Work Text:
the ache, was only starting to settle, it was dull strike to his chest, incomparable to anything he has experienced before. not even his years in vsf could've prepared him for this. you see, sonny was trained in so many things, combat related. they taught him how to fight, how to manage troops, how to survive in a rain forest, all in great detail. he wasn't trained for emotions like these, but it has to dawn over him all at once? hell.
they've spent a good chunk of their life together, even if they barely hung out exclusively, sonny was used to having her around. she'd occasionally make sarcastic comments that make him question his own character. but at the end of the day, he finds her amusing.
he could barely count with his own fingers, the amount of times pomu has helped him, may it be big or small, the fairy had her own little ways. there are a lot of things he couldn't have done without her.
when pomu announced her departure, he barely had anything to say about it. his silence made her a bit concerned at that time, even going out of her way to ask him if he was doing okay. it was her day, why should she be thinking of what he felt? why would've it mattered so much?
"i'm just checking on you, you know?" her sweet voice echoed in his ears throughout the white noise he has been hearing throughout the entire evening.
"i'll be fine, pomu." is what he said, even smiling reassuringly at her.
that was the first lie he's ever told a friend.
at the moment, sonny felt bad about it, but he didn't want to keep her all to himself when everyone was waiting to say their goodbyes too. now, he felt terrible about it. should he have asked her to stay? would that have changed anything? what more could've he done for her, so she wouldn't ever have had to think about leaving?
sonny has never felt so... inadequate. he could've been a better friend to her, gave her more gifts, gave her more of his timeー sonny couldn't stop thinking about how he could've done so much more for her, enough to repay the kindness she showed him, even just a bitー just so he would stop beating himself over it.
but he knew better than anyone else that pomu's kindness was out of her own volition, and not because she wanted anything in return, she'd probably hate him for thinking this way.
after what seemed a sea of tears to him, sonny lets out a small laugh, at himself, for being foolish enough to think that pomu would hate him after everything they've been through.
maybe they really were more than acquiantances, much more than sonny was willing to admit.

"oh? who is this?" they held onto the picture frame on his desk, one which displays a blonde lady smiling brightly at the camera. they take a good look at it before turning to sonny,
sonny then takes the frame from their hands, staring the picture for a moment in the same manner they did before opening his mouth to speak,
"... a friend."
