Work Text:
Veritas likes to get up early.
It’s been a habit for years, day in and day out and so far he hasn’t missed a single one, though the man by his side today is making it quite difficult to keep that up.
Aventurine is on his back, limbs splayed out in all directions and head turned towards him, his face relaxed and eyes closed, obviously sleeping and if Veritas shuffled just a bit closer, he’d be able to touch the blonde effortlessly.
His feelings for the other were a recent development, something that had happened quietly and slowly and then hit him so suddenly, that Veritas almost felt overwhelmed by the sheer intensity of them.
He had not been able to tell Aventurine about it outright, lest he ended up increasing his already inflated ego and instead settled for small gestures of affection, until Aventurine went for the first move and kissed him.
And now here they are, sharing a bed with each other whenever possible and luckily on their day off too, a very rare occasion indeed.
The sun had not risen, only a speck of light on the horizon so far, yet Veritas feels wide awake, his inner clock working as intended but his gaze unable to tear itself away from Aventurine’s peaceful display, a rare opportunity to observe the blonde in a relaxed state and without any masking or deceit coming from his side.
Veritas loves both versions of course but this one is special because only he is allowed to see it and experience such vulnerability and he won’t ever admit out loud how much and proudly his heart swells at the sight.
Deciding to move in closer, Veritas slightly sits up and balances his weight on one elbow, resting the right side of his face against his palm and uses his left hand to reach out for Aventurine.
Long fingers cup and trace along a sharp jawline, thoroughly mapping it out, as if Veritas isn’t already familiar with it and eventually those same digits slide up into silky smooth hair and rough it up further, adding to the cute and existing bed head.
He’s seen Aventurine prepare his usually neatly styled choice of hair countless times, had scolded him for taking too long in the bathroom and even now he looked beyond perfect and almost ready for a model shoot.
His fingers move back down, over still closed eyelids with absurdly thick and lengthy eyelashes, that protect beautiful eyes, in which Veritas has gotten occasionally lost during conversations, another thing he won’t admit.
Nose, cheekbones and lips follow all after one another and come to a rest on the latter, tracing over the general outline of them and nearly drawing back in surprise as they part slightly and for a brief moment Veritas thinks Aventurine has woken up before he mumbles something intelligible and turns away.
Relief floods Veritas’ system and he supposes he should finally get out of bed, when that same finger on the blonde’s mouth gets sucked into it and makes his eyes widen, being caught off guard, though that affliction doesn’t last long.
“So you were awake after all,” Veritas dryly comments, earning himself a quiet snicker. “You could’ve said something instead of playing the sleeping beauty.”
Aventurine laughs, louder this time and releases the wetted digit, opening up one eye to look at him and seeming quite tired, despite the circumstances.
“And where would be the fun in that?” he quips back and yawns, stretching out his back and limbs alike and whether intentional or not, kicks against Veritas’ upper thigh, only barely missing contact with his crotch. “Besides, I didn’t want to interrupt..whatever it was that you’re doing.”
There is awkward silence in the room before Veritas decides to disengage from the conversation and turn away to swing his legs over the edge of the bed, though he doesn’t come that far in the first place, a hand snugly wrapping itself around his wrist and keeping him in place with an unexpected amount of strength.
“Can’t you stay?” Aventurine begs and gives him his best puppy eyes. “It’s our day off, so where do you need to be? Don’t tell me you’re cheating!” he adds last minute, feigning hurt and shock and Veritas rolls his eyes.
“Don’t be daft,” he answers, gently prying the fingers digging into his skin off, much to the other’s disappointment. “Some of us can’t afford to slack off and forgo our regular daily structure. That includes me.”
Aventurine sighs in disappointment and lets him go, collecting the couple pillows wildly strewn around him and cuddling back up with them and underneath the large blanket, that belongs to him only.
Too many nights had been spent fighting over a shared one.
“I’ll go shower and make breakfast,” Veritas offers as consolation. “Anything you want. But do try to go for a healthy option.”
“Waffles,” Aventurine says without hesitation. “Extra chocolate sauce and you may add strawberries on top. There’s your vitamins.”
It’s Veritas’ turn to sigh as well, as he reaches for the neatly folded white robe placed next to the bed and slips into it, yet there is the hint of a smile gracing his normally so stoic face, skilfully hidden from the blonde’s view.
Albeit a little silly, he wouldn’t trade their casual back-and-forths for anything.
He can’t help but to look back before fully leaving the room, the first few rays of sunlight now breaking through the window and hitting parts of Aventurine’s face, illuminating it in soft, golden light and the sight is truly divine.
Veritas’ feet carry him over to the other side of the mattress, completely on their own and then he’s leaning downwards, pressing a kiss to his partner’s forehead and being further pulled in for one on the mouth, until Aventurine waves him off and mumbles about how he’s starving and can’t wait for breakfast in bed.
Perhaps he could be swayed to actually stay in later on and return to their place of rest.
Their own and peaceful slice of heaven.
