Close to You (But Closer to Us)

Summary:

Den City was supposed to be an escape for Yuma.

It wasn't his fault his heart hurt whenever he looked at his friends, at places important to them, at the Key around his neck. It wasn't his fault he felt so alone when half of his soul was far away in another World. It wasn't anyone's fault but a god dead for almost four years now. He wasn't running away. But when Kaito gave him a chance to leave for a while and heal, Yuma jumped at it like the lifeline it was.

It came with a string attached, but Yuma didn't care. He could handle meeting a new roommate, maybe even a new friend! Or two.
At least this bot wasn't going to call him dumb. Instead, they scolded him for calling himself that.

But when Link Vrains, and a certain monster, catch his eye, is Den City really the break Yuma thought it would be?

Not abandoned, just on hiatus while I cement where this fic is going.

Notes:

(´・ω・)ノ

So I took a month break, sorry bout that my mental health and laptop both decided to just collapse at the same time and I'm about as put together as a skyscraper fixed with scotch tape and ramen. Such is the AO3 Author Curse.

But hey I bring a new AU! This one is shorter I swear if you've seen my past works you know I can fit all of Season 1 of Vrains into one chapter lmao
I'm not doing that here though, it'll be 3 or 4. And Season 2 will be... an experience? Let's not talk about Season 3 yet I gotta fix Season 2 first.

Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Den City was meant to be an escape for him.

The war had taken its toll on Yuma. The Barians, the moon, all of the times he had lost Astral, Kaito’s death, Alito’s, Michael and Chris’, Shark’s . It had taken its toll on him. The Numeron Code could bring everyone back, but it couldn’t erase the trauma of war.

It wasn’t Yuma’s fault he couldn’t look at Shark without tears coming to his eyes. How Shark- Ryouga- would dance around him, the two exchanging looks, what ifs , but never coming close. Ryouga was with someone else, and Yuma’s heart belonged with Astral. It was a barrier they couldn’t cross. No matter how open things were with others. Nasch put a rift between them. One neither knew how to cross, or maybe they were both unwilling to try.

It also wasn’t his fault how Yuma couldn’t look up at the sky during full moons. They were a curse to him, something tainted and broken. He kept his head low, tried to not let anyone see how tense he was, how his mind was elsewhere. Watching the replay in his mind of dragons clashing against each other, claws and fangs and beams of light and time. Of Orbital shutting down. Of Mizael’s lack of self-preservation in the face of being the only survivor. Of the moon, of the Barians too really.

It wasn’t his fault he wasn’t okay, when the main part of his soul was gone. Alive, but out of reach. Worlds apart, and Yuma could feel the lack so sharply.

It hurt.

So it wasn’t his fault when Kaito offered an escape, Yuma took it quicker than he had anything else. The words were barely out of Kaito’s mouth before Yuma agreed to them.

“Den City doesn’t have a lot of focus on dueling like Heartland, Neo Domino, or other large cities do.” Kaito explained to Yuma and Ryouga. “SOLtech has a near monopoly on dueling with Link Vrains and their new-tech duel disks that rely more on digital cards than physical ones. Similar to the new ones in Domino City.”

“So you’re shipping Yuma off to hide from his issues?” Ryouga asked bluntly.

Kaito shook his head. “No, I’m offering a chance to go where dueling is an option . You’re in senior year at Heartland High. How many mandatory classes did you have last year that required dueling?” Kaito pointed out.

Ryouga grimaced, not saying the number out loud. Yuma knew how many it was, his own schedule nearly made him sick. “But-” Ryouga cut himself off, not looking in Yuma’s direction.

It hurt. But Yuma barely felt the sting when the hope in his chest was so warm. A chance to get away for a while, to learn how to love dueling again at his own pace, not a forced one. “What’s the catch?” He knew Kaito would offer with no strings attached of course. But he also knew how Kaito would only spin the pen in his hand when he had more to say about something.

Optional , but… highly advised catch.” Kaito sighed. “I have family in Den City. A cousin, no parents. He’s sixteen like you.” He went on to explain.

“We’ve just gotten back in touch after Faker and Ren Tenjo attempted to keep our contact at zero. He isn’t big on dueling either. I think it would be good for you two to have someone to live with.” Kaito sat back in his chair, nodding to Ryouga. “We’ve paid for a small house. Three bedroom, two with their own bathrooms attached. They aren’t right next to each other or on opposite sides of a hallway so you’d both still have your privacy. You can say no though, Yuma. I was going to get it regardless of your answer. And if you say no, I have an apartment in Den you can stay in instead.”

Of course Yuma didn’t say no. He was curious the second Kaito said he had a cousin, one that Faker tried to keep him from contacting. There was a story there, but Yuma winced as he realized it was probably tied to Haruto’s illness, the WDC and the Barians too. It didn’t stop his curiosity though. And honestly?

Making a new friend sounded rather good to Yuma.

He didn’t really have the best track record with that in recent years. Ryouga had been first, and turned out to be leader of the Barians. Haruto, who was Kaito’s younger brother recovering from some form of energy illness. Kaito, who had been a Number Hunter snatching souls. Michael, an Arclight who accidentally almost combined Earth and Barian World using a card from Vetrix. Vetrix. Alito… Girag… Rio… Vector.

Maybe having a friend pushed over to him by Kaito was a better idea. Though said friend was related to Kaito too, Yuma silently hoped things didn’t turn into another Haruto incident. He didn’t know if he could keep up with another teleporting friend.

“I’ll do it.” Yuma replied. “I… I want to try.”

Kaito nodded, offering a small smile to Yuma. “If it doesn’t work out, the apartment is still optional. I think you and Yusaku might get along well, however.”

“Tell me about him then.” Yuma pleaded.

And Kaito did. But it didn’t give Yuma a good picture of Yusaku. Quiet, technologically inclined, more words Yuma didn’t really get or just didn’t pay attention to as he tried to picture Yusaku in his head. It didn’t work.

All he could picture was Astral, but if Astral had spent more time around Kaito. Okay so maybe befriending Yusaku was going to be more of the same, just with less insanity.

He hoped.

He really hoped it was less.

Den City was supposed to be an escape.

Well. Yuma was never one to back down from an adventure.

There wasn’t much adventure when it came to moving in.

Kaito had explained things to his grandma and Akari, who both agreed Yuma needed some time to just be a normal high schooler. And Den City could hopefully give him that.

Yuma didn’t have much to move. Kaito admitted the house was fully furnished, so Yuma just had his wardrobe, school things, and a few other things to bring with him. A few artifacts that he was attached to, the Key. The remaining coins made of Astralite. His duel disk and deck. A few things that each of his friends gave him.

Including a piece of crystal from Barian World. Yuma held that as close as he did the Key.

“Well Astral… next time you can visit, I might still be in Den City.” Yuma whispered, looking at the Key as he spoke. “It’s a new adventure! One that I… gotta do on my own.”

He wasn’t fully alone. Kaito and Ryouga were just a phone call away. Haruto made him promise to video call at least once every other week, so did Akari. Iris was in on that promise too. Alito and Michael were texting him nonstop, reminding him that they were always there for him. Even Vector gave him a good luck text. Yuma gripped the piece of Barianite tighter in his other hand.

He wouldn’t be physically alone either. Kaito said that Yusaku agreed to the housing situation. And Kaito had passed along a message to Yuma.

“Yusaku isn’t moving in alone. He has a carebot, Roboppi. Similar to Orbital but… younger.” Kaito finally settled on saying. “ Very similar to Orbital. Think of them as Orbital’s…”

“Nibling is the word you’re looking for.” Ryouga smirked. “I have no clue about them, so don’t look at me, Yuma.”

Roboppi sounded like fun. He hoped they could get along better than he did with Orbital and Lilly at least. He did like the two bots, but there were only so many jokes about himself he could take in a day. Yuma sighed, slipping the Key around his neck and picking up the last bag he had. “Bye mom, bye dad.” He whispered, looking at the picture in the attic one last time.

He wouldn’t be taking it with. Let Akari keep it, Yuma didn’t want to look at it any more. It hurt, they should’ve been a part of the conversation about him going to Den City. But they weren’t . Yuma didn’t know where they were, and if he looked at it any longer, he wasn’t sure if he could keep from crying.

So he left, walking down to the car Kaito had for the day. Orbital could only become a motorcycle, and Ryouga’s own bike was too small to move Yuma’s things plus the three of them for the trip there. “You know how to drive something that isn’t sentient?” Yuma joked with a cheeky grin.

“You will too in a few months.” Kaito smirked lightly. “Den offers driving courses after you turn seventeen. If you do good, maybe there’ll be a surprise for your eighteenth birthday.”

“Don’t spoil it.” Ryouga complained, motioning for Yuma to get into the car. “Come on! We’re wasting daylight.”

“It’s a half hour trip!” Yuma pouted. Ryouga acted as if they were going hours away. Yuma climbed into the car, grinning when he saw Haruto and Iris there too. “Guess it’s a fun little vacation day?”

“Yep!” Haruto grinned back at Yuma as Iris waved shyly. “We’re here to help you and Yusaku! I can’t wait for it, Kaito says I haven’t seen Yusaku since I was like two. I don’t remember it though. But he said dad said it’s fine to see him now!”

So they were both moving in on the same day? Yuma smiled, feeling true excitement at that. It would be interesting at least. He slid the piece of Barianite into his pocket, and soon, they were off.

The ride was nice. Haruto and Iris were full of chatter once they were on the road and Ryouga kept the conversations going. Kaito cutting in once or twice with commentary of his own. Yuma listened for the most part, twisting and turning the Key in his hands. His mind was filled with questions. What would Den City be like? What about the school there? And that VR game that was big in Den, Link Vrains? What would that be like? Would Yusaku like the game? Was it something they could maybe do together?

He heard Haruto continue talking about things, and Yuma chuckled. “Are we sure Haruto isn’t the one going to Den High? He sounds more excited than anyone.” He joked.

“No way! I don’t wanna go to a new school.” Haruto shook his head. “I like the Heartland school. And I don’t wanna leave Iris alone in class by herself!”

Yuma smiled, patting Haruto’s head. “Good. How about this, you keep an eye on Iris, and I’ll keep an eye on Yusaku for you, okay?”

He hadn’t been able to keep an eye on Kaito. But he swore to himself he’d keep the promise to Haruto this time. He wouldn’t fail, the Code wouldn’t be needed twice.

The house was a small one, it was a comfort really. Yuma didn’t know what he would do if it was something big. Two stories, plain white paint outside, dark roof. The only splash of vibrant color to be found was the small blue bot busy cleaning the door wherever they could reach. They seemed rather busy, though the door looked spotless.

“Roboppi.” Kaito said as he got out of the car, everyone else following. “Is Yusaku inside?”

“Master is inside!” The bot, Roboppi, chirped happily. Yuma watched as a waving emoji appeared on their display. “We had help moving things and he’s resting now!”

Kaito nodded, turning towards Yuma. “This is Roboppi.” He introduced. “Roboppi, this is Yuma. He’s moving in too.”

“Hello!” Roboppi switched to a different wave emoji, just as friendly as the last one was, before going back to their usual display of two yellow rectangle eyes. “I’ve already cleaned all of the rooms!”

“Huh, so they’re like Lilly then?” Yuma tilted his head, following Kaito and Roboppi inside. Yuma smiled softly, already seeing a ramp at the front step into the house for the little bot. He made a mental note to make sure he didn’t move it. The inside of the house was quiet, the front hall leading into what Yuma guessed was the living room. The walls were a soft beige color, with hardwood flooring. It was furnished, with two couches, a chair, long coffee table, and a sizeable TV. Yuma thought it was almost too much.

But it looked like back home too.

“Yusaku isn’t one for decorating.” Kaito walked further in. “So every room except the bedrooms is just based on other houses.”

That explained a lot. But Yuma hoped Kaito hadn’t just used ones Yuma knew. The space was going to be Yusaku’s as well, even if he wasn’t big on decorating. He followed Kaito further into the house, Haruto dashing ahead of them. Yuma raised an eyebrow at the sound of typing and a soft swear being said.

“Yusaku. Language.” Kaito’s voice was raised slightly, alerting who Yuma assumed was Yusaku to them being there.

“English.” Yusaku responded as Haruto ran into the open door at the end of the hallway. “Haruto doesn’t know the words I said.”

“I totally know them.” Yuma could hear the grin in Haruto’s voice. He stopped outside of the door even as Kaito walked into the room. It must be Yusaku’s room, and Yuma didn’t want to start off living with someone new by just barging into their room.

“Put down the motherboard and come meet Yuma.” Kaito had that tone that Yuma recognized. The same one he’d have with Haruto sometimes. The one that made Ryouga mutter a soft ‘mother hen’ behind Yuma, making Yuma nearly laugh out loud.

Iris giggled at it for the both of them.

And then, Yuma finally saw who he would be living with for the foreseeable future. Blue hair with light blue and pink bangs, sharp green eyes with light purple flecks, he was taller than Kaito by about an inch or so. He was beautiful, if Yuma was honest. Nothing Kaito told him prepared Yuma for meeting Yusaku face-to-face. There was a guarded look in his eyes, a caution Yuma had seen before. In Ryouga, before they were friends. In Vector, after they all came back. In Astral, before golden eyes turned warm towards him.

Just what was Yusaku’s story, Yuma wondered. There had to be a reason behind that look, behind why Faker tried to keep communication between Katio and Yusaku at a minimum. Yusaku didn’t look dangerous , so there had to be something else.

Yuma wanted to befriend him.

He opened his mouth, almost saying the words that he somewhat dreaded himself. To ask Yusaku for a duel. But the words never came. Kaito said Yusaku wasn’t into dueling. And honestly, Yuma didn’t want to start any friendship with him with a duel.

“S-sorry… guess I look pretty stupid just standing here like this.” Yuma laughed sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head.

“Forbidden!” Roboppi appeared near Yusaku’s feet, gaining everyone’s attention. “Stupid is a forbidden word! Especially when talking about yourself!”

Yuma blinked in surprise. “...Huh?”

“Stupid is forbidden when speaking about yourself.” Roboppi repeated, waving one arm up and down as if to scold Yuma. And he did feel scolded.

But more than that, he felt a bit happier. At least this bot wasn’t going to call him dumb then. Yuma smiled softly, nodding in agreement with Roboppi’s words. “Okay, no more stupid then.”

That seemed like the right call to make. The guarded look in Yusaku’s eyes seemed to let up just a bit at that. It seemed he was protective of the small bot then, Yuma could see why. Roboppi was quite chipper, and took their duties seriously if the way they went right back to cleaning was any indication. Yuma decided to leave them alone to work, eyes drifting back to Yusaku.

He was speaking to Kaito as the two walked down the hallway to the main room, his voice too soft for Yuma to pick up. The family resemblance was clear, but Yusaku also reminded him of some of his friends. The look in his eyes was like Durbe’s whenever Yuma would badger him for stories of the past, the tenseness in his shoulders mirrored how Kotori would sometimes be around strangers now.

As the day went on, that tenseness eased. Yuma was busy moving into his room- which really was just bare bones. A bed, a dresser, a desk, Yuma had joked about moving into a school dorm. Though that wasn’t too far off. Haruto and Iris seemed more interested in Yusaku than in helping him and Ryouga. Yusaku had undying patience for the two as they asked question after question about him, Haruto wanting to know more about his cousins and Iris curious about a person she had never met but Haruto seemed comfortable around. Yuma chuckled as he brought in the last suitcase of his clothes. The two finally seemed satisfied with whatever answers they had been given to their questions and had moved on to asking Roboppi things.

“You gonna be alright here?” Ryouga asked Yuma as he set down the box of books. He opened the box, taking out the first book- which was just some school book.

Yuma smiled softly, grabbing the Key from the desk where Kaito had placed it. “It’s just another new adventure, yeah? I’ll be fine.” Yuma reassured him.

“You know if it’s too much or doesn’t work out… you can come back, stay with us. Big ass mansion or long ass tower, take your pick.” Ryouga murmured, voice getting softer as he went on. “You don’t gotta… be all isolated and shit.”

Yuma blinked, looking at Ryouga, who refused to meet his eyes.

There was a lot left unsaid between the two of them. A lot that they had just never spoke of again. Things between them that no one else could understand. A rift that had been patched with flimsy string and planks that just didn’t quite reach far enough.

It was rich, coming from the guy who was the king of isolating himself.

But Ryouga belonged to someone else. And as much as Astral wanted Yuma to live a full human life, he couldn’t do it pinning after Ryouga for the rest of his years.

“I already promised to call every week thanks to the kids!” Yuma laughed, giving Ryouga another smile. “Besides, Roboppi seems like good company, and Yusaku is…” Yuma trailed off. Not sure how to finish that.

Not yet, at least.

“Yeah yeah.” Ryouga shook his head. “Fine, we gotta… get going soon.”

And soon enough, Yuma was left in his room alone.

The first night was hard. He didn’t go out to see where Yusaku was, and Yusaku didn’t check on him. Which Yuma expected. Yusaku seemed like a rather private person and Yuma was still getting his bearings in a new place. Really, the silence was comforting. It wasn’t as if there was no noise in the house. He could hear Roboppi moving around the hallway, their wheels on the hardwood floor reminding him of Lilly working around the house.

If he listened carefully, he could hear Yusaku working on something too. The sound of clacking keys on a keyboard, the occasional murmured curse or something said in a language Yuma didn’t quite know. He stifled a few laughs at one phrase that sounded like a rather creative swear. But Yuma couldn’t spend the entire night just in his room listening to everything going on around him.

Kaito said the entire kitchen was stocked, and things had been labeled for each of them, there were no set cooking times or when they could use the kitchen, just no arguing over it... It made Yuma want to laugh more. Like they were that pair of cats Michael and Thomas found one time, having to get used to each other through a closed door. Well, it was time for Yuma to open that door then.

He wasn’t the only one, Yuma grinned as he walked into the kitchen, finding Roboppi already there, busy cleaning the already clean cabinets. “Having fun?” Yuma tilted his head.

“Yes!” Came the enthusiastic reply from Roboppi. “Are you cooking?”

“Gonna try to.” Yuma grinned sheepishly. “I don’t know many recipes, but there’s one my grandma taught me. Do… you think Yusaku might wanna try it?”

Three dots appeared on Roboppi’s display as they thought. “Master has already eaten. I made sure! But depending on what it is, he may try some later?”

“It’s just riceballs.” Yuma hummed, finding the rice cooker easily enough. “Is he allergic to anything? Like fish?”

“Master loves fish! And hot dogs too.” Roboppi shook their head. “He’s only allergic to celery!”

“I’ll remember that then.” Yuma nodded. He didn’t like celery all that much, so there was no issue there.

The silence in the kitchen was nice as Roboppi went back to work and Yuma waited for the rice, finding the ingredients to add to it easily enough. Kaito had gone all out getting them started with groceries, Yuma smiled softly at that. He would have to get more creative with meals later, knowing that he couldn’t just survive on riceballs alone. He could make a few other easy things! But riceballs, duel fuel as he liked to call them, were a comfort.

Maybe they could be a way to break the ice with Yusaku. Food always seemed to be a good starting point at least. And Yuma was as good with food as he was dueling! At least, he hoped he was. Yuma wasn’t sure if Yusaku would like anything Yuma did, but it was worth a shot. Roboppi said he liked fish, and there was salmon stocked in the fridge. So he would start with salmon riceballs.

It was easy for Yuma to fall into the familiar motions of making them. For a moment, everything felt alright to him. As if things hadn’t just changed so rapidly around him. Not that it was a bad change. “Astral, I-”

Yuma cut himself off, looking at the empty space to his right. It wasn’t empty though, and what had prompted him to speak was down far further than Astral could ever get to. Roboppi had poked his leg to get his attention.

“Astral?” There was a question mark on their display. “Roboppi just wanted to say that the cupboards where I could reach are clean!”

Yuma smiled sadly. “Don’t worry about it. And thanks, Roboppi. Hey did you find any large stock pots down there?” He asked.

“I did!” The question mark was replaced with an exclamation point. “There are two pots like that to the left of the sink!”

“Awesome!” Yuma said happily. “Then maybe if Yusaku likes this, I can ask my grandma for the fish stew recipe she has. Make enough meals for both of us for a few days. Give me something to do besides homework.” He half joked. Really, without dueling, Yuma didn’t know what he was going to fill his free time with yet.

Maybe cooking could be a good way to spend that time. Plus getting to know his new roommate. It was beginning to feel like when he first met Astral, just… a lot more quiet. Yusaku hadn’t appeared in the kitchen yet, not even to check on Roboppi. But Yuma guessed that made sense, it seemed as though Yusaku had had Roboppi for a long time, trusting them to handle things on their own without him hovering.

Or maybe Yusaku just wasn’t the hovering type.

Yuma wasn’t sure which answer made him feel better. But he wasn’t going to let the awkwardness stay around. He shook his head, finishing off the riceballs with a hum. “Okay. Maybe not tonight, but I’m totally gonna be Yusaku’s friend by the end of the school year at least!”

“Good! Master needs friends.” Roboppi chirped, raising both of their arms, copying Yuma. “He only has Kusanagi, but he is more like a father to Yusaku.”

“Huh? Then why didn’t Yusaku stay with him?” Yuma wondered as he put a few riceballs on two plates, putting the others away in the fridge.

“Master says Kusanagi has enough to worry about without worrying about him. Because his brother is sick.” Roboppi admitted, a shrug emoji appearing. “Because of the-”

“Roboppi. That’s enough.”

Yuma blinked at the firm tone Yusaku used, turning around to see him standing in the entrance to the kitchen with a light glare in wisteria colored eyes. He didn’t say anything for a moment, making sure Roboppi didn’t continue on. “He’s sick. That’s all.” Yusaku murmured.

“Gotcha.” Yuma nodded, knowing there was more to it than that. But the look in Yusaku’s eyes told him not to press the matter. “Sorry, I was just… curious. I made some food though!” Yuma brightened up, motioning to the plates on the table.

“Take one! They’re salmon riceballs, duel fuel is what I used to call them.” Yuma admitted, catching the minute wince in Yusaku’s shoulders at that. “It’s just a silly name for it though. Since I… don’t duel all that much now.” He chuckled nervously.

“They’re good fuel though! All that typing, it sounds like you’re busy, so you gotta keep your energy up, and I wanted some too so I figured I’d make enough for both of us.” Yuma rambled, waiting to see Yusaku’s reaction.

It was guarded, but Yuma could see the tension lessen slightly. Yusaku was a lot like Kaito, Yuma noticed. Stiff in his movements, but leaving room to react in an instant if things changed. Much like that new cat Cathy had gotten a year ago, a battle-hardened stray she took in. But as Roboppi wheeled over to Yusaku, the tension eased greatly.

“The kitchen is all clean too!” Roboppi added happily.

“Yeah! Roboppi did an amazing job. And I’m cleaning the dishes I used too.” Yuma said, smiling as Yusaku finally took one of the plates.

“... Thank you.” Yusaku whispered softly, looking contemplatively at the plate of riceballs.

Yuma smiled, even though Yusaku said no more. He went to clean the dishes off as Yusaku and Roboppi left the kitchen. Small steps. He didn’t have to rush things, and Yusaku didn’t seem like the type to like rushing matters either.

Small steps in the right direction. Yuma could learn to slow down a bit. Instead of his own fast pace, maybe he could try taking things at Yusaku’s instead.

The dishes were easy to finish off, and Yuma retired to his own room, not hearing any more typing going on. So instead, he did some of his own. Slow and steady with friendships, but Link Vrains seemed to move rather quickly, and Yuma wanted to see what was up with it.

It was primarily a dueling game, with Charisma Duelists taking the top spots. Yuma thought IV would be into that sort of thing, he didn’t pay much attention other than seeing two names at the top; Blue Angel and Go. Interesting.

What caught his attention more though, was the live chat going on. It started out slow, Yuma catching just a few things here or there about different duels or events going on.

Until suddenly, someone appeared in all capitalized letters, the words screaming and sending the chat into a frenzy it seemed. Yuma frowned, trying to keep up as it scrolled on and on, until a video appeared.

“Who is… Playmaker?” Yuma whispered to himself, clicking on the video. It appeared after the quick antivirus Kaito had installed scanned it. Yuma tilted his head. “Knights of Hanoi? What in the Four is that?”

The video was a duel, and Yuma sat up straighter in his chair as he looked at what was going on with the field. The Knight of Hanoi was dressed in a white outfit, a mask covering most of his face. He didn’t look too remarkable to Yuma. Neither did the small dragon on his side of the field.

No, what caught Yuma’s attention was the other duelist. Wearing a black and green suit with yellow accents. His hair was primarily red, with yellow and pink bangs. And the duelist’s eyes, they were a vibrant leaf-green color, filled with anger as he faced the Hanoi.

On his side of the field, was Photon Thrasher. “That’s Kaito’s monster?!” Yuma yelped, jumping up from his seat. There was no way that the duelist- Playmaker- could be Kaito though. When Yuma had asked Kaito about Link Vrains before moving, he had rolled his eyes at it, claiming it was something specific to Den City, for the moment anyway. He had no interest in it.

If Playmaker was Kaito, he would’ve warned Yuma away from Link Vrains, wouldn’t he? So then there was another duelist that could use Photon monsters. The other monster on his field was a dragon Yuma didn’t recognize, but the feed told him it was Guardragon Agarpain. The feed didn’t stop there.

There were plenty of calls for Playmaker to end the duel quickly, to get rid of the Hanoi he was facing for good. Yuma frowned. Just what were the Knights of Hanoi, if people wanted them defeated so badly? It seemed that Playmaker paid no mind to the chats, if he could see them at all during the duel. But he did as most were calling for.

One final attack finished the duel just as quick as it began. And Playmaker didn’t stick around for much longer afterwards.

Well, it seemed like Den City wasn’t going to be as quiet as Yuma thought. His interest had been caught. Who were the Knights of Hanoi? And who was Playmaker, the strange duelist who could use Photon cards, and Link summoning? Yuma hummed, sitting back down.

No, those weren’t his questions to chase after. Maybe it was all a play. After all, Link Vrains seemed very popular, of course there would be events with “bad guys” in them to keep things fresh. That’s what it had to be.

But what if it wasn’t? Yuma groaned.

Well, maybe he could find out more at school. It was his first day on Monday, and if anyone would know the gossip about it, it would be a school full of students. Yuma knew that from experience, given he had been at the center of a lot of duel gossip before.

Whatever it was, he was just curious. Nothing more. He missed the sound of a door opening somewhere in the house as he thought about Link Vrains more. If he didn’t want to duel, he could still make friends and maybe check it out too. He looked at the screen again. The game was open to new members joining it. Perhaps someone at school could help him out with that! And Yuma could make more friends. There was a new event going on in Link Vrains, one that wasn’t focused on dueling.

Maybe he could even ask Yusaku about it.

Later, Yuma decided. He would ask later. When it wasn’t late at night.

School was going to be very interesting though, Yuma thought, and Den City looked to be a brand new adventure.

Notes:

Tada!

Expect a few Zexal cameos, but not much from that side of things. They're all off doing their own shit while Yuma's getting dragged into Vrains! And by 'doing their own shit' I mean either getting help for their own issues, ignoring their own issues, or too busy terrorizing Nasch to care about what's going on online! Or they're busy with new dragon babies thank you Konami for finally letting Tachyon be a mother.

We gonna follow Vrains this time around though! So... here goes something!
