Work Text:
She was sitting at her desk on the Normandy starship, gazing out the window at the endless stars beyond, reflecting. She’d become a true trailblazer, an intergalactic pioneer. She was the first known being to make contact with the ancient Prothean race; the first human SPECTRE, a special agent for the interspecies Citadel Counsel; and she sought to be the first commander to return her crew from a doomsday mission through the Mu Relay, a mysterious mass effect relay that launched ships thousands of lightyears seemingly into nowhere, never to return. The gravity of it all was immense – forget the proverbial monkey on her shoulders, this was a full-grown Krogan back there.
Someone rang the bell at her cabin door. She was eager to embrace the distraction. “Come in.”
The door slid open and Liara walked in. Shepard’s heart fluttered, realizing she was alone in her cabin with her crush.
“Shepard?” Liara began. “May I speak with you?” There was that voice she loved, that soft yet sultry voice.
“I was just thinking about you,” Shepard lied. She hadn’t been thinking about Liara, but she definitely preferred to be. And she wanted Liara to know she was important to her, even at a time like this.
“I have been thinking about you too, and what we’re about to face,” Liara said. “I don’t know what is going to happen on Ilos. I hope we will stop Saren, of course, but part of me fears we are already too late.” She paused, as if letting that point sink in. “There’s something I must tell you,” she continued, “in case we fail.”
Shepard’s stomach was suddenly filled with butterflies, but she kept a straight face. “Go ahead, I’m listening.”
Liara timidly approached. “These could be our last moments together. Our last chance to show each other how we feel. I want this to be special.”
These were the exact words Shepard was hoping for, but also the words that she feared. “I want this, Liara. I do. But are you sure you’re ready?” Liara, though older than Shepard in true terms, was younger than her in Asari terms, more like a woman in her early 20s. Shepard was amazed by how wise Liara could be, and yet so naïve. She found it incredibly endearing, but she also felt a little guilty, as if she were robbing the cradle.
Liara was now face to face with her, and she put her hand gently on Shepard’s elbow. “I have never been more sure of anything in my life,” she said. “Will you join with me, Shepard? Let our bodies and minds unite.”
She couldn’t resist an invitation like that. “Just tell me what to do.”
There was very little telling, at least at first. Liara launched herself at Shepard, taking her into her arms and gripping her in an impassioned kiss. Shepard knew that Asari were capable of lovemaking in the human tradition. She’d actually had a brief tryst with Sha’ira, the Asari consort at the Citadel, and it was just the like human lovemaking she had always known – though perhaps more intense, as Sha’ira seemed to know every pleasure point on the human female body and stimulated them like a goddamned expert. Yet she and Sha’ira had joined bodies only, whereas Liara suggested joining minds. Shepard was intrigued, but so far, the physical intimacy was proving to be more than enough.
Liara was an expert kisser – lush lips, lively tongue, and just the right amount of pressure. “You’re amazing, Liara,” Shepard said. “Where did you learn to kiss like this?”
“Do you really want to know now?” Liara asked. She pushed Shepard down onto the bed and crawled on top.
“Good point,” Shepard said. “Tell me later.”
The kissing resumed, paused only for the lovers to remove their clothes. Liara stood, while Shepard remained seated at the edge of the bed. She watched Liara undress and admired her body – curvier than Shepard’s, but still quite toned – and marveled at how she seemed so human, despite the blue skin. She had breasts and nipples like a human – the curvaceous ass muscles of a human – and the tight-looking pussy of a human.
Liara caught her staring. “Like what you see, Shepard?” she asked.
“You’re beautiful, Liara.” Her blue skin had almost a sensual glow, and Shepard wanted to run her hands all over her wonderful curves.
Liara stepped closer, allowing Shepard to do just that. While seated, Shepard’s eyes were at the level of Liara’s navel. She placed her hands on Liara’s hips, feeling her soft smooth skin –slightly different than human skin, slick, as if recently moisturized. She kissed Liara’s abdomen while running her hands around her hips to her voluptuous ass cheeks, perfectly lifted and round. She continued to kiss between her navel and groin, giving furtive glances up to check Liara’s reaction. Liara’s eyes were closed, and her faint smile signaled enjoyment.
“Liara,” Shepard said. “I’m starting to realize – I have no idea what Asari enjoy in bed.”
“Despite that,” she replied, “you’re off to an impressive start.”
Shepard laughed. “Don’t make fun of me,” she scolded. She smacked Liara’s ass, causing her to shudder. “I want to know what makes you tick.” With Sha’ira there was no intimacy, only sex. She’d enjoyed herself but hadn’t thought much about her partner in that exchange. Here – she wanted to make Liara feel amazing.
“I mean it, Shepard,” Liara said. “Don’t worry about me, I’m rather enjoying myself so far. I can explain it afterward – but if something brings you pleasure, rest assured it will pleasure me as well.”
“You just said the magic words,” Shepard responded, grabbing her by the waist and tossing her onto the bed.
“Oh, Shepard,” Liara said, but her words were quickly muffled by her moans – Shepard had pressed her mouth against her pussy, drenching it with arousal and affection.
“You know, I tend to think I’m quite good at this,” Shepard said between mouthfuls of muff. “I hope your Asari anatomy agrees.”
Liara had begun to squeal. “Oh, yes, She- Shepard. Mmm! You’re – oh, goddess! – quite good!”
Shephard had introduced a finger, pressing it into the Asari’s pussy. Her tongue remained focus on the clitoris, identical to a human’s apart from the bluish hue. She was writing her name with her tongue, as if claiming this pussy all for her own. She increased speed with her finger, soon pushing it all the way inside. The lubrication was ideal, warm and slick, so she soon felt comfortable adding another finger.
“Oh, Shepard,” Liara gushed, “what are you doing to me?” Shepard picked up speed, curling her fingers in an upward motion. Did Asari have a g-spot? She was about to find out. Liara started bucking with her hips, her lovely ass muscles flexing and growing firm. “Oooooh!” she exclaimed. Shepard moved in rhythm with Liara’s bucking hips, continuing to lick her with her tongue and fuck her with her hand. “I think I’m – I think – oooooh!”
Shepard recognized the telltale signs of an orgasm – a big one – and didn’t let up until Liara finally settled down, breathing hard, but convulsing on occasion with tiny aftershocks. When the orgasm had passed, Shepard crawled up to lay next to her lover. She gazed into her pale blue eyes.
“So, what do you think?” she asked.
“I think – I think I just had my first orgasm,” Liara said.
“Expecting more?” Shepard teased. “I’m up for the challenge.”
“No, no, I mean – I’ve never had one before.”
“Oh,” Shepard said. “You mean, never?” She felt a touch guilty about Liara’s inexperience.
“I suppose I should have told you,” Liara said. “I’m – er, was – a virgin.”
It wasn’t a total surprise, but Shepard figured Liara would have said something. “I see,” Shepard replied. She suddenly realized how vulnerable Liara must be feeling. She leaned in and kissed her, slow and sensually to express their closeness. “I’m glad I was your first, Liara,” she said. “I hope I didn’t disappoint.”
“You didn’t, Shepard,” Liara assured her. “And thank you.”
“But – hadn’t you ever explored your body before?” she asked. “At least, on your own?”
“That’s what I was going to tell you,” Liara said. “Asari sexuality is different than most species.”
“Go on,” Shepard said.
“Asari sexual pleasure is never a solitary experience – we require partnership to feel sexual relief – it’s the call of our biological imperative to procreate.” Shepard raised an eyebrow, and Liara quickly went on, “Not that what we did has any risk of procreation. But partnership is an essential ingredient.”
“Okay,” Shepard said with some relief. “Then – tell me how this all works for you.” She nuzzled her head on Liara’s shoulder, her face pleasingly close to her breast. She enjoyed the rise and fall of Liara’s chest as she listened.
“When Asari start to – catch feelings,” Liara said, “our bodies adapt. Our minds read signals from the object of our desire – brain waves, pheromones, DNA traces from physical contact – and our physiology morphs to be suitable for intimacy.”
“So – your body has been adapting to mine?” Shepard asked.
“Yes,” Liara said. “It’s what allows us to bond with various species, and it sharpens our abilities to attract a mate. I – noticed the adaptation not too long after I met you, Shepard, after I quickly realized I found you alluring. The process accelerated after we join minds so I could observe your vision from the Prothean beacon. That moment of closeness was meaningful to me. I – hope that all doesn’t sound too creepy.”
“No, it’s sweet,” Shepard reassured her. “Just – different. But also kind of amazing.”
Liara smiled. “We also use the mind connection for sexual intimacy. It’s – even more intense for us than physical sex, and it’s our method of procreation – when both species are willing.”
“You – reproduce mentally?” Shepard asked.
“Yes, at least that’s how it begins,” Liara explained. “When two partners meld minds, both desiring to create a child, that’s when the minds exchange genetic information and conception occurs. New life then begins to form in the Asari’s womb.”
“And what if both partners aren’t willing?” Shepard queried.
“The conception will not occur. It’s a natural safeguard against unwanted pregnancy – and against single parenthood, as evolution has naturally selected for offspring with two parents to have the best chance at survival.”
“Incredible,” Shepard mused, but she had something more relevant in mind. “So, mind melding – if not intended for procreation – can be entirely recreational?”
Liara gave her a suggestive side-eyed glance. “Why, yes, it can” she said.
“And you said it’s more intense?” Shepard asked.
“Yes,” Liara said. “Intimacy has fewer limits when we join not just bodies, but also our minds. In the space we then find ourselves – anything is possible.”
“Anything?” Shepard raised an inquiring eyebrow.
“Whatever our minds can imagine,” Liara replied, “it can be so.”
Shepard looked into Liara’s eyes. “That sounds incredible. But what’s the catch?”
“The catch,” Liara began, pausing for a breath, “is that opening our minds to each other requires a deep commitment. The bond that forms is significant to the Asari people, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Most Asari only meld minds with their partner when making the relationship – official.”
Shepard paused to consider. Was she ready to make things “official” with Liara? Is that was Liara was hinting at? She liked Liara – a lot – but she was wary of the lesbian stereotype about jumping pussy-first into relationships. Plus, she was worried she was taking advantage of Liara’s innocence. And something else was bothering her. “But – I thought we’d already joined minds,” she said. “You know, when you told me to ‘embrace eternity?’”
Liara shifted a little. “That’s true,” she began. “And I probably should’ve given you more warning about that experience. While intimate, a joining of the minds is not always sexual – in Asari culture, parents and children, siblings, and even close friends may join minds in a particularly meaningful moment. When you and I joined – it was to share your experience of the Prothean beacon so we could try to understand it’s meaning. But in doing so,” she shifted again, “I’ll admit it deepened my affection for you. The closeness was a little – intimidating.”
“I felt close to you, too,” Shepard said. “I figured that was kind of a side effect.”
“It can be a side effect or a main effect, depending on your point of view,” Liara said. “But to me – it was overwhelming. I feel like now I can be honest with you, Shepard, but do you recall me feeling dizzy when our bond had been broken?”
“I do,” Shepard said. “I was worried about you for a minute.”
“Well, to be frank, I wasn’t actually dizzy. I was actually – intensely aroused, and I feared I might just spring upon you if I didn’t get away.”
Shepard laughed. “You mean, like you sprung upon me just a few minutes ago?”
“Yes, much like that,” Liara agreed, “but back then we had an audience. And I think we would’ve made Lieutenant Alenko rather jealous.”
“We already have made him jealous,” Shepard said. She was enjoying the banter and starting to get turned on again. She leaned over and kissed Liara, playfully biting her lower lip while squeezing her breast. “Together,” she said, “We’ll make the world jealous.”
“I believe that we could,” Liara replied. “But only if you’re mine.”
“You’re talking about – a relationship?” Shepard asked.
“I am, and I’m ready,” Liara said. “I don’t wish to pressure you, Shepard, and I understand if you choose to decline – as a famous war hero with supermodel looks, I know you must have many options. But I need you to know – if you want me, I’m yours.”
She wasn’t sure if it was the sentiment or the flattery, but Liara had won her over. She mounted Liara, pinning her down on the bed, and gazing deep into her eyes. “Take me,” Shepard said.
Liara smiled. “Very well,” she said. “Embrace eternity.”
Liara’s eyes became murky, darkening until they grew entirely black. They were like a void, and Shepard was falling into it. Reality melted away as Shepard became lost in Liara’s eyes, entering a new realm of existence. Liara was there, naked and beautiful, her skin absolutely glowing in contrast to the darkness. Shepard rediscovered herself, noticing her body rematerialize in this new space. They were two beings, weightless, as if floating in the void of space. She could move simply by willing it – and she willed herself to glide closer to Liara. Their forms were reflections of their physical beings, naked, and somehow illuminated against the dark.
Liara smiled. “Welcome to eternity,” she said, “a creation of our minds.”
“What – what exactly happens here?” Shepard asked.
“Whatever we want,” Liara replied. “Would you like to create some scenery?”
“I’m enjoying the view already,” Shepard said. She wrapped her arms around Liara’s floating form. Sensations were magnified – the pleasure of a simple touch of Liara’s back and waist was somehow sublime. They kissed and fondled each other, their bodies gliding through the void in a swirl of ecstasy. They did everything they could think of – exploring each other with their mouths and hands, licking and biting and penetrating and feeling. Swirls of stars and violet haze surrounded them, but to the lovers in the void, none of that existed. They pressed themselves together, minds and bodies as one, each touch its own celebration of intimacy. It was like a full body orgasm, except constantly.
Shepard couldn’t tell if time had stretched on forever or if no time had passed at all. Their legs were wrapped together, this upper lips and lower lips locked in parallel kisses, when Shepard finally asked, “Liara, does this ever have to end?”
Liara looked deeply, solemnly into her eyes. “Only to return to the living world,” she said.
Shepard held her tight. “I’m not sure I want to,” she said.
Liara’s pale blue eyes looked sad. “The world needs you, Shepard.”
“Then I guess we should go,” Shepard said. “As long as you’ll stay there by my side.”
“Every step of the way,” Liara confirmed.
The illusion dissolved, and the world around them came back into focus. They were back in Shepard’s cabin, lying on her bed in an embrace. Shepard glanced at the clock on the bedside table, realizing that in fact, no time had passed at all.
“Perfect,” Shepard said. “There’s still time.” She turned back to spoon Liara, who was awake but silent. Liara shifted, pressing her body closer into Shepard for warmth. In this peaceful position, they fell asleep.
***
Liara awoke to a dimly lit cabin, realizing she was alone in the bed. She sat up, noticing Shepard fully dressed in her Alliance uniform. She was leaning against her desk, watching her.
“Shepard,” Liara said. “You should have woken me.”
Shepard smiled. “But I enjoyed watching you sleep.”
“What time is it?”
“It’s almost time, but I think we have a few minutes,” Shepard said.
Liara sat back against the pillows, reflecting on all they had just experienced. “By the goddess, that was incredible, Shepard.”
“You were incredible,” Shepard replied. They smiled at each other admiringly, dopily drinking in the post-coital glow.
A voice interrupted over the intercom. “Five minutes ETA to the Mu Relay,” said Joker.
Liara climbed off the bed and reached for her clothing. “I had better go. Duty calls. You would not want to keep Joker waiting.” Shepard watched her get dressed, gazing fondly. As Liara finished up, she said, “Shepard? Whatever happens on Ilos, I just wanted to say – thank you. For everything.”
Before she could reply, Liara hurried away out the cabin door. She didn’t like to see her go, but at least she could enjoy the view.
