Work Text:
Diana awakes and tries to wipe the sleep from her eyes. She feels the ground tremor beneath her feet. This is not her room. Panic grips her heart as flashes of rope and gunshots and her mothers and her own muffled screams run through her mind. Theres a man in front angrily muttering to himself as he furiously drives the car. Her body racks with sobs and her vision blurs. She feels the car stop and strong arms wrap around her.
"Oh shit, er, shush shush, Di, it's all going to be okay." She begins wailing. The uncomfortable seatbelt material rubs against her skin constricting her. Shes terrified that cold metal will be pressed against her head. But it's just Adam, looking like hes about to start crying with her. She grabs him in a bone crushing hug.
"A-adam, I'm scared, he's going to hurt me and mummy." She blubbers.
"No, no Di, shush." He rocks her back and forth, "No ones gonna hurt you, never again, I promise."
"Really?"
"Yes"
"O-okay"
They stay like that, holding eachother on a silent road in the middle of no where, for half an hour, until Dianas sobs turn into even breaths as she succumbs to sleep. Adam straps her back into the seat, careful not to make her stir.
He starts up the car. Only around 20 minutes to jigsaws weird death lair. They could go without Diana ever waking back up. He looks at her in the backseat, with tear tracks still on her little face. Adam sighs and turns the car around.
Despite being a private investigator Adam can honestly say he'd never seen it coming. Lawrence had been just as traumatised, clinging to him desperately in the hospital like he could slip away back to that shit-filled hell at any minute. Apparantly Adam had been missing for two weeks, having been in a comatose state after being unceremoniosly dumped outside the hospital by an unmarked van. Practically his first words to Adam had been "Move in with me." Adam, confused, high on pain meds and well behind on his rent, had agreed. It all moved pretty fast after that, they lived together, slept in the same bed and the day the divorce was finalised, Lawrence had taken him out to dinner.
There had been signs though, things that didn't completely add up in his head. Lawrence was a doctor so obviously he had to stay late sometimes, but occasionally he came home with blood under his nails or a small splatter on his clothes. At first he had looked haunted, somehow like he had seen all the horrors the world had to offer, it had worried Adam, he wondered if Lawrence was struggling with seeing so much human suffering after the bathroom. But one night changed it completely.
Lawrence was late, later than usual. He hadn't picked up any of his calls. Adam had already tried to busy himself with making dinner and doing chores, eventually resigning himself to pacing up and down their living room biting his nails anxiously.
Just as Adam was considering calling the hospital, Lawrence appeared in the doorway, suit caked in blood.
"Lawrence where the hell-" he stopped, and stared at Lawrence who stared back with cold dead eyes. "Larry? Larry? What happened? Are you okay?"
The doctor said nothing, instead calmly hanging up his soaked coat and walking slowly towards Adam.
"Larry, what the hell happened to you?!" Adam said, nervously, taking a step back.
Lawrence didn't reply, grabbing Adam and pulling him into a tight hug, much like the one at the hospital, burying his face into Adams shoulder.
"Lawrence?"
"I-I did a horrible thing today Adam," he takes a shaky breath, "I let someone die."
Adam froze. How the hell was he supposed to handle this? Wasn't Lawrence used to dealing with death, being a doctor and all? Adam was immediately hit with a wave of guilt, just because Lawrence was a doctor didn't mean watching someone die wasn't terrifying.
"I could have helped, I could have stopped it-" he grips Adam tighter, "But I didn't, because I'm selfish Adam, so selfish."
"Hey, hey Lawrence." He breaks away for a moment but Lawrence pulls him back, so he resigns to carefully bringing their foreheads together, "Shh, Lawrence, it's okay."
Adam didn't know what else to do so he focused on getting Lawrence through his nightly routine. He peeled the bloody clothes off throwing them into the bath tub with a wet squelch, helped him into his pyjamas and took off his prosthetic before laying down and tangling both of them in their bedsheets, all through Lawrences muttered apologies. They laid there for a while, Lawrences unsteady breathing filling the otherwise silent room.
"You know the worst thing is that a part of me doesn't regret it." He begins, "Because you're here, safe, alive, mine. And that's the only thing that matters to me in the end." He chuckles bitterly, "I think jigsaw was right, I'm selfish horrible really."
"You're not, that fucker is wrong about everything." Adam says.
"You wouldnt have thought if you saw all that blood." Lawrence says.
"Dont think so, I'm that gone for you." Adam replies, half jokingly.
Lawrence stays silent the rest of the night.
Everything goes back to normal after that. They wake up, Lawrence goes to work and Adam finds a way to spend the day without drowning in his own misery.
Until one day he finally snaps and does a shit ton of snooping, finds out his boyfriend of over a year is working for the guy that tortured them. So of course Adam in his usual idiotic fashion- decided to drive Diana, said boyfriend's nine year old daughter, to a serial killer's funhouse of death.
He gets home late as Adam expected. Thank fuck Diana's in bed, he'd felt so guilty about that impulsive car ride, as soon as he had gotten home he'd put on one of those awful looking barbie movies Diana was obsessed with until she had been lolled once more into a peaceful sleep.
"Hey." Adam says, emotionless.
"Hi." Lawrencesays as he takes off his coat with a suspicious stain on it, normally Adam would brush it off but he knows what it is. Adam wonders if it hurt.
"How was Diana?"
"We watched a movie, now she sleeping in her room."
"Not anything inappropriate I hope."
He stares at Lawrence wordlessly. Lawrence smiles teasingly then frowns as the silence stretches on.
"Adam is everything alright?"
"You've been lying to me!" He accuses straight away, great way to rip the bandaid off Stanheight.
"What are you talking about?" He asks trying to stay calm.
"Don't lie to me again, I know where you've been going all this time, late shift my ass!" He roars.
"Adam I-"
"No! I don't wanna hear it!" His vision clouds with angry tears, "How many Lawrence! How many people have you murdered while working for fucking jigsaw?!"
"Two games, that I've directly participated in, only two Adam." He states desperately.
"Have you been working for him all this time? Has our entire relationship been a lie? Are peoples lives just that worthless to you?!"
"No, no, no." He steps closer and closer to Adam, he flinches and starts to step back.
"I don't understand, why?" Lawrence has him cornered against a wall, his righteous anger from before is quickly morphing into fear as he stares up at the man whose eyes are becoming deader by the second, focusing solely on Adam.
"You, Adam." He wraps his arms around his torso even as Adam struggles to break free. "It's you."
"What the hell are you talking about?" He asks.
"You are my reason, Adam, for getting up in the morning, eating, hell every breath I take, it's all for you." His gaze bores into Adam, "That's why I can't let them take you away from me, never again."
"I-I can't fucking do this Lawrence, I thought we were okay, you said we were going to be okay." He's full on sobbing now.
"I'm afraid it's never going to be over Adam, that bathroom, jigsaw, he's scarred us and we can never truly be free." Lawrence says mournfully.
"Lawrence-"
"I love you."
Those are the last words he hears before he falls asleep.
