Chapter Text
All it took was the raising of one manicured eyebrow and she had me ready to kneel. I did not, because that would have been inappropriate and incredibly unprofessional. Instead, my entire brain emptied waiting for her command and I looked like a stuttering idiot.
She was wearing a dark navy suit and vest with a black dress shirt underneath. Top buttons undone. Her long raven wavy hair tied back professionally in a tight high pony tail. Blood red lips and set of stabs me black heels with the red underside that stole every sapphics breathe thank you very much.
She walked with the confidence of someone who knew exactly who she was and what she wanted and I was ready to die for her with .03 seconds of meeting her. I had laughed at Winn when he said ‘WAPOW!’ Last week but golly. He was right. And she had now crossed her arms at me because my brain was broken.
Say something!
“Wow, you look incredible. I think you broke my brain. You can you repeat that?”
NO! That is not what appropriate at all. Proven by the fact that both her brows were now point up. Something else! Fix this you idiot before Athena walks away from you and issues a restraining warrant!
“I’m sorry. That was so inappropriate!”
Better. Okay. We can do this.
“It was.” She replied and I almost wilted to the carpet at her Irish lilt. “You are here for an interview. Are you capable of running it or should I call for security Miss…?
“Danvers!” I exclaimed stupidly and her expression remained unchanged.
“My name is Kara Danvers and I’m Supergirl. Cat Co sent me to interview you but I am hoping to prove my sister wrong. She thinks you could be a villain and I’m hoping for an ally.” I heard myself say and then covered my mouth in horror at my complete laps.
“I am sorry. You expect me to believe that you are the formidable Supergirl? I was under the impression she was more enigmatic.” She replied.
“I’m having an off day.” I replied. “I’m so sorry. I haven’t been this useless before. I think the alien downtown earlier hit my head a little to hard. Oh my God why can’t I stop talking.”
She was now frowning.
“You’re Supergirl?” She asked.
“Not today apparently.” I wined covering my face. “Can you turn around?”
“Why?” She asked.
“You are…too pretty and… and very wow. Mybrainisn’tcopingokay!” I tumbled out undoing the top buttons of my shirt trying to breathe. Her eyes widened and I realised I had just revealed the top of my super suit. “Shit!”
I turned around looking at the closed door of her office and tried to breathe.
There was silence until finally she spoke.
“Of all the possible scenarios I had planned for, I didn’t expect in any that you would expose your secret identity due to a gay panic.”
She sounded amused but I didn’t dare look. Apparently, it didn’t save me from a completely broken filter.
“I’m not gay! This has never happened before. I’m concussed or poisoned!” I cried.
“You think I’ve poisoned you?” She asked coldly.
“No! I think whatever was in that purple goo I got thrown into is….” I trailed off at the stupidity of my statement and tried again.
“I think I’m having a gay awakening and it’s happening at the worst time!” I whined.
She didn’t respond and I muttered under my breathe. “How did I not know this about myself? How do you miss being into women? I’m supposed to be an alien genius for Rao’s sake!”
“It happens differently for everyone.” She replied gently. “Maybe sit down. Maybe I can help.”
“Help?” I asked crazed. “I just realised I wasn’t straight very unprofessionally in your office and you want to help? You should just call my sister and have her lock me up till next century.”
“I don’t believe in the closeting of my community.” She replied. “You have not done anything warranting a restraining order yet. Having someone realise they are gay in front of me is preferable to them trying to kill me. The fact that you are also an alien godlike being adds a nice boost to my ego really. Its as if I had the power with one look to turn Supergirl gay. Rather incredible really if it were true.”
I laughed, finally turning to sit against her wall, not daring to come closer to were she stood by her desk.
“This must have been how Alex felt when Maggie walked into the room. Rao! At least she kept it in till later!” I whined again.
“Everyone’s experience is unique to them.” She spoke soothingly.
I sighed putting my head between my legs too scared I’d whack it through her wall.
“Mines embarrassing.” I replied.
“So was mine.” She replied. “My first girlfriend outed me to my entire year in the locker room before calling me disgusting.”
“Someone called you disgusting? I exclaimed incredulous as my head shot up. “I am sorry, she clearly needed to get her eyes checked because you are how I imagine Athena looking in the Greek Myths. I am sorry you had such a horrible experience. Beautiful doesn’t even begin to describe you.”
“Athena had the brains; Aphrodite was the Goddess of Beauty.” She replied.
“Athena was the incredibly talented war goddess of strategy and crafts. She was an inventor and fierce! And I absolutely believe she looked exactly like you. Stunning. Aphrodite wasn’t the only beautiful goddess.” I retorted.
“Very well. I will accept the compliment.”
“Thank you.” I took a deep breathe. “I’m supposed to be interviewing you.”
I looked at my phone. “I’ve wasted 10 minutes.”
“I wouldn’t say you waisted it.” She replied. “You stated earlier you hoped to make an ally. I am the L in LGB darling. I think you are doing just fine. As for the remaining 10 minutes…” She trailed off stepping closer carefully, “If you are feeling well enough then I am sure we can get you a few quotes you can use. How about for today, I open a little about my own journey as queer woman in business? Would Cat Co be a good choice to ally myself with, Miss Danvers?”
“Yes. Absolutely!” I replied scrambling to set up my phone.
She came closer, popping off her shoes and sitting beside me and I held my breathe.
“There, this way your phone picks up both our voices clearly and you don’t have to look directly at me.” She offered taking my phone from my shaking hand.
I have no idea how I got through the next ten minutes other then Lena being completely saint like and caring. She helped me come up with what I might need for the article and then taking down my email address at Cat Co, promised to send me an audio file with notes later today so there wasn’t a chance I’d lose my job.
And then I was walking out of her office in a daze. I don’t entirely remember how I got back to Cat Co. I just remember the jarring feeling that was the realisation James Olson whom I was supposed to be attracted to and eating a lunch date with was no longer making my heart pick up like he had this morning.
Was I a Lesbian then? Or was I Bi? Did I find men attractive at all anymore?
I pulled my phone out to text Alex from where I was hiding in the bathrooms to stall having to deal with James.
Me: 911 emergency sisters’ night please! I gay panicked in front of a woman and no longer find James attractive. Actually, can you test me at the DEO? Maybe the purple slime contaminated me.
Alex: You think the slime made you gay? I’m coming to get you just in case you’re high. If you are gay then we can absolutely have an emergency sister’s night to talk about it. Where are you?
Me: Women’s bathroom hiding from James because we are supposed to be going on a pre date lunch and I do not want to at all anymore.
Alex: Are you safe enough to fly?
Me: I think so.
Alex: Okay, I’ll meet you on the balcony and we can make sure you’re not slime affected. Text James you have a Supergirl emergency.
I sighed, texting James quickly and then I fled to the DEO.
2 hours later –
I was not infected. So, Alex came over for an early sister’s night after I called into work sick for the afternoon and she left work under the Guise of making sure Supergirl wasn’t compromised. J’onn had looked at her and then nodded gruffly and walked away as my face had burned red in embarrassment.
And then I had to explain the entire gay panicked incident to Alex. She didn’t interrupt. Her eyes widened when I confessed ashamedly that I had exposed Supergirl’s identity but she didn’t say anything. She listened to me ramble and panic along. She listened to the recording of Lena helping me figure out Questions and then listened with me to the Audio recording Lena had sent me sometime during our discussion.
When I was finally out of words and lying on my floor, the sun was setting and Alex ordered all my favourite foods.
“You hate me don’t you.” I cried covering my face. “Being gay was meant to be your thing but I’m steeling it too!”
“Whoa whoa whoa!” Alex interrupted wrapping her arms around me. “Being gay isn’t something you can steal Kara. It’s something you either are or you aren’t and I think its cool that you are too. Makes me feel less alone.”
I laughed snottily at her. “But I told someone Supergirl’s identity.”
“You told a Luthor.” She corrected.
“But she’s nice and –
“And took care of you after you had a very gay breakdown at how pretty she was in her office. I know. That’s why I’m not calling J’onn. I still don’t trust her but I distrust her a little less. A really evil person would have called security and then called your boss and had you fired. But she tried really hard to make sure your gay awakening was as safe as it could be after she realised it wasn’t you doing a bit. And now she’s gone further allowing you to write about her own sexuality to further protect you.”
“I know!” I said burying my head further into her shoulder.
“But boy, do you know how to pick em Kara. Lena Luthor of all people. I really hope you are the one who has it right. That she is good. Because after today, I think she could be a very helpful ally for you.” She teased.
“ALEX!” I pulled back mortified. “She was just being nice. I ruined any good impression I could have had. She said she expected Supergirl to be more enigmatic. I was not enigmatic. I was the most blundering gay messed version of me. It’s how I know she’s definitely a good person.”
Alex just looked at me.
“I’m looking forward to delivering the NDAs to her office. Apparently, she’s a queer icon.” She wiggled her brows and I reddened.
“You have Maggie!” I complained.
“You’re lucky. If she’s as pretty as you say, then I may end up over come. Because apparently the government takes horrible pictures of her.”
“They really do.” I replied lying back on the floor before racing superspeed to the door at the knock.
“Pizza!” I yelled in his face making the poor delivery boy wobble dangerously with my food. I immediately took them off his hands as Alex jogged to the door to pay him.
“Sorry about her.” She said as I was already walking away. “She’s got a one tracked mind when it comes to food. Have a good night.”
“Thank you!” I called waving a piece of cheesy goodness as I balanced the boxes in my other hand.
The second I heard the door close, I sped to the counter and immediately exchanged cardboard for actual pizza.
“Hey! Some of that is mine you know!” Alex called.
“Nuh uh!”
