Work Text:

It is a beautiful day in New Orleans, 1936, and Alastor finds himself prowling the streets in search of his mother’s god forsaken cat.

The gentle woman had found the damn thing as a kitten in a dumpster, it had been so tiny and cute with ears too big for its body and fluffy little stubbed tail. It was an odd shade of dark red, with black tipped ears, paws and tail. There were small black line patterns on its head, Alastor swore they were demon horns. His mother had thought it funny to name the tiny thing Al and it had quickly bonded to her.

And only her.

After her passing Alastor had hoped it would sulk away into the bayou and pass from heartache. But the bane of his existence continues on just to spite the radio host and he is obligated to take care of it, one of his Mothers dying wishes. The other was for Alastor to live a long and happy life and that likely was not going to happen as a serial killer so he compromised. The cat had grown to be abnormally large and vicious for its species, he wonders if it is part bob cat. And it hated Alastor as much as he hated it, likely plotting his death around every corner of the house.

He had come home after his radio show this morning to feed the little beast and it had not shown up. So, out of love for his deceased Mother, Alastor had combed the woods, its usual hunting grounds, and now the uptown streets of his home town in search of the demonic cat. He was likely going to get the cops called on him being on this side of town. Alastor was running on empty and desperately wanted to return home and sleep before his next shift. If he was lucky someone had finally run the cat over with their automobile and released him from this torture. But until he found the body he would have to keep looking.

“What the fuck is that? Is that a fucking cat? Hey! Don’t fucking look at me like that! That’s a weird looking fucking cat..”

Alastor stops dead in the uppity neighborhood, dread dropping like a stone in his gut. It would be just his luck the damn thing decided to attack one of these rich Joes. The radio host stands still to try and figure out which direction the voice is coming from.

“Charlie no! Stay on the porch there’s a weird looking cat outside! I don’t want it starting a fight with Luci! Luci it’s ok pspsps it’s ok Luci don’t worry about it!”

“Daddy it’s just a kitty! Can I play with it!”

Oh good lord now there was a child involved. From the sound of the voice not too young of a kid but possibly still small enough to be prey size to the deranged animal. Alastor quickly starts heading down the street, looking through every gated fence hoping to make it in time to tackle his own cat to the ground like a criminal.

“Hey get the fuck outta here! I don’t even know if that’s a fucking cat… blink mother fucker!”

The radio host skids to a stop at an open gate to find Al standing off with a man waving a cane at it. A little blonde girl who must be around five or six stands on the porch by the door, eyes sparkling at the less innocent creature she believes to just be a cat. The man is quite short, even for the average standard, and delicate looking. He would be an easy target for the tomcat. White blonde hair shines like a halo in the sun, rosy cheeks stand out on his other wise flawless light skin, and sky blue eyes look panicked at the evil thing that has invaded his yard. He wears a nice white dress suit with a red vest, clearly from the upper echelon of society. The man is oddly beautiful, even to Alastor’s usually unfazed gaze.

“Excuse me!” Alastor huffs and holds a placating hand up, hoping it will help in not getting the coppers called on him, “I’m terribly sorry but that’s my cat.”

Al doesn’t even acknowledge his owners presence, just staring unblinkingly with its eerie yellow eyes in one direction, body still and tail high at attention. Alastor follows its intense stare to see another cat lounging unfazed on the high wall of the property. It is a beautiful white and blonde Birman cat, the sun shining on its fluffy fur and giving off an air that it is possibly better then everyone in the yard, including the scruffy thing posing as a cat in this life.

“It actually is a cat?!” The lovely man squawks and squints at Al again, as if he doesn’t believe its owner.

“Possibly.” Alastor’s breath finally slows and he stands up to his full height, he is at least a head or more taller then the little rich man, “I’ve been looking for him I’m terribly sorry for the ruckus.”

“Please just take it! It won’t stop staring at Luci.” The blonde takes a step towards the half feral cat, it spits a hiss out like a viper, fur raised and back high in defense. It is one of his more shocking noises you would not believe a cat could make.

The radio host slowly creeps behind the cat, hoping to catch it by surprise, “Perhaps your cat is in heat-“

“Luci is a male!” The small man hisses.

“…He was found in a dumpster, I don’t believe he’s that smart….” He sends a prayer to his mother that he does not strangle her stupid cat.

Alastor pounces on the tomcat and wraps his arms around it. Al immediately latches his fangs into his hand and claws at him to get free, paws flailing like crazy as if it’s is being kidnapped. He could only wish.

“Oh oh my.. um..maybe you should sit him back down.” the blonde looks genuinely concerned for the other man.

“Oh no it’s fine!” Alastor tries to smile reassuringly as the cat continues to maul him, “I’m use to it.”

The man’s daughter choses this moment to bounce down the walkway towards the vicious animal. Alastor is surprised her Father allows her near him, most take one look at his skin color and jerk their children away like he is contagious.

“My names Charlie! Can I pet your kitty?” Charlie beams up at the tall man, clearly missing that it is currently trying to amputate his owners limb.

“Uh, maybe another time Dear, when he is more…calm. My name is Alastor, it is lovely to meet you.” The radio host nods his head at the little blonde girl, she has a striking resemblance to her Father.

“Lucifer.”

Alastor turns his attention back to the other man, who is standing with his own cat now lounging lazily in his arms, “We just moved in.”

Al calms down immediately as it spots the other cat so close by. A noise he has not heard since his mother passed vibrates its whole body. Purring. Alastor honestly thought the cat had lost the ability. The tall man can even feel its little stubby tail wag like a dog as it gazes at the other feline. It really is a lovely specimen when compared to his alley trash abomination. The white fluffy cat surveys the other one with clear blue eyes, like it’s calculating the other’s worth and not at all disturbed by its heinous behavior.

Now that the cat is calm Alastor is able to reach a slightly bloody hand out to the smaller man, “Again, sorry for the ruckus. I will make sure it does not happen again.”

“It’s fine” Lucifer actually takes the other man’s hand in his own delicate one and shakes it politely, “Probably just cats establishing territory or something.”

Alastor leaves the small estate with his cat yowling the whole way home. Glad to have the whole thing behind him and likely never to see the little family again.

————————————————

Lucifer must hear one of Alastor’s shows as he begins calling in to request the man pick his cat up, that continues to make the trek to find Luci.

He finally has to give the small man his address to drop the cat off when he is not home. It is getting tiring to walk to the rich part of town every other day and callers were becoming invested in his cat’s love life and requesting updates. The radio host has never divulged such damning information. He only hopes the blonde does not stumble up his driveway one day when he is dragging a body to the swamp.

Through the grape vine Alastor has learned the other man is a widower, his wife dying in child birth. It was evidently a big scandal as she had married the small man against her parent’s wish and the two had run away together. Lucifer had recently moved to New Orleans, unable to continue in the couples old home filled with her memory. The cat, Luci, had been a gift for Charlie.

The two men had decided the normally savage tomcat was not attempting to harm the fluffy pure bred, but had a little crush on him. The white cat had yet to offer any kind of indication it enjoyed the red demons advances but they never fought and seemed to tolerate the love sick thing. They had struck an easy acquaintance and would chat for a few minutes each time Alastor had to fetch the damn cat. Lucifer did not seem to care the taller man was clearly mixed race and his daughter was thrilled each time Al showed up.

The radio host had just awaken at lunch after his late night shift at the station to find the offensive animal gone again. He sighed heavily, knowing he would need to make the trip to the Magne estate before work to fetch the alley cat. He put on a pot of coffee, hoping to at least get a few minutes of peace without the beast staring at him behind corners of the house.

“Alastor you home?” A call for the front yard yelled out.

The tall man’s eye twitched, still regretting sharing his address in moments like this but made his way to the front porch.

“Good morning Lucifer.” He grumbled as he watched the smaller man walk up his driveway.

Luci sits in his arms like a king that a peasant is transporting, Al walking behind them with its yellow eyes trained on the other. The cat likely thinks it has won and the blonde is bringing Luci like a sacrifice to live its new life as a captive bride. Alastor tightens his robe, glaring at the tomcat like he can make it spontaneously combust.

“The only way I could convince him to leave was for Al to follow Luci and I back to your home.” Lucifer apologizes as he stops at the bottom of the stairs.

The cat walks past Alastor and into the house like it’s his own home, not even sparing its owner a glance. Before the cat realizes Luci is not accompanying it into his new abode the radio host slams the door shut so Al can’t escape. An unearthly screech can be heard from within and a sound like a saw attacks the door. Both men stare in mild fear that it can get free.

“He has been bringing dead animals and leaving them on my porch!” Lucifer finally speaks while stroking Luci’s fur reassuringly, the cat does not look a bit fazed, “Rabbits, crows, large rats! Today it left a hawk! I didn’t know cats could even hunt hawks!”

Alastor’s not surprised, he saw the cat stare down a gator once. The poor prehistoric dinosaur had looked so confused as it backed down into the swamp, reptilian eyes seemly questioning it’s place in the food chain as the cat hissed and marched toward it. Not a bit afraid to be near the water where the beast could drag it under.

“I’d watch for a deer offering next” Alastor watches the door suspiciously as the noise inside dies down. He is pretty sure all the windows are shut but the monster inside is probably checking.

“Has it hunted deer before?!” The small man gasps in horror, clutching the white cat close.

The radio host smirks as he turns his attention back to the other, he can be so gullible, “Not yet, but I suspect it’s only a matter of time..”

For the first time since they have met Lucifer laughs. A genuine smile spreads on Alastor’s face at the sound, it’s surprisingly melodious, “Luci did seem impressed with the hawk, I just hope he hasn’t brought it in the house and hid it somewhere.”

Alastor laughs as well, picturing the blonde’s squeal if he finds the dead bird stashed in his bed.

“I like your hair like this.” Lucifer twirls a hand by his own hair.

Alastor freezes, touching his hair in shock to find it is in its more naturally curly state. He had yet to run a hot comb through it as he had just rolled out of bed.

“Why don’t you usually wear it like this?” The smaller man asks innocently.

The radio host sighs, not wanting to go into the benefits of blending in to white society with the other man. Lucifer is either too naive or kind to realize how racially profiled the tall man will be treated if he were to go around town like this.

“I just made a pot of coffee if you would like some.” Alastor offers before his caffeine deprived brain realizes what he has done.

“Oh! Sure! Charlie is with her tutor this morning so I have time.” Lucifer bounces on his toes, clearly thrilled which causes Alastor to just open the door in shock.

Luci lets himself in like it’s his own home and the two men follow. Al is poised on the counter, a coffee cup precariously balancing on the edge until he spots the white cat. He abandons his revenge to hop down and stare unblinkingly as its obsession finds a nice spot on the window sill to lick its paw and groom its head.

Alastor just shakes his head at the poor fool and pours Lucifer a cup of fresh coffee.

———————————————

Alastor strolls up the Magne drive way to pick up his arch nemesis. He has work in a few hours and would like to get some lunch before his night shift. Al was evidently serenading Luci outside in the lawn all night and Lucifer had called the station furious. The radio host had at least got some sleep before making the trek out here, a bag of fresh coffee beans the blonde seems to like as an apology clutched in his hand.

He finds the damn cat sitting at a tea party with Charlie. A big yellow bow has been tied to its neck as it watches Luci purr in the little girls lap. Charlie coos at “O’Malley the alley cat” as she has dubbed him and pats his head after filling his tea cup with nothing. He marvels that the little girl doesn’t have a scratch on her, the white cat in her lap watching the clearly more vicious cat like a predator to keep it in line.

“Oh hi Alastor! Fancy a cup of tea!” Charlie smiles up at him, a front tooth missing that makes the girl even more charming.

For the first time in its hateful life, the cat looks up at Alastor with pleading eyes. He thinks it is truly pitiful how far the tomcat has fallen to win the affection of the Birman. The radio host sits down in one of the empty seats at the tea party and basks in the rare suffering of his cat.

“Finally!”

Alastor turns his attention to the porch to see Lucifer standing in a silky robe looking disheveled and like he hasn’t slept all night. The smaller man’s usually styled hair is parted down the middle and framing his face past his ears. If he curled it his almost feminine features could pass as a flapper style. He thinks even he would be hard pressed to realize the blonde was not a woman if he was in one of their short fringed dancing dresses.

Alastor gives the man his most charming smile, a grin that has charmed many a victim back to his bayou to hunt, and holds up the bag of coffee as a peace offering.

Lucifer’s eye twitches at the other man, clearly not as dazzled by his smile as others. The taller man shoots a glare at the red devil beside him, who has chosen this moment to lick his balls uncaringly. He wonders how mad his mother would truly be if the thing joined her prematurely in the afterlife.

Charlie gives the radio host a knowing look and tilts her head back towards her Father, putting her little hands in prayer in front of herself so the small man can’t see her. Alastor sighs in defeat and rises from the little table, preparing himself to grovel for forgiveness at his tomcats rude behavior like it is in any way in his control.

———————————————-

The radio host has one of his few days off and is enjoying a book at his kitchen table while listening to his personal radio. It is a rare day where the crimson beast has blessed him with quiet and stayed home all day.

Currently Al is basking in the sun on the window sill, stretched out lazily with his soft belly up in the air. But only a fool would attempt to pet the demons underbelly and risk losing a finger. The fiend rarely lets anyone within two feet of it, only his Mother had its blessing to carry it around like a baby or burry her hands in the red fur.

Alastor glares at the tomcat and returns back to his book and coffee. He tries not to jinx his luck and tempt the cat into its usual nefarious deeds by drawing attention to its lapse into good behavior. The universe could be cruel like that.

Suddenly a loud thump and scratching brings his eyes back to the window. Al has his face pressed to the glass and paws slowly clawing at the barrier, he is mildly concerned the damn cat might actually scratch the glass. A loud purring rumbles from the demon, never losing focus on what’s upsetting it outside.

Alastor wonders if it’s the gator, coming back to defend its honor or scrape back its dignity. Maybe he would get lucky and the giant lizard would be a man and actually eat the tomcat. He rises and makes his way to the window, peering outside above the cats head.

“Little tempter!”

Luci is outside under the blooming willow tree, lying among the petals in the most picturesque, romantic scene possible for a cat. Its fluffy white tail lazily flicks back and forth, eyes focused on the feral animal inside the house. Alastor watches as the beautiful white cat slowly rolls over on its back, showing off its belly and wiggling in the pink petals.

“Floozy!” Alastor huffs as his cat yowls and attempts to break through the damn glass of the window.

Alastor has to fight almost to the death to get out the door without the tomcat. He has various scratches and fang marks covering his body he will be sure to ask Lucifer compensation for. The man makes his way to Luci, who stares at him bored from the bottom of the tree clearly enjoying itself. The white cat purrs up at him, pawing at him to pick the lazy thing up.

The pure breeds fur is surprisingly soft when he bends to pick it up. Luci nuzzles his chin and peeks coyly over his shoulder back at the house. Alastor looks back to see his cat glaring daggers at him, pacing back and forth on the window sill like a tiger. He can only imagine the state his home will be in upon his return as he heads towards Luci’s owners estate.

When he makes it to the Magne property he finds Lucifer and Charlie just exiting their home dressed in their Sunday best.

“Oh Alastor! I had wondered where Luci wandered off.” Lucifer smiles warmly up at the taller man.

The radio host lets the white cat hop down and it meanders across the garden unapologetically. Probably off to tempt some other poor house cat into a life of crime and murder.

“Daddy and I were about to walk to the park to feed the ducks!” Charlie hops up and down excitedly, “Want to join us?”

Lucifer blushes at his daughter, fiddling with his cane as he looks anywhere but the other man, “Yea, um, you should join us since you came all this way.”

Alastor thinks longingly of his book abandoned on his kitchen table. But then he thinks of the hostile creature also waiting for him back at home, likely plotting to take a pound of flesh from his neck where the white cat rubbed its scent. He has found many a trinkets of Luci’s, from toys, fur, to bows, in Al’s bed in his mother’s old room and knows he will covet anything that reminds him of the other. It’s truly disturbing and pathetic.

“That sounds lovely.” The taller man sighs in defeat and follows the blondes to the park.

Alastor learns more about ducks on this little outing then he could have ever thought possible from the short blonde man.

———————————————-

It’s late afternoon on a Tuesday when Alastor realizes he is out of coffee and needs to make a quick stop to the store before his late night shift at the station. It could mean someone’s life if he did not have coffee in the morning.

He has not seen Al all day but has also not heard from Lucifer so he figures it is fine. The two men are ruled by the tomcats schedule most of the time but have accepted their fate in joint custody of both cats. One or the other is usually at either bachelors house and they only fetch them if Charlie asks or they become a nuisance.

As he steps onto his front porch however, the radio host is greeted by the sight of said blonde standing at the bottom of his stairs.

“Oh Alastor!” Lucifer looks shocked, like he did not expect the taller man at his own home for some reason, “I was um just checking to see if Luci is here.”

The radio host looks around the sparse yard attached to the swampland but does not see either cat.

“I figured they were at your house. Where’s Charlie?” It was late for the little girl to still have tutoring and the smaller man never let anyone else watch her.

“She is having a sleep over at her friend Vaggie’s home haha.” Lucifer laughs nervously, possibly over his daughter being out of his sight for a night the other man supposes.

The blonde leans against the porch railing, twirling one of his curls by his ear and blushing pink, “Since I’m here maybe you could invite me in for some coffee?”

“Ah! I was just about to step out and retrieve some from the store before it closes if you would like to join.” Alastor hums, the other man’s company enjoyable most of the time. The radio host actually found himself seeking it out at times even when his damn cat was not causing mischief.

“Oh no I was thinking more about just staying in you see.” Lucifer raises an eye brow trying to get something across that Alastor is clearly missing.

The smaller man’s eye twitches as the other man stares blankly back and he stomps up the rest of the steps to get on equal ground with the other. Alastor just watches as the blonde huffs exasperated, unsure what he has done to cause offense.

“For being so clever you are kind of dense!”

Lucifer grabs Alastor by the collar and hoists him down to his level, crushing their lips together. The radio host is so shocked for a moment he just stands there as the other man kisses him, sliding their lips together as he stands on his tip toes to reach.

Months worth of teasing and dancing around each other rush through the tall man. Moments he found Lucifer to be beautiful, or charming, or even feisty flashing before him as a dawning realization hits him like a ton of bricks. He finds the other man attractive. Likely has for a while now. And for some reason the posh little man seems to reciprocate.

Dark hands run up Lucifer’s ribs, ruffling his fine red vest up as they travel up to his chin to cup the other and keep him there.

Alastor’s tongue runs along the smaller man’s bottom lip, requesting entrance. Lucifer gasps in delight, clearly unsure how the taller man was going to take his advance, and tangles his delicate hands in dark hair to pull him further down.

The two lose themselves on the porch, familiarizing themselves with each other’s taste as their hands roam over new territory.

———————————————

Al looks down at his human from his perch on the willow tree. While his beloved human’s son is a good hunter, he finds no need to bring him rats or other meat as he does a fine job killing other men, he is also very oblivious to the courting act of Luci’s human.

Now the two men have finally come together and claw at each other on the front porch. Luci’s human climbs up his own humans body like a tree to get in his arms. Good for him. His own rather stupid human holds the smaller man up by his thighs as he stumbles them back into the house, slamming the door behind him.

Before he can hop down to go spy on the humans a white fluffy tail runs under his chin. All the red fur on his body stands up as Luci runs his soft body along the other cat’s chest. The heavenly creature purrs as it settles down on the branch with him, white tail circling around the red tomcat.

Al’s own thunderous purr reverberates in answer and he settles back down to cuddle his paramour. He has courted Luci for almost a year before the finest cat in the neighborhood finally accepted his advances. Luci begins licking the monstrous cat’s forehead, grooming its lover into a docile stupor. For the first time in its life Al’s normally murderous thoughts turn to jelly and he melts onto the branch, content to let this angel do whatever it wants to him.
