Work Text:

There aren’t a lot of females that can make it in the Turks. It’s kind of an “old boys’ club,” and even when women have what it takes to do the job, they’re often run out by the chauvinistic, territorial,  frat boy attitudes put out by all these homeboys out here.

Tseng, our leader, isn’t like that. He knows the Turks have a culture problem, but it runs deep, and I can tell he’s doing the best he can. I’ve always found him inviting and encouraging, even inspiring. He’s not overly masculine like the others, though he still exudes strength and confidence befitting his position. I admire that man - and it was through his wisdom that he connected me with a mentor.

“Ten-hut!” Cissnei was a small woman, but she could command with a strong voice when she had to. “Recruit Elena, at what time were you to report for training this morning?!”

I was standing at attention, wearing a heavy pantsuit despite the humid forest terrain. “Six AM, ma’am!” I said.

“And what time is it?!”

“Si- six-oh-two?”

“You’re damn right, recruit!”

My head was bowed. I looked up slightly, my blonde hair falling out of my face. Gosh, Cissnei was so cute, how could she look so pretty but act so tough? Her mousy brown hair was perfect with natural waves. Her face was so porcelain and pretty with petite features, her eyes so feminine, her lips so perfectly formed. Her pantsuit fit her so well, showing off her thin, limber physique. You’d never guess she was such a skilled combatant. She caught me staring and gave me a stern look, and I quickly looked back down.

We were training in the forest outside of the village of Gongaga. Because of the Mako reactor there, there were all kinds of creepy crawly creatures lurking in the shadows, mutated and made vicious by the concentrated Mako in the area. Cissnei, a young but seasoned member of the Turks, an espionage and battle unit of the Shinra company, was running me through stealth and weapons drills before we embarked on a campaign to slay some monsters.

Cissnei lowered her volume but retained the tone of command. “Elena,” she said, “what is your weapon of choice?”

“I prefer to fight with my legs and fists, ma’am. And my materia.”

“Very well,” said Cissnei. “But weapons can be invaluable tools, and don’t underestimate the advantages of tools. Attack me, recruit Elena!”

“Ma’am?”

“You heard me!”

“Ok!” I rushed at her head on, kicking up mud with my heels. Just as I threw my first punch, she drew a large shuriken from behind her back, blocking her body and causing my fist to meet steel.

“Ouch!” I exclaimed, leaping back. Before I knew it, she flung the shuriken in my direction, and I dived away from it just in time - though it whizzed past my shoulders, cutting an inch of hair off the left side of my face.

“Ha!” she exclaimed. “See? You were supposed to dodge that, you know.”

“Wha- I didn’t know you’d counterattack,” I complained.

“I didn’t tell you I wouldn’t,” she said. She helped me off the ground. “Come on - I’ll teach you how to throw one with both strength and precision.”

We spent the morning chucking shurikens at trees. We practiced from all angles - standing, jumping, diving, and from up in a tree. I was getting fatigued, but Cissnei seemed unaffected.

“Quick break,” she said at lunchtime. “Then we’re going on a mission!”

The lunch break was nice. Cissnei brought us sandwiches, rice balls, and sushi rolls. She even lightened up a bit, and I got to see her human side. She talked about being the only female in her recruitment class and the harassment she had to endure from her competitors. She said it drove her to be stronger, in part to better protect herself, but also to prove that she belonged. Turk Academy can be ruthless, they only take 10 recruits per class and usually at least half don’t make it as a Turk. Cissnei, however, was top of her class. Even so, she talked about how lonely it was at the top, how the men couldn’t decide if they admired her, despised her, or simply wanted to sleep with her. She graduated the academy with several honors but zero friends.

“But this job isn’t about friendships,” she concluded. “It’s about results. And since becoming a Turk, no one messes with me, and those I interact with treat me with respect.”

“I look forward to that day, ma’am,” I said, “when I earn my respect like you.” I feel like I may have blushed a little. She looked over, peering at me with her chestnut eyes.

“You have respect, recruit,” she said, “as is due to all living things. What you earn will be your honor - but you’ll find it soon enough.”

Her confidence in me shook me, and I was instantly fearful of letting her down. But mustering my strength, I waved it away, instead letting her confidence empower me. She really had a way of stirring my feelings!

After lunch, Cissnei said we’d be doing some survival training in the forest. We’d be gone a few days before returning to base camp, so we brought some survival gear - food, tents, tools, all the essentials. We’d been hiking for over three hours when we came upon a nest of Kimara bugs. Each grasshopper-like insect was twice the size of a Chocobo and far more ferocious. Ever since the family of pests were first spotted near the waste repositories of the Mako reactor, these beasts have been terrorizing farmers and children all throughout the area. The plan, Cissnei explained, was to exterminate the insects and torch the nest.

We counted four full-grown Kimaras in the area. “Do you have some fire materia equipped?” asked Cissnei.

“Fire materia?” I asked. “Sure, but Kimara don’t have a fire weakness.”

“True,” she replied, “but it’ll be easiest to destroy any eggs with a controlled flame. And what status condition should you watch out for?”

“Um,” I stammered. “Oh, they can cast Stop webs!”

“That’s right!” Cissnei said. “Sounds like you studied! Let’s move in, we’ll go for a preemptive strike on the one on the far left. We’ll focus it down, then move together on the next one over until they’re defeated. How’s that?”

“Sounds like a plan!” I said.

We crept through the brush towards the small valley that contained the nest. We approached on the left, and when we were just a few yards from the nearest insect, I heard Cissnei hiss “Go!” in my ear.

I rushed in, leaping for a leg smash right in the insect’s unsuspecting head. Just as I leaped, I heard a quick buzz in my left ear as Cissnei’s shuriken flew by. It lodged itself right in the insect’s neck, just seconds before I stomped down and smashed its head into gooey pieces. "Yuck!" I exclaimed.

“Keep moving!” Cissnei yelled as the other insects whirled about to defend themselves. She pried her shuriken out of our first victim’s neck and took aim at the next one. It rushed at us, wings aflutter, but I countered with a vicious uppercut.

“Nice one!” Cissnei yelled, dashing in. The insect fell on its back, and Cissnei sliced its abdomen cleanly open with her shuriken blade.

“Oh, God,” I groaned, as a terrible odor lifted out of its carcass. I must’ve been distracted, as the third insect struck me with a headbutt, knocking me back. I leaped out of the way of another blow, but the fourth bug had come up behind me, slicing open my pack with its razor sharp wing and grazing the back of my right arm, opening a shallow but painful gash.

“Ouch!” I exclaimed, whirling around with a roundhouse kick to the mandible region. It swiftly countered with a stop web, but I dived out of the way. I responded with another kick, and this time I got it in the eyeball, causing it to stagger.

“Keep pressuring it!” called Cissnei, fighting off the third bug with her shuriken at close range.

I took her advice, continuing to pummel the bug with my legs and fist, preventing it from mounting a counterattack. Finally, I drew on my ice materia, freezing the insect in place and then shattering it with a knee drop for the final blow.

Cissnei had just vanquished her opponent as well, and she rushed over to check on me. “Not bad!” she said, though we were both out of breath.

“Yeah,” I said, “but I think my pack is ruined.” I pointed to the spilled contents of my pack, which were now covered with acidic stop web venom.

Cissnei frowned at the spilled contents, and my heart sank, fearing I had disappointed her. I was expecting a scathing reprimand, but instead she said,“No worries. We’ll make do with what we have. There’s another nest we charted to the northeast, but we won’t make it tonight. Let’s set up camp nearby so I can dress your wound.”

“Huh?” I asked. I’d completely forgotten that the gash on my arm, but now that she mentioned it, it started to sting. Next thing we knew, it started to rain. Great!

I helped Cissnei set up our tent as best I could, ashamed at how slowed I was by my injury. Once we’d taken cover from the moderate but steady rain, we clambered into the tent.

“It’s a tight fit with two of us in here, but it’ll have to do!” Cissnei said. We had just enough space to sit side by side, damp but thankfully sheltered from the storm. Cissnei took out her first aid kit and instructed me to remove my cold, wet suit. I complied, stripping down to my tank top and underwear to get dry. Cissnei removed her outer clothes as well to preserve dryness and warmth, and she was likewise in her underwear and undershirt. I tried (unsuccessfully) to avert my eyes for modesty. She then rubbed a healing potion on my wound. “I bet that stings,” she said, “but this antidote should counteract the venom.”

“I feel okay,” I said, but I couldn’t stifle a whimper as she wrapped my wound with gauze.

“Sorry,” Cissnei said. “I’ll - try to be a bit more gentle.” She continued more slowly this time, wrapping me gingerly with a light touch. It felt really nice to be touched by someone else - I’d been away from family for so long and surrounded by gross men at the Turk training academy, I couldn’t remember the last time I'd allowed someone to touch me willingly. Even receiving wound care was a gratifying experience.

“You’re doing great,” I encouraged her. “It feels really nice when you’re touching me - I mean, when you’re helping me!” Oh my gosh, did I really say that? I’m sure I blushed, and to my surprise, Cissnei was blushing too! We made fleeting eye contact and then quickly looked away. “So, um, we got any food?” I asked.

“I brought stuff to cook,” she said, “but cooking appears to be out of the equation. Looks like we’ll be eating energy bars.”

The Shinra energy bars did qualify as food, but barely. They were standard fare for infantrymen in the field who needed basic nutrition on the go. They tasted terrible, but at least they prevented starvation. Half a bar was about all I could stomach. Cissnei nibbled on hers as well but ate even less than I did. She looked troubled.

“The rain isn’t letting up,” she said, “and it’s getting dark. I think we’ll have to bunker down in here ‘til it passes.”

“It’s a bit tight,” I remarked, “and cold.”

“Looks like we’re huddling up for warmth!” she announced, turning toward me and wearing a sheepish grin.

I definitely blushed this time. Did she really expect me to cuddle up to her, a superior, and a rather attractive superior at that? The idea both frightened and excited me. “So - how do we do it?” I asked.

“Well, we only have one blanket,” she said. “So I guess we can lay back to back or spoon - do you have a preference?”

“Uh, um,” I stammered. Back to back would be the least inappropriate, but also the least effective. My body was still cold from the rain. “Spoon, I guess?”

“Okay,” said Cissnei, who had pulled out the blanket from her pack. “Here, lay on your left. I’ll spoon you first to help you get warm, and then you can do me - uh, I mean, help warm me - next.”

“Okay,” I said. “Um - mind if I take this off?” I showed her my bra strap from under my tanktop.

“Sure,” she said. “If you don’t mind me doing the same.” I slipped my bra off effortlessly from under my shirt - a skill honed through years of experience. Surprisingly, Cissnei was struggling. “Uh,” she began, “my shirt’s a bit tight, mind helping me out?”

She turned her back to me and lifted her shirt. I reached up to unclasp her bra from the back, and my fingers were actually shaking! I fumbled for a moment, trying not to focus on her feminine figure and soft skin. “I feel like a middle school boy,” I apologized, “usually I’m better at this.” Finally, the clasp snapped loose.

“No worries,” she said, turning to me and smiling. Her perky nipples were now showing through her shirt, and it took a great effort for me to not look right at them. She took my hand. “Sorry if I made you nervous - you probably don’t get asked to undo your teacher’s bra that often in Turk school!”

I laughed, perhaps a little too hard, and she giggled too. I caught Cissnei’s eyes, which flashed with apparent delight. Regaining my composure, I cleared my throat.

“I guess we should rest,” I said. “The sooner we sleep, the sooner we can set out tomorrow.”

“Good thinking,” Cissnei said. “Go ahead and lie down.”

I lay on my side, my hands serving as poor excuses for a pillow. I felt Cissnei lay down behind me, drawing the blanket up over us. She wrapped me in her delicate arms, and I instantly felt warmer - hot even, in places I shouldn’t admit. Her hand rested on my bicep, dangerously close to my breast. I tried to focus on sleep, condemning these dangerous thoughts, but I couldn’t elude them. I was aroused despite my efforts to suppress it.

“Are you okay?” Cissnei asked, her soft voice so close to my ear.

“Huh?”

“You’re breathing kind of heavy.”

Oh gosh, it must’ve been my reaction to being turned on. “I’m just anxious, I guess. About the mission,” I lied. “I - feel so embarrassed for losing my pack.”

“Don’t be,” Cissnei comforted. “Here - I’ll massage your arm to help relax you.”

She began to lightly stroke my arm with her fingertips. It certainly did something to me, but it did not relax me! My breathing continued to be heavy, but not wanting her to stop, I said, “That feels so good, you have no idea.”

“Hmm, I thought you might feel that way,” she said.

I sighed, trying vainly to catch my breath. “Keep going,” I said. “I - I’ve really been needing this.”

She continued stroking my arm with a light and intimate tickle. She had to know it was arousing me, right? Her hand began moving inwards towards my chest. She had just grazed my breast when I reflexively sat up straight.

“Oh my gosh!” said Cissnei. “Are you okay? I’m - I’m sorry.” She sat up too and reached to comfort me, but she stopped herself.

“No,” I said, “don’t apologize, it’s - it’s just a little unexpected. And - you’re my superior.”

“I mean, not really,” she said, shrugging. “I was assigned to mentor you, but it’s not like I’m your boss or anything. But - I get it, blurred boundaries. I - I shouldn’t have.” She looked embarrassed, and defeated. I so yearned to comfort her, so I did.

“Cissnei,” I said, putting my hand on your shoulder, “It’s okay - I really liked it.”

I saw a tear in her eye. “It’s tough being out here,” she said. “The Turks have been stretched thin, I was supposed to have a partner out here, but that fell through. I’ve been alone out here for weeks, just monitoring the reactor and helping the locals contain the monster outbreaks.”

“I get it. You were desperate for human touch. I - I can relate,” I admitted.

“It’s not just that!” she insisted. “I didn’t just touch you because I’m desperate.” She rolled her eyes. “You’re - you’re really pretty. And strong. And I guess - I’m kinda developing a crush on you. It’s because I like you, not because I’m desperate.”

Bursting with emotion, I leaned in for a kiss. I must’ve caught her off guard, but after a second, she kissed me back. “I’ve been crushing on you, too,” I said. “And I do not regret losing my pack!”

The kissing resumed, which evolved into a night of lovemaking. Cissnei was just what I needed - in more ways than one - and I’m glad she was needing me, too. We continued the mission the next day, slaying another nest of Kimara monsters, and enjoyed each other’s company for one more night. After that, Shinra HQ flew me out to Midgar to receive my first official mission. Cissnei remained in Gongaga, and I heard that she eventually left the Turks and went off the grid. I was hoping to reconnect someday, but she’s officially “in the wind” as they say. I hope my travels bring me back to Gongaga someday to see if she’s still in the area or if she left behind a trace. Only time will tell.
