Chapter Text
11,047km. That's 6864 miles.
The Guinness Books says the best someone could do was 155.64 miles in almost 27 hours.
That's not fast enough .
No, not for Kate. Not when Lucy's pillow has started to lose the scent of her hair — not when it made her start using Lucy's shampoo and conditioner to feel her closer. Not when she keeps walking into the bullpen with the faint hope to find Lucy in her desk — even when she has her phone in her ear, when she's on the other side, eighteen hours away from Kate.
18 hours. That's 1080 minutes.
1080 minutes equals 68800 seconds, and 86,400 heartbeats.
That's too much. Too much.
“I can hear you yawning, Kate.” Lucy's voice barely above a whisper. If Kate closes her eyes for long enough, she can pretend she's in bed with her — that the smell of almonds surrounding her is actually her girlfriend's, and not the body moisturizer she left in the bathroom. “You should be resting, babe. Don't mess up your sleep schedule just because I'm not there.”
Kate smiles, her small chuckle muffled by the cushion she's holding onto for dear life. “I'm not that tired. And you should've thought twice before leaving me here, Lucy-less. ”
“What about me? You shipped me off, Kate-less .”
A beat. Two.
“I miss you.” One of them say. It sounds a little watery, a little salty.
“I miss you, too.”
Kate tries to not think too much about how she has more room in her bed now. She hates more room. She hates not having Lucy, the blanket hogger, beside her. She hates that she won't wake up with Lucy's hands sliding under her shirt, caressing her waist. She hates that Lucy is not here to kiss her goodnight.
“I don’t want to wait eight more weeks.” I want you now.
“I don’t want either. But I’ll be back soon. You won’t have to wait a second longer after that. I’ll be all yours.”
“I won’t allow you to leave my side after you come back.”
“I know.”
“I might sew our hands together. I won’t let you go again, Luce.”
“Yeah, I know that too.”
Lucy hates it too. She hates that she's being deprived of their apartment, their small love-bubble, their own homey-atmosphere. She hates that she won't get to buy coffee with Kate before they go to work — she hates that her lunch breaks are spent away from Kate.
“Do you want me to stay on the phone with you until you fall asleep?” She offers.
“I don't want to disturb your work.” The blonde mumbles, burying herself even further on the mattress.
“I have time. Don't worry.” The smile is clear in her tone. “I'll stay with you. Do you want me to talk, too?”
Kate hums in affirmation, and Lucy starts talking. She talks about the hyper-lucrative bingo the sailors have going on; about how every dish with potatoes doesn't seem to involve actual potatoes in the recipe; about the case of a missing hat and the guy who was stocking chocolate on his drawer - how it turned into a sticky mess after a week.
She goes on and on about small things — silly things — that popped in her mind and had been labeled as, "Kate must know about this". She's mid-talk about how easily game nights can escalate to full-blown fights when she hears the other snoring.
God, she's adorable.
“Kate?” She waits for a second. No answer. A goofy grin twisting her lips. She wishes she could see her face right now. (Kiss her forehead and tangle their legs to keep them as close as humanly possible.) She always looks so peaceful when she’s asleep. “Goodnight, my love.”
