“There's just one thing I want to hold onto.
That hint of a smile that plays on your lips.
We live out our ordinary days and grow up,
It's not easy, but I have no regrets.”
SEVENTEEN – '今 -明日 世界が終わっても-'
The flat was completely silent.
It was early in the morning, and the first rays of sunlight were trying to sneak through the curtains of the dining room. Silence prevailed wisely in the space, and a feeling of intimacy ran through the furniture and decorations. Occasionally the passing of cars was heard from an open window, but the sound was muffled by the closed door of a bedroom.
Inside, two young men lay sleeping comfortably between the sheets.
The curtains of the room were open, causing the light to hit their bodies; gently warming them. Their chests rose and fell in a slow, steady rhythm as they breathed, and their intertwined bodies emanated a cosy feeling.
Both seemed to be fast asleep, but the shorter boy's grunt shattered that illusion.
Akito woke up slowly between small movements and soft grunts. The sunlight proved too much for his eyes, so, closing them, he took a big breath of air; filling his lungs generously.
Thanks to that, he became aware of where he was.
Toya's arms were wrapped subtly around his lower back, and he was able to feel the elder's soft breaths on his neck; causing the hairs on the back of his neck to stand on end. Unconsciously, he snuggled against Toya's neck, ignoring the boy's murmurs as he was awakened by Akito's movements.
“Aki…”
It was just one word, but Toya's husky voice, along with his groans, made Akito's head snap up.
“Good morning.” Akito was aware that he sounded half asleep, and that half of his face was squashed against the pillow, but ignoring all that, he smiled widely; causing his eyes to close in two half moons.
And Toya, upon seeing his boyfriend with flushed cheeks and smiling so adorably towards him, couldn't help but smile as well; directing one of his hands to comb Akito's unruly hair.
“Good morning.” He whispered as he moved towards Akito's mouth to kiss him.
It was a delicate, soft kiss; for their lips seemed to simply brush together in that motion, but it was enough for both of them, who, as they parted a few inches apart, pressed their foreheads together.
They stayed like that for a few minutes: Akito with his eyes closed and a contented smile on his face, and Toya admiring his boyfriend; following the freckles on the younger man's face with his gaze.
“We should get up now, we're going to be late.” Alas, they had places to go, and the moment of peace came to an end with Akito's words.
After Toya nodded, but, they didn't move immediately: trying to prolong the moment a few seconds longer.
After a few extra seconds, they silently rose to begin their routine. Akito stretched as he stood up, causing his pyjama shirt to ride up a little and show a bit of his stomach, but at a slight breeze he shivered and lowered his arms; causing the shirt to cover him again. After that, he walked to the door and headed for the sink to brush his teeth.
Toya took a few more minutes to follow him, as he stayed sitting on the bed all this time; admiring Akito and what he was doing. When he reached the washroom with him, however, he found that Akito had already finished, so he quickly (as quickly as he could afford even when he was half asleep) brushed his face and teeth.
When they finished, they parted; Akito to the kitchen and Toya to the bedroom to change clothes.
It wasn't until minutes later that they met again. Akito was just finishing serving the omelettes onto their respective plates, when Toya's arms wrapped around his waist.
“Toya!” he exclaimed out of startlement. “You really do become very affectionate in the mornings, but warn me before you scare me like that.” He didn't want to admit it, but the little scare had embarrassed him a little, so as he spoke, he tried to divert his boyfriends attention away from his ears; flushed red with embarrassment.
Toya noticed, though, and with a laugh lifted his head from Akito's shoulder to give him a peck on the cheek.
“Okay…” Was all he said in response, but Akito managed to hear the amused smile in the tone of voice.
So with a huff, he turned around with the dishes in his hands.
“I'm going to change, go eat in the meantime, I'll be back in a moment.”
Standing face to face with Toya, he was finally able to see how he was dressed.
His half-asleep countenance and cosy pyjamas were replaced by clothes that fit him perfectly (according to Akito, who had to admit that whatever he wore, Toya would always be attractive in his eyes).
Toya was wearing a black turtleneck, and over the jumper; a white blouse with the first buttons undone. The black dress trousers fit him like a glove, and together with his shoes and the necklace they had bought months ago on their third anniversary, Toya looked handsome.
He didn't realize he was staring at his boyfriend until he caught his eye with a smile.
“Do you like it?” The tone in which he had asked the question didn't seem to be teasing, for he seemed genuinely curious.
And Akito, seeing that, didn't hesitate to nod.
“Sure, you're beautiful.” He said it sincerely, as if it was an absolute truth, and indeed for him it was.
Hearing that, Toya only blushed and tried to hide his joy at those words by ducking his head to continue eating.
Minutes passed, and when Akito returned, Toya was waiting for him with his hip resting on the kitchen counter and his phone in his hand.
He didn't look up when he heard Akito come in, and as he looked at the screen, he spoke.
“It doesn't look like it's going to rain today, so we don't need to alter the plans we had.” With one of his hands he scrolled the screen, and with the other, he held the coffee. “We can go straight to the gardens, and then to a coffee shop nearby.” He felt Akito's presence beside him, and looking up, he saw him leaning with his hip on the counter as well; but facing him. “What do you think?” He took a sip of his coffee before asking, and as he watched the other finish his breakfast, he put the phone aside.
“Sounds like a good plan, we can walk, it's not too far.” He was done with his plate, and as he drank his juice, he headed to the sink to put things away.
Toya mimicked his actions, and setting his mug down next to Akito's plates, he nodded.
“Okay, I'm going to get my wallet.” He said, heading towards the living room.
“I'll wait for you at the entrance.” Akito replied and went to put on his coat.
He was just finishing adjusting his clothes, when Toya came to his side.
“You look very handsome.” Toya said to him as he put on his long black trench coat.
And Akito smiled at him through the mirror. “Thank you.”
He was simply wearing a pair of baby-blue linen trousers, along with a white jumper with a v-neck, but his piercings and accessories made him stand out.
It didn't take long for them to leave, and as they did, they held hands.
The walk turned out to be longer than they had originally thought, but it didn't take forever. It was that time of the year when the flowers were beginning to bloom, and the sun was rising more and more brightly every day. It was already spring, and everywhere they looked seemed to reflect it.
They walked along, admiring the shops, occasionally talking nonsense and laughing, and when they reached the gates of a park, they did not hesitate to enter.
The park was huge, and filled with gardens full of flowers and small animals roaming the paths. It was rare in itself to find such a place near the city, but luckily the place had only been built a few months ago, and they both knew they would end up going there. Winter passed, and now that it was spring, although they had to wait, they both knew it had been the right decision.
Everything was full of colour, and the variety of plants was truly impressive.
As they walked, they heard the sound of the earth echoing with their footsteps, and as they looked at the thickets of plants around them, they saw them swaying in the gentle breeze that blew through the place.
The sun shone above them, and as they walked with their hands joined, they felt peace and tranquillity.
At some point they stopped to take some pictures, and it was at one such moment that Toya, while posing for a picture in front of some plants, felt a butterfly land on his nose.
Akito ran to take the picture, and as he took it and saw the results, he couldn't help but laugh a little.
“It's kind of funny, you have to admit.” Akito said as he laughed.
Toya's face showed surprise, and because of it, his hands were shown in a weird, but funny pose.
“Maybe.” Looking at the picture he was a little embarrassed, but sensing the other's laughter he smiled (even with red ears, he really did look a little silly in the picture).
The hours passed, and between walks, photos and some sweet treats from the stalls scattered around the place, the two of them finished their tour of the gardens.
“Look, there seems to be a place to eat inside the park itself.” Akito pointed out as he looked at the map of the site. “I think we need to look for a building that looks like a greenhouse.” With a raised eyebrow, he tried to look for the site on the map to no avail.
“Here.” Toya was the first to find it, and with a finger, marked the site. “It's not far, come on, it's this way.”
Hearing Toya's words, Akito nodded, and they both walked towards the place.
“Waoh.” Akito exclaimed when they reached the place.
It was literally a giant glass greenhouse.
The place was a stunning spectacle of architectural brilliance. Every inch of its exterior was covered in crystal, and sunlight would reflect off the surface, creating a majestic and ornate feel. All the place windows were covered in colour and ornate stained-glass, adding to its beauty. Inside, the crystal dome and pillars reflected the sunlight, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere.
The palace was truly a sight to behold.
They passed a small path, entered, and seeing few people, decided to sit down.
Akito looked around, too amazed by the place to focus on the food. If from the outside the place was beautiful, from the inside everything seemed to be a hundred times more spectacular.
Everything could be seen perfectly from the windows, and the metal structure was thin, but sturdy, and full of little decorative details.
“Akito, do you know what you're going to order?” Toya was just as amazed, but unlike his boyfriend, he was able to focus on the menu. “I think some pasta sounds good, what do you think?” He felt like he was talking alone, as Akito didn't seem to be listening to him; still with his mouth slightly open and looking around. But Akito nodded, and Toya smiled in amusement at the short answer.
'It really has blown his mind.' He thought as he leaned back, waiting for the waitress to come, looking around.
As the food arrived, Akito was able to snap out of his trance.
“Have a nice meal!” they both said in unison before they began to eat.
They ate in silence, without needing to say a single word, and when they finished, they stood up, paid and calmly left the place.
“The last book I read turned out to be a fiasco.” Toya commented as Akito listened attentively. “The main character ended up dying out of nowhere at the end, and I just wanted him to have a happy ending.” He said sorrowfully.
Reading had always been a hobby of Toya's that Akito never got to share.
During their high school days, more than four years ago now, in those idle moments when they had nothing to do, the two of them would get together to spend time alone; Toya reading anything and everything, and Akito busy with his music. They could spend entire afternoons without talking; simply existing side by side, for words were not necessary.
After high school came college, and with it came their first shared flat. It was small, and they could barely fit much furniture in it, but it was still their space, and they both kept it as cosy as they could. Toya's books were one of the things they were able to keep with them during that time, along with Akito's equipment. The two worlds, though different, were not incompatible, and in the same room they coincided; the stillness and silence of books, and the rhythm and beat of music.
Akito liked to think that they were like that too. Opposites, but not adverse. Anyway, it would be stupid to think they didn't have things in common.
The thing is, it wasn't until years later, when they got their first job, that the two of them were able to find a bigger place with more rooms; with separate places for their respective hobbies.
Akito had his little studio where he composed, but he had to admit that Toya's library was special. He didn't know why, but that serene atmosphere had always been useful to him when doing his work (or maybe it was, since it was Toya's place after all, and together with him, he always felt safe).
“... like, I think I will read some of her other books, but this author has destroyed me enough with this book, I need time to recover.” Toya's words managed to snap him out of his trance.
He hadn't been able to hear half the things the other had said, but he smiled anyway.
“As much as you like to read, I'm sure you won't last more than a week with that mentality.” He told him in a mocking tone as he pulled his keys out of his jacket.
Time had flown by, and the sun was beginning to set.
“It won't be like that this time.” Toya replied with an indignant air.
And Akito laughed at the elder's attitude.
“As you say, my love.” He said with a chuckle as they entered their home and closed the door.
At the sound of his laughter, Toya softened his expression, and, taking advantage of the fact that the two still had their hands intertwined, tugged Akito's hand; pulling him close to his chest and wrapping his arms around Akito's waist.
“Shall we bet?” He muttered in amusement as he looked into Akito's eyes.
As Toya spoke, Akito was able to feel the other's breath against his face, as they were only inches apart, and their noses brushed against each other.
As close as they were, Akito could see the amused gleam in Toya's eyes glint against the last of the sun's rays.
“What exactly?” He asked, equally amused, but curious.
“Mmm…” Toya pretended to think, rocking the two back and forth, still with both hands on Akito's waist. “How about a week off from cooking?”
Akito, hearing that, stopped in his tracks.
“Dear, I think we'd better not gamble with that, the last time you came into the kitchen you ended up burning the soup.” With his hands, he cupped Toya's cheeks, and squeezed them together. “Better kiss me, and forget about silly bets you'll lose.” He said in a teasing tone before closing the little space that separated them and kissing him still with his hands on his cheeks.
At the unexpected kiss, Toya's eyes widened in surprise; raising his eyebrows, but instantly, relaxing to follow the kiss.
It went on for quite a while, and when they had finished with one, they didn't hesitate to entwine it with another again, but feeling their breath catch, they broke apart.
Their chests rose and fell from both of their heaving breaths, and between gasps, Akito formed a smile with his lips (red and shiny from the kiss).
“That's much better, don't you think?”
And Toya, seeing Akito's amused smile, smiled as well, simply nodding to kiss him again.
In that instant, needless to say, they both felt like the world might end, and they would be okay with that, because whatever happened, they would be together.
“Even If the last night of the world were to come
I just want to cherish what we have, our now.”
