatched only months after her birth, and she named the young creature Syrax. She was known as the most beautiful of princesses — pampered, adorned, and fond of jewels. As her mother’s heir, she began her training for rule early, though she still spent much of her time with her siblings and nieces.
At sixteen, she married her half-brother, Prince Daemon, and bore him six children:
- Prince Jacaerys Targaryen, heir apparent – married his sister Princess Baela Targaryen, rider of Vermax.
- Princess Baela Targaryen – rider of Moondancer; married Jacaerys and had three children: Rhaella, Alyssa, and Aelys.
- Prince Lucerys Targaryen – rider of Arrax; married Lady Vienna Velaryon, becoming her consort. They had four children: Laenor, Rhaenys, Corwyn, and Maelys.
- Princess Visenya Targaryen – rider of Vermithor; married her cousin Prince Daeron Targaryen, with whom she had two sons: Maelor and Viserra.
- Prince Aerion Targaryen – rider of Kaeneron; joined the Night’s Watch of his own free will.
- Prince Rhogar Targaryen – rider of Baleon; married his cousin Lady Valaena Targaryen, having five children: Vaelys, Jaehaerys, Gael, Alysanne, and Rhaena.
Queen Rhaenyra I was remembered as the finest ruler of Westeros after the reign of her mother, Queen Rhaenys I.
- Prince Aemon Targaryen – born 94 a.C
Proud of his royal blood, Aemon longed to be known as a great warrior. He claimed the dragon Vontrax at eight years old and fought bravely in his mother’s name, defending her realm with fire and blood.
He never married nor fathered bastards, though rumors whispered of liaisons with certain knights of the Kingsguard.
- Prince Aegon Targaryen – born 94 a.C
Unlike his twin, Aegon was quiet and contemplative. He cared little for battle or bloodshed, preferring to spend his days studying the histories of Old Valyria and assisting his brother Viserys with his model of the city.
He never claimed a dragon, nor desired to. “My brothers belong to the skies,” he once said, “but I belong to the earth.”
At fifteen, he wed Lady Daella, daughter of Viserys and Aemma, and had one son — Ser Taerin Targaryen.
- Princess Kaella Targaryen – born 98 a.C
Known for her fiery temper and haughty demeanor, Kaella was a terror in court but turned gentle and kind whenever Gaemon Targaryen, son of Viserys and Aemma, was near.
Deeply infatuated with him, she gave herself to Gaemon at sixteen, causing a great scandal — for he was betrothed to his own sister, Alyssa.
To everyone’s astonishment, Lady Alyssa thanked the gods, claiming relief, and fled north, where she found love with Cregan Stark.
Kaella and Ser Gaemon had four children: Daeron, Jaegor, Kaelyx, and Naera.
After her father’s death, Kaella claimed the mighty Vhagar as her mount.
Chapter 26: Excerpts from The Diary of Queen Rhaenyra I
Chapter Text
Excerpts from The Diary of Queen Rhaenyra I,
found in Dragonstone in the year 264 AC.
The manuscript was written entirely in Valyrian, and its proper translation took nearly two years to complete. These records reveal intimate details about the Queen’s marriage to Prince Consort Laenor Velaryon, as well as the rumors of bastardy that surrounded her children.
“15th day of the eighth moon, 113 AC
Daemon deceived me again. I trusted him — I truly believed he loved me. I thought he was taking me to the city to learn about the people, to understand how they saw me, to help me overcome my fear of childbirth. But everything he did was only to draw my father’s attention.
He abandoned me in a brothel, fled like a coward, and still had the audacity to claim he had defiled me. Thankfully, I remain a maiden.
When Ser Harwin brought me back to the Red Keep, I went straight to my father’s chambers. If anyone had seen me there, it would have been my ruin. I had to think quickly; I needed him to know the truth before the lies reached his ears.
I told him everything — from beginning to end. I cried in his arms, feeling Daemon’s betrayal shatter my heart. My father let me stay in the rooms within his own — where I used to sleep as a child when I was afraid to be alone. He summoned the servants and allowed me to wear some of my mother’s old gowns. He said Alicent had never set foot in those chambers, that they were sacred — belonging only to him, my mother, and me.
By morning, Otto Hightower came running to gossip, but my father defended me. He declared I had spent the entire night there, that Daemon had been with some Valyrian-looking whore, and — much to my surprise — accused him of treason for daring to spy on me and bring false accusations against the Princess Heir. My father stripped him of his title as Hand and banished him to Oldtown.
Alicent confronted me in the Godswood, where any servant could have overheard, but I made it clear I had been with my father all night — and if she doubted me, she could ask him herself. I know they quarreled afterward; I do not know what was said, but she left his chambers in tears.”
“17th day of the eighth moon, 113 AC
Father questioned Daemon, who spewed vile lies about what happened — and now my uncle has been banished. I never thought I would feel relief at such a thing, but I am glad not to have him near me. The pain remains, though. I always loved my uncle; I thought he loved me too. But he only used me.
Now I must marry. My father wishes me to wed Ser Laenor, my cousin — but he does not fancy women, at least not in the way that would put children in my belly. Still, I have no better options. To spurn the Velaryons again would be a grave mistake.
I must find a way to have heirs with Ser Laenor. I need children. I need power within the court. My rage blinded me, and Otto grew stronger because of it.
I cannot let Aegon take what is mine. He may be only a child, but the throne belongs to me — and no one will take it from me. Perhaps if I draw closer to my brothers, they will stand by my side. I do not trust Alicent, and I know her father has been filling her head with lies.”
“27th day of the eighth moon, 113 AC
I am to wed Laenor in six moons. It shall be a grand affair. Father is overjoyed! Alicent has been quiet since their quarrel, but I can sense something brewing.
I have begun visiting my brothers in the nursery. Aegon is talkative, Helaena is shy, and Aemond adores tales of dragons. I intend to take them on their first flight soon—to be a good sister to them.
Ser Criston Cole confessed his love for me, begging me to flee with him. I refused, of course. He did not take it well, he seized my arm hard enough to leave a mark, but Ser Harwin saw.
I told my father and Alicent what happened. Ser Criston was stripped of his white cloak and executed for raising a hand against a princess of the realm. Alicent was shaken by his death, as though she blamed me for his downfall. I know he was with her before he came to me.”
“19th day of the second moon, 114 AC
Laenor and I are married. It was a beautiful ceremony — save for the moment Alicent entered dressed in green. Since Ser Criston’s death, she has treated me differently, whispering rumors through the court. Fortunately, I am better protected now: six ladies-in-waiting, loyal knights, and Ser Harwin as my sworn shield.
I am not yet a master of the game of thrones, but I have more allies than she does. More importantly, I have her children by my side. Aegon follows me everywhere, Helaena is like a little reflection of myself, and Aemond often sleeps in my chambers when he is frightened.
Father disapproved of her choice of dress but held his tongue to avoid conflict. Laenor, however, ‘accidentally’ spilled wine on it, forcing her to change, and Father remarked that she ought to wear our house colors.
“You are no longer a Hightower, and you are not at war, my dear wife,” he said.
Daemon appeared as well. Now widowed, he asked me for a dance. I accepted, out of courtesy — but a small part of me still melted. In a foolish moment, I asked him to take me to Dragonstone and make me his wife. He did not. Instead, he fled again, and now he is betrothed to Laena Velaryon.
He killed a man for her. My heart is no longer his — it is my own. Daemon Targaryen means nothing to me now. I have bled enough for him. To me, Daemon Targaryen is dead.”
“25th day of the twelfth moon, 114 AC
I am a mother. A mother to a beautiful boy, with brown hair and eyes as dark as Laenor’s.
It was terrifying to bring him into this world — I cried, I screamed — but now he lies beside me, sleeping peacefully. Jacaerys Velaryon, soon to be Jacaerys Targaryen. My heir. My little dragon.
Rumors say he is a bastard, but Laenor was the only man I ever lay with — Ser Joffrey does not count; he merely tended to Laenor’s needs so that Laenor could do his duty with me.
Laenor insists he was born with dark hair as well, like Rhaenys, and that it only lightened when he turned ten. I do not recall him without silver hair, but I trust my husband. He tells this story to everyone at court, reminding them that my mother was an Arryn and that Rhaenys is a Baratheon.
Jacaerys Velaryon. I would burn the world for him.”
This was the final page of the diary. No other entries were ever found, if indeed any existed. Even so, these writings are enough to understand the relationship between Queen Rhaenyra I and Prince Consort Laenor Velaryon.
Rumors of bastardy surrounded the Queen’s children, particularly because her first children were born with brown hair. It is said that Queen Alicent herself helped spread such tales, having long held a grudge against the princess — for reasons still uncertain.
Despite Alicent’s attempts to rally support for her son, Prince Aegon, few remained by her side. That number dwindled further when Aegon and his siblings publicly swore loyalty to their sister on her twentieth nameday — astonishing the court and even the royal family.
Rhaenyra I’s ascension to the Iron Throne occurred with little resistance, bolstered by the loyalty of her brothers and even her uncle, Daemon Targaryen — who, though he kept his distance thereafter, swore to defend her reign.
Queen Rhaenyra I Targaryen was the first ruling queen of the Seven Kingdoms, and her legacy endures to this day.
She was an extraordinary monarch — uniting Dorne through diplomacy, extending rights to the poor, and founding schools and hospitals. Under her rule, King’s Landing was cleansed and transformed; from the first years of her reign onward, it was never again plagued by the stench that had once defined it.
The Children of Queen Rhaenyra I and Prince Consort Laenor Velaryon
King Jacaerys I Targaryen (114 AC – 177 AC)
Rhaenyra’s firstborn, known as a brilliant diplomat. He aided his mother in forging alliances with Dorne, arranging the marriage of his brother, Prince Joffrey Velaryon, to Princess Aliandra Martell, ruler of Dorne.
A dragonrider of Vermax, he was often seen flying at dawn beside his sister, Princess Aemma.
He married Lady Baela Targaryen, daughter of Laena Velaryon and Daemon Targaryen, and had four children: Daella, Caenys, Monterys, and Valerion.
Prince Lucerys Velaryon, Lord of Driftmark (115 AC – 181 AC)
Known as the “Pearl of Driftmark,” he was beloved across the realm for his charm and kindness.
Though gentle by nature, he found himself in scandal—caught in bed with his betrothed, Lady Rhaena Targaryen, and his uncle, Prince Aemond Targaryen. He declared he would flee if he could not wed them both.
A dragonrider of Arrax, he often flew alongside his husband Aemond (on Vhagar) and his wife Rhaena (on Morning).
They had two children: Aenora and Jaehaerys.
Prince Consort Joffrey Velaryon (117 AC – 183 AC)
One of the mightiest warriors of Rhaenyra I’s reign, second only to his uncle Aemond. Joffrey loved the thrill of combat and swore to protect his mother with his dragon, Tyraxes.
He found love in Princess Aliandra Martell and fathered four children: Dorian, Qyle, Alyene, and Soren.
Princess Aemma Velaryon (120 AC – 187 AC)
As beautiful as her namesake, she was adored by the people. Often seen flying upon her dragon, Silverwing, she also loved walking among the smallfolk.
She wed her uncle, Prince Daeron Targaryen, and had three daughters: Rhae, Alysanne, and Daenerys.
Princess Visenya Velaryon (129 AC – 190 AC)
Twin to Aemma, yet her opposite in spirit. Visenya lived up to her fierce name. When not flying on her dragon, Vermithor, she was found training or dueling with her brother Joffrey. She was feared like her uncle Daemon and as scandalous as Saera Targaryen.
She was forced to wed her uncle, Aegon Targaryen, after giving him her maidenhood and becoming pregnant at seventeen — he was thirty and widowed.
They had five children: Aemon, Rhaenys, Aella, Baelon, and Maeron.
Prince Viserys Velaryon (122 AC – 200 AC)
The youngest child of Queen Rhaenyra I and Prince Consort Laenor Velaryon, named after his grandfather, King Viserys I Targaryen.
A scholar by nature, though skilled with the sword, he preferred flying his dragon, Baelys, to spending time at court.
Gentle and thoughtful, he shocked the realm at fifteen by asking for his aunt Helaena’s hand — she was twenty-two and unmarried. Greater still was the surprise when she accepted, after being courted by him for two years.
They had two children: Jaella and Rhaenyra.
Queen Rhaenyra I Targaryen and Prince Consort Laenor Velaryon are remembered as the grandparents of Westeros, for their blood still flows in the veins of many to this very day.
