Chapter Text
The sound of the front door unlocking disrupts the quiet atmosphere in the apartment. It opens to reveal Luz Noceda coming into her home with a bag full of groceries on one arm. She closes the door and locks it. She presses the back of her head to the door, sighing and closing her eyes.
What a stressful day.
Not only were some of her elementary students giving her trouble today, but she also had to get groceries for the house as it slipped through her mind yesterday because she stayed up all night grading papers and assignments. Plus, she was still recovering from being sick with the flu.
Actually, it was more like a hectic week as the flu started on Monday, but today was the breaking point.
All she wanted to do was to go home and lie down for the rest of the day.
But nope!
She almost forgot to get groceries.
Again.
Letting out with another tired sigh, Luz opens her eyes from relaxing. “Amity, you there?” She calls out as she removes her shoes and sets them aside.
There was no response.
Guess she’s still at work?
Instead, a white feline approaches Luz as she blinks her blue eyes from her nap. The cat meows at her as she stretches.
“Hey there, Ghost. Had a good nap?” Luz says as she bends down to pet the feline. Ghost starts purring with affection, happy to see someone after being alone all day.
As she was petting her, Luz couldn't help but think about... Amity.
She and Amity met one day when she was hanging out with Willow and Gus. Willow brought Amity along because she wanted her to meet some of her friends and get her distracted. Willow didn’t really go into detail due to Amity’s privacy, but she did briefly mention that she was under a lot of pressure from her parents because she was working for them and the awful relationships they picked for her. Nevertheless, Luz and Amity start it off strong as they realize they both love the greatest book of all time (at least in her opinion): The Good Witch Azura. Throughout that whole day, they talked about ships, theories, their favorite characters, etc. As she hung out with Amity more, Luz could confidently say that she was slowly becoming her best friend as they converse about whatever came to mind instead of the Good Witch Azura.
Scratch that. She IS her best friend.
However, one stormy night, Luz found Amity at her front door with nothing but a duffle bag and her pet cat, Ghost. Luz was heartbroken at the sight of Amity as it was evident that she had been crying. Red, puffy eyes mixed in with the drops of the rain. What concerned her the most was the bruises on her wrist, which she briefly saw as Amity’s sleeve was down for a little bit. Amity said that she got kicked out and had nowhere to go, and the first person that came to mind was her.
Luz took her in in a heartbeat. In fact, she told her that she can stay as long as she needs.
It’s been four months now, and she still hasn’t talked about that night. Well, she did, but it was very brief. Amity said that she had a huge fight with her mother, and after a while, her mother told her to get out of the house. Luz couldn’t help but sense something else happened there, but she wouldn’t bring it up as she didn’t want to make Amity uncomfortable.
All she cares about is making sure that she feels safe and comfortable in her home.
Luckily, there was some good news. After hearing about what had happened, Willow was kind enough to offer her a position in her flower shop so that she could get some money and figure out her studies. Even though Amity initially declined, she eventually took the job because Luz and Willow convinced her to. And now, Luz and Amity’s bond has become stronger throughout their time here. She can tell that Amity is much happier here than before.
Which is good, but at the same time, kind of sad and concerning…
Loud meowing is what interrupts her thoughts.
Luz looks down and sees Ghost pawing her legs.
“Are you hungry, girl?”
“Meow-meow!”
Luz giggles, “I’ll take that as a yes.” She stands back up and enters the living room with the kitchen across from it.
She puts the grocery bags on the kitchen island table and goes to the pantry to get Ghost’s food. Luz opens the bag of cat food and grabs the cup that was in there. She pours a good amount into her bowl.
“There you go!” Luz exclaims as Ghost meows at her and starts eating her food. After refilling some more water in Ghost’s bowl, Luz begins to put the groceries away.
When she was about halfway through the groceries, her phone dinged. Luz takes her phone out of her pocket to see who texted her.
It’s Vee.
A warm smile crosses Luz’s face, wondering what her little sister wants to talk about.
Mi Hermana: Hey Luz!! Guess what?!
Luz, now intrigued, smirks.
Me: what! what happened?!?!
did you finally ask Masha outttt????
Mi Hermana: Luz! Stoooppppp!!!!
Me: what?? well, did you??
Mi Hermana: Well, not yet
Me: come on, vee. you gonna tell them or else someone will.
im just saying.
Mi Hermana: ANYWAY, remember how I applied for a job in Mom’s veterinarian place?
Me: oh! yes.
Wait! don’t tell me.
Mi Hermana: I got the job!!!!
Luz gasps loudly at this excellent news.
Me: SHUT UP!!! did youuu????
Mi Hermana: Yes!! I did!!! 😊
Luz drops her phone and lets out a high-pitched scream. It was so loud that Ghost got scared and bolted out of the room.
When she’s done screaming, Luz picks up her phone and types out:
Me: AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
omg, congratulations hermana!!!!!! im so happyy for youuu!!!
Mi Hermana: Thanks, Luz!!! Mama was thinking of making albondigas tomorrow as a celebration.
I was just wondering if you’ll be there.
It’s okay if you can’t make it. I know you’re busy at times.
Even though Luz was planning on having a lazy day tomorrow since she finished grading, she’d feel bad if she didn’t make it.
All because she isn’t feeling up to it.
Me: of course, i’ll be there, vee!! just tell me the time!
After sending that message to her sister, Luz hears the front door unlocking. She gasps and smiles brightly.
Amity!
Luz jogs toward the door and sees the lavender-haired woman coming in.
“Hi, Amity!” Luz greets with a cheery voice.
Even when she’s having a rough day, just the simple sight of Amity brings her spirits up.
“Oh! H-Hi Luz,” Amity stutters, not expecting Luz to be in front of her.
She has a blush dusting on her cheeks as she can see her pretty, gorgeous brown eyes.
Her short, messy, but beautiful hair.
Her perfect kissable lip—
No! Bad Amity!
“Ahh… sorry I was late,” Amity says as she removes her shoes. “There were a lot of people today,” her voice grows exasperated at the end, and her eyes go wide at how many people were in the flower shop today and how stressful that was.
Luz giggles, speeding Amity's heart 100 miles per hour.
“It’s okay, Amity. I can’t imagine it, though. If it makes you feel any better, I had a bit of a rough day, too. So y-yeah,” Luz chuckles, rubbing the back of her head sheepishly.
“O-Oh, that makes two of us, right?” Amity awkwardly chuckles as she looks up to see Luz.
However, they briefly look at each other in the eyes and quickly lose eye content, both of them are a blushing mess.
“Um, Um… I was just about to order some takeout ‘cause, you know. Tiring day and all that, haha. Want your usual?” Luz quickly asks, trying to hide her blush.
“Oh, yes, please, and thank you,” Amity replies as she puts her purse on a nearby table in the hallway.
“No problem!” Luz exclaims as she and Amity walk into the kitchen. Luz grabs her phone and puts in the order.
“Hey, Ghost. Miss me?” Amity greets her cat as Ghost lets out a loud meow.
She chuckles as she knows that is a ‘yes.’
Amity looks up and sees the leftover groceries on the table.
“D-Do you need help with the groceries?” Amity asks as she awkwardly stands in the kitchen.
“Hmm?” Luz looks up at Amity, confused for a second. “Oh! Yes, please!”
Amity makes her way to the grocery bags and puts them away.
“Okay! The order is placed! It’s going to take around 15 minutes. Is that okay with you?”
“Yeah, that’s fine,” Amity nods as she opens the pantry to put away the spaghetti sauce.
“Hmm, Amity!” Luz snaps her fingers, remembering her conversation with Vee. She opens up her messages and sees that Vee texted back.
Mi Hermana: Can you make it at around 4?
Me: of course!
“Yes, Luz?” Amity says as Luz sends that message.
“Okay, so, did I ever tell you about how my sister was applying for that job at my mom’s vet care?”
“Oh, yeah, I remember. Did she get it?” Amity asks with a hopeful tone.
“Yes! She got the job! Ahhh!” Luz replies as she jumps up and down excitedly, with the biggest and brightest smile.
Amity blushes because of her smile. “Oh wow! That’s awesome! Tell her I said congrats.”
“I will!” Luz nods excitedly, still smiling at the news, “So yeah, I’m gonna go to my mom’s house tomorrow as we are going to celebrate.”
As soon as she says that, Luz’s eyes grow wide as she realizes something. “Wait, we didn’t have anything planned tomorrow, right?”
“Oh, no no no no. We shouldn’t have anything planned for tomorrow. Or at least, I didn’t have anything planned.”
“Oh, that’s a relief,” Luz sighs, wiping her brows.
Amity finishes putting away the groceries and stands near Luz, waiting for their food.
“Sooooo,” Amity begins after a brief, awkward silence, “U-Umm, how was your day? W-Well, I know that it wasn’t great a-and all b-but... Y-You k-know what? N-Never mind—”
“No, Amity, it’s okay. Let me think,” Luz scratches her chin as she looks back on her day.
I mean, some things that happened today were good, like going home and seeing Amity and her luscious, cotton-candy hai–
NOPE.
STOP IT!
But overall, it was just a rough day.
So Luz decides to take another approach.
“You know what? I am just gonna rant because this whole day has been nothing but a clusterhug. Okay, so Carmen was supposed…”
And from here on out, Luz rants about her day, picking apart what happened while Amity listens intently.
Even when she rants, she’s still so cute!
Ahhhhhh, how is that possible?!?!
They still resume their conversation when their takeout finally gets there. But now, it is Amity’s turn to rant about her day.
Luz doesn’t know why, but whenever she talks with Amity, she feels warmth in her presence alone. Of course, she enjoys her talks with her. But something inside her gives her the butterflies whenever she is near Amity or listens to whatever she passionately talks about. In fact, when Amity is done ranting about her day, they talk about whatever comes to mind. There are no awkward pauses as they both easily speak to each other.
The time flew by so quickly that by the time they were done eating, Luz looked at the time and realized they’d been talking for two hours.
That’s what happens when you're talking to your crus–
“OKAY!” Luz yells out as she stands up abruptly, stopping her brain from going any further. Amity is looking at her with wide eyes.
“I think it’s time we go to sleep. I mean, you don’t have to go to sleep. I’m just a little tired after today.”
Amity’s face droops down a little bit as they have to cut the conversation short. But if she is being honest, she is pretty tired from today. She has been up and down all day, so sleep does sound relaxing.
“N-no, you’re right. I’m pretty tired, too, and it is getting pretty late, so umm.”
“Well, goodnight, Amity!” Luz exclaims as she begins to walk out of the kitchen.
“Goodnight,” she hears Amity reply back. When Luz is out of the living room, she speedwalks to her room, wanting to avoid the awkwardness. She opens her door, closes it, and runs straight to her bed. She puts her face to the pillow and screams.
God. We are so awkward.
Okay, so it’s no big secret that she has a crush on her roommate/friend.
But what is there not to like?
Amity is smart, cool, and classy. Not only that, but she is also very kind and will help anyone in need.
Plus, she is gorgeous.
Down to her beautiful lavender hair to her cute face that she just wants to kiss all da—
Okay, brain. I think that’s enough for today.
Once Luz finishes her nighttime routine, she returns to her bed and slips under the covers, catching some well-deserved sleep.
Little does she know that her life is about to change.
