Chapter 1: The Flier

Chapter Text

The sun can be seen rising up from the distance, its natural rays of light chasing away the darkness of night as it ascends into the sky. Birds can be seen flying in the sky, their chirping being the only sound that can be heard on this early morning. That was until an alarm blared out on a phone. A groan rings out, the person burying their head further into their pillows to try and ignore the loud beeping. It doesn’t, and with a resigned sigh, the figure gingerly lifts their head up from under their blankets, gold eyes looking at the phone on their nightstand.

The figure taps on the phone, ending the alarm and placing it back on the nightstand. They let out a yawn, rubbing the sleep from their eyes as well as pushing back their purple hair from dropping over their face. “I should really….stop going to bed so late.” They say out loud, the voice feminine that carries a sophisticated and mature tone. Standing up from her bed, she goes over to her closet, deciding on what she should wear for the day. ‘Amy did remind me that we were going to the park after school. If I remember correctly, she said that Sonic wanted to discuss something.’ She thought to herself, a feline tail swishing gently behind her as she picked out a simple but comfortable outfit for the day.

A knock on her door caught her attention, before opening up and revealing a snow white cat mobian. Hazel eyes held the warmth of a mother as they gazed at the young lilac cat in front of her. “Blaze, good morning. I hope you had a good night's rest.” The older cat said, giving her daughter a warm smile. Blaze returns the gesture, placing her clothes on the bed and giving her mother her full attention. “I did, mother. Is father awake?”

“Your father is, but he has to head out early. If you want to see him before he leaves, now is probably a good time.” Blaze nods her head, heading out of her room and down the hall to search for him. She spots him sitting on the couch, newspaper in one hand and a mug in the other. He was a dark purple cat mobian, eyes the color of gold, the same as his daughters. His eyes hold the same warmth that her mother has in hers, giving you a sense of peace. “Blaze, my daughter. Come to see me before I leave?” He says with a gentle tone, his voice deep as he places his paper and mug on the table before standing up. He goes over to his only child, enveloping her in his arms. The younger car returns the embrace, smiling softly as her head rests on his chest. “How long will you be gone?” Blaze asks her father, looking up at him with a questioning gaze.

“If everything goes right, only for the next two days.” He tells her before the sound of his phone grabs his attention. “Sorry dear, I have to go. I’ll see you and your mother soon.” He says to her, giving her a kiss on her forehead before exiting the house. She lets out a sigh, already used to her father leaving so early in the morning and returning days later. Blaze knows that it's the nature of his job, and she will always be grateful. However, she just wishes she can see her father more than a few times out of the week, and that was only if she was lucky. Trying not to dwell on those thoughts, the purple cat mobian goes back to her room, grabbing her clothes and heading towards her shower. She needed to get ready or else she might run the risk of missing the bus.

Waiting by the front of the school by herself, Blaze takes out her phone to pass the time. Scrolling through her phone, she wasn't aware of someone speeding towards her. Only when her name was being called did she look up, only for her to collide with a blur of pink. “Good morning Blaze!” The pink figure said, hugging Blaze as tight as she could. Blaze let a smile spread across her face, returning the gesture before pulling back from the pink hedgehog. “Good morning to you too, Amy. I forget how ... .energetic you are in the morning.” Blaze says to her friend, laughing lightly when she sees her friend blush in slight embarrassment. “Anyway, are you still coming with me and the others to the park after school? Sonic has been really excited for some reason.” Amy asks her, walking inside the school with her friend, maneuvering between the students that were already occupying the hallways.

Amy Rose was a bright and bubbly pink hedgehog, one of Blaze’s first and closest friends. She was actually the first person to approach her during her first year at Green Hill High. At first she was wary of her. She was a rather closed off girl, still is to this day. However, Amy had been persistent, always greeting her each morning and making conversation with her. Soon Blaze found herself actually looking forward to talking to her, and the two eventually became friends. She was then introduced to the rest of Amy’s friends, and the rest was history.

“You don’t say? He hasn’t said anything to you?” Blaze asks her, opening up her locker and retrieving her books for first and second period. She sees Amy shake her head no, leaning against the locker with a sigh. “He’s been tight lipped about it. Even Tails and Knuckles don’t know anything.” If the two best friends of the blue hedgehog don’t know what Sonic is excited about, then she doubts anyone else would. “We’ll just have to see during lunch then. I’ll see you later, Amy.” And with that two friends depart for their respective classes.

Sitting down in her first class, Blaze calmly waits for the teacher to arrive. The rest of the students didn’t share the same idea as she did, talking loudly with each other and goofing off. She let out a sigh, digging into her pockets for her headphones to drown out the noise until class started. As music filled her ears, Blaze wondered what Sonic could be so excited about that. He usually wasn’t so tight-lipped about anything, always saying what was on his mind. Her thoughts come to a halt when she sees her teacher enter the classroom, causing her to take out her headphones and pay attention. The rest of the students gradually head to their own seats, the teacher picking up the chalk and writing the day's lesson on the board.

Classes went by faster than she expected, and Blaze found herself walking through the cafeteria and spotting her friends already seated at their usual table. She quickly grabbed her food before making her way to the table, greeting everyone with a smile as she sat down next to Amy. She then noticed the absence of a certain blue hedgehog. Asking where he was, Tails was the one to answer her question. “Sonic is going to be running a little late, said he had to discuss something with the coach.” The fox said to her, his two distinct tails swishing lazily behind him. “Well he better hurry up if he wants to snag himself some chili dogs before they’re all gone.” Knuckles said, taking a bite of his sandwich. A white hedgehog lets out a laugh, saying that that would be next to impossible for that to happen. “Sonic would fight against death himself to get himself some chili dogs.” The hedgehog said, with Blaze agreeing with her childhood friend Silver. No sooner did those words leave his mouth, the cafeteria doors flew open, a blue blur running past everyone before grabbing the last few chili dogs the cafeteria was selling. Sonic soon sat in between his two best friends, looping his arms around their shoulders with a wide smile. “Trust me when I say this, but there is no way I will ever miss the chance to chow down on chili dogs. It's just impossible.” Sonic says with a grin before taking a bite out of one, letting out a dramatic sigh at the taste.

“So Sonic, mind telling us what's got you so excited these last couple of days?” Amy asks him, taking a bite out of her salad as the rest wait for the hedgehog’s answer. Taking one more bite, Sonic quickly digs into his bag, trying to find something. “I’m glad you asked, Amy. The other day, as I was walking back home after practice, I came across this poster.” Taking the poster out of his bag, Sonic lays it out on the table for his friends to see. Tails looks at the poster, intrigued by what he was reading. “An Extreme Gear tournament? This is the first I'm hearing of this! Are you sure this is legit Sonic?” Tails asked,

“Yep! I checked it out, did my own research and everything about it. It’s a local competition being held all around Station Square. This year is its 10th anniversary since it started. Heard it might even branch out all over Green Hill as well. So I was wondering if any of you guys wanted to join.” Sonic asks them, waiting for their responses. Knuckles picks up the flier, looking over it to see if there was anything else that Sonic might have left out. “Hold on, says here there’s a cash prize of $100,000!? Sonic how the hell could you leave something like that out?!” Knuckles says in surprise, his eyes going wide as do the rest of the group sitting at the table. “Oh, I might have skimmed past that. Honestly, I was just excited about the competition!” The blue hedgehog says with a smile, scratching the back of his head in mild embarrassment. Sonic was someone who liked competition, looking for the next challenge.

“It also says that we need a minimum of 5 people to join, but can have more if we want to.” Tails said to them, looking at the flier and seeing that the sign up date ends in two weeks. “So what do you say guys? Want to join this and see how far we can go?” Sonic says to them, eyes sparkling with excitement. Knuckles agreed to join, high fiving Sonic as Amy and Silver also said they were in. “Blaze, Tails? You guys in?” Sonic asked, looking at the two and waiting for their answers. “I would love to, but I can't. I have a lot of after school programs that I have to attend and supervise.” The youngest of the group said, giving them an apologetic smile as Sonic reassured him that it was fine. “Hey, don't feel sorry, I know how much these programs mean to you.” Sonic said to his best friend, patting him on the back with a smile. Tails said that he would find a way to help them, suggesting that he could possibly help maintain their Extreme Gears.

“That's a great idea, Tails!” Amy said with excitement, recalling how Tails was always tinkering and inventing things during his free time. Sonic’s gaze then went to Blaze, asking her if she was in. “I suppose I could join as well. As long as it does not affect any of my studies.” The cat mobian said with a smile, laughing at how Sonic pumped his fist in the air. “Great! We’ll go to sign up on the last day, in case anyone changes their mind or if something comes up.” The blue hedgehog said, before the sound of the bell rang overhead. Standing up from the table, Sonic bid his friends farewell before zooming out of the cafeteria. Amy and Tails stood as well, bidding farewell to them and walking out of the cafeteria. “Better make sure that hedgehog doesn't get himself into trouble.” Knuckles said to Blaze and Silver, walking in the direction of their blue friend. Blaze stood up from the table, brushing some of her hair out of her face as she and Silver made their way to their next class.

As the final bell rang for the day, students quickly rushed out of their classrooms, running to their lockers to put away their books and heading towards the exit. Blaze walked to her locker, stretching her arms over her head and letting out a satisfied sigh, glad that the school day was finally over. Putting her books away, she turns around to make her way to the exit when her eyes land on something peculiar. She sees two figures, one obviously female with her snow white hair pulled in a messy ponytail, her nails painted an icy blue. She could see that she was rather well endowed, her figure exuding sex appeal. Her shirt squeezing her chest, her jeans clinging to her like second skin. She could see the bat wings folded on her back, Blaze wondering how large they were before her gaze shifted to the second figure.

If the purple cat had to guess, she would say that the second figure was most likely a male. From how tall they were, and how they held themselves. She couldn't get a good look at the figure's face, seeing as she only could see them from the back. They had a hood covering their head as they walked down the hallway, stopping in front of the main office. The bat mobian gave a wink to her companion, walking inside before being followed by the figure in the hoodie. ‘New students?’ Blaze thought to herself, a little curious to see who they were. Before her curiosity got the best of her, Blaze heard someone call her name. “There you are, come on! We have to head to the park and meet up with the guys!” Amy said to her, dragging her to the exit. Following her friend, she soon forgot about the two new possible students, focusing on answering any questions Amy had asked.

After making a quick stop at her home to grab her Extreme Gear, Blaze met up with the rest of her group, seeing Sonic already performing tricks on his own board. “Blaze! Glad you could make it.” Sonic said with a smile, spinning in the air before landing on the ground a few feet away from her and picking up his board. “Now that everyone is here, we can now begin. I thought it would be a good idea to start training and practicing. See how fast we can go, brush up on some stuff we’re not good at, stuff like that.” Sonic explained, getting nods of agreement from the group. “So let's start with a quick race!” And just like that, everyone around him let out groans of outrage. “Sonic, why would we do that if we all know that you're the fastest out of everyone here?” Silver said, leaning on his white and cyan board. Sonic let out a chuckle, getting on his board and hovering a few inches off the ground. “Come on! It’ll be fun! Don't you want to see if you can beat me?” The blue hedgehog said with a grin, watching as the rest of them let out sighs of exasperation before getting on their respective boards. “I’ll watch our stuff, don't want anyone trying to steal any of our bags.” Amy said, sitting out of the race as she and Tails made their way to a nearby bench. Sonic pulled out a map, pointing out the route they would be using for the race.

“First one back here is the winner. Everyone ready?” Sonic asks out loud, standing on his board and hovering off the ground. Silver and Knuckles activated their own boards, Silver donning his cyan blue vizor as the red echidna cracks his knuckles. Blaze let out a sigh, feeling a small smile come across her lips as her own purple board began to hover as well. The four of them lined at, waiting for the signal to begin. Tails began to count down from 5, each of the friends getting ready to take off. “1. Go!!” As soon as the words left his mouth, all four racers took off, flying down the street at incredible speeds. Sonic found himself at the front, swerving from side to side to prevent anyone from passing him. Knuckles was on his tail, trying to get past him by brute force. “Come on Knuckles! You have to do better than that!” Sonic says with a laugh, seeing his friend get frustrated by him.

Knuckles speeds up, trying to get past the annoying blue hedgehog as they weave around each other. As the two of them were both busy with the other, they failed to see Blaze jump over them, her shadow casting over them as she lands in front of them and races ahead. “All right! Nice one Blaze!” Sonic says, a smirk on his face as he rushes after her. He looks around for any shortcuts, seeing her going down on a hill and picking up more speed. Silver shoots past him, grinning at him as he follows after Blaze. Sonic quickly jumps up in the air, twisting his body in a spin before landing his board on a grind rail, picking up speed and rushing ahead. “Damn it!!” Knuckles exclaims, seeing the other three so far ahead of him as he tries to catch up.

Blaze quickly looks back, seeing Sonic and Silver catching up to her quickly. There were only a few more turns before they reached the end. Blaze picked up her speed, knowing that it would only take Sonic a few more seconds to catch up to her. She needed to put more distance between him. “You gotta be faster than that, Blaze!” The cat mobian gets startled, looking and seeing the blue hedgehog already beside her. She quickly gains more speed, the two of them going neck and neck. They can see Amy and Tails, both of them watching and waiting to see who would get there first. As the two made their way to the final stretch, they failed to realize that something was shooting towards them at incredible speeds.

“Come on Blaze, let’s finish this!” Sonic says with a wide grin, trying to go faster and faster to win. The two were neck and neck, trying to pass the other. That was when a blur of black zoomed past them, cutting through the middle between them. Sonic and Blaze, startled and surprised, quickly skidded to a half and watched as the black blur zoomed past quickly stops, dismounting his board and grabbing it, slinging it onto his back. “Nice. Think you managed to actually improve a bit, hon.” A voice said, Blaze turning in their direction and seeing the bat mobian she saw earlier today walking towards the hooded figure. If she was here, then it’s possible that this person was also the same person she saw earlier today. “Wow, did you see the speed on that guy? It was insane!” Sonic said to her, his eyes lighting up in excitement as Silver and Knuckles caught up to them.

“What’s going on? Who won?” Silver asks them, leaning on his board as he watches both Sonic and Blaze turn around to face them. “Oh, neither of us did.” Sonic says with a laugh, rubbing his head as he dismounts his board. Knuckles gives him a questioning look, asking him what he meant as Tails and Amy walked over to the group. “Well me and Blaze were neck and neck, trying to pass each other and win, when out of nowhere that guy over there blitzed past us! He was so fast, faster than anything I’ve ever seen!” Sonic explains in excitement, pointing over his shoulder to the hooded figure behind them. Silver looks over to see who he was talking about, dawning a surprised expression on his face before turning back to Sonic. “Him? He actually passed by us on the same route too.” The albino hedgehog said, with Knuckles adding that he shot past them on the downhill with incredible speed.

As the group continued to talk, Blaze turned her head in the direction of the stranger, seeing him reach for his hood and lower it. The first thing she noticed was the red streaks in his black quills. Rare among hedgehog mobians from what she can recall. The quills were longer too, and the bottom ones were turned upwards as well. She could see a tan muzzle on his face, a hint of a scar near his mouth as well. Finally, she noticed his eyes, the same color as the streaks in his quills. Blood red and fierce as they stared at the bat mobian. “I think he goes to our school.” Blaze found herself saying to her friends, telling them she might have seen him by the office earlier today. “Really? That’s awesome! I wonder if he’s as fast on his feet as he is on his board.” Sonic said with a grin, picking up his bag and walking in the opposite direction.

“Well guys, it’s been fun but me and Tails have to get going. See ya tomorrow!” Sonic says to them, walking with Tails as the rest of the group disperses. Blaze waved goodbye to Amy, picking up her board and walking in the direction of her home. Curiously, she casts one last glance to the black hedgehog, watching him for a few more moments before continuing on her way. Sonic was right about one thing.

That hedgehog was indeed fast.

Notes:

I’ve always liked to concept of Extreme Gear back when it was introduce in Sonic Riders. So I wanted to try my hand at writing a story that centered around it. Shadaze has always been a guilty pleasure of mine and seeing as it doesn’t have that many docs about them, I decided I should write one and see if I can inspire others to write about this pairing as well. Let’s see how this story goes and have fun reading.
